With vaccines coming under scrutiny of late, the American Medical Association (AMA) and 79 other medical organizations have released an open letter to the nation in support of vaccination for respiratory illnesses.

The June 25 letter stresses the importance of vaccines in combating influenza, RSV, and COVID-19.

The letter opened: “With the severe influenza season the U.S. experienced during the 2024–2025 respiratory virus season, and the recognition that we will likely see another surge in respiratory viruses this fall, we know strong physician leadership is essential to reducing preventable illness, hospitalizations, and death. Vaccines for influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 remain

“The Hall of Excellence is more than a museum, it is a movement,” said Gray at the grand opening ceremony. “They’re living reminders of what it means to sacrifice, to strive, to overcome. May this hall remind us of where we’ve been, challenge us on where we’re going, and always call on us to live, to strive, to commit to excellence.”

Other notable pieces in the Hall of Excellence include the boxing gloves Muhammad Ali wore during his 1966 fight against George Chuvalo, a jersey and opening ceremony uniform for the 1992 United States Men’s Olympic basketball team (nicknamed the “Dream Team”), Clint Eastwood’s

Over three decades, her strategic insight and industry expertise helped attract major events, boost visitor spending, and strengthen Dayton’s identity as a tourism and business destination, the organization noted.

HOTS Bear of a Smile… An Alaskan brown bear named Tundra is the proud owner of a shiny new tooth after the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth, Minnesota, performed a first-of-its-kind (for a bear, anyway) dental surgery on June 23, the Associated Press reports. The surgery resulted in Tundra walking away with the largest dental crown—a shiny silver one at that—ever created, according to the zoo. “He’s got a little glint in his smile now,” said Caroline Routley, the zoo’s marketing manager. The procedure was performed by Dr. Grace Brown, the same board-certified veterinary dentist who helped perform a root canal on the same tooth that

Waldorf Astoria NYC to Open in September

Following several delays, the Waldorf Astoria New York in New York City is expected to open this September, according to Hilton Hotel’s landing page for the property.

The flagship Waldorf Astoria’s grand reopening has been delayed four times—once in 2021, 2023 and again last year. Most recently, Hilton expected to open the Waldorf Astoria this spring.

The hotel first closed in 2017 to begin the massive, property-wide transformation and $2 billion upgrade.

In a February interview with the New York Post, sources from the hotel’s construction team suggested the Waldorf Astoria may not be ready to welcome guests until October.

According to anonymous sources who spoke to the Post, “Hilton suits were ‘privately fuming’ over repeated delays” to reopening the property.

The building itself was sold by Hilton to Anbang Insurance Group, a Chinese company, for $1.95 billion in 2015.

The renovation was initiated in part to convert half of the hotel’s 1,400 guest rooms and suites into branded residences and luxury condominiums,

and the remaining spaces into 375 guest rooms that would be expanded into the largest hotel rooms in the city, the Post reports.

While the hotel is taking reservations for September, Hilton’s website indicates the residences will not be open and available at the same time.

Philadelphia Named Most Walkable City to Visit

For the third consecutive year, Philadelphia has once again been named the Most Walkable City to Visit in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

A panel of experts selected 20 U.S. cities based on pedestrian accessibility, proximity of hotels and attractions, and overall ease of exploration. Philadelphia ultimately earned the top ranking through public voting,

“Earning this title for the third consecutive year affirms what we’ve always known: Philadelphia is a city best experienced on foot,” said Angela Val, President & CEO of Visit Philadelphia.

“It’s a reflection of how seamlessly our neighborhoods, culture and sense of community connect across the city. That ease of exploration helps visitors feel a deeper connection, and inspires them to return again and again.”

The Center City Philadelphia corridor spans from the Delaware River on the east to the Schuylkill River on

the west. Visitors can walk from one end of Center City to the other in just 50 minutes.

“We’re thrilled that Philadelphia has been named the most walkable city in the U.S. for the third year in a row,” said Gregg Caren, President & CEO of the Philadelphia CVB. “Walkability is one of our greatest strengths, especially for international travelers and meeting attendees who want to maximize their time exploring the city. With world-class hotels, historic sites, diverse dining, and the Pennsylvania Convention Center all within a compact, accessible footprint, Philadelphia delivers an experience that’s easy to navigate and hard to forget.”

The iconic and storied Phoenix Hotel in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood will officially close its doors on January 1, 2026, according to several reports.

According to the 44-room property’s owner and hotelier Chris Conley, the closure is due to financial reasons. Conley and his team decided not to renew the property’s lease.

In the months leading up to its closure, Conley told SFGate the hotel will celebrate its legacy with events and celebrations.

“Since COVID, The Phoenix and its neighborhood have struggled mightily, so as we near the end of our long-term land lease, it seems fitting that this gateway to the Tenderloin should go out with a flurry of parties during the balance of 2025,” Conley said.

Throughout its almost 40 years, the Phoenix has hosted notable rock and roll musicians, including David Bowie, Pearl Jam, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Nirvana,

“The Phoenix Hotel and the Tenderloin are synonymous,” said Isabel Manchester, the hotel’s managing partner, in an interview with SFGate. “They belong together. It’s a rock and roll hotel in the heart of the city surrounded by all the music venues, and that’s exactly where it belongs.”

Conley began his venture as a hotelier when he purchased the Phoenix Hotel site and revamped it in 1989, marking the beginning of his Joie de Vivre brand, which he eventually sold the management of to Hyatt’s JdV by Hyatt collection of independent hotels in 2010.

“I feel deeply grateful that this no-tell motel is where I started my hotel career that led to Joie de Vivre creating and managing 52 boutique hotels over my 24 years running the company,” Conley said.

According to reports, no future plans have been confirmed for the site, but the San Francisco Baking Institute bought the property for $9.1 million in late 2024.

Michael Fisher of Update Management Dies

Michael “Mike” Fisher, who founded and ran association management company Update Management, Inc. (UMI), in Tigard, Oregon, passed away on June 12 due to complications from leukemia. He was 80.

Fisher founded UMI in 1983 and piloted the firm for 35 years. UMI managed upward of 20 associations and various nonprofits, an obituary in the Oregonian noted. The firm is affiliated with ASAE and MPI.

Geoff Horning is President of UMI, having purchased the firm in 2018. He got to know Fisher as a client during time on the Oregon Society of Association Management Board of Directors. He later served as president of the organization.

Horning told USAE Fisher was “genuine, caring and supportive.”

“COVID had a huge impact on trade associations, and in particular association management companies,” Horning said. “Though he was out of the business, we had regular phone calls to discuss the trials and tubulations of the time. Without his wisdom and support, I’m not sure Update Management would have survived the upheaval that the pandemic caused our company. Today, we’re thriving and reaching new heights, that would not have been possible without those words of encouragement. He will be greatly missed.”

Jim Fricke, Executive Director of the Colorado Garden Foundation, worked with UMI for decades in facilitating the National Association of Consumer Shows (NACS).

“Mike Fisher was instrumental in the creation of the National Association of Consumer Shows, and was very

active and involved for all of the years that his company managed that association,” Fricke said. “Mike, as a person, was amazing and great to work with. I enjoyed all of my time with him. His professionalism was beyond compare. He will be missed by everyone in the consumer show industry who had any dealings with him whatsoever because he was just an amazing person to be able to spend time with and was a great advocate for consumer shows.”

Born on October 8, 1944, Fisher was lifelong Gresham, Oregon resident. An Oregon State University graduate and Beavers fan, he was an avid golfer and served in a variety of volunteer roles with the Rose Festival Association, Holy Family Catholic Church and other organizations, his obituary stated.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra,

two children and multiple grandchildren.

Visit Prince George’s County Discover Prince George’s, Maryland, where historic charm meets modern

vibrancy. Explore over 850,000 sq ft of meeting space, including two Four-Diamond hotels. Conveniently located near Washington, D.C., the county offers rich history, outdoor adventures, and extensive amenities, making it an ideal destination for memorable events and conventions.

The Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center on the Potomac River is just eight miles from Washington, D.C. and a major meeting destination. Gaylord National is National Harbor’s centerpiece, but now it’s joined by some lively neighbors: five hotels, including a casino resort; a dozen blocks of restaurants and shops; and boat cruises, a 175-foot Ferris wheel and other amusements.

Gaylord National’s 1,996 guest rooms and more than half a million square feet of meeting space make it the largest non-casino resort along the East Coast, and its 178,787 square feet of exhibit space is the largest of any D.C. metro hotel. Other National Harbor hotels, including the Westin and the AC Hotel, have meeting spaces as well. The MGM National Harbor, a mile from National Harbor’s downtown, has 35,000 square feet of meeting space.

But even with all the development, the Potomac remains much of the focus in National Harbor. The river is the view from the Gaylord’s 1.5-acre atrium. Many of its meeting spaces and its rooftop bar also offer water views. A riverfront promenade invites strolls; paddleboats, water taxis and tour boats get visitors out on the water. And restaurants are a marvelous mix--everything from Maryland crabs and milkshakes to hot chicken and tikka masala.
