Sustainability in Action at Pueblo Bonito Resorts & Quivira Los Cabos

Ernesto Coppel, founder of Pueblo Bonito Resorts, got his start as a hotel developer in Mazatlan in 1987, but his name was made in Los Cabos four years later. That’s when the company’s first resort in Cabo San Lucas opened, providing Pueblo Bonito an ideal front-and-center stage on beautiful Médano Beach. The Mediterranean-style hotel’s suites and restaurants were oriented to the distinctive rock formations at Land’s End, including El Arco (The Arch), Cabo’s iconic natural wonder.

From the beginning, Coppel embraced social and environmental responsibility long before they became buzz words.

“When we started to develop in Los Cabos (in the late 1980s), with every new development we enhanced our commitment to the environment,” Coppel stated. “Sustainability is a core value at Pueblo Bonito Resorts and Quivira Los Cabos. “We believe it is critical to nurture the local environment, reinvest in the community, and reduce the impact of development.”

Coppel is especially proud of the fact that the Jack Nicklaus-designed course at Quivira Golf Club, an engineering marvel and aesthetic tour de force grafted onto a stunning site at Land’s End, is surfaced from tee to green in paspalum, a salt-tolerant, disease-resistant grass varietal that uses a fraction of the chemicals and pesticides required by other grasses. For good measure, the entire course is irrigated with recycled water generated by two wastewater treatment plants attached to the hotels and residential communities. Treated water is also used to irrigate vegetation areas throughout the development, creating a more sustainable community.

Quivira Los Cabos has become a singular role model in sustainable water use. Water is an especially precious re-

source in Los Cabos, which is situated in a subtropical desert that receives a scant 8 to 10 inches of rainfall per year. Consequently, Quivira was conceived and designed to ensure that all residents and guests have access to water while preserving the municipality’s water sources by not depending on its supply.

The community’s desalination plants are a prime example of advanced technology, converting seawater into safe drinking water, producing 4.65 million liters daily. Moreover, a sustainability committee at Quivira has recently implemented additional eco-friendly actions and practices, including recycling programs at the Montecristo resort complex and the Coronado residential community.

Crucial ecological efforts, notably a turtle protection

and release program, have been ongoing for more than 20 years. From mid-July through mid-December, guests of Pueblo Bonito Resorts and residents of Quivira Los Cabos can engage in active conservation by releasing turtle hatchlings from their protected nests into the sea, greatly increasing their chances of survival.

One of the newest additions at Quivira Los Cabos is Amakiri Botanical Garden. Here, resort guests and residents can learn about the endemic plant species of Baja California Sur, a vast swath of desert bisected by a mountain range and flanked by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Sea of Cortez to the east. The garden’s array of walking paths lead nature lovers among roughly 200 different plant species, many of them native to the Baja and a few of them endangered.

Finally, it’s been said that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. For its part, Pueblo Bonito Resorts has raised its recycling efforts to a fine art. Resort guests drain and recycle bottles by the thousands. The nearby San Miguel Blown Glass Factory collects up to two tons of empties from the hotels each month. The glass is cleaned, melted and transformed it into colorful hearts and other figurines that have become iconic symbols of love and friendship in Los Cabos and throughout Mexico.

In a perfect circle of sustainability, Pueblo Bonito not only supplies the raw material for the glass pieces, but the resort company buys back the creations to display around its hotels and communities. These items are also for sale in the resorts’ gift shops. This unique recycling initiative sends a message to eco-conscious travelers who prize sustainability efforts--and who want to see local communities benefit from their visits. D

Long Distance Call

I ask this question of my students al most every lesson; “what’s more impor tant in putting, speed or line”? I can see the smoke starting to pour out of their collective ears as they search for the cor rect response. In a group setting, I’ll re ceive every answer imaginable, but finally someone will blurt out the one that makes the most sense. It DE PENDS! That’s what I’m looking for.

For every 3’-5’ putt I face during my round “the line” seems to be my focus as I have the speed figured out. But, the far ther I am from my target, the more “speed” becomes the predominant fac tor. The simplest way to lower your scores is to become more proficient at speed control. Now, I agree with what you’re thinking; it’s not very exciting to hit long putts over and over. We all want to see putts go into the cup. However, hitting long putts close enough to con vert the second putt will produce grati fying results.

Here’s a quick drill that doesn’t re quire much time or space that will dras tically sharpen your speed control.

Put a club about a club’s length behind a cup on the practice green. Then begin dropping balls down starting at a distance around 6’ from the hole. Drop another at 9’ and a few more every 3’ or so until you have placed 5 or 6 balls down in a line. Now you’re ready to start. The object is to putt every ball to the hole or past it without touching the club behind the hole. You’ll be shocked the first time through the drill at how inept you are. The more diligent you are practicing the better you’ll become.

Want a bigger challenge? Turn the grid around and try your hand going downhill. Or, put two balls down at each spot and challenge a friend for a beverage of choice. Have fun and get better at the same time.

PGA award-winning putting alignment tool enhances focus for accuracy New

The Alignment Ball Mark is the most innovative piece of in-game golf technology in decades because it streamlines the process of putting. The traditional method of aiming your golf ball involves squatting over the ball to adjust it, then backing off to see where it is aimed, over and over again until you get it just right or give up and putt. The issues with this antiquated process is the lack of visual perspective to the hole while hovering over the ball to aim it and the lapse in focus when moving back and forth to adjust and check the ball’s

alignment. Not to mention, it is time consuming and often frustrating.

The Alignment Ball Mark is a PGA Show award-winning, putting alignment tool and specialized ball marker that enhances focus for accuracy while simplifying the process to make it easier and faster. Its patented design combines a two-spike ball marker and a rotating alignment component that allows you to read your putt and adjust your alignment at the same time. By using your putter to adjust the alignment component, it creates the physical dis-

tance necessary for you to visually read the green and the capability to adjust the alignment component simultaneously.

This product was developed to streamline putting in terms of accuracy and pace of play while adhering to the rules of golf, which it does. It is completely legal to use, even in tournament play. According to the USGA and R&A, by their determination, the Alignment Ball Mark is "permitted under the rules of golf". The physical design of the product was engineered with specific features to ensure that it conforms to the equipment standards as well as the rules.

The two-spike ball mark features two spikes that when pushed into the ground, hold the marker in place so that you can adjust the attached alignment component without compromising the position of your ball. The triangular cutouts on its perimeter serve as a reference point for the ball’s position on the green prior to lifting it. Using this product is simple, just mark your ball, adjust the alignment component to your aim spot, then align the line on your ball to the same trajectory as the alignment component and you're ready to putt.
