Committee. The ADIPEC conference is chaired by Mr. Ali Rashid Al Jarwan, CEO of Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO). Highlighting the important role ADNOC plays on the world energy stage, Al Jarwan said: “This is an excellent chance for ADNOC professionals to exchange their expertise and learn from each other, also taking advantage of the networking opportunities ADIPEC presents.” He said this year’s show will feature a strong focus on gas, covering both natural gas and unconventionals. New techniques being studied and applied across the industry will also be explained. Technology innovation is an area that has a specific focus within the conference programme.

Tapping into gas ADNOC is expanding its natural gas reserves. The UAE’s 6.1 trillion cubic metres of gas accounts for nearly 3 per cent of global reserves, but the power sector is increasingly gas-hungry. Though Abu Dhabi exports 8 million tonnes per year of liquefied natural gas, it is also forced to import gas from Qatar via the Dolphin pipeline. Against this backdrop, the authorities are prioritising once-neglected sour gas reserves, headed by the US$10 billion Shah sour gas development, one of four major sour gas projects on ADNOC’s books. Abu Dhabi’s gas sector. This may force a greater compromise on commercial terms. “If you compare the situation to a few years ago, it’s a completely different environment now,” said Justin Dargin, a Gulf energy analyst at the University of Oxford’s School of Environment and Geography. “A few years ago it looked like Abu Dhabi not going to budge on pricing and create the kind of economic framework to induce the production of sour gas, but across the region there has been movement on pricing. “The IOCs have expressed interest in sour gas, but these are commercial enterprises that need to make a return

In May 2012, oil companies were invited to submit bids for the Bab and Hail sour gas developments, with the former expected to produce up to 800 million cf/d; the latter, 1 billion cf/d. In June, Germany’s Wintershall and Austria’s OMV signed an agreement to study development of the Shuweihat sour gas field. The technical and fiscal challenges in tapping and delivering highly corrosive sour gas volumes to market all play to IOC skill sets, ensuring a continued role for foreign players in

These projects will likely serve as a staging ground for indigenous companies, yet they also know this is not going to happen tomorrow, so they will bring in joint venture partners and have technology transfer,” said Dargin. Abu Dhabi is also backing the US$11 billion Integrated Gas Development project, due for completion in early 2014. This will see 1 billion cf/d of gas from the offshore Umm al-Shaif field enter the domestic grid.

Abu Dhabi powerhouse charts growth CEO details plans for continued energy dominance NEWS A01 Atrium, Stand A020 11-14 November

Ali Rashid Al Jarwan, chairman of ADIPEC and CEO of Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMAOPCO), explains why the Middle East is such a pivotal player in the world’s energy market. Interview by James Gavin. Ali Rashid Al Jarwan has been instrumental in the development and growth of ADIPEC, and is tasked with overseeing the biggest oil and gas industry event in the Middle East. That would be responsibility enough, but Al Jarwan heads up ADMA-OPCO, the Abu Dhabi state energy company’s offshore oil and gas production arm, is in the midst of an ambitious development programme. “We have a heavy programme to pursue both in terms of mega-projects, developing facilities and drilling programmes and development drilling. It’s a positive environment for the government,

shareholders, operating companies and contractors alike right now.” ADMA-OPCO, whose shareholders include ADNOC, BP, Total and Japan Oil Development Corporation, (JODCO), operates two major fields - Umm Shaif and Lower Zakum, one of the world’s largest offshore oilfields. The two fields

oil output in Q3 2012 averaged 2.6 million bpd, according to OPEC’s October oil market report. As new field development programmes begin to take shape, Al Jarwan’s focus is on steering Abu Dhabi’s offshore hydrocarbons sector on the path to sustainable growth. “ADMA-OPCO is pursuing a one million bpd production target and the

majority of this will be completed by the end of 2017, raising it from the current level of 600,000 bpd. Around 100,000 bpd of this will come from Lower Zakum, while the new volumes will come from three main fields: Umm Lulu, Satah Al-Razboot

(Sarb) and the Nasr field, which will contribute 270,000 bpd. The remaining 30,000 bpd will come from existing fields, mainly Umm Shaif,” he said. This work involves substantial capital investment outlays. “New grassroots field development requires investment, and this will be between US$10 to $15 billion in total by 2019 – if we implement all projects we are considering.” He added that the overall price climate remains supportive for Abu Dhabi’s expansion plans – and those of the wider region. “It seems that demand for oil will remain high and both supply and demand will continue to be tight for companies looking forward to developing traditional production,” he said. Oil prices continue to trade in the $80$120/b band, which provides assurance over the immediate outlook for investment. “This is basically positive in the

A milestone year 2012 marks ADMAOPCO’s 50th anniversary in its current form. In 1977, the new company, Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMAOPCO), was established as a national corporate short-term, but in pursuing sustainability of production and supply, we take a long-term view in Abu Dhabi about increasing ultimate recovery. Within this journey of sustainability, this second factor is supporting higher production,” Al Jarwan said. To build production over the long-term

All of these are concerns and it is a challenge to manage them correctly.”

Knowledge transfer, education and EOR crucial The ADIPEC conference chairman, Ali Al Jarwan, has not only helped steer the ADIPEC vision since its inception, but he is also the man behind ADMA-OPCO, ADNOC’s offshore production arm. In launching the event, he said: “We face similar challenges to those faced by everyone; but the

need for human resources sits above all others. Education, knowledge transfer and training are vital if we are to continue striving for excellence in managing our assets. The recovery rate is a journey, and it’s a long journey. The intention is to improve the recovery factor in Abu Dhabi to

Talking unconventional Halliburton eyes future technology requirements across the region NEWS Hall 7, Stand 7040 11-14 November

Halliburton will use ADIPEC 2012 to demonstrate its unconventional well construction and completion technologies. Acutely aware of the

new technology needed in the Middle East, Mike Hugentobler, VP for Middle East and Eurasia, said: “Halliburton is focused on both maintaining our Middle East conventional

business and positioning ourselves for the unconventional and HP/ HT business of the future. These challenges require cutting-edge technology and sophisticated solutions – the innovations

Halliburton brings to the table year after year.” Gas is a major focus in the coming years, according to Hugentobler. “The three areas of focus for Halliburton are the development

of unconventional gas reservoirs, deep HP/ HT well types and the remediation of mature fields. “There are the rapidly growing unconventional and deepwater markets that need the advanced technology we have been developing in North America and other regions; there is also a need to extend the life of a large number of conventional fields. “All three sectors need Halliburton’s technology,” he said. Halliburton has already seen success in exploring and developing gas reservoirs across the Middle East – for example, in Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the UAE. In Saudi Arabia, Halliburton has a ninemember unconventional technology team to help customers assess and rank several reservoirs, perform completion and fracturing treatments to establish the presence of gas, determine

Mike Hugentobler where to place laterals, and advise on what technologies will unlock the reservoirs’ potential, the VP explained. Halliburton’s unconventional and reservoirproductivity technology center in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, is scheduled to open next year, enabling operators and universities to tackle the region’s technical challenges. In the UAE, operators have begun pilot programmes in unconventional gas, both on and offshore. Halliburton is helping with field studies and technology workshops covering all the critical services.

New dawn for Gulf oil and gas giant? Abu Dhabi is plotting expansion of its oil and gas sectors, ushering in changes to the way it partners with international oil companies, reports James Gavin.

Gulf energy analyst, Justin Dargin

Open to partnerships

Abu Dhabi accounts for 94 per cent of the UAE’s total crude oil reserves Over the past two decades, the UAE has become a significant services hub, shedding its oil dependence. Tourism, transport, trade and logistics are all significant drivers of economic growth. Yet the four per cent real GDP growth rates seen last year are mainly due to Abu Dhabi’s robust oil sector. Abu Dhabi accounts for 94 per cent of the UAE’s total crude oil reserves, estimated at 97.8 billion barrels. A combination of strong oil prices and efforts to increase production to make up for supply disruption from Libya – and now Iran - saw UAE revenues increase by more than 50 per cent - to US$112 billion in the first half of 2012. Abu Dhabi’s Supreme Petroleum Council, the country’s highest oil authority, has instructed

12

operating companies to seek ways of raising production. “The UAE has raised output from 2.7 million to 2.8 million bpd and is targeting capacity of three million bpd by end-2012. There are plans to invest US$60 billion in the next five years to raise production capacity

(ADCO), which accounts for 1.4 million bpd of production, is 40 per cent owned by Shell, Total, ExxonMobil, BP and Partex. Its concessions expire in two years’ time. The Abu Dhabi authorities have already received pre-qualification bids from ten invited companies.

Four per cent real GDP growth rates seen last year are mainly due to Abu Dhabi’s robust oil sector

to 3.5 million b/d by 2017,” said Gokkent. ADNOC undertakes field developments in partnership with major international oil companies under long-term concessions. Some existing licences are due for renewal in 2014. ADNOC affiliate Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations

ADIPEC NEWS 2012

Industry speculation suggests the large ADCO concessions could be broken into smaller units, widening upstream participation beyond the current single consortium structure. Change is also afoot offshore Abu Dhabi, where the licence held by Abu

Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO), another ADNOC division, with partners BP, Total and Japan’s JODCO, will expire in 2018. Until then, the partners are committed to helping ADMAOPCO raise production capacity from 600,000 bpd to one million. The last of the Abu Dhabi concessions, another offshore area held by ADNOC’s Zakum Development Company (ZADCO) covering the Upper Zakum, Umm AlDalkah and Satah offshore fields, expires in 2016. International shareholders are ExxonMobil and Jodco. There is likely to be tough bargaining over both concessions, with ADNOC looking to tap its partners’ technological expertise, and the foreign companies seeking improved terms on the current fixed $1 a barrel fee.

Abu Dhabi is eyeing the benefits of its longterm relationships with IOCs. While Saudi Arabia’s energy sector is dominated by Saudi Aramco, the UAE has traditionally been more open to IOC partnerships. “If you look at the Gulf states, they have various strategies for partnering with IOCs, but it’s clear over the long-term they would like to produce more hydrocarbons themselves,” says

Justin Dargin, a Gulf energy analyst at the University of Oxford’s School of Environment and Geography. “In the UAE there’s been a staged process, which has been mutually beneficial to both sides.” In another shift in Abu Dhabi’s approach to foreign participation, it is broadening its outreach beyond the traditional line-up of western players, soliciting interest from emerging Asian oil companies.

NBAD says good State oil company ADNOC’s capacity to ramp up crude production has proved a boon both to the global market and to the Emirates’ economy. UAE oil output was up five percent in 1H 2012 compared with a year earlier, according to National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD). Higher export volumes and

strong prices have led the bank to raise its forecast for 2012 GDP growth to 3.3 per cent from an earlier 2.6 per cent. “The UAE is well placed to boost output thanks to investment in new capacity, and with Iranian production declining, the demand situation is strong,” said Giyas Gokkent, chief economist at NBAD.

Diversity without adversity AlMansoori’s charismatic CEO explains the lure of ADIPEC NEWS Hall 2, Stands 2080 & 2070 11-14 November

Al Mansoori is one of the most well established oilfield services provider in the region, founded in Abu Dhabi in 1977. The company has a workforce of around 1400 employees

across 21 countries, and is renowned for zero LTAs and award for HSE across its global operations. CEO Nabil AlAlawi has been part of the company for the past 35 years.

Here, he explains how Al Mansoori has been gearing up for ADIPEC. ADIPEC provides huge value for Al Mansoori, a regular exhibitor at ADIPEC. “As the company has expanded its operations

across the Middle East, North/East Africa and Asia, the exhibition provides an invaluable platform for making high-value contacts; predominantly drilling and production companies. ADIPEC

is the perfect forum to network, unhindered by the distractions of day-to-day operations,” AlAlawi said. “We start preparing for the show four or five months in advance. The way we present our wide range of services presents a challenge and is carefully planned. We have to work out how we can you cover all our services in one space and differentiate them.”

testing. Production testing, Al Alawi believes, is certainly an on-going issue in the industry, with the days of ‘easy oil’ long gone. Anything that helps automate the complexity of testing at the well head will surely be a crowd puller. Al Mansoori has always managed to stay slightly ahead of the curve with our products and services, and production

Business is flying for Bayards NEWS Hall 11 Stand 11055B 11-14 November

WHEN ADMA OPCO realised it needed to replace many of its old wooden helidecks, it turned to Dutch aluminium construction experts, Bayards. Bayards, appearing at ADIPEC for the first time, opened a sales office in Abu Dhabi 18 months ago, to better serve its clients, bringing 30 years of aluminium offshore construction expertise to the region. Bob Splinter, Bayards’ UAE Sales Manager, said: “We have been working hard to promote the benefits of aluminium constructions (as opposed to steel and timber) and with great success. Last month ADMA OPCO awarded us the order of the design, engineering and manufacturing of 179 aluminium helidecks.” To fulfil the order, Bayards has started a close co-operation with Abu Dhabi-based manufacturing

yard, Adyard. Design and engineering will be completed at Bayard’s Netherlands headquarters, with manufacturing done locally in Abu Dhabi. Bayards’ will update ADMA OPCO’s rigs with aluminium Safedecks; self-extinguishing decks with enhanced passive fire suppressing performance. The first helideck will be delivered in April 2013, and from then on, Bayards and Adyard will deliver a helideck every week for the next four years. Splinter said Bayards hopes this is the start of a very successful cooperation in the UAE. During ADIPEC, Bayards will host a seminar and lunch about the benefits of aluminium offshore constructions. The event, hosted by CEO, Dies Mackintosh, takes place tomorrow (Tuesday, November 13), in Capital Suite 15 from 12.30.

Green solution Thermtech treats waste with haste

The new compact mobile treatment unit NEWS 9000 H, Norwegian Pavilion 11-14 November

Norway’s Thermtech owns the patented ‘TCC’ process used to treat oily waste produced during drilling, production and refinery activities. TCC converts kinetic energy to thermal energy by creating friction in the waste. Rocco V. Valentinetti, marketing and sales

director, Thermtech, said: “The most important property of the TCC process is its ability to recover every component of the waste, with the same qualities of the original components. The objective of our presence at ADIPEC is to create awareness among operators about our technology.

We hope oil companies will eventually specify and require TCC for their waste treatment projects.” At the end of the treatment, the oil can be re-used and the clean solids can be used in different applications, land filled or discharged to sea. With all the elements recovered to be re-used with their chemical and physical characteristics unchanged, TCC eliminates the concept of waste. A compact, mobile TCC unit is among Thermtech’s recent developments. Instead of transporting waste to the treatment unit, the mobile unit is transported to the waste.

Apollo gives production a lift NEWS Hall 8, 8070A 11-14 November

Delivering a world of Turbine Solutions

Camcon Oil, a provider of innovative solutions to the oil and gas industry, is showcasing its digital gas lift solution Apollo at ADIPEC, as it prepares for the product’s first deployment in Oman, as well as continuing to strengthen its Middle East presence. Apollo, part of Camcon’s Digital Intelligent Artificial Lift (DIAL) solutions portfolio, will shortly complete field trials with a leading oil and gas operator in Oman. The solution provides operators with accurate gas injection control and flexibility from a single asset. This is achieved through a series of digitally-operated valves which enable the real-time setting of injection rates. “The result is that operators can look forward to increased recovery from existing oil fields,” said Ian Anderson, regional GM.

According to the company, recent tests have found that Apollo can deliver as much as 1,000 bpd more oil production from a typical well and, in one scenario, a 110 per cent increase in production compared to traditional gas lift equipment. Camcon also views the Middle East region as a key target for Apollo, and has developed a strong

Middle Eastern presence. Camcon recently announced that Nabil AlAlawi, the CEO and co-founder of Al Mansoori Group, one of the Middle East’s leading oilfield services companies, is to join the Camcon board as a non-executive director. Camcon already has a distribution partnership in

place with Al Mansoori to sell Apollo throughout the region with the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Bahrain and Yemen all covered by the agreement. The agreement has also been extended to cover Special Oilfield Services Co LLC (SOS) of Oman, in which AlMansoori holds a major share.

ADIPEC NEWS 2012

CHALMIT supplies premium quality fluorescent, HID & LED lighting products for use in hazardous area, industrial and marine environments. Chalmit is using ADIPEC as the launch platform for a new product – its first ever LED floodlight SOLAS for Zone 1. The long life of the LEDs makes it possible to use the luminaire continuously

in normal operation (maintained), while still ensuring illumination in power failures. Alternatively it can simply be used as an emergency luminaire – ie, in a nonmaintained environment. “Traditional products like fluorescents, floodlights, bulkheads and wellglasses using traditional lamp sources such as fluorescent or HID will not disappear overnight, but we are

continuing improvements in LED technology. This new light source is fast becoming the bright hope in reducing energy whilst still fulfilling the need to safely light oil and gas installations worldwide,” said the spokesman. Other brands within the group at the stand include: Hawke International, (cable glands) Killark, (explosion proof fittings) and Burndy (electrical connectors).

OPEC

Remain vigilant El-Badri asks for reduced investment speculation

OPEC Secretary General, Abdalla Salem El-Badri OPEC’s new World Oil Outlook 2012 report has just been released. ADIPEC Show Daily offers a précis of the cartel’s opinion, delivered by OPEC Secretary General, Abdalla Salem El-Badri. “Ongoing geopolitical tensions, continuing excessive speculation in oil markets, a fragile financial and banking system, an anaemic economic recovery despite the extraordinary fiscal and monetary support, persistent high unemployment and social unrest in a number of countries have all made 2012 a challenging year for oil producers and consumers everywhere. The biggest hurdle facing the global oil market in 2012 remained the uncertainty surrounding the global economy. Risks stemming from the Euro-zone have heightened as a result of expanding public deficits, weakening economic growth, deleveraging in the banking system, as well

upside potential also exists and could have a sizable impact on oil prices and investment needs. “This past year has also seen prolonged instability and tensions in a number of countries. These events, in turn, have impacted the oil market. “Volatility and excessive speculation were also present in 2012. Crude prices showed an upward trend during the first quarter of 2012, followed by a drop during the second quarter, before recovering in the third. These price fluctuations were a reflection of divergent factors, including global economic prospects, supply disruptions, refinery outages and “Looking ahead, it other downstream is..important to remain vigilant. The US appears more resilient, but its economic indicators throughout the year have been mixed. And in developing countries, economic growth is slowing, feeding concerns as to whether the difficulties in industrialized nations will spill over into their economies.

Looking ahead, it is.. important to remain vigilant

Fiber Optics for Monitoring EGS New cable technology helps well management

AFL’s fiberoptics NEWS Hall 3, Stand 3025 11-14 November

AFL, a leading supplier of downhole fiber optic cable used in the oil and gas industry, is using ADIPEC to reveal a suite of optical sensors for monitoring pressure and temperature in enhanced geothermal systems, (EGS), that is also applicable to oil and gas wells. Developed by researchers from AFL, General Electric Co., QOREX and Sandia National Labs, the second year of this US-government sponsored project has seen a fiber optic cable and key sensing subsystems designed, fabricated and tested in the laboratory for temperature and pressure

business development manager, specialty cables, AFL, said: “Its practical uses for the Middle East are for sensing of parameters in oil and gas wells. Although our study was based on geothermal wells, the parameters of interest are the same in oil and gas wells. With this technology, oil companies can know temperature, pressure and acoustic signatures in their well which will allow them to ensure the oil or gas well is operating as intended. This allows the operator to maximize output of the reservoir which, in economic terms, is quite significant.

The offshore marquee: More than 68 exhibitors are within this 4,250 square meters of floor space. NEWS Outdoor area 11-14 November

For the first time ADIPEC features an exciting OUTDOOR area, packed with some of the world’s leading energy companies keen to reveal bulky equipment. Despite 73,000 square metres of world class exhibition space at ADNEC, the 4,000 square metre

outdoor area opens up additional opportunities for the industry’s leading marine, offshore and outdoor players to showcase mobile units and marine access, for instance. “The oil and gas industry relies on some of the largest heavy equipment to support its complex, labour intensive processes, whether in construction, development

or on-going maintenance of facilities. We have responded to a number of requests from some of the biggest players in the region and on the international stage who wish to display their equipment in a great new outdoor space,” said Kimon Alexandrou, commercial director, dmg energy, the show’s organisers. “Offshore and outdoor

spaces are key elements in the oil and gas industry. We are offering a unique, strategic platform for the industry’s marine services and heavy equipment manufacturers, who are typically limited to the confines of indoor areas in industry exhibitions,” he added. You can expect to see heavy machinery, including

generators, cranes and heavy lift units, as well as high access units, drilling platforms and pipe wranglers, to name a few. Adjacent to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), the new space features a purpose-built quayside by the creek complemented by a substantial outdoor exhibition area. The ADIPEC Marine, Offshore and Outdoor halls provide water access, moorings and quayside exhibition space. Rig owners, offshore contractors, marine services providers and even subsea specialists have taken advantage of this space. You’ll find the entrance to the outdoor area between halls four and five. The area is split into two segments – outdoor

equipment; the offshore hall (including the new ADIPEC Museum – see page 42). Nagesh Tallapragada, ADIPEC sales executive, said more than 100 companies are exhibiting in the new area. The offshore hall is housed under a purposebuilt 170 metre-long marquee - one of the largest ever built in the region, where more than 68 companies are exhibiting. In the middle of the outdoor zone is another ADIPEC first – the purpose built Middle East Petroleum Club, an exclusive venue where the global industry movers and shakers can rub shoulders, network and conduct business in a welcoming, sophisticated environment, away from the hubbub of the show floor.

Raising living standards Modular accommodation manufacturer, Spacemaker, displays units at the show NEWS Offshore & Marine Area, Stand G570 11-14 November

Spacemaker provides onsite accommodation units for the oil, gas and other industries. A key element to its business model is to provide clients with what they need, when they need it and how they need it. This is the first year Spacemaker is exhibiting at ADIPEC and the company is making the most out of the event, showcasing actual accommodation and workshop units from the outside and in, fully furnished and featuring aspects such as kitchen and laundry facilities. Many of the firm’s products are also trailer-mounted, hence

comparatively easy to shift. Spacemaker is a sister concern of plant hire firm, Byrne Equipment Rental; a plant hire supplier operating in the GCC for more than 20 years, and now the largest such company in the Middle East with 450 employees across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Ali Mills, the company’s MD, said while Spacemaker’s core business is the supply of accommodation units, complete with all ‘mod cons’ such as kitchens, laundry facilities and leisure areas, its strengths lie in its synergies within the Byrne Group and its partnership network. “We are unique in what we offer the market,” said Mills. “In addition to our camp manufacturing capabilities, clients have other essential requirements such as plant, generators, lights, tool baskets, cabling and other auxiliaries integral for a camp. These are all

things Byrne Equipment rental can provide. “Through our close partnerships we can also provide sewage treatment and reverse osmosis plants, skid-mounted and containerised. We have the ability to provide total applications for oil and gas companies. Another great advantage is our network of offices across the GCC.”

“When you walk into one of our units it’s like a five-star interior; very high-quality, durable and comfortable. Our clients’ priorities are drilling for oil. Our focus is to give them everything they need in one shot. For people working long hours, seven days a week, it is important that it should feel like home,” said Mills.

Mogens Thyssen, Country Manager for Ferguson Middle East, said: “There has been a great deal of interest in the group’s products and services in the Middle East and exhibiting at such a well-attended event as ADIPEC provides a perfect opportunity

for us to meet with existing and potential clients and discuss their requirements. This region is very important to the group as it continues to expand its international product offering.” The group, headquartered in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, has operations in all major oil and gas locations, and more than 170 staff globally.

Supplying oilfield products and services to the worldwide oil and gas industry since 1841, National Oilwell Varco (NOV) is occupying space in both indoor and outdoor areas at ADIPEC 2012. “Our indoor stand has various pieces of NOV equipment on display, including a seeker directional drill bit, pipe samples, the Orion V DAS with ROVer, and more,” said Mark Tooley,

China – a dominating energy The crouching tiger climbs in global position as an energy consumer NEWS Hall 10 11-14 November

China, the world’s second hungriest consumer of oil and energy after the US, is fast on its way to being number one. In 2011, China’s demand climbed 6.1 per cent higher than 2010, breaching nine million bpd for the first time ever. Despite its manufacturing sector contracting every month this year, the strong presence of Chinese energy companies at ADIPEC shows there is still strong confidence in the oil and gas sector. While energy demand has dipped this year, Chinese companies are clearly keen to establish strong working relationships with companies here in the Middle East and the wider region. BP CEO Bob Dudley speaking at an event in Tsinghua, China, said: “Our 2030 outlook suggests China’s energy demand will increase by 80 per cent over the next 20 years. MUSEUM

A history lesson out with a difference This year’s ADIPEC sees the first museum archiving the achievements of the UAE oil and gas industry from 1928 through to 1979, providing an interactive journey from discovery, via extraction to production of oil in Abu Dhabi. The ADIPEC Museum – located in the new outdoor area accessed from the Atrium between Halls 4 and 5 – features a fascinating array of historical documents

dating back to the earliest days of the UAE oil industry, including contracts signed between the Trucial States’ (now UAE) government and the first oil majors to work in the region. Donated by the Haji Williamson family, these historical items include letters, documents and photographs. A meeting of the curators of the ADIPEC Museum was held in mid-September, to make some tough final

decisions on what should be included, selected from among hundreds of worthy items submitted for consideration. The museum area will feature examples of early equipment restored specifically for the event. Adding to the static exhibits will be a series of short films, some made decades ago alongside more recent movie footage. The contemporary films will include interviews

with current industry figures, who share their recollections of their early days in the industry – certain to inspire the younger generation of oil and gas employees. The museum has been made possible due to the support of its sponsors, including BP, ExxonMobil, Partex Oil & Gas, Shell and Total, all of which played important roles in the history of the Gulf region’s oil and gas industry.
