Greetings

It is an honor to serve as a member of the Spencer House Restoration Committee and as program chairperson along with the assistance of Brenda P. Augustus. My vision for this organization would be to continue to enhance the integrity and transparency of this committee’s operations, recommended improvements and developments, as well as strategies that will strengthen the organizational financial position, and further define guidance and processes towards these improvements through our annual fundraiser event.

The Restoration Committee consists of a few dedicated individuals and I encourage the organization to continue to serve as a beacon of light to help preserve the legacy of the Spencer House, located at 745 Veteran Parkway, Columbus, Georgia, 31901.

The work is not finished as we continue to solicit support from the community through fundraisers and other events conducted during the year(s) to achieve our goal.

Thank you for your help and support in the past and I hope that you will continue to do so in the future.

Respectfully,

Dr. Burma D.

Keynote Speaker

Cathy L. Cook, DDS, FICOI

As a dentist, I am enjoying my return to my hometown of Columbus, GA, where I have the privilege of serving the very community that helped shape me. It is truly an honor to provide gentle dental care that enhances oral health and transforms the smiles of my friends and neighbors. Being a dentist allows me to bring about positive changes in the lives of my patients, whether I am alleviating their pain, restoring their ability to chew comfortably, or improving the appearance of their smiles, the result is always greater health and happiness. I cannot imagine a more fulfilling profession.

I was inspired to pursue dentistry by my father, Dr. Henry L. Cook, Sr. Watching the impact he made on his patients and the meaningful relationships he built through his practice motivated me to follow in his footsteps. Today, I spend my days doing what I love most, caring for wonderful people in my community.

My academic journey began at Spelman College and Columbus State University, followed by my Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry. I furthered my training through an advanced education residency in general dentistry with the U.S. Army Dental Corps and continued with the AAID MAXI Course at the Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University. I am also a proud Fellow in Implant Dentistry. Continuing education is one of my passions, as it allows me to broaden my skills, stay at the forefront of evolving dental technologies, and ensure that I provide the best possible care to my patients. Through meetings, lectures, and hands-on demonstrations, I am able to learn from leading experts in oral healthcare, while also mentoring young people who aspire to join the profession.

My accomplishments include being recognized by the SaMarc Dream and Achieve Foundation as a 2016 Legend, receiving the 2016 Courier Community Service Award, and being honored with the 2015 Columbus Times Keeper of the Legacy Award. I have also served in numerous leadership roles, including Delegate positions with both the Georgia Dental Society and the National Dental Association, as well as serving on the NDA Board of Trustees. I was the first general dentist to serve on the NDA’s Inaugural President’s Symposium, acted as spokesperson for the NDA Pew Charitable Trust Foundation, and represented the Western District Georgia Dental Association at the ADA leadership conference in Washington, DC. In 2015, I was elected NDA Delegate of the Year, and from 2017 to 2021, I proudly served as the Local Campaign Chair for the United Negro College Fund.

I am an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association, the SaMarc Foundation Board of Advisors, the UNCF Columbus Campaign Steering Committee, the Columbus Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and the Midtown Inc. Board of Directors. I also serve as Chairman of the Advisory Board at Columbus Tech Dental Health.

Above all, family is my priority. Motherhood is my greatest joy, and I am the proud parent of Jasmine Kiara and Jordan Cook, as well as a loving grandmother to Caleb. Much of my free time is happily spent supporting my children and grandson in their many activities whether theater, soccer, basketball, or track and field. Outside of dentistry, nothing brings me greater joy than gathering with my loved ones to laugh, talk, and share life together.

THE STORY OF WILLIAM HENRY SPENCER AND

THE BIRTH OF THE SPENCER HOUSE

William Henry Spencer was born in Columbus on September 21, 1857. His father, Henry Spencer, was a blacksmith and his mother passed away when he was very young. He attended the schools Columbus afforded African Americans, which was up to the ninth grade at the time. After his graduation he applied for a teaching position. He was assigned to a school in Harris County. Mr. Spencer later returned to Columbus where he served the school system as a grade teacher. During his tenure, he became principal of the former Fifth Avenue School and the first Superintendent of Colored Schools. He was dedicated to promoting efforts to improve the curriculum for these schools for people of color in Columbus.

Due to segregation, African-American parents from Columbus had to send their children to Fort Valley, Tuskegee, or Atlanta for education beyond ninth grade. Mr. Spencer faced great opposition, although he died in 1925, his persistence triumphed five years later when Spencer High School was formerly dedicated on November 29, 1932.

The construction of the Spencer House began in June of 1912. It was built by Dudley Lumber Company of Columbus. Mr. Spencer moved his wife and five children from their previous home 515 4th Avenue to their new house in the fall of that same year. The home is a good example of an early 20th Century Classical Revival architecture and American Foursquare house type. The exterior classical elements include the Corinthian columns and dentil molding on the front porch. Inside, the millwork, especially the mantel pieces, showcases the classical style. It was also a custom designed home for his family. It has five bedrooms upstairs (one for each child) and two bedrooms downstairs. The home was given to Muscogee County School District in the late 1970’s by William Spencer’s remaining two daughters. The Golden Owlettes, Inc., a Spencer High Alumni Association (organized on September 9, 1972), purchased the home in 1978. The home was listed on the National Register that same year.

THE KEEPERS OF THE HOUSE

The Golden Owlettes are a non-profit organization from Spencer High School Alumni. They were chosen by the Spencer family to undertake the proud responsibilities of maintaining and sharing this important part of the history of Columbus, Georgia. The house was to be a living memorial and national shrine for Mr. William Henry Spencer. The Owlettes are the guardians responsible for preserving the residence, to allow children, the local community and tourists to learn about this site of educational achievement.

Through the years your generous contributions and efforts have helped us to maintain the upkeep of the house “Preserving A Legacy.” Today, the property has had the following restorations completed: upgraded the air conditioner and the heating systems, interior walls refinished, exterior refurbished/painted, replaced ornamental woodwork/ pillars, installed phone service and outdoor sprinkler system. A cleaning service was secured for the house and a door bell was also installed. This year, new wiring and installation was installed due to a squirrel problem.

The Legacy of the Spencer House should be preserved for generations to come. With the help of your contributions, the Owlettes can continue to restore this outstanding landmark that must never go away and never lose its status as a cornerstone for education.

The Golden Owlettes, Inc. was under the leadership and guidance of the late Catherine McBride, President. After Catherine’s untimely death, Eva Smith succeeded her and is presently serving as the President of the organization. The other dedicated officers are: Pauline I. Johnson, Vice-President, Cynthia Harmon, Treasurer, Marion Jones, Financial Secretary/Sergeant-At-Arms and Thelma Anderson, Chaplain. Members: Queen Rasheeda Ali, Edith Carter, Edith Coleman, Florene Dawkins, Evelyn Merritts, Cheryl Moring, Edith Spencer and Doris Turner.

Kenneth M. Henson, Jr. was born in Columbus, GA. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1971. He then attended Davidson College in North Carolina and graduated in 1975. After college, Ken went to law school at the University of Georgia and graduated in December 1977. He was blessed that he was able to finish his education with no debt and had a place to practice law with his dad starting in 1979. His initial legal career was a prosecutor with the State Court Solicitor’s Office. Ken has practiced law in Columbus since 1977. Since 2015, Ken has also renovated historic properties and developed new apartments in the Uptown area. He is married to Chris Henson and they have five children. Ken has donated, liberally, to the continual restoration and maintenance of the Historic Spencer House for several plus years.

Rev. Richard A. Jessie, FHC Executive Director of Restoration, is a 1979 Spencer High School graduate. He is a member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Columbus, GA. Rev. Jessie was instrumental in the restoration and preservation of the Historic Claflin School (the first school built in Columbus, GA for former slaves). Also, Rev. Jessie did some column repairs and carved all of the new spindle replacements at the Spencer House preserving its historic integrity. He loves traveling and taking good road trips. Rev. Jessie wants to start back playing ping pong and music. As a matter of fact, three years ago, he rejoined the Spencer High School marching band. One of his mantra is he can’t help but to “SANA- MI” which means, “see a need and meet it.”

Mirchelle Johnson is a 1962 graduate of Spencer High School and a 1966 graduate of Paine College, Augusta, GA. She was Top Sales Person at WOKS-WFXE Radio. Mirchelle was the first black and one of only five Sales People in the Columbus Market, who earned the Professional Certification Title CRMC (Certified Radio Marketing Consultant) given by the National Radio Advertising Bureau Inc. She, also, earned Top Sales Person at WTVM-TV 9. She was a volunteer member of A. J. McClung YMCA membership drive. She served 15 years at the River Center for the Performing Arts, and 9 years at the National Infantry Museum (NIM). Mirchelle retired from AFLAC Sales after a successful career. She is a 75 Year member of Holsey Chapel CME Church. Mirchelle has been a sustaining monetary supporter of the SHRC annually!

Bennie B. Newroth is a Retired Social Worker and Political Lobbyist. She is a 1962 graduate of Spencer High School. While at Spencer she was a member of the National Honor Society and a cheerleader. She was in the same homeroom for four years with Nathaniel Carter and they lived on the same street in East Highland. She is a graduate of North Carolina A & T State University and Columbia University. Bennie’s training and passion are social work and community involvement. Those activities lead to political activism and her last job Director of Government Relations for Columbus Regional. She views herself as an advocate for social change. Bennie was the co-chair of the SPLOST that provided for the new William H. Spencer High School. She has served as campaign manager for several of our local politicians. She is an active member of St. Mary’s Road United Methodist Church. Bennie is very interested in Black History and has authored two books dedicated to preserving our history. She is a proud mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Bennie served as the Green & Gold Luncheon Keynote Speaker in 2015. She is a loyal and devoted supporter of the SHRC.

Organization Of The Spencer House Restoration Committee

The Spencer House, located at 745 Veterans Parkway, had been in existence for years without restoration and maintenance. Although comments were made about the extremely poor condition of the property, no one stepped forward with a plan to restore it until Eva Harvey Smith ‘62 was determined that something had to be done. She in turn contacted fifteen (15) individuals, mostly Spencer Alumni and asked them to meet at the Veterans Parkway Burger King on Sunday, July 11, 2010, at 5:30 pm.

The purpose of the meeting was to plan and devise ways to restore the house, making it a functional part of the community. Those in attendance were: Thelma Anderson, Brenda Augustus, Kathy Branscomb, Claude Brownlee (deceased), Ann Davis, Lewis Dawson (deceased), Annette Flewellen, Charlie Fortson (deceased), Marian Hammons, Catherine McBride (deceased), Bennie Newroth, Calvin Perry, Horace Senior, Jessie Stanley,

Gloria Stroy (deceased), Gloria Weston-Smart and Eva Smith. The group formed what is now known as the Spencer House Restoration Committee (SHRC). A member of the Columbus Historic Foundation, Justin Krieg, was also invited and attended as a consultant.

Brenda Augustus served as the first chairperson, followed by Ann Davis. Other officers included Eva Smith, Co-Chair, Gloria Stroy, Secretary (deceased), Annette Flewellen, Treasurer, and Kathy Branscomb, Financial Secretary. Other members are: Marjorie Jackson, Richard Jesse, Josie Johnson, Pauline I. Johnson, Lillian Pat Jones, Willie Searcy and Burma Williams. The group welcomed two new members to our organization; they are Doris Turner and Gerald Turner.

Queen Rasheeda Ali served as the Chairperson and Dr. Burma Williams Co-Chair of the SHRC 2024. Kudos to both; job well done.

The Spencer House stands as a legacy to the life of William H. Spencer and our efforts of hard work toward making it all happen through fundraising, community support and love.

However, our work is not finished as we continue to solicit your support as we tackle the interior/exterior for the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the house.
