HOW TO ADRESS THINNING HAIR

1
SCALP
Healthy hair can only grow from a clean and healthy scalp.
Based on scientific observation and stylist and consumer insight, NIOXIN has identified 3 signs of thinning linked to biological factors.

2
ROOT
Hair grows in cycles. With every growth cycle, fewer hair strands may emerge.

3
STRAND
Hair structure changes over time; the aging process leads to finer hair strands.
SCALP CONDITION & HAIR GROWTH
DID YOU KNOW?
> A healthy scalp sets the groundwork for growing thick, healthy-looking hair.

HEALTHY HAIR
> The same way soil condition affects plants, the health of your scalp impacts the integrity of your hair.

UNHEALTHY HAIR
The newborn hair spends 2 weeks in contact with the surrounding skin in the follicle before it is exposed finally to the environment on the scalp surface. In this way, your scalp condition leaves a footprint/birthmark on your hair.
Studies on scalp disorders have demonstrated the link between an unbalanced scalp and hair growth.
THE SCALP IS THE EXTENSION OF THE SKIN
Our skin plays an important role in nonverbal communication, transmitting our emotions (via blushing or paling) and serving as an indication of our health and age. It plays an extremely important role in providing information from the environment to the brain –through touch, temperature, and pain mediation via free nerve endings in the skin.
The skin protects the body against dehydration and external damage (e.g., through microorganisms, chemicals, and UV rays).
Together with the circulation system, the skin helps to maintain a constant body temperature of around 37°C.
The skin is an important energy reservoir for metabolism, holding approx. 50% of our total fat reserves.
In addition, it stores and utilizes numerous other vital substances, such as water and salts.

The surface area of a person’s skin covers on average 2 m . It has a total weight of between 3.5 and 10 kg.

SCALP & SKIN FACTS
THE EPIDERMIS IS INITIALLY DIVIDED INTO TWO LAYERS
THE OUTERMOST HORNY LAYER (STRATUM CORNEUM):
This layer consists of the corneal layer, which directly follows the germinal layer. This comprises approx. 20 cell layers, and it flakes off due to the daily demands on the skin. This process is called desquamation.
THE INNER, ACTIVE LAYER (STRATUM GERMINATIVUM):
The germinal layer is divided into the basal cell layer, which lies directly above the dermis, and the prickle cell layer (Spinosum), where the cells gradually flatten out.

CORNEOCYTES
(skin cells)
The structure of the stratum corneum follows the “bricks and mortar” dermatological model. Skin cells form the bricks of the wall, and the lipids form the cement or mortar.
LIPID-RICH MATRIX
The stratum corneum is the critical moisture barrier of our bodies, aiding the skin in maintaining the correct moisture levels crucial for its healthy function and appearance.
DID YOU KNOW?
Skin acts in many ways as a direct barrier between us and the environment, thereby carrying out numerous vital functions.

Water loss is increased
On a sensitive, dry scalp, the moisture barrier is disrupted. People with a sensitive scalp should pay greater attention to scalp health and use hair care products with mild formulas.
DID YOU KNOW?
Healthy skin continually renews itself. Within approx. 30 days, the newly formed skin cells develop into horny layer cells, and they’re pushed to the surface of the skin, invisible to the human eye.
SENSITIVE/DRY SCALPS: AN OVERALL DEFINITION
THE SCALP IS AN ATYPICAL AREA OF THE SKIN
Since it is normally covered with more and “thicker” hair than the rest of the body, the scalp, like facial skin and skin from other parts of the body, may also be affected by sensitivity.
Sensitive scalps could be described as less hydrated scalps, which consequently result in a dry and itchy scalp. In these cases, the best option for daily hair care is products clinically tested and proven to be gentle to the scalp.

DID YOU KNOW?
Low humidity, especially during winter months, results in reduced moisture content in the horny layer. This leads to increased dehydration of the scalp, causing sensitive reactions, tension, and itching.
CAUSES OF DANDRUFF

A combination of effective active ingredients, including Derma Balance Technology, helps combat the causes of dandruff.
SEBUM PRODUCTION AND AN INDIVIDUAL’S PREDISPOSITION TO INFLAMMATION ARE GENETIC AND CANNOT VOLUNTARILY BE CHANGED
The high level of sebum feeds a fungus called Malassezia globosa, responsible for the scalp’s reaction to produce more cells, visible as bigger flakes. A topical treatment reducing the population of Malassezia globosa is the best option to fight dandruff.
IDENTIFYING SCALP CONDITIONS
Although a sensitive scalp and dandruff may occur together, a dandruff-like manifestation caused by (very) sensitive skin is to be differentiated from actual dandruff, as a product containing Derma Balance Technology would not help.
CLEAR SYMPTOMS ARE:
> Itchiness
> Extremely dry
> Sensitive scalp with fine flakes
> Flaking is only temporary

IDENTIFYING SCALP CONDITIONS
PSORIASIS

PSORIASIS IS CONSIDERED AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE
An inflammatory condition characterized by clearly limited areas of the skin with relatively large, silver-white, clinging flakes. It does not respond to anti-dandruff treatments.
DID YOU KNOW?
This type of appearance needs the advice of a dermatologist, as it often appears on other parts of the body as well. The causes of psoriasis are mostly genetic, but external factors such as stress, smoking, or nutritional deficiencies can aggravate the symptoms.
