ADIPEC Conference achieves new record With final submissions for the 2012 ADIPEC Conference now closed, this year’s call for papers attracted more than 1,500 abstracts
Members of the ADIPEC Executive committee chaired by Ali Rashid Al-Jarwan, CEO, ADMA-OPCO Growing in reputation over the 15 years of the exhibition, ADIPEC’s conference platform has earned it’s accolade as the region’s most comprehensive technical programme, spanning a full range of industry sub-sectors. With a huge response from potential conference contributors, the total number of abstract this year is already higher than ever before, with 1,534 abstracts received for 2012, compared to 1,097 in 2010. The number of sessions is also the highest yet, extending to 50 sessions this year, up 30 per cent on 2010, with a broad array of international speakers. As Ali Rashid Al-Jarwan, CEO at ADMA-OPCO and Chairman of this year’s ADIPEC Conference Executive committee explains: “In 2012, more than any previous year we have noticed that papers submitted for evaluation were
of an exceptionally high quality, and were also received in greater volume. The extremely high standards of our selection process are reflected in the number of speakers and the technical quality of the final programme.”

Attendee insights Oil and gas professionals speak to dmg energy about the broad appeal of ADIPEC and the Conference Programme
For visitors and exhibitors based within the UAE and other parts of the Gulf region, ADIPEC has historically been a platform for networking, exchanging ideas and doing business. The diverse nature of the Conference Programme and its specialised range of topics provides an invaluable medium to learn about the latest emerging developments from some of the industry’s leading authorities. This year’s conference programme has further extended the scope of topics relevant to the regional and global energy industry. Here, past delegates share their own insights and experiences. “As a delegate, I’ve found the networking opportunities at ADIPEC extremely useful. I do a lot of work in Abu Dhabi, and meeting the right people and gaining a deeper

understanding of customer needs is invaluable. I will definitely attend again.“ Klaus Mueller, technology manager MENA, Shell Upstream International, Shell Development Oman LLC “The size of the exhibition with as many technologies as one can imagine stunned me. In spite of its scale, the arrangements to cater to delegates’ needs, including transportation arrangements, was superb. I also met up with some old friends I had not seen for years.” K. Kumar, head of reservoir engineering, Bahrain Petroleum Company “As a multinational company there was great benefit for us in meeting all the big names within the industry. The Conference Sessions provided

a huge source of information on the latest and emerging technologies. Networking was another major objective.“ Tarek El Gammal, senior business development, Wireline and Perforating - Halliburton Energy Services, Saudi Arabia “The level of participation and variety of technical discussions was extremely useful. By gathering a group of highlytechnical people in one event, ADIPEC is a great forum for exchanging ideas. We were also able to network with people who we would not be able to meet normally. “ Hafez H. Hafez, reservoir manager – studies, ADCO “We found ADIPEC very successful in meeting our business development objectives. It was very

well-organised and the presentations covered some very topical technical issues. We saw new tools with high technology and new approaches that will reduce uncertainty in our reservoirs. I recommend the event to all friends and colleagues in the oil and gas business. It is an excellent opportunity to meet people from different countries and share knowledge.“ Rashad Masoud, senior petrophysicist, ADCO “The quality of presentations and speeches was excellent. This is a very large oil and gas event, bigger than I remember, and gathers people from every company working in the sector. It has enabled me to meet people and receive updates information on what is going on in the industry.“ Leo Figarella, consultant planning group, Kuwait Oil Company

Sustainable Energy Growth: People, Responsibility, and Innovation
A historical snapshot of Abu Dhabi’s oil Held this year for the first time, and with input from some the most prominent oil and gas companies in the region, the ADIPEC Museum promises to be a major feature at ADIPEC 2012. Located in the outdoor grandstand area, the ADIPEC Museum will cover a 500 sq m area in the centre of the offshore tent, close to the VIP area and Middle East Petroleum Club. It will provide a unique insight into the history of oil exploration and production in the UAE over its 40-year development. The discovery of oil has been a major driver of Abu Dhabi’s prosperous economic growth over the years, helping to confirm its role as a global success story for the UAE and wider Middle East. As Hanadi Aliwat, museum project manager, dmg events explains, the initial idea was to create new features within the large outdoor area that will form part of the exhibition this year as the event grows in size. “Last year we had a memorabilia stand which showed old technologies such as gas pumps used over the years,” she says. “Yet with the huge energy industry in Abu
Dhabi, there isn’t a single oil and gas museum in the city. After discussing the concept with key companies from the industry, they were very interested in the whole idea.” Organisations that lent their full support in research gathering included the UAE Ministry of Energy along with ADNOC and its subsidiaries ADCO and ADMA-OPCO. The ADIPEC Museum will provide a chronological display of machinery, instrumentation and photography, all accompanied by explanatory information in Arabic and English. Exhibits will include historic photographs, old documents, past memorabilia such as equipment and technologies and a core display. The museum’s videography section will show video interviews with key professionals involved in the early days of oil exploration, sharing their stories of Abu Dhabi’s pre-oil days and the development of the industry to the present day.
The ADIPEC Museum will provide a chronological display of machinery and instrumentation
Visitors will be taken on a timeline journey from January 1939 – a time when the UAE’s (or then Trucial States’) mainstay economy, the pearling trade, was in decline. It was then that Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan al Nahyan signed a 75 year concession agreement with Petroleum Development (Trucial Coast) Ltd (PDTC) to explore oil in Abu Dhabi. The timeline will extend to capture some of the most notable milestones such as major exploration achievements, the establishment of Abu Dhabi’s major oil companies and the crucial involvement of the major multinational oil
companies – or Seven Sisters as they became known – during the 1950s and 1960s. “We would like to thank the museum sponsors Exxon Mobile and the Partex Oil and Gas Group, plus those that contributed photographs and memorabilia – the UAE Ministry of Energy, BP and ADCO,” says Aliwat. “The museum is also a tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for his wisdom and long-term vision for Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE.” ADIPEC itself is targeting more than 45,000 visitors. It is hoped that most will spend some time at the museum over the duration of the event.

Tapping opportunities in the Gulf In another first for ADIPEC 2012, the GCC Country Briefings will provide a unique insight for oil and gas companies considering establishing operations in the Gulf region.
Interactive sessions will be informative and practical
The briefings will serve as an invaluable guide to the Middle East – including the culture, politics and business environment The series of briefings to be held during the first two days of the exhibition will comprise of panels with representation from each of the six GCC countries. They will provide a business overview for international companies in managing their risk when deciding whether to enter into or expand within the region.
Each panel will consist of regional oil company members and consultants providing their own insights into the business climate, from a range of perspectives including legal, technical and government. “The briefings will serve as an invaluable guide to the Middle East – including the
culture, politics and business environment,” says Tea Vutmej, special projects manager, dmg energy. “They will also offer a crucial support framework to international companies in managing their risk within the regional context.” The invitation-only sessions will be very audience-driven in the questions they put to the panel. As Vutmej explains, the idea was to initiate interactive sessions that would be interesting, informative and practical. They will comprise of topics such as building successful partnerships and support networks in the region, some of the challenges associated with finding the right business partner, investment/ economic updates, demand trends and industry forecasts. In focusing on delegates’ main areas of interest, dmg energy conducted a survey to confirmed exhibitors. Information gathered included insights into which Gulf countries they may be considering for business expansion, whether delegates have existing agencies or distribution networks in the region and how they may be planning to expand. Many international companies showed a keen interest in gaining insights into the types of technologies required to ensure success in the Middle East and GCC, and how these could be used to support bid applications. “The response we’ve received has been extremely

forthcoming and positive,” says Vutmej. “It has given us a very clear indication of the main areas that the participants are interested in. The briefings promise to be a real exchange of insights and ideas and will be a very valuable aspect at ADIPEC this year.” Evening Reception To end the day, an evening networking reception, supported by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, will be held at the spectacular Emirates Palace. Starting at 7:30, all international exhibitors and visitors who attended the GCC Country Briefing sessions, will be invited for an evening of UAE cultural experience including food and entertainment. For sponsors of the evening, a space will be allocated for them to promote their brands and provide a further opportunity to discuss business opportunities to a captured audience. Kimon Alexandrou, Commercial Director for dmg energy, comments “With the support of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, we are delighted to host an evening to showcase the local traditions of the UAE and allow International attendees a firsthand experience of the local cuisine and culture.” For more information please visit www.adipec.com/ gccbriefings or contact Tea Vutmej on TeaVutmej@ dmgeventsme.com

ADIPEC Exhibition powers ahead Salman Abou Hamzah, exhibition manager at dmg events, tells ADIPEC News what exhibitors and visitors can expect from this year’s exhibition
ADIPEC now fills all 12 halls and over 37,000 sq m... show space will have grown by more than 22 per cent since 2010 and exhibitor numbers will increase by more than 8 per cent
How does this ADIPEC 2012 compare so far with 2010 in terms of floor space and exhibitors? The event has expanded significantly in recent years, thanks to the new state-ofthe-art ADNEC venue. ADIPEC now fills all 12 halls and over 37,000 sq m. In November 2012, ADIPEC is expanding its reach to include a new unique outdoor exhibition area which will include a 4000 sq m marquee and a newly-created 2,000 sq m heavy equipment area. We anticipate show space will have grown by more than 22 per cent since 2010 and exhibitor numbers will increase by more than 8 per cent over the same period to reach 1600.
Who are some of this year’s most interesting exhibitors and why? The event will feature the biggest attendance of
national and international oil companies of any event in the region, with some of the best known names in the industry participating. These include the host sponsor ADNOC and strategic sponsor ARDECO. Platinum sponsors include ExxonMobil, JOGMEC, OilSERV and Total. Our gold sponsors are KPC, JODCO, OMV, Oxy, Statoil and Dolphin Energy along with silver sponsor Wintershall.
Which countries have the biggest representation at this year’s event? ADIPEC is supported by 13 national country pavilions, with the biggest representation from the US followed by Germany, Italy, China, UK, the Netherlands, Korea, Norway, France and a number of other countries.
What are some of the emerging key oil and gas
markets outside of the Middle East and that are reflected in this year’s event? The number of international and regional exhibitors at ADIPEC is increasing on a yearly basis. A number of companies are collaborating with local distributors to market their products and services and more companies are joining from India, Russia, Commonwealth of Independent States from the former Soviet Union (CIS), Korea, US and other regions. With 50 per cent of the world’s oil reserves sitting here in the Middle East, this region is extremely important, and many of these exhibitors are opening offices in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq and Bahrain.
What are some of the new aspects visitors can see at this year’s exhibition?
www.adipec.com
Other than the new outdoor exhibition area, a number of exciting additions are in store this year. These include the ADIPEC Museum – the first public museum archiving the achievements of the UAE oil and gas industry from the 1930s through to the modern day and providing an interactive journey from the discovery and extraction to production of oil in UAE. This year’s exhibition also brings the region to Abu Dhabi through the introduction of the GCC Country Briefings programme, featuring key industry figures and companies who operate in the region. These will serve as a key platform to assist international businesses in entering Gulf markets, while promoting awareness of local regulations, trends and best practices. The GCC Country Briefings have already attracted the support of Abu Dhabi’s ADNOC, Oman’s PDO, and the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC).
