Foothills Golf Course is one of the Denver Metro Area’s most popular public courses. However, the original clubhouse, built in 1974, was no longer serving the needs of daily golfers and the nearby community. In turn, the Park & Recreation team sought a new design with an expanded restaurant and terrace (including an indoor-outdoor bar), events space to accommodate various tournaments, and storage for a new fleet of golf carts.

Colorado Golf Expo: Exciting New Additions and Special Guest Ryan French!

The Colorado Golf Expo, presented by BMW Championship, will be held Friday through Sunday, February 16-18, at the Colorado Convention Center, Hall C. Kevin Morton, Owner of the Colorado Golf Expo, says “This year’s Expo is better than ever with exciting new features for golf enthusiasts and professionals alike.” Highlighted this year is a 90-foot-long putt challenge, where participants of all skill levels can compete for prizes. With over a hundred exhibitors, this celebration of golf offers attendees opportunities to discover the latest products and services in the golf industry, from equipment and apparel to training and technology. Key partners include Lenny’s Golf, PGA-Colorado Section, Colorado Golf Association, and over a dozen manufacturers. “To add to the excitement,” says Kevin, “we are proud to announce that Ryan French will speak on the PGA Seminar Stage.” Ryan, founder of Monday Q, a golf media company with over 41 million monthly views, will share insights on upand-coming pros and underdogs, as well as relate Cinderella stories. Since it is important to give back to the community, the Colorado Golf Expo will partner with Ryan French and donate golf clubs to a local high school golf team in need of equipment. This contribution will be presented by legendary sports broadcaster Vic Lombardi on Saturday the 17th at 11:00 a.m. “Plus,” continues Kevin, “this year’s Expo will feature performances by rock/country musician Kimberley Dahme.” Kimberley is a singer-songwriter best

known as a former member of Boston, a rock band. Since there will be live music throughout the event, attendees can enjoy a variety of musical genres while exploring the exhibit hall and networking with other golf enthusiasts.

Advantages Vs. Disadvantages of Living On a Golf Course By Doug Phelps DIVOT Contributing Writer Colorado golf course communities regularly make Top 10 lists for the most desirable properties for homeowners in America. Let's take a realistic look at both sides to determine if living on a golf course is right for you:

Advantages There are many great advantages to living on a golf course. Golf course living offers a lifestyle that isn’t found anywhere else, and it could be a perfect fit for your lifestyle: Recreation at Your Fingertips Every course offering is different, but many offer benefits like clubhouses, saunas, gyms, swimming pools, tennis courts and regular community social events. Plus, you can often go tee off at just about any time you choose. Improve Your Game Living on a golf course means that you can play any time you want and improve your game. Professionals recommend that a beginner golfer play at least twice a week to see improvement in their game.

Stay Active In the Denver Metro Area, many courses offer nearby access to trails for hiking, mountain biking, climbing, running, birdwatching and picnics. Sometimes, communities have complimentary membership agreements with other facilities, as a bonus. Safe Community Living Some golf communities have gate guards and surveillance equipment. This will give you peace of mind and assurance that you and your property are well looked after. Network and Make New Friends Many golfers prefer, and tend to spend time, with other golfers because they enjoy the same passion for the game. These golf communities will provide grounds for sociable living and endless fun. Learning Young Golf isn’t just for retirees. Some kids start playing at five, or younger, and golf is a great way for kids to stay physically active and it will also stimulate mental and disciplinary growth. Growing and Maintaining Property Value Golf courses are immaculate because the

staff spends a lot of time and money maintaining their standards. Beautiful courses help resell value and curb appeal. This, plus the amenities provided, will help keep property values high.

Disadvantages Golf course living comes with endless benefits but it’s also important to be realistic about potential disadvantages of being part of a golf course community. Knowing about these issues in advance helps you decide if it’s a good community choice for you: Noise Maintenance, like mowing or sprinklers, is an inevitable part of golf course living. You might also hear golf carts and groups of golfers walking past and chattering loudly. However, noise issues could exist in any neighborhood. Those Pesky Wandering Balls Your home can be struck with unruly golf balls which can result in damage like battered deck chairs or broken windows. Some HOAs will require special coverage for homeowners on a golf course. Deductibles for this insurance can range from $200 to $1,000 and your agent can help

pick the right coverage for you without breaking the bank. Living in Privacy Depending on where your home is located on the course, golfing groups may be walking past your home and looking in which can be bothersome to some owners. However, some homeowners may enjoy socializing with other golfers and watching their games. Homeowners Association and Restrictions An HOA often governs golf course homes with regulations that are bound by firm protocols. Be aware of these rules and read the fine print. However, this is a reality, and it is always wise to do discovery of any HOA community. What do you think it is? Fitted clubs? More lessons? A membership to a golf club? What about more time to practice? As all these things can be a correct answer depending on what your game needs, the one thing you DO need is a body that works to the best of its ability. One thing we learn as TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) certified professionals is, “…we don’t believe there is one way to swing a golf club, we believe there’s a million ways and it’s based off what your body can do.” What does that mean for your game? It means that you need to work just as hard on helping your body move it’s best as you do on practicing and playing the game! Because what your body can’t do well, tightness, inflexibility, joint restriction, pain, etc., will contribute to your ability to perform a swing and it will show itself in the form of swing faults. Here's the bad news about that. The more

you practice and play with movement discrepancies that more you ingrain bad patterns in your swing and game. SOOO, if you really want to make permanent change for your game in 2024, now is the perfect time to get assessed, find your body movement issues and get a plan to begin the process of becoming a better athlete! If I do that Dee, what will happen? Good question! You will experience an improved ability to move, to stabilize yourself in your game. You’ll have better posture and better ability to rotate in the backswing and downswing. You will hit it farther, become more accurate, lower your handicap AND enjoy the benefits of getting in the gym- weight loss, increased energy, strength, endurance and one of the most important things in golf, injury resistance. For more information please visit www.coloradogolffitnessclub.com Dee has been a certified TPI fitness pro for almost twenty years, is a Golf Digest Top 50 Golf Fitness Instructor, helping golfers hit it further, lower their handicap, and maximize the athletic golfer within them. Is A New Putter That Much Better? By Jerry Walters DIVOT Contributing Writer

Did you get a new putter for Christmas? Good for you! Did you get a gift card to pick one out? Double good for you! Many of those precious flat sticks are truly gorgeous from the paint fill to the red dots to the headcover. They all claim to be better than the array of others. They’re incredibly striking and attractive until you look at the price tag. HOLY UNDERWEAR! Some of them are a house payment! You may have to consider taking out a 2nd mortgage to afford one. OUCH!

clubs in two different lengths. That’s like purchasing a one size fits all 3 piece suit. People are various heights and their putting set-up can be very dissimilar. Having a putter extended or cut down to the proper length is merely the first step and could immediately improve the lie angle. 2 Lie Value- This can be adjusted if your putter fitter has a Loft and Lie machine. You should want the putter to sit flat in the middle of the sole. Putter heads are cambered or rounded so the toe or heel of the putter head doesn’t drag on the green. Refer to step #1. By getting the proper length putter the lie value could change.

Instead of coveting a new putter, consider this. All putters can easily be adjusted to fit you and your stroke properly. That includes the putter you already own. The three values to consider are:

3 Loft Value- Here’s the one that many people disregard because no one has ever explained the perils of having too much or too little loft. It’s all about effective loft at impact. Too much loft will launch the ball above the grass surface. While airborne, there is no resistance which would allow the ball to twist, skid, backspin or jump offline. Without the opportunity to see this firsthand makes it hard to understand. Having the equipment to see the actions of the ball upon impact is crucial to putter fitting.

1 Length- Putter manufacturers generally shaft their new

As I tell my students; there is no correlation between the amount of money you spend on a putter and the amount of putts you’ll make. I can miss putts with a $25 putter. If you don’t believe me, I’ll show you.

all need to be put in time out occasionally) in the lineup, you could save yourself that money, which could equal a car payment, and have your existing putter fit to you. Less money spent and more putts made. If you do purchase one of those glamorous new putters, don’t fall victim to leaving the collectible headcover on the unattended putter. Take a look on eBay for “used putters.” There are loads of the popular high-priced putters listed, but not because the seller grew weary of them. The head covers become neon lights to an opportunistic thief. Dress your sparkling new putter with an old headcover or sock. Destination unknown... The sun rises on a new golf season in Colorado!

With a few days of pre-holiday rounds of golf played in December 2023, Fossil Trace Golf Club wrapped up its 20th season of golf. For 2024 and beyond, the golf course continues to offer something for everyone that either lives in or travels to the historic city of Golden. The golf course is one of the many options in this region for award-winning local recreation, a mix of western roots, mining spirit and prehistoric remnants. It is those remnants of plant and animal life that inhabited this area 65 million year ago that gave them the namesake. The famed triceratops footprint, which was discovered up the path from the 12th green was moved recently to the Golden History Museum, where it is now on display for visitors and safe from the weather elements. Teri, a replica triceratops skull which can be viewed inside the Clubhouse, was the inspiration for the club’s popular new alternate logo introduced as part of the 20 year celebration. Fossil Trace is situated at the base of the foothills of the Front Range, surrounded by Lookout Mountain to the west, and Table Mountain to the north. Built on the unique topography of the Foothills, Jim Engh’s clear design intentions were to inspire the 24

imagination, and encourage players to have fun in a soulful and vibrant atmosphere. The course features a variety of amenities including an award-winning Golf Shop and restaurant, Footprints at Fossil Trace. In 2023, Fossil Trace was featured by a prominent national golf publication as one of the “Most Fun Golf Courses in America,” highlighting the golf course layout alongside the preservation of natural features and materials like clay, and brick. The clay featured throughout the back 9 draws inspiration from the natural beauty and history of the site. The often photographed chimney in the lower fairway of #1 is scheduled for renovation in early 2024. Many Denver-area and mountain golf courses are now top destinations for those traveling to Colorado. Groups of players are setting their sights on Denver, and making travel plans and tee times further in advance than ever before. Golf in Colorado is set against a backdrop not easily found anywhere else in the world. A Colorado golf trip offers a rotation of great courses that rival many of the countries’ best golf destinations. Attracting players from around the world is rewarding, but Fossil Trace is

more than a destination golf course. The professional staff at Fossil Trace embrace the opportunity to provide a destination golf experience and serve the local golf community. Beyond a round of golf, Fossil Trace offers golf programs and league play for new and recreational players. The goal of these programs is to create lifetime golfers, and make the golf course a center for community and family engagement. Player development programs include Operation 36 for juniors and adults, PGA Junior League, Learn to Play Junior Camps, and Ready for Golf Adult Leagues,

both 6 and 9 holes. Golf can and should be whatever you want it to be. For more information about the Golden History Museum, visit goldenhistory.org. Online tee times at Fossil Trace Golf can be booked for all of the 2024 in-season tee times between April 22nd and November 4th. Fossil Trace offers player development programs for juniors and adult golfers beginning in early Spring, through mid-October. For tee times, or more information about junior and adult learning opportunities, visit the website at fossiltrace.com. D

Fifteen Golf Challenges For You To Try In 2024 By Kieran Clark DIVOT Contributing Writer The Christmas tree is little more than a distant memory, the chime of the New Year bells faded long ago, all of which means that we have now embraced 2024 and both the challenges and opportunities that it will bring. For golfers, the beginning of each season can be an effective reset button, where you establish goals for the months to come alongside hopes and dreams for what you can derive from the game. Many of you are likely working away at the range or keeping yourself ticking over with routine winter rounds, but once springtime makes a welcome appearance, the excitement will be palpable. But what should you desire to achieve this year? Here’s a few objectives for you to give a try - some of which are more testing than others, but I’m pretty sure that conquering a few of them would qualify the 2024 golf season as being a resounding success.

you played last year, make sure you get out there for at least one more this season. Some golf fanatics are already pushing the limits of what's possible, but for those of us who don't get out there often enough - make 2024 the year when you do fulfil that dream!

Shoot Your Lowest Ever Score Thousands of you keep track of your score, but what is your lowest ever score? Whatever that may be, try and better it this year. I know realize this sounds like an obvious golf goal, but really attempt tomake this your year to post your lowest score ever!

Improve Your Stats If you are one to keep a record of your statistics round-by-round, season-by-season. Take a look at them - set a few benchmarks - and aim to improve on them this year. Whether you want to enhance a strength or defeat a weakness, hit more fairways and greens and hole more putts!

Play More Rounds Than 2023

Play Without Losing a Ball

This is (hopefully) the simplest one to have on your list. However many rounds

We naturally enjoy stats, but this is always a useful barometer to ensure that

you're not making catastrophic errors on the golf course. Have a new box of Titleist Pro V1s or Callaway Chrome Softs? Let's see how many rounds you can get by without losing one! If you manage to get through multiple days, then we reckon that is probably a sign that you've played solid, consistent golf.

Play 18 Holes Without a Three-Putt Arguably the most frustrating way to lose strokes is on the greens, especially when you three-putt from a relatively modest distance. Work on your pace control and line reading and set yourself a target of getting through your round with no worse than a two-putt. If you manage to accomplish that, then you'll save yourself plenty of squandered shots on the card!

Take on a Longest Day Challenge Looking forward to June, the longest day of this year will technically be on the 20th of that month, but anything in the vicinity is relevant for this discussion. You often see golfers taking on challenges to play 72 holes a day - regularly for charity - but how bout you have a go at one yourself. Play at your pace, even if it's just two rounds, and make the absolute most of the long summer daylight!

All golfers love to improve. The acid test is whether your handicap is lower than it was at the beginning of the season. Become more consistent, shoot better rounds, and maybe even finally accomplish that one-established handicap goal. If you've always wanted to reach single figures - then make this the year!

Play With Only a Handful of Clubs Likewise, another thing worth trying is playing with a reduced number of clubs. This could be in competition, a fun match with friends, or even just on your own. Using fewer clubs will enhance your imagination and shot-making skills. Channel your inner-Lee Trevino or Seve Ballesteros and just see what happens!

Play at Dawn & Dusk

How many different golf courses did you play in 2023? Whatever the number, endeavor to play more! You could return to old favorites or even - most excitingly - check off some new ones.

Get a Golf Lesson

Expand Your Golf Social Circle

Perhaps you're struggling with a common fault, are desperate to improve, or maybe even fancy a check-up to make sure you are maintaining solid fundamentals. Golf lessons with a registered professional are invaluable and we recommend that you book at least one this year!

One of the great appeals of golf is the social side, with the game bringing different kinds of people together by a shared passion. You can make friends for life on the course, so why not endeavor to meet a new one this year, expanding your circle of golfing acquaintances and making your time playing even more rewarding.

Be Fitted For New Golf Clubs Have you thought about buying yourself a new set of golf clubs? Then why not put yourself through a proper custom fitting session! It's the only way to get your hands on equipment that is guaranteed to be most suited to your technique.

Attend an Elite Tournament Playing golf is the pinnacle, but watching the best in the world compete can also be inspiring. Maybe you're a regular at tournaments or haven't been to any, why not add one to your diary this year. Some of you may have tickets to DIVOTMagazine.com l Colorado Golf Expo Issue 2024

Reduce Your Handicap

If you're someone who routinely plays during the late morning or early afternoon, you're missing out on the delights available at both extremities of daytime. Why not book the earliest tee time one day and sweep the dew with the course laid out empty before you, or chase the sun for a twilight round in the evening. Either way, you'll get to sample what photographers refer to as 'golden hour' when the light is at its most majestic.

Play More Courses This Year

The Open at Royal Troon, or maybe the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia has always been on your list. What ever the event may be, try to make this the year you really do it!

Have Fun Ultimately, the most basic objective for the year is simply to enjoy the game. Have fun out there. It sound so simple but we all know just how challenging having fun can sometimes be. This year, really make an effort to make the most of your time on the golf course and relish the company of others you share it with. That's an achievement we should all look to master, not only throughout the 2024 season but for as long as we are able to play this amazing game. D

Swing-Smart, Play Pain-Free: Tackle Back Pain with Shockwave Therapy By Kathleen Heiney DIVOT Contributing Writer How often have you finished a round of golf with a sore back? Only to go home and not address the injury or understand what caused the pain? When and why do injuries occur? As a beginner or novice golfer injury may set in at any time due to improper form or technique. Middle Aged golfers (30-50) generally experience overuse injuries, due to playing too often or evening practicing the wrong technique or swing mechanics. Playing golf does not come without risk of injury. As a Class LPGA Teaching professional, athlete, and player for over 35 years, I have experienced many aches and pains that I wasn’t sure how to treat. In fact, over 30% of professional players and over 40% of amateurs deal with injuries and chronic pain annually. Golf is an endurance sport that takes an incredible amount of mental and physical stamina. Do you feel like you need to take some type of pain medication before every round? Do you panic if you don’t have it in your bag? When you are dealing with any kind of pain, it is not only physically taxing but mentally as well. When this happens it ultimately hinders your performance, and you no longer enjoy playing. Over the years of playing golf and teaching, I have come across so many students and players that complain of chronic back pain. When assessing most it is due to overuse and repetitive motions of the set-up and the actual swing itself. Are you the player that feels the need to take something before each round, just in case? Have you tried

all the traditional modalities like P.T., massage, acupuncture, chiropractic and steroid injections only to find temporary relief? With any type of injury, it is always best to get a proper

diagnosis. Once you have that you can put a plan in place to start the healing process. A new clinical treatment in the modern world of tissue healing and regeneration is called Shockwave Therapy. A vast number of professional and amateur golfers across the globe are discovering the benefits of Shockwave Therapy and seeing what a game changer it is. What is Shockwave Therapy? Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a cutting edge, non-invasive, medical treatment that harnesses the power of acoustic waves to accelerate your body’s natural healing process. It involves applying high energy acoustic waves to the targeted area of pain, stimulates blood flow, reduces inflammation, and enhances the body’s natural healing process. What is great about shockwave therapy is it is a 15–20-minute session that can aid in not only soft tissue regeneration but osteoarthritis as well. If you are seeking a non-invasive treatment, that facilitates faster recovery, reduces chronic pain, and improves mobility for your swing, then Shockwave Therapy is the game changer you have been looking for!
