The Birdie Factory Now Open Boulder’s Only Indoor Golf Bar With

Hitting Bays

Boulder’s only indoor golf bar, the Birdie Factory, is now open at 2520 Arapahoe Ave! The 5,000-square foot facility boasts five spacious golf simulator bays that track all aspects of the swing and provide data to help golfers improve. For kids and non-golfers or just for fun, they also offer multisport games like football, soccer, frisbee, and zombie dodgeball.

PGA Pros offer lessons, and an AI coaching feature provides high-fidelity feedback using cameras and in-ground pressure plates. The facility also has 3 dart boards, a pool table, and plenty of seating. Golf leagues, dart leagues, trivia nights, comedy shows, live music and many more activities are in the works. They are also working on kids’ camps and instruction for younger golfers.

The owner, Andrew “Fergie” Ferguson, a CU alumnus, created this unique space for Boulder residents to play games and build friendships over a beverage, without

having to drive to Denver. Fergie says: “The facility offers a less intimidating environment for beginners to learn the game and advanced technology for experienced golfers to improve their skills.” Fergie has over 20 years of experience in the beverage industry and designed the bar which features 16 draft handles.

The curated list of draft beer, cocktails, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages offers something for everyone. “We wanted to create a community, a third space where people can build connection across generations, without boundaries,” Fergie added. Looking for that hot dog at the turn? Birdie Factory serves hot dogs (and little secret, they are only $2 the last hour of every day). All restaurants in the complex will also deliver food at no charge including Flower Child, Tiffins India, Kalita Grill Greek Cafe, Boulder Fresh Garden Thai, and Pizza hut. NEWS FLASH - You Don’t Need a New Putter!

Retailers don’t like to hear this, but you CAN become a better putter simply by having your existing putter fit to you.

Essentially, there are three variables in putters which can all be adjusted. Retailers have dictated wrongly that putters shipped out for sale be cut at 34” and 35 “ lengths. The reason being; it’s much easier to cut down and regrip a putter than it is to extend the flatstick to the correct length. The average length of a standard putter on the PGA Tour is 33 1/2”.

Let’s address the three variables in order of importance:

LENGTH: Most instructors agree that having the ball directly below your eyes at address gives you the best chance to start your putt on the correct line. Other putting gurus will tell you that your eyes should be slightly inside the line. Either way, step up to the ball and get closer to seeing your putting line. Purchasing a putting mirror will help you see where your eyes are at

address. Nearly every professional golfer uses some sort of mirrored device.

A variety of problems occur if your putter is too long and you’re too far away from the ball. The first issue was addressed above. Being too far inside the actual line doesn’t allow you to see a precise target line. Having your putter cut down to the proper length, where the butt end of the putter grip is connected to the heel of your upper hand works as a point of reference and places you in the proper position at address every time you putt. Golf is a game of consistency.

By standing too far away from the ball, you’ll notice the toe of the putter rises. The result is; you’ll begin striking the putts on the heel of the putter. With all the weight generally toward the toe, the centrifugal force will cause the putter head to close upon contact creating a left pull putt for right handed golfers.

Additionally, by using a putter, which is too long for your individual set-up, and being considerably outside your eyes, the deficiencies cause the putter head to arc more severely. If the club is below your eyes at address, the stroke is more on plane

back and through. When arcing excessively, the face of the putter is square to your target less than when the putter is directly under your eyes. Try it yourself; push the putter head way out in front of you and swing. See! More arc equals less time square to your target. Furthermore, by having your existing putter cut to the desirable length, the next variable could be solved without any further adjustment.

LIE ANGLE: How many times have you seen amateur golfers with the toe of the putter elevated above the ground? (see photo) The putter should be sitting flat on the ground to avoid a heel strike. By adjusting the lie angle, where the center of the putter is soled flat, the result will be more solid contact with the sweet spot and better transfer of energy. Note: even though the putter is the correct length, there’s always a chance to lower your hands and lift the toe of the club. In this case, a slight adjustment will do the trick.

LOFT: There are a variety of thoughts on putter loft. If the effective loft at impact

(actual loft, plus any loft created by your set up), adds elevation and the golf ball becomes airborne you can possibly create a strike with back spin and/or side spin. These are negatives for keeping putts on your intended line.

Ponder this one: when the ball is above the grass tips, there is no resistance mid-air. When the ball is connected to the ground the friction against the grass slows down the bottom of the ball and the top flips over creating roll. If the blade isn’t square at impact, the result can be a putt swirling and skidding off line. Years of experience has taught me that a putt skidding offline, eventually catching up and rolling, has less chance of going in the direction you were hoping for. Get the ball connected to the grass surface quickly for putts which are more consistent and accurate.
