Reflections of A Beautiful Life

Emily Louise Johnson Walker, 90, was born on June 8, 1934 in Columbus, Georgia to the late Samuel Johnson and Veola Hill Johnson. She transitioned peacefully on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at Orchardview Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center. As we remember Emily, we celebrate the legacy of love and inspiration she leaves behind.

Emily was married for over 20 years to her beloved husband, the late Charlie Lee Walker. Together, they raised their cherished son, Kenny, who was the center of their world.

At an early age, Emily confessed her faith in Christ and joined a local church, laying the foundation for a life dedicated to spiritual service. On April 14, 1991, she became a member of St. Mary’s Road United Methodist Church, where she served faithfully for 33 years until her health began to decline. Emily took great pride in her role as the leader of the R.O.C.K. (Relying on Christ’s Kingdom) Ministry, where she nurtured the spiritual growth of her congregation and fostered a sense of community. Additionally, she was actively involved in numerous church committees, lending her talents and passion to various initiatives.

Emily, a beloved educator, passed away leaving behind a profound legacy in the Muscogee County School District. A proud graduate of William H. Spencer High School in 1951, she earned her Bachelor of Education from Clark Atlanta University in 1955. Over her remarkable 40-year career, Emily dedicated herself to teaching English and Math at various schools, including Carver Elementary and St. Mary’s Elementary. Her passion for education and her unwavering support touched the lives of countless students, who would often greet her warmly in the community. Emily’s influence will be felt for generations, as she inspired a love of learning and a sense of belonging in all who had the privilege to know her.

Emily was also a proud Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, having been initiated in the Sigma Chapter at Clark Atlanta University in 1952. Her commitment to the principles of the sorority—Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service—shone brightly throughout her life, as she dedicated herself to its mission for 72 years. Emily served in numerous leadership roles within the Columbus (GA) Alumnae Chapter, including Past President and Treasurer. Through her unwavering dedication and tireless efforts, Emily helped to uplift and empower those around her, inspiring new generations of leaders within the sorority.

Emily was a proud charter member of The Modernistics Social & Civic Club, founded in 1966 and a valued member of the Pleasure Seekers Club. She loved cooking and often shared her delicious meals with friends and family. Her hobbies also included traveling, playing card games, and solving intricate puzzles.

In addition to her parents, Emily is preceded in death by her aunt, Louise Hill; her husband, Charlie Lee Walker; her brother, Theodore Johnson; and son, Kenneth B. (Kenny) Walker.

She is survived by her beloved granddaughter, Kayla Brianna Walker, her pride and joy; her devoted daughter-in-law, Cheryl Nelson Walker; her cousins, Doris Upshaw and Pam Florence; her sisters-in-law, Bertha Sue Johnson and Gloria Clark; goddaughters, Vickie McCall, Mirchelle Plummer, and Pandora Lloyd; her college roommate, Richard Dean Covington; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who cherished her deeply.
