Innovation key to efficiency

Alan Duncan pictured at the Petroleum Club Investment and diversification are essential to improve energy efficiency and accelerate decarbonisation, a leading British politician said at ADIPEC yesterday. Alan Duncan, Minister for International Development and head of the UK delegation to ADIPEC, said Britain believed such innovation

can have “huge benefits”, including nations such as the UAE where oil and gas are prolific. “We welcomed the opportunity to press home this message when we hosted the third Clean Energy Ministerial in April this year,” said Duncan. “And there are already excellent examples of UK and UAE partnerships in the energy sector – our

work together on Masdar, the investment in the London Array offshore wind project and via IRENA are examples of our close co-operation.” Addressing a gathering of VIPs at the Middle East Petroleum Club at ADIPEC, Duncan said such cooperation had helped the industry develop. “Our message to the world is that the UK has many years experience in how to produce oil and gas in technically challenging environments. UK companies are at the forefront of innovative, technical advances in the industry such as enhanced oil recovery and sub-sea developments. “The world will continue to rely on hydrocarbons for the foreseeable future – but how that role evolves will define the fortunes of the region. Now is the time to be asking – and answering – these questions.” Duncan said it was necessary to invest in

natural resources and new sources of technology to promote cleaner, more efficient sources of energy. This allows a more diverse and sustainable approach to power future economies. It was vital that both energy producers and consumers worked together to ensure their energy priorities are met through a transparent global market and stable energy prices, according to Duncan. He urged looking to the future by intensifying efforts to bring new energy partners into the future energy framework. “Iraq, for example, has vast gas reserves and the greatest potential for increasing conventional oil production of any oil-producing country. “To this end, the UK supports projects such as the Southern Corridor pipeline that will transport gas from the Caspian region into Europe, potentially boosting Iraq’s ability to become a major gas producer and exporter in the longer term.”

Jotun Paints, one of the world’s leading producers and distributors of paints and powder coatings, has been showcasing its latest range of conventional and specialised coating solutions at ADIPEC. Jotun has highlighted key specialties like corrosion protection and passive fire protection of steel as well as protection and decoration of concrete. Jotun currently offers a diverse portfolio

of products combined with technical guidance and expert coating advice during application in key business areas. They include energy, hydrocarbon processing, oil and gas, infrastructure and storage tanks. “ADIPEC has become a strategic platform to discuss the latest issues and challenges of the region’s oil & gas segment,” said Sherif Megeed, Regional Protective Director - MENA, Jotun.

Suwaidi: Gas future ...continued from front page industrial growth; if you look at ADNOC’s own usage of gas as fuel gas and in re-injection; the gap over the next ten years could grow to between half a billion and two billion scf per day. “Let’s not forget that ADNOC exports gas to Dubai and as LNG to Japan. If you consider all this, the region will certainly see a gas shortage. But the gas directorate is taking bold steps to address the shortage before it becomes a problem. GASCO’s Integrated Gas Development (IGD) project is aimed at adding new onshore and offshore gas processing facilities at Habshan and Ruwais in Abu Dhabi. The IGD project will process gas from the Umm Shaif field at Habshan and Ruwais. The project is expected to be completed by 2013, and deliver natural gas by September 2013. Al Hosn Gas is behind a scheme to introduce gas from the Shah sour gas field by the end of 2014, in a joint venture with Oxy valued at US$10billion, while Elixir, ADNOC gas directorate’s JV with industrial gases company Linde started producing nitrogen in June 2011;

since then 300m scf have been sent to Habshan, and mixed with methane for injection into the condensate reservoir – freeing up the same amount of gas to the network. “With all of these projects, we aim to bridge the gap between supply and demand,” said the director of the gas directorate. ADNOC is exploring the possibility of enhancing gas production from current gas reservoirs and gas cap oil fields. It is planning to launch development of technically difficult and challenging undeveloped gas reservoirs onshore and offshores in Abu Dhabi to narrow the gas shortage. As the incoming conference chairman for next year’s ADIPEC, which will have a strong gas focus, Al Suwaidi sees his role as ensuring the sharing of information, enabling those who attend ADIPEC 2013 to gain insight into ADNOC’s technology leadership, its environmental stewardship, and its benchmark best practices. “The future is gas,” he concluded.

COUNTRY FOCUS

Rebuilding opportunity Iraq experts give their viewpoints on the road ahead

Show visitors flocked to hear oil and gas professionals working in the burgeoning and booming Iraq market describe the challenges and opportunities in what many describe as the region’s most exciting market. The fascinating event was one of four special ADIPEC Middle East country briefings sessions organised yesterday, others focused on the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait. The briefings were designed to look at the opportunities and risks from legal, technical and business perspectives. Panel members at the Iraq session comprised Ruba Husari, energy expert and managing director of the Baghdadbased advisory Iraq Insight, Peter Day, CEO, Petronor Group, developer of residential project Iraq Energy City (see box), Omar Moussa, VP Iraq, Schlumberger

4

and Nicholas Atencio, GM Kurdistan, DNO, an oil and gas company with 17 licenses across the Middle East. In terms of oil and gas potential, Atencio stated that Kurdistan was proving to be a “world-class hydrocarbon base.” As reported by the Kurdistan Regional Government,

since the 1981 Iran-Iraq War and subsequent Gulf Wars, said Schlumberger’s Moussa. That said, he predicts significant growth, doubling 1979’s peak production of 3.5 million bpd in the coming years. At the same time, the country has been deprived of the technology to fully exploit the opportunities. It

Opportunities in (Kurdistan) are there for anyone willing to make the effort he stated, upstream production would reach one million bpd by 3013 and two million by 2019. More than 30 different companies from 17 countries already operate there. “Opportunities in the region are there for anyone willing to make the effort,” he said. Iraq’s oil production had significantly dropped

ADIPEC NEWS 2012

will be essential to address this in future, he said. Despite the country’s rich reserves, only one third of foreign direct investment is energyrelated, primarily focused on Basra and Baghdad, said Petronor’s Day. And while there is growing stability and opportunities (violent incidents dropped from more than 10,000

in 2006 to under 2000 in 2012), there are still some major challenges to doing business. Outside of the main cities, cell phone coverage can be negligible, while the internet, a major business commodity, remains expensive. There are still some major interruptions in utilities infrastructure, along with a lack of toplevel medical services. Nevertheless, the government is providing investment incentives, not least to oil and gas operators. The Private Investment and Refining Law from the 2005 Constitution states allows companies to build, own and operate refineries on 20-year land leases, said Husari. Free zones are also in their early stages of development under the Ministry of Finance. The federal budget of 2013 has also allocated US$14 billion to the upstream sector.

Iraq Energy City – a new living model Iraq Energy City (IEC), just outside the country’s main oil port, Basra, built by Petronor, is an oilfield supply base created with the support of the Iraq Ministry of Oil to build and operate oilfield supply bases in Iraq. In February 2009, Petronor signed a contract with South Oil Company for the first base, a 300,000 square meters site. The base includes include offices, workshops and storage yards for long-term rent or lease. A compound with housing includes recreational facilities, utilities and communications. The objective is to create a safe, clean

and efficient working environment for the oil industry in Iraq. The base will cater to local oil industry needs and is open for both oil companies and oilfield service providers and their subcontractors. Peter Day, CEO of project developer, Petronor Group, explained the city offers high levels of company accommodation. Today it accommodates 400 people, with 1500 envisaged for 2013. “Phase one is complete with the basic amenities to live, work and play,” he said. “Phase two involves building a US$1 million sports centre, and phase three community services, schools and retail areas.”

sector of the oil and gas industry, working with national oil companies, international oil companies, independent operators and service providers. We aim to be the number one service company in well intervention,” he said.

Interwell is known for quick turnaround time, often offering bespoke products made to clients’ exacting requirements. “The North Sea was an excellent proving ground for our products, with all kinds of extreme conditions and temperatures,” he said. Interwell was created in 2011; the result of a merger of two pioneering companies – PI Intervention, a service company startup working in the North Sea Intervention market, and BTU, a Trondheim Norway engineering firm that designed many of the products that are now the main focus of Interwell’s well integrity solutions. The company has doubled its head count since the merger, and has also attracted a very experienced workforce. “The company is well represented by employees who have worked for all major

service companies, and who understand the needs of our customers worldwide,” said Sinclair. “Our employees feel that a key to our success is the lack of bureaucracy, which most large service companies have to continually deal with. Marketing or engineering solutions from Interwell happen very quickly, and each employee feels very much a part of the solution.” Comparing the pioneering spirit of Interwell to his days at Baker Hughes in the 70s, Sinclair is enthusiastic about the company’s prospects. “The Dubai regional office is well positioned for entry into other new markets within the Middle East, including Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait and others. The Interwell slogan is ‘Serving Every Well’ – and it’s our goal to make our well integrity solutions something that can solve problems in any well.”

Kuwait employs hi-tech to ensure stable future economy NEWS Hall 9, Stand 9020 11-14 November

Hosnia Hashim is deputy managing director (North Kuwait) at Kuwait Oil Company. She talks to the ADIPEC Show Daily about her role as an executive on the conference organising committee, and her company’s leading role in Kuwait’s growing economy. What do you think of this year’s papers? This edition of ADIPEC brings an outstanding, unprecedented number of papers. I was impressed to see the high number of submissions related to environment and safety, HSSE; many more than in previous editions. This surely reflects the interest and focus of the oil and gas industry in gaining more safety for its workers and operations. The SPE has worked extensively on these matters, to raise awareness, and recent industry efforts aim towards standardising HSSE procedures worldwide. The Middle East in particular is engaged in environmental, safety and health care. I am glad to see ADIPEC’s presentations will reflect this. You have a lot of hitech, groundbreaking

Hosnia Hachim work going on right now in partnership with a number of leading multinational players. Is this to ensure Kuwait’s future economic strength, or do you want to be seen as a global technology leader? There are a number of reasons for KOC to focus on high-tech solutions, but what really brings all these reasons together is our people. We want to ensure Kuwait benefits from a strong, modern, highly technological oil and gas industry, to sustain and enhance our role as a prime

exporter to global markets. We want to contribute to Kuwait’s legacy of wellbeing and even greater life quality standards for future generations. For this to happen, we need to adequately manage the life of our reservoirs, which cannot be achieved without new technologies. A global technology leader? Perhaps that would be a consequence of KOC’s vision and strategy. In this sense, being perceived as a global technology leader would be the result of a much higher goal: a flourishing, better Kuwait for our people. KOC’s Chairman, Mr. Sami F. Al-Rushaid, spoke during the first plenary session at ADIPEC – for those who might have missed it, what did he say? Mr. Sami shared the immense growth we are planning for Kuwait Oil

Company operations, to match the targets set by KPC, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, our holding company. With a glimpse on our most important challenges, he showed we are focused on developing all our resources, conventional and non-conventional. What is your aim at ADIPEC? I am looking forward to gaining an updated view on the current important projects in the Middle East. We are in a vibrant region of the world, and ADIPEC is a hub where one can find all this and more, expanding the technical and managerial network in a swift way. KOC has an important participation with technical papers, in the exhibition, and is also one of the panels of the Country Briefings. I am absolutely proud and thrilled to be here.

A node-based and stakeless seismic survey is being conducted in Iraq based on a BGP-developed digital seismic system. The project is being conducted by BP. The operation spans 1800 sq km in South Iraq. “Currently we use cable, but on this project we used node,” said BGP spokesman Shang Yongsheng, international deputy director of International Institute for Geophysics, who has been explaining the new system on the BGP stand in hall 10 at ADIPEC. The system includes

an operation command package, quality control and processing package for high production acquisition. “It implements wireless job assignment and monitoring plus forbidden area alerts for 18 vibrations in an area 40 km away from base camp,” said Shang. “The system can reduce manpower, enhances productivity and we can ensure data quality. It also protects the environment because it is stake-less and marker-free.” “It can do everything in camp – there’s no need to go outside.”

ExxonMobil launches new turbine oil Specifically formulated to help provide trouble-free service NEWS Atrium, Stand A08 11-14 November

ExxonMobil Lubricants and Petroleum Specialties, a division of Exxon Mobil Corporation, has announced the introduction of Mobil DTE 932 GT, a scientifically engineered gas turbine oil that can help oil and gas operators to increase productivity by reducing unscheduled downtime and supporting their safety and environmental care objectives. Engineered to enhance the performance of frame size combustion gas turbines with a common hydraulic and bearing oil reservoir, Mobil DTE 932 GT is specifically formulated to help provide trouble-free

service in gas turbines, which is crucial given the oil and gas industry’s reliance on turbine reliability. Gas turbines for example, play a fundamental role in LNG production, with many LNG plants using gas turbines to drive compressors used to cool and liquefy gas for transportation. As such, keeping gas turbines running effectively is key to maximising plant productivity and reducing expensive, unscheduled downtime. “One challenge to maintaining effective gas turbine performance is controlling the formation of varnish, a catch all term for deposits found in gas turbine operations either in the form of sludge or varnish,”

said Yan Côté, Global Business Development Advisor, ExxonMobil Fuels, Lubricants and Specialties Marketing Company. “Varnish can have a significant detrimental impact on gas turbine operation, but Mobil DTE 932 GT offers the potential for greatly reduced varnish formation. Other performance benefits of Mobil DTE 932 GT include exceptional high temperature performance, outstanding deposit control, excellent foam control and air release”. For more information about this high-performance gas turbine oil or any other Mobil-branded products and services, visit mobilindustrial.com.

The emirate re-injects a large amount of natural gas back into wells to re-pressurise them and increase oil recovery, but many operators are now considering replacing

oil, gas and petrochemicals in Abu Dhabi. “Using carbon dioxide in this way will play a part in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.” The company will celebrate its 50th anniversary in the UAE next year. Shell’s future is in gas as production eclipses oil

Matthias Bichsel NEWS Atrium, Stand A06 11-14 November

This year, for the first time in its history, Shell is producing more gas than oil, Matthias Bichsel, director of projects and technology, tells ADIPEC SHOW DAILY: “A substantial amount of the energy Shell has

helped deliver comes out of wells in the form of natural gas. In fact, our ventures found the Groningen gas field (Europe’s largest) and Qatar’s North Gas field (the world’s largest). Over the years, we’ve become much more deliberate about searching for and developing gas fields. We explore for gas accumulations that have been overlooked in wellknown geological basins, such as those of the North Sea. But we also look for gas in less explored places, from the northern latitudes of the Arctic to the southern latitudes of Australia. “We’ve recently also been looking at much trickier gas resources, such as shale, coal and other

We have invited our agents in the area as well as customers to come to the show and discuss business opportunities. Our stand is a so-called ‘clean stand’ with digital presentations of our products since they are too diverse to show them all.” The company is showcasing products including magnetic, reflex and transparent level gauges, orifice assemblies, and Pitottube, Cone, Venturi and Wedge flowmeters.

“At ADIPEC we are showing unique solutions for gas analysis, including sample handling,” said Jeannot M. Kok, CEO of Hobré Instruments. “In many refineries and petrochemical plants, furnaces, turbines and boilers can be exposed to frequent and sudden changes in the fuel gas composition.” Hobré Instruments is displaying its Hobré Wobbe index and TDL analysers, and patented filter, with ‘proven’ benefits to gas producers, improved response time, no loss of heavy hydrocarbons, no liquid carry-over problem, less downtime and reduced maintenance.

Blast and fireresistant door and wall specialist, Interdam, is showcasing a number of products, most notably its G21 FirePanel. “For decades, architectural fireresistant doors and walls have relied on thick, heavy-welded wall solutions,” said Berend Groeneveld, the firm’s MD. “InterDam has developed a far more flexible, cost-effective solution in its new G21 FirePanel. This uses standard fire-resistant materials, but combines them in a revolutionary new way within a galvanised or stainlesssteel external skin.”

INTERVIEW

Eyeing the future with a nod to the past Industry veteran Bernard Duroc-Danner says focus on remains on existing resources

NEWS Hall 8, Stand 8030 11-14 November

Weatherford’s recent record revenues must indicate the industry behemoth is doing something right. Dr Bernard DurocDanner, CEO, tells ADIPEC SHOW DAILY about his company’s business philosophy. Bernard Duroc-Danner is proud of a lifetime spent in the energy business, and delighted to be attending ADIPEC 2012, where he delivered a keynote speech to delegates on the first day, November 11. The company is clearly doing something right, with second quarter revenues of US$3,778 million breaking the company’s records; and the highest in the company’s history. But Duroc-Danner speaks with typical humility: “I wouldn’t make

20

too much of it. The energy business is, and always has been, a great space to be in. The company has grown enormously in the last decade, and when we grow old we should grow profitable! “No-one at Weatherford thinks this is remarkable, and we don’t expect to stay at this level. We expect margins to increase a lot from where they are today. Things are never the way they should be in our industry, but it’s in good shape. The environment we are in is one where a company should be able to do well. Yes, there are pockets of weakness, but no one should feel markets are not good enough. Energy is a good place to be, and it’s always a good place to be.” Where does Weatherford see the

ADIPEC NEWS 2012

business in ten years? “On one hand, we will have a more challenging environment to operate in,” he says. “Oil and gas is now very deep, in very deep water or in high pressure environments. We need to make more with what we have, manage the process of ageing and increase rates of recovery from old reservoirs.

Weatherford’s CEO, Dr. Bernard Duroc-Danner

the more difficult ‘frontier’ environments – offshore Africa, deep, remote oceans and the Arctic, to name a few – and some of the majors have been vacuuming up the frontier acreage in recent times; this is not for Weatherford. “The frontier exploration is not for us. It’s not a bad play, but we cannot do everything.

The energy business is, and always has been, a great space to be in

“We also need to look harder at unconventionals – but why are we so interested now and weren’t before? When my father was in the oil and gas business, there was no need to be interested; but now there is a need to be interested; it’s more and

more the focal area. “There is a lot of experience coming out of the US oil patch - we will know a lot more in ten years on how to exploit these unconventionals, the frontiers and the difficult shale areas.” While he sees growth in

We are focusing more on existing reservoirs and unconventionals – this is what our people are trained for. We are narrow and modest in our business. We would never have the resources to address the frontier issues with the quality, passion

and relevance needed.” Challenges Duroc-Danner sees the rate of introduction and adoption of technology as a big issue. On top of this is acceptance and utilisation of technology. “Demography is also a very important challenge – our work is very labour intensive,” he says. “Unconventionals such as heavy oil and shale oil means a lot of work. Work on ageing wells can also be labour intensive too, but there’s a skills gap. We are training, but the sheer number of people who have to be replaced is daunting. “We remain an industry based on field work; on being on location – but it seems there is an unwillingness for engineers to ‘get their hands dirty’ these days.”

SURVEY

Oilcareers.com rings industry challenges NEWS Concourse, Stand 012A 11-14 November

The global oil and gas industry faces a plethora of challenges, according to a recent report from OilCareers.com, the international job board for the oil and gas industry, produced in association with Air Energi, a global provider of manpower to the energy sector.

the seven major oil and gas producing regions. Offshore oil and gas projects worth approximately US$87billion are currently planned or underway in the Middle East. The strong performance of the sector is reflected in the region’s workforce, particularly as the region continues

strong performance of “theTheregion’s oil and gas sector is reflected in its workforce. ”

Focusing on employment and salary trends throughout 2012, the report, “The Global Oil & Gas Workforce Survey: Expectations for hires and pay rates in the oil and gas industry H2 2012,” addresses issues affecting the oil and gas industry. More than 170,000 oil and gas professionals were invited to participate from over 50 countries within

to offer some of the most competitive packages across the global energy industry. Figures suggest the Middle East leads the way in terms of operational focus. Staffing practices that match international standards are gaining popularity to ensure the right talent is hired and receives sufficient training. Mark Guest, MD of OilCareers.com, said:

Mark Guest, MD, Oilcareers.com “Local content regulations – where foreign operators are required to prove they have made every effort to recruit from local sources and to use indigenous business channels – are however proving particularly challenging in a number of regions including Africa, the Americas and parts of Australasia. “Internationally,

operators are embarking on a large number of major investments, benefitting greatly from technological advancements. Yet major challenges remain with access to skilled labour a pivotal concern, combined with a global shortage of those with the necessary experience to help companies fully realise the potential of these opportunities.”

product capabilities in areas such as pipeline management, oil and gas extraction, safety and security applications. French company Schneider is no new entrant to the Middle East, having operated in the region for the past 25 years. Most of the company’s oil and gas related business is in the Middle East, primarily the UAE and Saudi Arabia. “Through this aqcuisition, we have doubled our capacity

in energy management software, a strategy we began to pursue in the early 2000s,” said Patrick Albos, Schneider’s VP, oil and gas solutions. “These include applications such as Telvent Smart Grid. We are very committed to furthering energy efficiency in the region. “We are aiming to get a bigger, better location at ADIPEC next year. So far this year we’ve had an extremely encouraging response.”

Established in 1974, UAE-headquartered Lamprell provides diversified engineering and contracting services to the region’s onshore/ offshore oil, gas and renewable energy industries, and has always been an active participant at ADIPEC. This year the firm has two stands. One is part of local service agent, NAMA’s, stand (6030) while a larger stand will represent all its group businesses (11000A). Sustainable Energy Growth: People, Responsibility, and Innovation

IRAQ

Iraq eyes the main chance Baghdad poised to play a major role in meeting global oil demand. James Gavin reports.

In the past few years, Iraq has undergone a renaissance, powered mostly by its energy sector. The country is, in many ways, an explorationist’s dream, combining strong reserves, easy geology and low costs. In the last year alone, Iraq’s production and exports have grown. In September 2012, oil exports – boosted by the restart of the northern pipeline to Turkey - hit 2.6 million barrels a day (bpd), the highest since 1979, when Saddam Hussein took power. Now pumping around 3.4 million bpd, making it the second-largest producer in OPEC and the world’s third-largest exporter, Iraq will play a significant role in meeting globally supply growth over the next two decades. The challenge now is to

38

ensure that the potential its estimated 143 billion barrels of proven oil reserves offers is properly harnessed. How it achieves this depends on a number of variables. If the base-case scenario of the International Energy Agency (IEA) is borne out, Iraq will emerge as the biggest contributor to world supply up to 2035, accounting for around 45 per cent of incremental production with the addition of 5 million bpd. Even conservative estimates suggest Iraq has produced only 15 per cent of its recoverable resources. Of 530 potential hydrocarbonbearing geological prospects identified in Iraq, only 113 have been drilled. According to the IEA, citing Ministry of Oil data, Iraq’s proven reserves are spread across 66 fields,

ADIPEC NEWS 2012

with total oil-in-place at these fields exceeding 500 billion barrels. This implies an average recovery factor of around 35 per cent. Five super-giant fields in the south: Rumaila, West Qurna, Zubair, Majnoon and Nahr Umr, account

exploration, so the numbers will only increase.” “When you look at the last two years, Iraq added almost 800,000 bpd onto the markets. It is already creating a significant role for itself in global oil markets.” This increase is largely

with BP at the Rumaila field, followed by Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, Eni, Lukoil and Gazprom. Under the IEA’s examination of 46 fields, the agency said if all proceed according to schedule, production capacity

For decades there was no exploration, so numbers will only increase

for 60 per cent of the total proven reserves. The other main reserve-holding fields are East Baghdad and Kirkuk in the north. IEA chief economist Fatih Birol noted at the launch of the agency’s report on Iraq’s production potential in October 2012: “Iraq is one of the most unexplored countries in the world. For decades there was no

the result of 19 service contracts awarded to IOC-led consortia. All the consortia include an Iraqi state-owned player with a 25 per cent minimum stake. These cover 70 per cent of Iraq’s oil production. Despite tough terms, and no prospect of equity oil, Iraq’s bid rounds, which started in 2008, managed to attract the big guns, starting

would reach 14.6 million bpd by 2020, almost five times the 3 million bpd pumped in mid-2012. Confident The agency is confident Iraq could reach this, citing binding commitments from foreign partners which will cover more than 12 million bpd of this capacity under service contracts. However, there is as yet

no unanimity about how much new oil Baghdad intends to bring to market. In early October, the chairman of the prime ministerial advisory commission, former oil minster Thamer Ghadhban, indicated a medium production plateau of just over 9 million bpd by 2020 – a figure that would meet domestic demand of 1.5 million bpd and exports of 7.5 million bpd. This is in line with targets given by deputy prime minister for energy, Hussein Shahristani, who believes 9-10 million bpd is sustainable for 20 years from 2020. But the Ministry of Planning’s National Development Plan 2013-17 has set 7 million bpd as the benchmark. Ghadhban’s 9 million bpd target is below that envisaged under the

service contract terms. Luay al-Khatteeb, director of Iraq Energy Institute, says initial plans suggest a historical production plateau, on top of existing production, of close to 12 million bpd by 2017, not including potential production from the Kurdistan region. “We’re talking about a lot of oil, and while according to IEA and OPEC forecasts the world will need the equivalent of two Saudi Arabias by 2035;

40

the question is whether we will need 13 million barrels before 2020,” he said. Although there’s enough oil in the ground to meet long-term global demand even in the lowest case scenario for Iraqi production, Khatteeb says the commercial commitments involving IOCs could cause problems. “The licensing rounds’ contract awards were based on two key parameters – the highest production plateau rate and

ADIPEC NEWS 2012

the lowest remuneration fee. If it alters any of these, the Iraqi government would breach its own transparency parameters and the settings of the bid rounds.” The initial production target for each field provides the trigger for cost reimbursement and fee payment, incentivising operators to reach this level quickly. Reining these back, even by small percentages, could have commercial repercussions

for the IOCs involved. If the government reduces production plateau targets, that would force the renegotiation of remuneration fees, says Khatteeb. “Any reduction of more than 15 per cent is challenging. And which fields are they going they cut down? What are the new terms? All these things will have to be taken into consideration.” Disincentive? With some IOCs

November 11-14, 2012

apparently ready to put their positions in Iraqi developments at risk in order to pursue opportunities in Kurdistan, nagging questions persist as to the long-term suitability of the service contracts. “For IOCs, the low fixed-fee per barrel remuneration model remains a disincentive,” says Jason Lovell, partner at international law firm Eversheds. “For many of these companies, the production sharing contract (PSC) terms on offer in Kurdistan will be more attractive long-term propositions and this will shape their investment decisions in Iraq. “ There are other drawbacks from the effective creation of two oil jurisdictions, says Lovell. “Areas licensed in Kurdistan for exploration constitute, for all practical purposes, a distinct and separately governed region from the licensed areas in southern Iraq.” Another problem is the country’s limited export options. If Iraq is to sell more than 7 million bpd, its transport options must extend beyond the existing Gulf terminals – responsible for almost 90 per cent of current exports – and the northern pipeline from Kirkuk to Ceyhan. The government is looking to augment these

with a third option, ideally giving exporters access to the Mediterranean. Finding new export corridors won’t be easy, says Khateeb, particularly with Syria riven by conflict and unlikely to emerge as a safe transit for Iraq’s oil for some years. “The five single-point moorings in the south can handle 4.5 million bpd, but relying on that Gulf corridor is going to be challenging as it will be hostage to political and security dynamics.” Options include crossborder pipelines through Jordan and resurrecting an old pipeline across Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea, the Iraq Pipeline in Saudi Arabia. The Jordan option may stand a better chance of success. A memorandum of understanding signed earlier this year between the Jordanian and Iraqi authorities includes provision for exports of up to 1 million bpd of Iraqi crude through a new pipeline stretching from Haditha to Aqaba, on the Red Sea. There are no easy options for Baghdad. But compared to the situation just five years ago – when Iraq was wracked by bitter sectarian conflict and pumping fewer barrels than under the sanctionshit Saddam Hussein era – the problems of plenty are no problem at all.

OMV shows upstream plans Austrian company reveals new business strategy

NEWS Hall 11, Stand 11060A 11-14 November

OMV Aktiengesellschaft, one of Austria’s largest listed industrial companies in oil exploration and production, had group sales of EUR34.05 billion as of 2011. Exhibiting for the first time at ADIPEC 2012, the company is also hosting a number of technical presentations. Running its operations from its two core bases in Romania and Austria, OMV had proven oil and gas reserves of approximately 1.13 billion BOE (barrel of oil equivalent) and production of around 288,000 BOE per day as of year-end 2011. The company has an annual refining capacity of 22.3 million tonnes. As of the end of 2011, it also has 4500 filling stations across 13 countries. OMV entered the Abu Dhabi market in 1994, when IPIC (International Petroleum Investment Company) acquired 19.6 per cent of its share capital. In 2011, IPIC increased this to 24.9 per cent. In June 2012, OMV and Wintershall signed an upstream

Screw pump manufacturer, Leistritz Pumpen, has been doing business in the Middle East for the past 15 years. This is the company’s fourth ADIPEC. It currently has projects in the UAE and Oman.

“Recent projects have included tank farm projects in Abu Dhabi and Fujairah,” said Thomas Talarczyk, area sales manager for the company. “Over the past two years we have completed high value projects for six terminals in Fujairah.” The firm currently has

partners in Abu Dhabi and for the Northern Emirates in Sharjah. Expectations at this year’s event are to find agent partners for Oman, Kuwait and Iraq.

agreement with ADNOC to appraise the Shuweihat sour gas and condensate field in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. “The technical presentations will allow ADIPEC visitors to learn more about its projects in the region and its aim to secure present and future energy supply through sustainable methods,” an OMV spokesman said. The company is taking part in ADIPEC to promote a shift in its business strategy, In September 2011, it unveiled a revised corporate strategy, ‘Profitable Prowth’. According to the strategy, OMV intends to increasingly divert its investments from the refining and filling-station business to the upstream business (Exploration & Production), where two thirds of future investments will be made. OMV’s plan is to increase the E&P weighting in the overall portfolio from 35 per cent to 55 per cent by 2021. At regional level, the investment focus is to be on the Caspian Sea, Africa and the Middle East.
