Dear DMS Members, There was a time when intelligent automation was the digitization of process variables to allow a DCS to make adjustments to the process according to the set-point. The previous generation of control systems relied only on feed-back to allow the controller to react to the actual process state. Digitization allowed advanced process and predictive control using more powerful processers and hence intelligent automation. In this world, automation vendors concerned themselves with proprietary protocols, reliability, redundancy and specialisation.

Separation and segregation was required to provide specific expertise, disparate systems, reliability and security. Today, intelligent automation means so much more in terms of computing power and electronics’ reliability. Digitalization (not digitization as before) of our automation allows the end-user to, not only predict changes in the process due to external forces that will need adjustment according to the set-point, but also equipment condition to predict upsets that are caused by equipment assets starting to fail like a valve sticking or sensor variance due to internal faults. In this world we will perhaps not need redundancy anymore because this was only required due to the unpredictability of equipment failure.

True intelligence will allow condition monitoring to deploy large centralised processors to predict actual time of failure (day, hour and minute) for switch-over to hot-spares (N + 1) which would be loaded with the appropriate configuration moments before failure. This is the nirvana of intelligent automation and something that all manufacturers are working towards in some way. However, it will require a leap-of-faith by the end-users who will need to be convinced that this intelligence will indeed predict an asset’s end-of-life as accurately as promised without unduly affecting the process. It will also require far more use of larger processors that, in order to use big data analytics, will have to be located in the Cloud to allow the algorithms (that will have to remain on the owner’s server due to their value) to collate data from across the globe from many end-users using the same equipment because better prediction comes from greater amounts of data.

This will require common system networks and communication protocols, which is obviously a huge challenge, but also will require end-users to share their data with the global community. Cyber-security is obviously a major concern therefore and why so much time is spent these days talking about it but the sharing of asset data and process conditions with vendors is perhaps the biggest challenge. No enduser likes to allow others to access their data for fear of losing their competitive advantage or allowing wrong-doers to create havoc. Most end-users will believe that this data is highly sensitive no matter what it shows. The writer has a different opinion because most of this data is just that, data that is meaningless by itself and requires context. Besides it can be stripped of its source whilst still providing useful feedback to allow real benefits to be derived from such. So, once we have brokendown these barriers, intelligent automation of the future will know the process and assets better than the owners do just as Google, Amazon or Facebook know our purchasing, online social behaviour and reading, listening or watching habits better than we do and we give this data away mostly without fear of reprisal and free!

Arkema - Symphony Project - Rilsan Polyamide 11 Resin Plant Arkema is a world-renowned producer of specialized chemicals and materials. Its 3 business segments-Industrial Specialties,Coating Solution and High Performance Materials are globally recognized brands.

In its quest to further expand production, Arkema announces its plans to increase its polyamide 12 polymers in China by 25% which in turn will complement its upcoming bio-based polyamide 11 projects in Asia.

The new bio-based polyamide plant will manufacture Arkema’s flagship Rilsan polyamide 11 resins and amino 11 monomer. Rilsan polyamide 11 is a purely bio-sourced polyamide extrapolated from castor oil. It is approved for most demanding utilization such as 3D printing, electronics, oil & gas extractions, automotive markets as well as a plausible substitute to metal.

Alongside Arkema’s schemes to improve its assets across the board, an agreement between Arkema and WEG is inked for the supply of high-efficiency low voltage electric motors. The agreement will initially cover Arkema’s North American facilities then gradually trickle its way down to the Singapore bio-based plant.

Currently undergoing engineering design, the Rilsan Polyamide 11 Resin Plant is one of Arkema’s projects that deems a remarkable investment (valued at over $500 million) for the period of 2018-2021. Construction completion of the bio-plant is expected around the fourth quarter of 2021.

The project location, however, had been narrowed down to Malaysia, China and Singapore, the latter being the chosen location for the project due to Jurong Is-

Exxonmobil - Chemical and Refining Integrated Singapore Plant (CRISP) Project Exxonmobil’s Chemical and Refining Integrated Singapore Plant (CRISP) Project is a key contributor towards Singapore’s development. The upcoming world-scale refining complex is to utilize high-end technologies that will, in turn, deliver high-quality light and heavy lubricant base stocks through the conversion of lower value byproducts. The expansion would enable ExxonMobil to introduce a new quality-grade base stock to the market.

Early in 2017, Exxonmobil successfully acquired Jurong Island assets of Jurong Aromatics Corporation (JAC), outbidding 5 other high profile competitors such as Lotte Chemical Corp and SK. Exxonmobil would then hire two world-renowned engineering firms, JGC and Tecnicas Reunidas, to assist with the CRISP project. JGC’s scope of work involves Piping and Instrumentation (P&ID), basic engineering, Front End Engineering Design (FEED), and Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) proposal assessment while Tecnicas Reunidas’s focus will be on FEED development.

The Final Investment Decision (FID) on the expansion project was slated for the first half of 2019, after which assessment of EPC tenders could take place. Tecnicas Reunidas, Wood Plc and Chiyoda would be the front-runners of EPC race.

In May 2019, Tecnicas Reunidas was chosen as the EPC contractor to spearhead the project following its success as the FEED contractor on the CRISP project. Wood PLC was awarded a contract to spearhead the development of interconnecting pipelines and supporting infrastructure facilities.

Currently under the early stages of construction and engineering design, Exxonmobil’s Chemical and Refining Integrated Singapore Plant (CRISP) Project is one of its major investments to date in base stock production in Singapore.

Introduction Today’s manufacturing operations and maintenance teams generate vast amounts of data in all forms. As a result, finding the right information, at the right time, and making it accessible to the right people are critical to keeping these functions operating at optimum levels.

Companies trying to understand how to make better use of their data are turning to various types of analytics for answers. These include how to best manage the data, how to determine what data is truly valuable, and when and how to align technology and people to assist with making meaningful conclusions.

With digital transformation initiatives increasing the amount of data created and shared within today’s industrial organizations, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to make meaningful use of all the data, particularly for maintenance and operations staffs on the shop floor.

Finding Nuggets in a Mountain of Data With digital transformation initiatives increasing the amount of data created and shared within today’s industrial organizations, making use of all this data can be a challenge. It’s not that this data isn’t relevant, but often some of the more meaningful and actionable nuggets are hidden within a mountain of disparate data, both structured and unstructured.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to make meaningful use of all the data being generated. This is particularly true for end users on the shop floor looking to expand their predictive maintenance and predictive analytics capabilities.

Data that was often managed separately in silos simply

can’t be managed that way today. The implication is that maintenance and operations will need to have a much more cohesive vision around shared data and analysis. This is why many industrial organizations seek analytics solutions that can be used by operations and maintenance personnel alike.

Accessing Data at the Edge As industrial organizations adopt smart manufacturing methodologies, there is a growing need to acquire, access, and share equipment and sensor data, and then transform all this data into actionable information when and where it is needed.

This data is typically generated near or at the edge layer (close to the point of origin), and processed, stored, and accessed at the database and Big Data layers. Moving forward, data will need to be managed closer to the origin point and then made accessible throughout the organization.

The Emerging Democratization of Analytics With all of this data being streamed and stored in a wide variety of loca-tions and systems, making practical use of it can be a challenge, since mining such disparate data can be difficult. Until recently, most software programs available required specialized expertise and investments in traditional and often costly analytics solutions. These solutions also have all the attendant services costs such as implementation and maintenance.

In addition, the skill sets needed to use these solutions have traditionally been left to trained data scientists and statisticians assigned to organizations’ quantitative staffs.

Consequently, many industrial organizations have been reluctant to fund analytics projects at the operations and maintenance levels.

More recently, however, new analytics solutions have been introduced to the market that are designed for other users within the business, such as operations and maintenance staffs. These users typically have limited quantitative skills and these newer solutions can provide value for a broader range of users within an industrial enterprise. As industry undergoes a digital transformation, non-data-science users now have more powerful and accurate tools at their disposal. They can now run various operations-specific predictive models and scenarios, and in near-real time if necessary, a capability not generally available until recently.

New analytics solutions have been introduced to the market that are designed for operations and maintenance users with limited quantitative skills and can thus provide value for a broader range of users within an industrial enterprise.

The time is right for maintenance and operations staffs to make better use of analytic tools to improve industrial asset availability and performance. A change is under way with software, as new, intuitive, and powerful products are being introduced by established and emerging business intelligence, analytics, and data visualization providers.

In addition to being relatively easy to use (compared to traditional solu-tions), some of these new solutions enable users to construct models intuitively via visual representations of the data. These solutions are both powerful and intuitive and can allow business users the ability to create queries and some models without the need to write and sequence SQL (structured query language) queries. Other solutions require text-based commands using SQL. What makes these new solutions accessible to a broader set of users? With these solutions, the rules and sequences for data evaluation are often set by manipulating visual elements (much like setting joins and formulas in some report writer programs), with the underlying SQL code available for those experts who want, or need, to review in greater detail. The result has been a new class of data visualization analytics products that are powerful, yet intuitive and easy to use.

While sometimes derided by analytics experts as being too much like “black box” solutions (because the underlying code when constructing and evaluating data models is largely hidden), they can nonetheless guide users with pre-configured code for common analyses. While these easier-to-use solutions do not necessarily replace the highly trained and experienced quant personnel, they allow operations and maintenance users to conduct “what-if” modeling and analyses and make better use of analytics experts’ time to validate the underlying methodologies and models.

Many of these solutions also offer open APIs and other options to allow connectivity options to a wide range of data sources. In many cases, SaaS solutions are available, which can offer rapid time to implementation and a lower total cost of ownership compared to on-premise variants that require the purchase of perpetual licenses and associated hardware.

Project Background The Singapore Refinery is a world-scale refining complex across two sites - one on the mainland (Jurong) and another on Jurong Island (Pulau Ayer Chawan or PAC). Together with the Singapore Chemical Plant, they form the largest integrated ExxonMobil manufacturing complex in the world.

ExxonMobil is planning on expanding clean fuel and lubricant output of its Singapore Chemical Plant.

With base oil being the raw material used in machinery motor parts, the expansion would enable ExxonMobil to introduce a new high-viscosity base stock to the market. The project is the latest in a series of recent ExxonMobil investments in base stock production in Singapore.

When a Dream Needs a Gentle Push to Give It Wings-Sponsored by Analytical Division Of ISA Growing up as the youngest child in a family of five, abandoned by your father, neglected by your elder brother and sister, with just your mother who is a day laborer in a physically unwell state of health and with the dreams of one day becoming a Chemistry Professor is really hard. This is exactly the condition of Mohammed Sajib Sheik, a 10 year old boy hailing from a slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Sajib’s father abandoned the family a long time ago.

His elder brother and sister are both married and living their own happy lives while almost totally neglecting the existence of their own mother and brother. Sajib’s mother, Sofia Begum works as a day laborer to provide for herself and Sajib. But, because of being physically unwell, she isn’t able to go to work daily and so the responsibility of taking care of his mother and himself falls on the meek shoulders of young Sajib. He has to works after school, selling newspapers and water bottles to meet their needs.

Like all other kids of his age, Sajib too loves playing cricket. He sings as well. But unlike every other kid whose role model might be a cricketer in this cricket crazy nation, Sajib’s role model is Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the world famous Swedish Chemist and founder of the Nobel Prizes, and hence his love for Chemistry.

Once, at school, during a session of Science, the teacher was teaching about mixtures and it was a little above the understanding capabilities of a regular Sixth Grader, but Sajib easily understood the concepts and was given the opportunity to perform experiment in front of the whole class, and that too very successfully.

He is passionate about his dreams to become a Chemistry professor one day and that is clearly reflected in his academics. But the only thing in his way to achieve that dream is the current situation he is in. No one to help him progress with his education, no one to guide him and help him plot his next steps

in education. And this is where C2C has come in to help him. C2C has taken Sajib under its wings and are supporting him by providing 1000BDT per month to help take care of their accommodation needs so that he can use the money he earns by himself to help complete his education and pursue his dreams of becoming a Chemistry Professor.

C2C has a really good idea of how Sajib should carry on his education so as to achieve his dream. The Bangladeshi educational system is basically divided into 7 levels: •Pre-primary: Play School to Kindergarten •Primary: Grade 1 to Grade 5 •Junior School: Grade 6 to Grade 8 •Secondary School: Grade 9 to Grade 10 •Higher Secondary: Grade 11 and Grade 12 •Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years •Master’s Degree: 1 year According to the above given system, Sajib is now in Junior School and has a minimum of 9 years of education left to finally be able to achieve his dream.

As per the Government curriculum, basic Science will be taught to all students from Grade 6 to Grade 8. From Grade 9, Science will be broken down into Physics, Chemistry and Biology. And it is also from Grade 9 that the education stream will be divided into Science, Arts and Commerce and this will be followed up until Grade 12. So, Sajib will have to opt for the Science stream from Grade 9 and then continue his education to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and then opt for a Master’s Degree in Chemistry to increase his chances of becoming a Chemistry Professor.

Sajib is currently being sponsored by the Analysis Division of ISA. With a helping and guiding hand behind him, Sajib can easily achieve his dream and build a brighter future for himself and his family.
