CREATING Spartans

FROM

PRESIDENT Dear De La Salle Community: “To touch the hearts of your students is the greatest miracle you can perform” and “God expects you to touch hearts” (Med 139.3). So says our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle. While he may have written these words nearly 300 years ago, they remain as central to our work as ever before. It isn’t as lofty as it sounds. We know we perform miracles every day on Winton Drive: sometimes it is in the chance encounters in between classes, or the searing one-line comments from an educator. We are reminded by Confucius that, “Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace.” Peace is desperately needed and we know that the work of our Lasallian partners and Brothers makes possible the miracles our world needs, especially right now.

This edition of the Union is a testament to how De La Salle High School forms Spartans into men of faith, integrity, and scholarship. For nearly sixty years we have been resolute in our conviction to form young people in an environment that is moral, caring, and joyful. It is our exceptionally talented faculty, staff, and coaches who ensure that our values remain unwavering and are as timeless and timely as ever before. It is because of these people, some of whom are honored in this edition, that our students can become men who break the cycles of violence, poverty, apathy, and fear. This sounds miraculous to me! Since 1680, Lasallian education has a through-line centered on a relationship between God, the student, and the educator – inside and outside of the classroom. This vibrant partnership can be found on the following pages of the Union as you see in the article Spartans Over the Years reflecting on how they were loved, guided, and instructed. We often say that the process is more important than the end result, and that end result includes understanding what being a Spartan actually means. Enjoy your reading and share your thoughts with us, too. Whether an alumnus, an alumni parent, a staff member, or a friend, let us know how we might have helped you become a Spartan by emailing dlscommunications@dlshs.org. We’d love to hear from you. Finally, my deepest thanks to the many donors who can be found in this Annual Report. Your support of De La Salle makes it possible for us to touch hearts and perform miracles. It isn’t hyperbole to say that our mission isn’t possible without you. Please accept my gratitude on behalf of our young men, programs, and Mission – all of which benefit from your generosity. As we pause as a nation to give thanks for our many blessings, be assured we count you among those blessings. Until next time, Go (be) Spartans!

The School Seal The school seal is an important part of the identity of De La Salle High School. The symbols used to make up the seal have particular meanings that reflect the values and purpose of the school. In the center of the seal is the Chi Rho (Kye Row). This is the Greek abbreviation of the title “Christ.” The first two letters of the word Christos or “Christ” are “Chi” and “Rho,” represented in the Greek alphabet as a capital “X” and “P.” The fleur-de-lis, with “lis” meaning lily in French, reminds us of our French origins with Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The lamp is a symbol of knowledge, reminding us of our primary purpose as a school — education. The section of broken chain represents freedom — freedom from ignorance. The chain surrounding the seal signifies strength and unity. “Les Hommes de Foi” is French for “Men of Faith.”

Graduation 2023 Charlie Kratus, Class of 2023 Valedictorian Being a Spartan means that you do what’s right over what is easy. Being a Spartan means that you are there for your brothers when they need you, like the Kairos Leaders who selflessly went back to be able to share the experience with their brothers. Being a Spartan means that you are a role model to others, like the OnBoard! and NHS members, who sacrifice their time to enrich the spirit of Brotherhood on campus. More than anything, being a Spartan means that you are becoming the man that God wants you to be, whether that was through sports, theatre, robotics, band, clubs, friends, or just by being you. I believe that over the last four years, all of us have made significant progress in this journey.

Jack Christensen, Class of 2023 Salutatorian If I had to define what it means to be a Spartan in one word, I would probably choose kindness. All that we’ve been taught, all that the Brotherhood is, all that De La Salle stands for, is ultimately kindness. So as you continue your journey, as you are faced with choices, with both hatred and love, with both sorrow and joy, remember where you came from. If you do, I know that you will all continue to live a life of excellence, the life of a Spartan.

3 | Union Magazine

David J. Holquin, President Being a Spartan means that you never quit because you know you are loved. Through Kairos you were taught to Live the Fourth. With every breakfast burrito, teacher reminding you to turn in your work, or even tech rehearsal outside because of a power outage, you know that the only thing more valuable than the diploma you walk offstage with today is who has walked with you, and will in the future. That’s Spartan Brotherhood. That’s the love we gave to you and will always be here to give.

Dr. Heather Alumbaugh, Vice President for Academic Life You made the choice to build community, not only by being brothers, but by brothering. Not by avoiding challenge, but by seizing the opportunity to create a better self. From a class that learned all the things you were forced to learn during the pandemic, confronted the challenges the world put in front of you and that were not of your making, and made intentional decisions to Brother your brothers, we have every confidence that you will continue to embrace the gifts that you have and generously share. You are profoundly and wisely Lasallian in your understanding that being in relationships requires active participation, faith, and a total commitment to the idea that as God’s children, we have the capacity to love and to be loved.

Jennifer Stein

Director of Student Activities Jennifer Stein is a relatively new face at Winton Drive. She has been at De La Salle for just over a year. However, the mark she has made in this short time has been immense – from introducing a plethora of exciting new activities and intramurals, to dances that appeal to the entire student body and a renewed emphasis on student recognition and leadership. Interestingly, Jennifer’s pathway into Student Activities began with a love of libraries and how they build community through universal accessibility. It was this appreciation, and a discovery that she liked working with teenagers, that led her to take a librarian position with her alma mater, Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School (SJND) in Alameda 17 years ago. While at SJND, Jennifer quickly realized that “the best way to support students is to get involved.” And that is exactly what she did. Over the course of her time at SJND, Jennifer directed six musicals, participated in countless retreats and service opportunities, and led a number of educational trips – including travel to Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Ecuador, Peru, and Thailand. By the time she officially transitioned into a Student Activities role with the school, she had fully embraced her passion to positively impact her students’ present and future lives. Now, De La Salle gets to reap the benefits of everything that Jennifer has learned as she sets out to celebrate each and every student at our school. Her ultimate goal is to make the Spartan experience a fun and memorable one that is inclusive and creates a true sense of belonging and community. We recently caught up with Jennifer to learn more about what makes her tick. What is the one thing you want readers to know about you? I genuinely care about the students and the work that I do. I have high expectations, but I also offer high levels of support. If you can dream it, I can help you achieve it. I am always open and thrive off building relationships with others.

When did you first feel like an adult? The first time I ran out of toilet paper and realized that no one else was going to buy it for me!

What is the one thing that you would fix about the world if you could wave a magic wand? Bi-partisanship. I just want us all to work together. We need each other. We are stronger when we are together and not divided. We must listen, hear each other, and work together for positive change. What is your biggest accomplishment? Paying off my student loans! I paid for my Bachelor of Arts degree while living and working on my own. When I decided to go to graduate school, I got some support from my Grandpa, which was awesome, but I still had a lot of outstanding debt. It took a lot of discipline and planning to pay it all off. What is your most treasured object and why? My husband says this is pathetic, but it has to be my teddy bear. I didn’t have her from birth, but I have had her since high school, and she is what I would grab in a fire for sure. She is just a huge source of comfort and goes with me on all my travels. What is a piece of advice you’ve been given that you pass down to students? Just be yourself. You are awesome!!!

What superpower would you like to wake up with? I would really like to fly. I have dreams where I run like a cheetah, and sometimes I just take off and float. It’s so cool. I would also like all of my emails to get magically answered. What makes you feel like a kid again? Being in or around water. Every year, since I was born, my extended family gets together at Capitola Beach. I have so many memories of digging for sand crabs, getting buried in the sand, and bodysurfing. I just love playing in the water. That’s why I love working in education. I love summer and I love to play. Go outside and play! What most excites you about your role at De La Salle? Building strong relationships with students. I had three students message me when they left for college. It meant a lot. I know that I made an impact on them, and they made an impact on me. While three out of 1,000 may not seem like a high return on investment, it is still meaningful. I hope to expand my impact in the years to come. These students will always be a part of my life, and I hope that my work will always be a part of theirs.

What experience have you had that you don’t believe anyone else has had? I think we have all had experiences that we don’t think anyone else has had, but if we take the time to get to know each other, we will realize we are not all that different. A very close friend took their own life in college, and it shook my world. I shut down, didn’t talk about how it affected me, and, as a result, experienced a lot of anxiety. I now realize how important it is to discuss and support mental health.

Spartans Over Years

E

veryone who has walked the hallways of Winton Drive as a student, parent, or teacher knows about De La Salle’s Integral Student Outcomes (ISO’s) of Faith, Integrity, and Scholarship. They understand that students are expected to graduate with Gospel values like love, compassion, inclusion, justice, and community embedded into the very core of their being. They know that students have been taught what it means to be a man of integrity and are expected to conduct themselves with honesty, fairness, respect, and a strong moral compass. They recognize that a pursuit of lifelong learning helps develop a growth mindset, and they share the belief that effort directly influences results. But how do these traits play out in day-to-day life for our Spartans? An excellent place to start is with our Honor Roll. Last semester, De La Salle had nearly 50% of its student body make Honor Roll (135 seniors, 112 juniors, 112 sophomores, and 118 freshmen). Of these students, 63% achieved High Honors, with a GPA over 3.75. While this is a solid number, it is important to recognize that value is attached to more than just academic prowess at De La Salle. Take, for instance, our National Honor Society (NHS) and California Scholarship Federation (CSF) students. While these two organizations have minimum academic requirements for membership that equate to a combination of predominantly A/B grades, both seek qualities above and beyond good academic standing. They want to see character, citizenship, leadership, and service. Currently, De La Salle has 107 returning seniors, juniors, and sophomores in NHS. Similarly, CSF just recognized 166 seniors, juniors, and sophomores for Semester 2 of the 2022-23 school year. Indeed, leadership and citizenship, in particular, are woven into the very fabric of life at De La Salle. The school offers three leadership classes (including Service Leadership) in its curriculum. It also gives students countless other ways to learn leadership skills through dedicated programs like SCORE, OnBoard!, Admissions Ambassadors, and 12th Man. Each program focuses on a unique set of goals – whether this is to promote positive social relations among a diverse student body, to welcome and support incoming 9th graders, to represent the school with prospective students and families, or to set an example of sportsmanship and Brotherhood. Likewise, students are exposed to the concept of service from the moment they walk onto campus. They are taught about the school’s founding principle of “concern for the poor and social justice” and are given opportunities to give back and serve through various schoolwide fundraisers, donation drives, and classroom projects, as well as philanthropic and charitable initiatives run by Student Activities or sports programs. At the same time, De La Salle’s Campus Ministry Department creates retreat and immersion experiences where students can learn first-hand what it is like to walk in the shoes of someone less fortunate than themselves. Through all of this work, De La Salle students are able to take on and absorb what they are seeing, hearing, and experiencing. The characteristics of a Spartan become ingrained in who they are as individuals. It becomes part of their very nature. As such, on any given day, there are countless examples of students (and former students) applying what they have learned. On campus, you see it in how students embrace one another during breaks and on the field. How they lift each other up, celebrate each other’s wins, and support each other during times of difficulty. You see it in how they take on responsibility, lend a helping hand, and step up when needed. But there are also less ubiquitous moments that you hear about through the grapevine. Those one-on-one or personal moments that may seem small but which mean so much to the person or people involved.

9 | Union Magazine

Take, for instance, De La Salle’s World Languages Department Chair, Kelly Gardner. Over the course of her 37 years with the school, she has had lots of opportunities to see boys put into practice their teachings about being good men and helping others. However, two moments in particular have deeply touched her heart and made her “proud of what our boys get out of a De La Salle education.”

Last year, Mrs. Howett, a recent cancer survivor, experienced it when her students all surprised her by wearing pink to a Save Mount Diablo field trip as a show of support before she took medical leave.

The first came when her son, Willi ‘12, was diagnosed with leukemia in the summer of 1994 at age four. Understandably, it was an incredibly challenging time for Kelly and her family. But students at De La Salle made sure the Gardner family knew they were not alone.

It is also something echoed by Ms. Stevenson, “Here and there, students will do something for you; they will give back in ways that make those intangible moments real and concrete.” She specifically recalls a time last year when one of her Honors English 2 students, Luca Fontana, brought her a bust of Caesar that he had made using a 3D printer. He was inspired by the class lessons on The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, and it was his way of showing appreciation for his teacher. The bust also functioned as a pen holder.

“The football team had a jersey made for Willi with his name on it, and he had his picture taken with the team,” Kelly explains. “He was so proud of that jersey and the picture of him standing in the middle of all the ‘big kids’.” In addition, the “National Honor Society boys decided to hold a ‘Weenies for Willi’ sale. They gave me all the proceeds from the hot dogs they sold at a baseball game to help with anything he might need. And the varsity baseball team signed a baseball and gave it to him,” she adds.

“I think it says so much about the young men here at De La Salle,” she said at the time.

“The thoughtfulness of the gift was overwhelming, but what was more moving was what it revealed about Luca’s appreciation of the play. The words ‘Et tu Brute?’ came to life in that pen holder; the clever design reflects the depths of betrayal Caesar experienced at the hands of his friends. I was actually moved to tears.”

It was students who also came to Kelly’s aid when her parents lost everything in the Paradise Camp Fire in 2018. “One of my students and his friend put together a huge basket filled with things that they thought my 80-year-old parents could need. There were grooming supplies, socks, towels, blankets, coffee mugs, gift cards, and so many thoughtful items. It made a very difficult time for my parents a little brighter. Both my parents commented about what a wonderful school I work at and what incredible students we have. And I wholeheartedly agree!” This exhibition of compassion, thoughtfulness, and love toward De La Salle faculty is a story as old as time, or at least as old as De La Salle’s founding.

FALL 2023 | 10

Spartans Over Years However, it is not just faculty who are the recipients of thoughtful acts of kindness. Mrs. Wiese, Director of Development at De La Salle, recently welled up when sharing a story about how then-senior Charlie Kratus, not only donated all of his old lacrosse gear to her son (who had expressed interest in learning to play the sport), but also took the time to engage with him through text to find out how he was progressing. That said, you can’t talk about being a Spartan without talking about the Spartan Brotherhood. Coach Alumbaugh recalls how last year’s five football team captains recently wrote letters to the current team, even though three of them are in the midst of their own college football season. In the letters, which were read out loud during chapel service before the Folsom game, they not only encouraged the new team but also detailed what it meant to be a Spartan. “The fact that each of these young men took significant time to reach out to a team that they aren’t even on anymore was a selfless and thoughtful act that was very impactful to our team,” explains Alumbaugh. Each year, De La Salle Spartan alumni step up to help and support their brothers through small acts that have a significant impact. Whether it is to share their learnings and life experiences through letters, career days, guest speaker engagements, and more. Or, in the case of the class of 2020, taking the red-eye to Philadelphia to support their brother, Kyle Harrison, as he took the field for his Major League debut, pitching for the San Francisco Giants.

A Story from Ms. Stevenson In the Spring of 2000 (my third year teaching at De La Salle), I had a senior in my Classics of Horror class. His name was Nate Kirkham. He had a rough semester. His father died suddenly, and it put the family in crisis. Nate still came to class every day, but I could tell he was hurting. He was engaged in the material, but he often spent time in his own thoughts, doodling in his book. I kept him after class one day to see how he was doing. He admitted it was hard to focus on everything given what was going on, but he was enjoying the class; in particular, our study of Dracula. We had an essay coming up, but I knew it would be a lot for him to tackle an assignment of that scope. We talked about the book and the essay. The conversation eventually turned to a discussion about his drawing and what I realized were beautiful and artistic expressions, a means for Nate to work through his emotional distress. I asked him how he felt about drawing a picture of Dracula rather than writing an essay on the novel. He loved the idea. For weeks, he worked on the assignment, ultimately spending 40 hours on it. On the last day of class before graduation, he presented the final piece. It was magnificent – an accurate, haunting, and masterful account of Dracula’s character from the novel. He explained his process and the choices 1 1 | Union Magazine

However, it was what happened to Hank Tripaldi ‘24 toward the end of the last school year that really epitomizes how Spartans rally around their brothers. Tripaldi, was one of the heroes in the varsity baseball team’s Northern California Division 1 Championship victory. As a junior third baseman, Tripaldi helped key the team’s comeback from a seventh-inning deficit against Valley Christian. His late-inning grand slam added four runs to the scoreboard as De La Salle clinched the title for the second year in a row.

What most people don’t know, though, is that 38 days earlier, when his beloved mother, Robin, passed away from breast cancer, Hank’s dad, David, asked De La Salle to allow him to break the news to his son while he was at school. He did this because he wanted his son to be surrounded by his teammates and brothers. As Coach Jeans told Cal-Hi Sports at the time, “They couldn’t fill her void, but for the last six weeks they kept him functioning, afloat and nearly whole…in the face of such a tragedy.”

This is what it means to be a Spartan.

he made in how he rendered the figure, taking me through the nuances and subtleties. I told him I would frame it and keep it on display in my classroom. About three years after his graduation, Nate was struck by a drunk driver on Ygancio Valley Road and was killed. He was the first student I lost after becoming a teacher. The loss hit me hard. All I could think of was his family, the losses they had already experienced… Nate’s picture took on a deeper significance for me. It was a tangible reminder of his presence in my classroom and in my life, the gift of his talent, and the brilliance of his soul. The image stood for his resiliency in the face of loss, and it now inspired me to do the same. Over time, Nate’s picture has stood as a reminder of the fragility of life and as a call for me as a teacher to never lose sight of the fact that every student has a story. It also reminded me to lead with compassion in my work with my students and to find creative ways for them to demonstrate learning. I recalled the story of Nate’s picture a few weeks ago for my seniors. I told them how Mr. Fordon ‘00 had Nate’s jersey hanging in his room as a tangible symbol of his friend and former teammate. I also told them I thought there used to be a quote or memorial in the locker room, but I thought it had been removed or altered when the locker room was redone a while back. The next class period, Chris Biller, one of my seniors, approached me during class to say he had gone in search of the memorial and had found it. He took a picture of it for me, a plaque outside the Coaches’ Office, to honor Nate’s time here and his lasting legacy. I was so grateful for the gesture. This kind of reciprocity is why I teach, why I keep teaching. I never anticipated how much my students would inspire me, through their talents, their strength, and their generosity.

Through the Eyes of a Legend:

Six Steps to Creating

1 3 | Union Magazine

Spartans

Y

ou see a lot when you are Dean of Students. That is certainly the case for Joe Aliotti. The saying, “the man, the myth, the legend,” seems apropos when you think of Joe. He is practically an institution in his own right and, for thousands of Spartans, he will forever be attached to their memories of De La Salle High School. Pick up any yearbook from the last twenty-five years, and you’ll feel, if not see, his presence in the pictures of students enjoying life at De La Salle because he was always there to ensure students were safe and behaving appropriately. Joe is the man who can quiet a room full of 1,000 young men with just a brief sentence (no microphone needed) and who students respect, fear, and adore all at the same time. For his part, Joe has amassed plenty of memories of his own over the last quarter of a century. He is also full of little pearls of wisdom that collectively provide better insight into how the school creates Spartans or, as he puts it, “turns boys into men.” We caught up with him on a sunny fall day to learn more about his experience as Dean of Students now that he has stepped away from the role to work in the school’s Advancement Office. The information he shared boils down to six areas that we are calling “Aliotti’s Six Steps to Creating Spartans.” A lot of Joe’s approach to his work has been driven by his upbringing and how he, in turn, has parented his own children. One of his life lessons came when he was little. In his house, dinner was always at 5:30 pm. Always. One day, he wanted to finish the game in the street because it was “a tight game.” When he showed up to dinner, it was 5:40 pm, and his family was already eating. After dinner, when he got up to leave the table, his father asked him where he was going. Joe replied that he was going to go out with friends. Needless to say, his father said ‘no’. As Joe puts it, “You learn in a hurry. I was never late for another dinner. That’s why I’m a stickler for being on time and having a schedule. I was disrespectful to my family. I was disrespectful to my mom, who had cooked. I was disrespectful to my father, who worked hard all day long and wanted to sit down with the family.” It is only natural then that when asked what advice he had for parents of teens, Joe says, “Remember, you’re the parent. Have a good time and all that, but don’t let your kids run the roost. It’s your work that puts a roof over their heads. You who put food on the table. You who put clothing on them. That’s your cell phone. Your computer. They need to appreciate and thank you.” Like many others attached to De La Salle, Joe points to love as the secret sauce to being a Spartan – self-love, love for those in your life, and love for strangers. It is love that has driven his mission to turn young men into good people and good citizens. If you ask him what a Spartan is, he’ll quickly reply, “It is a young man who does the right thing when nobody is looking. He always tries to represent his family, school, and himself in the best way possible. And, when he makes a mistake (which we all do), he learns from it.”

Aliotti’s Six Steps Partnership “We help build the house. Parents start the foundation and the frames. We help with the wiring. We kind of piggyback. It’s everybody working together in partnership.” “At De La Salle, we always say faith, integrity, and scholarship. Our teachers do the scholarship part. Campus Ministry does the faith part (along with our teachers and staff), and then we all come together to teach integrity. Integrity comes from the student himself, as well as the parents and the school. As the old saying goes, ‘It takes a village.’ But teaching the kids what’s right and what’s wrong is so important.” Little Things = Big Things “You take care of the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves. That’s why I was always on the dress code: having a belt, making sure the students were clean-shaven, that their hair was appropriate, and that they wore ties when expected. I believe that [if] you take care of that stuff, they’ll remember they are important and, when they grow up, they’ll have a better understanding of how to behave when they go out into the real world.” Trust “Parents have to trust us, trust the school. They need to know that when they drop their kid off, they can trust the people there to do the right things and be in line with them as parents.” Communication “I believe in communication. I don’t have a problem calling [parents] when something goes wrong. I’m a parent myself, and I know if my kid was doing something wrong, I’d want to know what was going on. I’ve never not called a parent. You always have to be honest with them. So yes, it may hurt, but you’re always talking to them.” Discipline “They know that I care about them, even though it might’ve been tough love. You have a conversation with them and communicate why you are disciplining them. You say things like, ‘You did it, and this is why you have to be disciplined. That’s wrong. Do you know that is wrong?’ Ninety-nine percent of the time, they’ll say, ‘Yeah, I know I shouldn’t have done that.’ It’s not like I invented this. They know that they did something wrong. That was how I was raised. If you did things right, everything was okay. When you did things wrong, you were in trouble.” Love “I took care of students because I saw something good in them like their parents did, and I wanted to work with them. You treat them like yours and put in the work, the partnership, and the love. They get it

after that, and that’s what the goal is – to make sure they go out into the real world as a good person.” FALL 2023 | 14

How FaithShapesSpartans

Every student at De La Salle has an understanding of the school’s origins. They know the story of St. John Baptist de La Salle all those years ago in 17th century France, and they are aware that their education is thanks to a Roman Catholic religious order of men called the Christian Brothers, who founded the school in 1965 on the belief that all students have a right to a human and Christian education regardless of their financial circumstances.

At the same time, students actively participate in the school’s daily opening and closing of prayers with “Let us remember…that we are in the holy presence of God” and “Saint John Baptist de La Salle…Pray for us! Live Jesus in our hearts…Forever!” They attend school-wide liturgies, class liturgies, and other prayer opportunities and faith-based engagements. Sports teams take part in daily prayers, as well as prayer services and program Masses. More devout students also seek out deeper ways to embrace their connection to God through things like Campus Ministry Leadership and the Lasallian Youth Club. In fact, it is safe to say that faith takes on a truly permeable role at De La Salle. The Oxford Dictionary defines faith as either a “complete trust or confidence in someone or something” or a “strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.” Both definitions can be applied at De La Salle. Likewise, both definitions can take on different nuances depending on whether a student is part of the 70% who identify as Catholic or the 30% who are either non-Catholic or unstated.

1 5 | Union Magazine

What remains universal, however, is how faith can influence morals and values. It is the very fact that the school is built on St. John Baptist de La Salle’s social initiatives and commitment to helping students live Gospel values, regardless of their religious affiliation, that produces Spartans. At De La Salle, faith shapes how Spartans think about and respond to the world, the habits they form, and how they connect with others. It nurtures attributes like compassion and selflessness, which, in turn, lead to practices like volunteering and charitable giving. Faith also brings a sense of purpose, belonging, community, and hope. It provides a moral compass and a source of comfort during difficult times. Faith encourages self-reflection and personal growth, and creates resilience. Yet faith is also about personal relationships, respect, and trust. Parents trust their sons to a Lasallian education precisely because it is centered on Catholic values that are emphasized through academic excellence, inclusion, and respect for the individual. They trust that their student will be enriched by cultural, intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual development in much the same way as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed that people everywhere should have “three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits.” For their part, students trust that their teachers will engage them with love in their hearts. That they will always guide from a place of understanding, compassion, and respect, and with their best interests at the forefront of everything that they do. Someone who has seen this in action day after day is Scott Drain, De La Salle’s Director of Student Support Services. He recently described what happened when one of the school’s senior band students found out that his college marching band already had enough people who played his instrument. “Our band director bought him a different instrument and spent long hours teaching the student to play this new instrument just so he could have a place in the college marching band.”

The story is not unique. Teacher moderators for the Robotics Club open up the De La Salle Fabrication Room every Saturday, for months on end, so that students have a place to come to develop their skills. The school’s Theatre Director will proactively seek out students who are having difficulty “finding their place” and then create roles for them within Company – even if there isn’t a need – just so that the student can feel included and part of the group. Then there was earlier this year when the mother of a senior was hospitalized for an extended period of time. “Without even knowing the student, teachers and staff, banded together to raise over $1,000 to help support the family with food gift cards,” Scott explains. He also shared how “when a teacher recently witnessed a student spill lunch on his polo shirt, which left a stain, he went to the Bookstore and

bought the student a new shirt with his own money, knowing that the student felt self-conscious and didn’t have money of his own to get a new shirt.” Similarly, De La Salle students look to their Spartan brothers with trust that they will be supported and lifted up at all times, and not just in those times of need. It is this trust that allows them to be emotionally honest – able to communicate their feelings and hear each other’s feelings without judgment or criticism. At De La Salle, students are able to be their true selves, instead of a version of themselves. To borrow the words of a transfer student who was asked earlier this year what is different about De La Salle from his previous school, “No one is mean here; everyone is friendly and nice.” In a melting pot of cultures and social and economic differences, this doesn’t happen by accident.

Three Perspectives on Faith

Faith is something extremely personal because not everyone is at the same place in their walk with God. However, we caught up with Dr. Carrie Rehak (Religious Studies Department Chair), Andrew Berkes (Campus Minister for Faith and Retreats), and Brother John Hoover (Religious Studies Teacher) to get their take on faith and how it translates to De La Salle’s students.

How do you define faith?

Brother John: Since faith expresses itself in everyday life, I firmly believe God is present to me every day in the students he has entrusted to my care. Dr. Rehak: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 Mr. Berkes: My definition of faith is inspired by our former colleague and theologian, Mr. John McDonough. He was inspired by Thomas Aquinas when he said, “Faith is the belief in things we cannot see based on what we can see.” I like that, but I have a little addition to it: Faith is the belief in things I cannot see based on the things I can see and know to be true.” Whenever I am talking to my students, I tell them that I don’t think that “blind faith” should be what we strive for or what we should use to orient our lives. Our faith should always be informed, nurtured, and searching for greater understanding. Continued on page 17

FALL 2023 | 16

How do you think faith shapes our Spartan student body? Brother John: Our students’ faith clearly shapes and defines an often-used phrase on campus: “The Brotherhood.” Young men are willing to support each other, be present to each other, and help each other grow as members of one community – a community firmly rooted in our shared Lasallian Brotherhood.

Dr. Rehak: Even in times of great challenge, loss, or suffering, we are people of hope. Mr. Berkes: I think faith shapes our Spartan student body in more ways than we may acknowledge. Obviously, we see faith lived out when our students come together in prayer, both formally (like liturgies) and informally (a quick prayer before a game or before a test). But I also see a lived faith in the way the students see themselves in this world. I see their faith manifest in the service that they do for each other and for the community… the way they believe in each other and lean on each other.

How important is a moral foundation to the personal growth of young men, and why? Brother John: Having a fully developed, Gospel-based morality is essential in the rapidly changing world our young men are now a part of. It guides personal and collective decisions they will be making. Dr. Rehak: Faith-based, values-based education will help to point such modern-day challenges, such as AI, in a life-giving direction. Mr. Berkes: A moral foundation for our boys is so fundamental that we explicitly weave it into their curriculum of studies. During their junior year, they spend an entire year delving into Morality and Social

1 7 | Union Magazine

Justice. We also strive to create a strong moral foundation for these boys through our retreat programs, where they are challenged to be the best versions of themselves and become the person that God has called them to be. I believe our teachers across all subjects and disciplines are clear, whether explicitly or implicitly, of their moral expectations of these boys. They model what they want our boys to live out, which makes very clear how much a moral foundation is key to being a Spartan.

What are some of the values that you attach to De La Salle Spartans?

Brother John: By fully understanding the Gospel message, and following St. John Baptist de La Salle’s example, our students embody St. Paul’s wonderful message to the Corinthians: “So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Cor 13:13) Dr. Rehak: Love, justice, and mercy. Mr. Berkes: I believe our Spartans embody the Gospel value of service and putting their faith into action. Whether the students will say it aloud or not, I believe our students live out what Jesus tells us in Matthew 25 that whatever we do “to the least of these,” we do to our Lord. I believe our boys live that out in what they do. I also believe that our boys live out the Gospel value of solidarity. Our boys know how to stand together and support each other. Lastly, I believe our students strive to live out the Golden Rule of doing unto others as they would like done unto them. This corresponds with our Core Principle of Respect for All Persons. I hear time and time again from people outside our community who see how our boys act on campus and off campus, and by far, they are impressed with the way our boys treat others with the respect that they deserve.

2023 Lasallian Educator

Year

Joe Grantham

Last school year, at the end of De La Salle’s annual Saint La Salle Mass, an announcement was made that elicited simultaneous cheering, thunderous applause, and a standing ovation from students. The news was that long-time Religion teacher Joe Grantham was to receive the 2023 Lasallian Educator of the Year Award. It was a moment long in the making. After 26 years at De La Salle, and with retirement on the horizon, it was a much-deserved honor – as well as an emotional one. As the students near the aisle clamored to give Joe a high-five as he made his way to the stage, the feeling of appreciation for Joe was palpable. The sentiment was verbally echoed by Dr. Alumbaugh, who explained that, during the nomination process, “multiple faculty members expressed how Joe has a great ability to capture the presence of his students and that they often hear these students say that Joe is their favorite teacher.” Throughout his decades-long teaching career at De La Salle, Joe held many roles. While he is most known as a beloved Religion teacher, he first joined De La Salle as an English teacher. He also served as the school’s Admissions Director for 17 years, and moderated clubs like Amnesty International, the 33 1/3 Music Club, and the Sports Talk Club (a personal favorite of his). At the same time, Joe established and organized the first Social Justice Weeks at the school, where some of the themes included Sweatshops, Child Soldiers, Art & Justice, and the Environment. Through Campus Ministry, Joe was heavily involved with the school’s immersion and retreat programs. He participated in more than a dozen Ven A Ver immersion experiences, which are designed to give students the opportunity to quite literally “walk in the shoes of the poor.” Likewise, he also attended many of the Father/Parent & Son retreats and Kairos retreats, as well as the freshman, sophomore, and junior retreat programs. At Mass, he was a regular fixture as a Eucharistic minister – distributing Holy Communion to the student congregation. Sadly for De La Salle, the 2022-23 school year was Joe’s last year teaching at Winton Drive. He is now enjoying everything that retirement has to offer including lots of hiking with his wife Patti and dogs Dizzy and Domino, barbequing, reading, meeting up with other De La Salle retirees, and writing. However, equally important, he is using his newfound free time to get ready for his daughter’s wedding in New Orleans, as well as visit with his parents in Kansas City, and his son (alumnus Joseph ‘12) in Baltimore. While his presence is greatly missed on campus, he has most definitely not been forgotten by students and faculty alike. The mere mention of his name brings forth fond memories that are discussed in hallways, in faculty/staff meetings, and more. The feeling is mutual. “I sure do miss hanging out and laughing with my colleagues. So many great people and memories. And of course the boys. You know, it really wasn’t so much the curriculum (of course they got that); but it was more about connecting with them as young men on their journey to becoming good men, husbands, dads, and friends down the road. I hope what they learned from me didn’t necessarily come from a book, but more from my example as a human being – which I think is what the Founder sought.” To borrow the words of Dr. Alumbaugh, this year’s award recipient is a “one-of-a-kind educator.”

The Lasallian Educator of the Year award honors an educator who is chosen by his or her peers to receive a very special award, and is given to a faculty member who exemplifies the qualities of St. La Salle, specifically meeting the following criteria: A dedicated and committed individual who is an exemplary educator. An educator who understands his/her own dignity as a child of God so that he/she can pass this on to students. person who cherishes and cares for his/her students like an older brother or sister, A and, above all, someone who is committed to a life of faith and expresses that in a commitment to teach his or her students the importance of the spiritual life, inculcating living values.

What is a

SPARTAN? T

wenty-five years ago, the head coach of the nation’s most successful high school football program sat down and penned a speech for his team’s end-of-season banquet. That coach was Bob Ladouceur, and his team belonged to De La Salle High School. Since that moment, the speech – known as “What is a Spartan?” – has served as a blueprint for not just the school’s football program but its entire Athletic program and even, arguably, all of the De La Salle students who have since walked the halls of Winton Drive. In “What is a Spartan?,” Bob talks about characteristics like hard work, grit, and determination. But, ultimately, he frames the success of his football teams as having been the result of an openness to love. In his eyes, the most important component of the Spartan tradition is a commitment to create a brotherhood. A Brotherhood where players know how to “sacrifice for a just cause, cooperate with [their] fellow humans, respect the dignity of others, and respond when called upon.” It is through love, that Spartans win in life. Love is why and how individuals put forward their best selves. It translates to how they conduct themselves on and off the field and within the outside community. It is how one teammate can count on another teammate. As Bob so eloquently puts it, “Wherever I go or whatever I do, I carry my team with me, knowing full well that I am connected to a group that loves, accepts, and respects me.” We recently caught up with some of our alumni to see if Bob’s “What is a Spartan?” essay still resonates with them. Here is what they had to say. Author’s Note: If you would like to read Bob’s entire “What is a Spartan?” essay, go to www.dlshs.org/athletics.

In the Fall of 1991, I was eschewed out of my mom’s Chrysler Mini Van into a large parking lot on Winton Drive in Concord, CA. It was my first day of high school. Everything about the entire situation was new. Our family had moved to Concord from the Mission District in San Francisco less than 10 days prior. I knew zero people at the school. I did not know where to go. Fast forward 30 years. That parking lot is much smaller, and Chrysler does not even exist. Most importantly, I know a great deal of amazing people, and I do not wander without a purpose. There are terrific institutions and organizations throughout this country… [However] without question, De La Salle High School has had some of the biggest and most positive effects on my journey. I can say that the school, the culture, the family, and the love from this all-boys high school played a role. Spartans have been given a glimpse of what sacrifice, commitment, and love can do for a collective. Coach spoke to these ideas in his [What is a Spartan?”] essay. These specific values are taught daily in classes, on teams, and within clubs. They are instilled by teachers and counselors, from coaches and upper-class peers to the newest Spartans. All of these positive influences truly give Spartans a foundation to draw on. I felt [Brotherhood and love] as a student in the 90’s. I felt it when I returned to coach basketball in the 2000s. I felt it as an Alumni Board and committee member from the 2010’s to today. It can be seen in the staff that remain dedicated, decade after decade. It can be seen in the coaches who give enormous chunks of their precious time. And it may be most evident in the number of alumni that come back to give as teachers, coaches, mentors, staff members, and [benefactors]. These examples illustrate that the values that Coach touches upon are real, true, and sustained, three decades after he put pen to paper. 1 9 | Union Magazine

I have come to realize that the experience I had – that we had – was unique. I remain friends with many of those I graduated with – celebrating each other’s successes, watching children grow, attending birthday parties and graduations, and sticking with each other through the many struggles, foreseeable and not, that life delivers. What connected us was our commitment to one another. It may have originated in classes, a sport, in Company, in Campus Ministry, or anywhere students came together. These bonds were forged not just on mutual interest but mutual responsibility for one another. And bonds of responsibility require more time, more effort, more commitment – but they are also the ones that last longest and stand strongest against adversity. We are all indebted to the teachers, coaches, advisors, Brothers, staff, and everyone who made our De La Salle experience what it was. They consistently challenged us to temper intelligence with wisdom and morality; to balance our personal efforts with self-sacrifice and support for others; and to recognize our “victories” result not from our efforts against others but from our support of others and their support of us.

Bob’s article definitely still resonates. A lot of the values and skills I learned at De La Salle impacted my life in high school and today. The idea of being there for my teammates is used with my partners at work, my family at home, and coaching my kids’ youth teams. Being a good teammate is being accountable for doing the best I can, whatever my role. If everyone is selfless and is doing the best they can for a common goal, then the team will be more successful. Those values were ingrained in me as a Spartan and still hold true today. I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of this community.

Marcus Chin ‘07

As I read over Coach Ladouceur’s essay, I was hit with a wave of flashbacks from when I was a student. Everything he mentions is not just a football-specific culture. It was a schoolwide culture both in and out of athletics. Athletics is something that is always mentioned because it is a commonality that is easily shared amongst students, which allows the idea of Brotherhood to come to the surface for everyone to see. In water polo, we were taught the same core values of team before self. We were asked to play for each other and learn the ins and outs of how we all functioned within a team system. I became so close to my team that those same teammates comprised 80% of my wedding party. To this day, they are some of my closest friends, and I contribute the long-lasting friendships I created to the teachings and characteristics I developed while at De La Salle. As I walk around campus now as a member of the staff, I see the same friendships being created. I listen to how some of the students talk to each other, always offering help in and out of the classroom. Something that hit me within the first month of teaching at DLS was when a student-athlete came up to me on his own because he knew one of his teammates was struggling. He had said, ‘I will make sure he stays on top of his classwork.’ After I heard that, I knew the love that a Brotherhood needs was still strong. FALL 2023 | 20

Giving Week may be over, but it’s not too late to give! Every October, we ask you, members of our treasured community, to invest in what we do here on Winton Drive. Hopefully, you had a chance last month to see how, through your gifts, we are able to make a significant difference in the lives of our Spartans. If you weren’t able to donate during Giving Week, we hope you will consider doing so now. Even with the tremendous support we received in October, there is still more we can do, and every penny counts. To donate, go to dlshs.org/givenow. We cannot thank you enough!

Karen Hall

Karen Hall came to De La Salle High School in the summer of 2015 and spent the next eight years teaching Spanish in the World Languages Department, which included Spanish III and IV, as well as AP and Honors Spanish courses. Following the completion of the 2022-23 school year, Seniora Hall announced her retirement from teaching. Before her time at De La Salle, she taught at Jesuit High School in Carmichael and was also a long-time Spanish tutor. Karen’s son Colton ’17 attended De La Salle and her daughter Makenna graduated from Carondelet in 2014.

Comments From Rick Graham

Sometimes I wonder if Karen had any real sense of what she meant to the people at De La Salle. She was a big part of the spirit of the school, a part that won’t be replaced. She genuinely cared for everyone, and always knew the right thing to say when someone was hurting. She is a consummate joker and inspirer of laughter, but mostly she is just a kind individual. What distinguished Karen from everyone else was her passion and love for the students. She was a constant example of boldness, fierceness, generosity, irreverence, and love for everyone at the school. She will truly be missed.

Joe Grantham

Joe Grantham retired from teaching at De La Salle High School at the end of the 2022-23 school year, following a 26-year run. Joe spent most of his years as a faculty member in the Religious Studies Department but also held the position of Director of Admissions from 2002 through 2018. Additionally, he was heavily involved with Campus Ministry activities such as immersion and retreat experiences. His son Joseph graduated from De La Salle in 2012.

Comments from Sean Bristol

Joe Grantham has always had a way of making every person feel important or special, and I always felt as if my voice and opinion mattered to him. Joe is who I wanted to be as a father, a teacher, and a mentor. During my son’s sophomore year at De La Salle, the only teacher that I cared that my son had was Joe (no offense to any other teacher). I felt that if he didn’t have Joe, my son would be missing a big part of the DLS experience because of his specific viewpoint on religion, music, and the world around him. His bits of advice like ‘never go to bed without kissing your kids goodnight’, or important questions like ‘have you heard the new Wilco album?’, to his very specific recommendations on how to BBQ ribs are things that I’ll always remember. I know that I’m a better person because of him.

Wendy Aliotti

After nine years running De La Salle’s beloved Cafeteria as its Food Services Manager, Wendy Aliotti hung up her apron for retirement in June of 2023. Wendy came to De La Salle in 2013, after working nine years for the Epicurean Group at Carondelet High School. All three of Wendy’s children attended De La Salle or Carondelet. Her sons Joey ’05 and Anthony ’06 are De La Salle graduates, while her daughter Kristin graduated from Carondelet in 2002. Her husband Joe Aliotti served as the Dean of Students at De La Salle from 1997-2023 and now works in the Advancement Office.

Comments from Jeff Villafania

Wendy made the De La Salle Cafeteria a better place for students, faculty, and staff to have good and nutritious meals, and I intend to maintain the legacy she created. Wendy has always been helpful, not only as a supervisor but as a friend.

Welcome Additions!

The 2023-24 school year saw 12 new additions to the faculty and staff at De La Salle. The latest Lasallian Partners, which includes two additions who joined the staff late during the 2022-23 school year, feature nine faculty members and five non-teaching individuals. Of particular note, the school now has a new Director of Faculty Development, Dean of Students, and Bishop Cummins Scholarship Program Coordinator. There have also been several additions to the maintenance and cafeteria staff. Garth Adlao ’93 – Bishop Cummins Scholarship Program Coordinator Garth has been a De La Salle community member for over 34 years, first as a student, then as a football coach, and now supporting Bishop Cummins Scholarship students. In his new role, Garth is focused on ensuring that scholarship students have a rich and transformative ‘Spartan’ experience that prepares them to be accepted, attend, and graduate from a college institution. He primarily serves as an advocate, academic advisor, and mentor for his students. Previously, Garth worked in the technology industry as a sales executive for over 20 years. He is also a product of De La Salle’s scholarship programs.

Dr. Will Dunford – Director of Faculty Development Dr. Will has 13 years of classroom experience teaching a wide variety of subjects including elementary school Art, middle school Math, high school Algebra, Digital Photography, and adult school English as a Second Language (ESL). He has spent the last 13 years as a high school administrator at several different schools throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and now takes on the role of Director of Faculty Development at De La Salle. Will earned a BS in Education from Central State University, an MA in Educational Leadership and Administration from Chapman University, and a Doctorate of Leadership in Educational Equity from UC Berkeley.

Rashad Nichols – Dean of Students Rashad is De La Salle’s new Dean of Students. Most recently, he was the Assistant Director for the Uprising Academy in Vallejo. This was one of several roles he held in his two decades with the Seneca Family of Agencies. He holds a BA in Communication Studies from St. Mary’s College, where he played baseball, and he is a Salesian College Preparatory graduate. He has over 20 years in the mental health field and he has a collaborative, systematic, and holistic approach to discipline. Outside of school, Rashad volunteers his time as a youth baseball and soccer coach. He looks forward to creating a sustainable culture of supporting students and the Spartan community. 2 3 | Union Magazine

De La Salle Alumni Reunions and Events 2023 De La Salle Grand Reunion

The De La Salle Alumni Association, in partnership with the Carondelet Alumnae Association, jointly hosted alums back to campus this past summer. At the Grand Reunion Celebration event, which was held on August 5, more than 275 gathered together to celebrate class years ending in 3s and 8s. However, the event was open to all alums from both schools and from any graduating class. It was the first time back to campus in a while for many of these alums, and a sense of nostalgia was in the air. But, more than anything else, it was so great to see our fellow Spartans and Cougars gather in person. Both campuses were open to tour during the day. The party started at Carondelet with food from Slow Hand BBQ and plenty of refreshments. It then moved to De La Salle for drinks and dancing in the Quad. Local cover band, Tainted Love (featuring De La Salle alumni Bray Gurnari ’90 and Alex Pels ‘86, and a special sax performance from current faculty member and alumnus Chris Curry ‘89) was the highlight of the evening. Thank you to everyone who came and danced the night away with us! As we begin planning for the summer of 2024, we want to get your feedback. We received rave reviews for the format of our recent 2022 and 2023 Grand Reunions. However, we know some classes would still prefer to gather individually. What does your class want? Let your voice be heard, and get involved in planning the next reunion! Contact Director of Alumni Relations, Tim Roberts ’88 at (925) 288-8171 or robertst@dlshs.org.

Water Polo and Cross Country Affinity Events

The first few weeks of fall are always exciting, with new faces and lots of energy on campus. It also marks the kickoff of our Alumni calendar of events. On August 19, De La Salle hosted both our annual alumni cross country run and our annual alumni water polo match. For the cross country program, former Spartan runners showed up early in the morning, ready to hit the trail at Heather Farm Park. More than 30 alumni, spanning five decades, ran the 2-mile course.. Alumni families, current parents, and friends enjoyed a hosted hospitality spread; and it was great to hear people sharing about their own De La Salle experience. Following the run, several alumni gathered for a hosted pizza reception to talk about all things De La Salle. That same afternoon, alumni took to the water at the Brother Jerome West Pool to take on the defending East Bay Athletic League (EBAL) and North Coast Section (NCS) champions. It was another epic battle but, this year, the current Spartans pulled out the victory. Afterward, a full squad of alumni, including spouses, children, and former parents, enjoyed pizza and refreshments on the pool deck, toured the campus, and regaled current students with stories about the hard work that is needed to build a top-ranked water polo and aquatics program. A special thank you to our current parents and coaches who helped host these community events during their already busy season. This was a great start to the alumni events calendar. Looking forward to this winter, the soccer program’s alumni day will be held on November 22, while basketball’s alumni event will take place on December 22. If you are interested in attending any future De La Salle alumni events, contact Tim Roberts ‘88, Director of Alumni Relations, at robertst@dlshs.org.

CLASS OF 2023

De La Salle Athletic

Hall Fame

Johnny De Los Reyes ’11 was a three-year varsity golfer at De La Salle, earning three 1st Team All-East Bay Athletic League (EBAL) honors. In 2009, he was named the Contra Costa Times Golfer of the Year. Following high school, Johnny went on to play golf for Saint Mary’s College where he finished his collegiate career with the lowest scoring average in the school’s history. During his time at Saint Mary’s, he led the Gaels to a West Coast Conference Championship in 2016. Johnny was also the WCC Player of the Year and team MVP in 2015 and was a three-time all-WCC selection. Today, he continues to compete around the country and internationally. Johnny holds the course record at Oakdale Country Club (62) and is currently teaching and coaching youth and adult golfers at Spring Creek Country Club in Ripon, CA. Lincoln Gunn ’06 was a two-year varsity basketball letterman and De La Salle’s basketball varsity team captain in 2006. Known for his attention to detail and work ethic, Lincoln broke the all-time scoring record at De La Salle and still holds the school record in free throw percentage in a single season. As a senior, Lincoln earned all-league, Contra Costa Times, and 1st Team all-state honors. He also led his team to a CIF State Championship and was named De La Salle Athlete of the Year in 2006. After De La Salle, Lincoln continued his academic and athletic career at Princeton University where he became a two-year starter for the Tigers. Lincoln has been a long-time supporter of De La Salle’s athletics programs and has been a resource for the school’s basketball staff. He currently resides in Oakland, CA with his wife and daughter and is the Vice President of Partnerships at Fandom, Inc. 2 7 | Union Magazine

Kristian Ipsen ’11 was a fouryear varsity diver and four-time NCS individual champion (2008-11) and still holds the NCS record for points. In 2010, Kristian was named De La Salle Athlete of the Year. He went on to compete at Stanford, where he won three NCAA championships and was an eight-time PAC-12 champion. A highly decorated junior diver, Kristian won 16 junior national championships, 15 senior national championships, two junior world championships, and two senior world silver medals. A member of the United States National Team, Kristian represented his country around the world in 2006, as well as from 2008 until 2016. He earned a silver medal in the 2009 World Championships, a bronze medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics (in the 3-meter Synchronized Diving event), and a bronze medal in the 2016 FINA World Aquatics Championships. Today, Kristian volunteers his time coaching diving at Southern Methodist University. He currently resides in Texas with his wife and is the Director of Business Development at Medallion. Mawuko Tugbenyoh ‘96 was a three-year varsity football player and an All-East Bay 1st Team selection in 1995. Known as one of the most dominant defensive players in school history, he also lent his skills to the track team, competing in relays. While at De La Salle, Mawuko led both his football and track teams to two NCS Championships. He earned a scholarship to Cal, where he went on to represent the Golden Bears for four seasons. After college, he played professionally in the NFL Europe from 2002 to 2003 and in the Canadian Football League from 2004 to 2005. Mawuko returned to De La Salle to coach football from 2010 to 2020, during which time he had a huge impact on young Spartans. Today, Mawuko is the Program Director at the Community Youth Center, a non-profit in Concord, CA, where after-school athletics and education programs are made available to children from all walks of life. He resides in Concord with his wife and children.

For most high schools across the country, fall marks football season and homecoming. For De La Salle High School, the homecoming game was held on September 29 and served as the backdrop to introduce six individuals and two teams from the school’s storied athletic program as part of De La Salle’s Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2023. The class of 2023 is the school’s 15th Hall of Fame class. This year’s roster includes legendary coaches Bob Ladouceur and Terry Eidson. You may ask, why did it take so long for Coach Lad to enter? The answer is simple, Bob didn’t want to be inducted until his “co-head coach,” Terry Eidson was also eligible for induction. So, on October 1, 12 years after coaching his last game, Coach Lad officially became part of the 2023 De La Salle Athletic Hall of Fame. Joining them were golfer Johnny De Los Reyes ’11, Olympic diver Kristian Ipsen ’11, basketball player Lincoln Gunn ’06, and linebacker Mawuko Tugbenyoh ’96. The 1996 Football Team and the 1998 Volleyball Team, were also part of this year’s Hall of Fame class.

Terry Eidson has worn many hats at De La Salle over the last 42 years. In addition to coaching football, baseball, and golf, Terry has been the Director of Student Activities, the Assistant Dean of Students, the head of the Religious Studies Department, and the Athletic Director. While he is mostly known for the football games that the school won along the way, Terry also coached countless Spartans in baseball and golf. His impact on high school athletics is so prolific he amassed awards like the Aflac Assistant Coach of the Year (2002), the NCS Athletic Director of the Year (2003), the De La Salle Coach of the Year (1984 and 1992), the NCS Honor Golf Coach (2019), and the CIF Coach of the Year (2020). He was also named the 2022 Distinguished Lasallian Educator of the Year by the District of San Francisco New Orleans. Over four decades, Terry has spearheaded several philanthropic initiatives at De La Salle, including 20 years with the school’s annual Toy Drive. Today, he works with students in De La Salle’s Bishop Cummins Scholarship Program, which is designed to support students and families from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds, including firstgeneration college-bound students.

Bob Ladouceur was one of the country’s most successful high school coaches and holds the record for the most victories in California history (399-25-3). Over 34 years, his teams won 28 NCS Championships and 19 State Championships, and had the longest consecutive gamewinning streak (151) in U.S. high school football history. Bob was named the National High School Coach of the Year by USA Today three times and became the NFL’s first Don Shula High School Coach of the Year recipient. In 2001, he was inducted into the NFHS Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2014, he was part of the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. In 2015, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Humane Letters from his alma mater, San Jose University, for distinguishing himself through humanitarian and philanthropic contributions to society. Bob’s coaching legacy can be seen across the high school football landscape. He has coached more than 80 athletes who received athletic scholarships at top universities and colleges across the country. Many continued on to professional careers in the NFL. He has also inspired countless alumni to become coaches and leaders themselves.

The 1996 Football Team was one of the most dominant teams in school history. Going undefeated and winning the NCS title was just the tip of the iceberg. This Spartan team shut out seven opponents, allowing an average of just 4.4 points a game. The team’s defense even outscored opposing offenses. One of the many highlights was defeating highly-ranked Rancho Buena Vista High School on De La Salle’s first trip to Southern California. The Spartans then defeated Pittsburg High School in the NCS 4A Championship game to cap off a perfect 12-0 season. Under the tutelage of new head coach, Tea Hieta, the 1998 Volleyball Team won the first of five straight NCS championships. They were known for camaraderie, competitiveness, and a willingness to sacrifice for the greater good. Captains Dominic Uchikura ‘98 and Stefan Yeoman ‘99 led their peers to be better people and teammates and helped set a positive culture. While it was a highly competitive season, all the pieces fell into place at the right time and they swept through the NCS Playoffs to win the championship match against Northgate. FALL 2023 | 28

SpartanSports The 2022-23 school year continued the Spartan tradition of excellence. In fact, it was one of the greatest years in athletic history for De La Salle. The school earned five league championships, 11 North Coast Section championships, three CIF NorCal Championships, and one CIF State Championship. Each varsity team had over a 3.0 team grade point average and 26 studentathletes signed National Letters of Intent (NLI). De La Salle also received the prestigious Cal-Hi Sports Boy’s State School of the Year award – for the second year in a row. We owe our studentathletes, coaches, teachers, and support staff a tremendous amount of gratitude for all the time and effort they put forth last year!

ANNUAL HONOR ROLL OF DONORS Fiscal Year 2022-23

The De La Salle Annual Fund is a fundraising priority of the school that complements our mission to serve all students, while also addressing yearly operational needs. It is vital to the financial health, growth, and future of the school and puts our students first. Through donations, we make tuition assistance possible for families with varying levels of need, provide tools and training for our faculty and staff, and facilitate a wide array of co-curricular programs so that all students have the opportunity for activity, leadership, and expression outside of the classroom. Thank you to all of our donors for putting our students first!

De La Salle Endowments and Named Funds

Endowments are the financial foundation of a school. Rather than used for immediate needs, endowed funds are invested. The earnings on these investments then provide a stable, ongoing source of funds for scholarships, operations, and other areas of campus life where there is a need. The goal of an endowment is to use enough earnings to accomplish the purpose for which the endowment was created, while retaining a portion to allow for growth and future use. Endowments and Named Funds are established with a minimum $50,000 gift. In Memoriam Patricia “Patti” Stauch (Aug.15, 1939 - Sept. 12, 2023)

On September 26, 2023, the Brother Celestine Cormier, FSC Theatre was filled with former students, as well as faculty and staff (past and present) who were there to pay their respects to Patricia “Patti” Stauch, who passed away on September 12. Patti, who was referred to as “the first lady of Company,” single-handedly launched De La Salle’s Theatre Company in 1973. Over the next four decades, she directed more than 110 plays and, in doing so, turned Company into a family. Those who attended her memorial conveyed how Patti “loved everyone and was always welcoming,” how her “inclusiveness and generosity of spirit were monumental on this campus for generations,” and how she “was a wonderful gift” to all the students and actors that she developed on Winton Drive. As one speaker put it, Patti contributed “a wonderful piece of history to this school that is unsurpassed.”

Steven Jacoby (Oct. 17, 1962 - Oct. 19, 2023)

On October 19, De La Salle received the sad news that Steve Jacoby had suddenly passed away. Steve was a longtime member of the De La Salle community, having served as the Defensive Line Coach for De La Salle’s football program since 2006. As co-founder and VP for Business Development and Partnerships at eTeam Sponsor, Inc., he was widely respected throughout the high school football community. Steve truly cared about everyone he came into contact with and had the innate ability to connect on a personal level. He had a kind heart and a jovial personality that you couldn’t help but be drawn to. Steve attended Santiago High School in Southern California and played football at Saint Mary’s College (SMC). He then worked for his alma mater for the next 20 years. He is survived by his daughters, Jenna and Kaylie.
