Hello Dragons! Welcome to our very first newsletter for the 2013-2014 term! Congratulations on almost making it through your school year while being wonderful Key Club members and serving the community. I hope you all read through this newsletter because our Division News Editor, Tammy Peng, worked extremely hard on it. Take this chance to see what events are coming up, and who knows, maybe your picture is somewhere within this newsletter. :) I know May was a very busy month for all of us with the endless testing that was going on, but we all survived the craziness of May. June is creeping up on us very quickly, which means SUMMER IS NEAR! We may get a break from school during summer, but I know none of us will ever take a break from SERVICE. We have a lot of fun events coming up in summer, so stay connected with your club because you won't want to miss out. Let's do our best to serve the community even when school is not in session, and there aren't as many service events. Do a good deed when you get the chance because 4 West Dragons never stop serving! Don't lose your connection with Key Club over summer. Attend all the events! This is the time to come to events, make new friends, and make the most out of your summer.Have some fun at our car washes while raising money for Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). Let's reach our division goal of $2000 for PTP by the time Fall Rally rolls around.

L O V E, WE LOVE OUR LTG!

I hope to see you all very soon! Enjoy the rest of the school year, Dragons. Let's make Summer 2013 the best one of them all. :) With Much Love, Katrina Nguyen.

Hey there Dragons! My name is Tina Nguyen and I’m serving as your 2013-2014 Executive Assistant! I am currently a freshman at Segerstrom Fundamental High School. My goal for this summer is to be able to get to know each and every single one of you. Come talk to me, I don’t bite! I want to get everyone pumped up for a year full of service and spirit! Also, do you love Key Club? Because I do! I love how we are able to bring in a large amount of people together from different schools and become one big family. Key Club is my second family and we all love each other no matter what. I anticipate an amazing year with all you dragons!

HEY HEY HEY DRAGONS! I'm VanAnh Nguyen your 2012-2013 Executive Assistant. I foresee that this will be a successful year. This year I plan to be one of Katrina's right hand women throughout her term. I will support Katrina and always be there when the division needs me. This year my goal is to promote more fundraising to donate as a DIVISION to the charities we support such as PTP, CHOC, Project Eliminate, and many more. I also hope to help Katrina keep a strong commute with all the schools through the president----s. This summer I would like to see the hours and attendance of summer events increase as we improve summer member retention. I would also like to help Katrina set up more division meet ups so we can bond and plan out the rest of the year before we go back into the busy school year. Now that you have an overview of what I have in store for the year, let me give you an overview of myself…. Just in case you wanted to know.... or not, but it’s okay you’re going to know anyway. So here goes! I am going to be a junior next school year, and if I am correct that makes me a sophomore this year. I have been in key club from the very start of my high school career. The person who inspired me to join was Caroline Trinh, and there were many people who lead me to stay. I have held the positions of Freshman Rep and Bulletin Editor at FVHS Key Club. Now I currently hold the Activities Commissioner position at FVHS Key Club. My favorite hobby is volunteering which is also another reason why I joined key club. I love putting smiles on people’s faces, and you will mostly likely always see me smiling! When I am not attending events, planning out key club events, or doing homework, I love spending time with my family and friends. This is getting a bit long so I shall make my ending short and sweet. I look forward to working with you all and hope to go on adventures filled with food and service with you all!

. . . . . . Hello! My name is Emily Gong, and I am Edison High School’s Key Club President. I am currently a junior and I have been a member of Key Club since I was a freshman. I love everything that Key Club has to offer, from a variety of service opportunities, to meeting new people, to recognizing your true abilities as an individual. For the upcoming summer months I hope to fundraise for PTP and reach our club goal. In previous years I have noticed that over the summer break, Key Club gets pushed aside for some members, however I hope that I can continue to incorporate the festivities of Key club while still raising money and doing service. Edison’s Board has been brainstorming innovative and fresh ideas for fundraising that complement to our member’s interests and talents. I am interested in hosting and attending summer socials to ensure that we can keep in touch with our fellow dragons! As for the year, I have a lot of inventive ideas planned for my term. Nonetheless, I cannot do anything without my Vice President and partner-in-crime, Vivian Pham, as well as my extraordinary and incredible Board members! I hope that I can increase the number of members the following school year as well as incorporating everyone during meetings and events. In my opinion, every member is an important and necessary piece to the efficient functioning of the Club and that everyone should be recognized for their contribution. I am really excited for my term, and I want to do the best I can to fulfill my member’s needs.

Hi, my name is Caroline and I am the Key Club president from Fountain Valley High School. I enjoy dancing, eating, swimming, playing volleyball, and just being active in general. I joined Key Club at the beginning of my freshmen year, and it is probably the best thing that I have joined during my high school years because I have learned so much and still have a lot more to learn from this club. Also, I have made many new friends whom I would have never met without Key club. In fact, they’re like part of my family now. For my upcoming year, I would like to double the amount of charity donations from my club and to do so, we would be fundraising every month almost. Previous years, our club was known to be very intimidating and unwelcoming, so I would like to flip that around this year and make our club more inclusive. Another one of my goals is to get all of our members to complete at least 5 hours throughout the whole year.

. . . . . . Hi, my name is Freddy Jimenez and I am the current Key Club President of Godinez. I plan on improving the Godinez Key Club and reviving it from the few dismal years we have just experienced. I believe we are already on the right track and look to use this momentum to propel us through a successful summer. Over the course of June, July, and August, I plan on putting my center of focus around two things: fundraisers and socials. I believe the root of the problem the past couple of years has been the lack of socializing among members. Many of the members come from all backgrounds and interests so it has become increasingly difficult to get to know one another, especially when most the people are quite timid. With more socials, I hope to establish a greater continuity among my club and hopefully that will reflect by conducting profitable fundraisers. Our club is not exactly well endowed, and it has become burdensome to access sufficient funds for certain projects. Having both successful fundraisers and socials will not only bring the club closer, but will also improve the club overall for future years. It will bring people of different cultures and ethnicities together while working towards an even greater goal, which is exactly what I love about Key Club. We all face certain difficulties in our life, some that just level us to the ground. But we still put those difficulties aside because there are other less fortunate people facing greater challenges than we are. We put others before ourselves and come together in the selfless act of community service.

Hey Key Clubbers! I am Huntington Beach High School's Key Club President and this will be my second term serving! This year, I am striving to make more improvements in our club by allowing members to help our community through more service projects and events. More specifically, I plan on hosting a car wash and boba or food fundraisers to raise money for PTP and Fall Rally. Outside of Key Club, I am in National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation and Hoag Hospital's Candystriping Program as well as practice tae kwon do. I truly enjoy and love helping our community, which is why Key Club is such a remarkable and valuable organization. Go Division 4 West Dragons! (:

. . . . . . Hello Dragons! My name is Jennifer Dao, and I'm Marina Key Club's president. Outside of Key Club, I don't do much besides eat, sleep, go on the computer, and volunteer some more, so if you ever need a party animal, you can contact me :) I have been in Key Club since my freshman year, and it has given me the opportunity to meet new people, volunteer, establish leadership skills, and have fun all at the same time! In this next year, I hope to accomplish a lot for our club including fundraising for our preferred charities (especially PTP), creating more opportunities for members to volunteer throughout the year, and bringing our club closer as a whole. I look forward to working with everyone this year :) Hi! I’m Christal, president of Mater Dei Key Club. I’m very much looking forward to this upcoming year, and I hope to do something good with this club—and with the entire division, of course. This year, I look forward to collaborating with other clubs and make the best of friends. I joined Key Club not for the social aspect, but for the aspect of helping out the community. Being able to work with my friends is a lucky bonus. I love that I can volunteer and have fun at the same time, and I’m thankful to have a club that bonds with each other. This summer, I hope to raise money for donating to charities and lowering fees for special events like Fall Rally and DCON. I’m aiming to make things easygoing for my club, so that others will feel welcomed and right at home. I look forward to meeting new people within the division and learning from you all.

. . . . . . Sup sup. I'm Thang, OV's President. Key Club is a great organization that balances fun with service. I'm proud to serve this great division as a two term president. With luck, OV can continue to make strides in the right direction to become a pillar of this great division. It's time to make to make the dragon territory known throughout the district. I know you will find Key Club as meaningful and worthwhile as I do.

Hi my name is Jesse Gil.. I am Saddleback High School's key club president. I am currently a sophomore. I am planning to keep contact with the lt. Governor to keep our key club actively involved. I make key club my number one priority. I hope to be key club president until I graduate to keep the club stable at Saddleback. When I grow up I hope to be president of the united states and honor key club.

My name is Quennie Dong, Segerstrom High School president of the 2013-2014 term, and I am excited for this new Key Club year together with our Division 04 West family<3. I've been a Key Club member since 2010 and will always and forever be a dragon of 04 West. I hope to bring fun and exciting events to every single member in our division by working with our lovely Lieutenant Governor, Katrina Nguyen <3. I especially hope that I get to meet every single one of you 04 West members by the end of my term because we're family (even if you don't know it yet). I'm ready for this year, I hope you are too. I hope to meet you at the next service project or social, so I'll see you soon (: .

. . . . . . Hello! My name is Vivian Pham and I am this year's Vice President from Edison High School! My plans for the next year are to provide as many service events as I can for my club and bring all our members together as a family so our division can be even stronger than it already is. Hopefully, I can recruit people starting in the summer so that our club can start off strong in the beginning of the next school year. I joined Key Club so that I can help out the community, but after meeting everyone in our division I realized that I had just joined another big happy family!! I love how everyone works together as a team and the bonds within Division 4 West is incredible. I cannot wait to experience another year with all these beautiful people again, and to meet more as well. I have never had a bad experience while in Key Club, and I don't think I ever will. *knock on wood* As well as snowboarding with my NeffFamily and singing (somewhat) angelically, I love love love Key Club. Aye Dragons! Emily Lam’s the name and I’m the Vice President of Fountain Valley High School Key Club. My major goals, as Vice President, are to form strong bonds with our sponsoring Kiwanis, to create ties with our buddy club: Godinez Fundamental High School, and to accumulate active members by at least 50%. Ambitious and excited, I’m thrilled for this upcoming year that will be filled with voice-loosing spirit battles, amazing service events that will fundraise for the district project, and friendships that will last a life time. This summer FVHSKC will be hosting a dance in order to reach our PTP goal, fundraising with FVHS UNICEF at joint-car washes, and planning social events that will retain our members throughout the break. I am looking forward to spend an entire year with not only our 4 West Dragons, but our entire Rainbow Region as well! Let’s stretch our wings and start fire breathing because Division 4 West is better than the rest. <3

. . . . . . Hello! My name is Stephen Mendoza and I'm a junior at Godinez Fundamental High School. More importantly, I am the vice president for key club. I participate in 3 sports: water polo, wrestling and swimming. I'm in the top ten of my class of 2014 and my grades serve as a testament to my hard work in and out of school. My love for Key Club began two years ago when a friend of mine suggested I attend a meeting; it was definitely the biggest club on campus however it lacked communication among board members. The following year I assumed the position of "junior representative." As junior representative, I prioritized Key Club and through participation in most of the events, I acquired over 100 hours of community service. Now Key Club is bigger than ever at our school under the leadership of Freddy and I. We are striving for more meetings and now with new board members, we have a fresh start towards greatness. My plan is too build many lasting friendships with Key Club members from all over division 04 west! I am advertising upcoming events so that every event, we can have an increasing number of members that attend. I look forward to all events, especially throughout the summer, such as Beach clean-ups, Relay for Life, Kiwanis events and many more. I'd also love for ice-breakers to occur so that we can all communicate with each other as one big loving division would.

Hi, my name is Christina Tran and I am Huntington Beach High School's Vice President. I am also Dakota Le's personal slave. Besides Key Club, I play tennis, the piano, and I'm in church scouts. My favorite things to do are eating, being ratchet, smiling, laughing, shopping, sleeping, and being weird. I L O V E Key Club and Division 04 West so this summer, I want to plan more events so we can continue our services. I plan on fundraising a lot this summer for PTP in order to get ready for Fall Rally. I also see a big dance in the near future(;

. . . . . . Hey there, Division 4 West! My name is Chris Riley, and I serve the Marina High School Key Club as one of the Vice Presidents! I can honestly say that I feel so honored to be working with members and officers from all over the division we serve with a fiery passion. I have held a special place in my heart for Key Club ever since my freshman year, and there will always be a burning spirit to serve inside of me. Throughout this term, I will work my hardest to make members feel welcome at service events and during meetings. They are the reason why we are where we are today, and serving them is the very least we can do. In addition to member appreciation, I will be working on building even stronger bonds with our sponsoring Kiwanis members. I cannot wait to meet all of this wonderful division and make this term shine brightly with our fiery, dragon spirit!

Hello everyone! My name is Chris Nguyen and I am Mater Dei Key Club's Vice President. I have been in Key Club since sophomore year (I am a junior). It wasn't until this year that I was much more active in Key Club. The more I got into Key Club, the more I loved it. I spent time with old friends and made new friends at events. It feels great to do good for the community and have fun doing it. For the upcoming year, my main goal is to get more members to join Key Club at Mater Dei. Our numbers have been declining lately, so I set out to bring our old members back and bring in new members as well. Over the summer, I plan to have a lot of fundraising events. All the money we raised will be put towards fall rally so that more people can attend and see what Key Club spirit. I am looking forward to working with everyone in the upcoming year!

. . . . . . Hello everyone. My name is Pow Hwa Chan and I am Vice-President of Ocean View Key Club. It's been 2 years since I've been in Key Club and I've enjoy being here it every since. However, I want to make it better with what we already have. My plans for this years term is to get involved, help the communities including local projects, and raise plenty of money as donations for organizations such as PTP and UNICEF. With the plans that I've made this year, I also have personal goals to complete over the summer. I plan raise our clubs awareness towards the community by finding as many service projects available and raise enough money for our future funds. Over the past years before I got involved with Key Club, I had no idea that it existed. It wasn't until my brother became president of the his school's is when I wanted to know more about the it. Today, Key Club has been such a great inspiration to me not just because it is an incredible organization, but it is because of the many different people that want to make difference in everyday life. Every person you see is friendly and they are all motivated to help out others. I want to help out as much as I can and I want to do the best in order to make Key Club better.

. . . . . .

My name is Jessica Cao, one of Marina Key Club's two new vice presidents! Aside from Key Club, I juggle playing on Varsity Badminton and the workload from AP and honors classes, but I always have time for Key Club! <3 I am looking forward to meeting and working with everyone this year! I first joined Key Club as a freshman during Club Rush. At my first event, I met new friends and fell in love with service, and now, I am Marina Key Club's vice president. This year, I want to help my president as much as I can to bring even more service and fun to the club! I wish to get to know my members better and bring all of the members closer. Overall, I hope to enjoy my senior year as much as I can with my fellow dragons :)

iHola, everyone! My name is Timmy Nguyen and I am Segerstrom Key Club’s fabulous Vice President for the 2013 – 2014 school year! For my plans during this upcoming school year, I really want to bring in a flow of diversity amongst our club and make sure that our reputation of being “Key Club: The Asian Club,” on campus changes to becoming “Key Club: The Most Awesome Club on Campus!” Throughout this summer, without a doubt it will be incredibly busy, but I will assure you that nothing will affect my Key Club performance at all! I’m planning on working with my treasurers and fundraising chair to make sure that we have enough money to kick off our next school year making it rain hunnets! Not only that, but I will fulfill my duties as Vice President and back up any of my president’s commands! Also, a personal goal of mine would be that I get the chance to meet and get to know every single one of you guys who are reading this right now! You’re definitely one of the reasons why I love this club (It shouldn’t even be called a club because I seriously feel like you guys are already my family!) and why I’m serving swerv-ice this very moment! I hope to see you all soon!

Division 4 West raised $740 IN Article by Abraham Rodriguez from Godinez Key Club There was much enthusiasm from the Godinez Key Club when we arrived at the March For Babies event. We were eager to meet Key Clubbers from other schools of the Divison 4 West. More importantly, we were eager to show our support for babies by marching around Fashion Island. The event got started soon after we arrived and we were amazed by the turnout of people not just from Key Club but from other organizations. We began our march and noticed the small signs that had been placed along the path we took. Our focus no longer was directed at finishing the march but at learning as much as we could about how babies are affected by countless diseases. One would think that, with the innovation and advances in the medical field, babies are almost immortal. But from birth, babies can have their health affected by just the simplest of things. The march was no longer a march but a journey to understand how precious life is. We did enjoy ourselves in the process but we did become aware about the value of life. The March for Babies event was a

Article by Peter Ngo from Marina This month of April was really slow, but later on in the month there were a lot of events like one event I went to was the Key Club banquet called the Red Tie Affair. This event was to get our division together and give out awards to those who stood out the most and worked hardest. I really like this event because there was a dance after the awards were given out, and everyone was dancing and having a blast. I didn’t go to any other events than the banquet but I wish I did because I would have gotten to take more pictures so I can add it to my scrap book I’m making for my school because I’m the historian for our club. I still have plenty of time because I have 346 days left to do it. Article by Carolin Pham from Edison On April 20th, key club members from all the schools in our division attended the D4W Banquet. We helped out by setting up the tables, streamers, and such. Afterwards, food was provided generously and everyone ate food and conversed with old friends and new friends. There were games to get to know new people and an Easter egg hunt for prizes. Towards the end, awards and recognitions were given out to celebrate the old and new board. Finally, the night ended with a dance, which was a great way to end a wonderful banquet.

Article by Christopher Riley from Marina High In the month of April, Marina’s Key club was given the opportunity to work with Shipley Nature center with various events. The most recent was an event called Spring Festival, and there were many children in attendance. The purpose of the event was to educate children of young ages about how the environment is affected by things that humans do from day to day, from wasting water to hurting the ecosystems with pollution. Through this event, I was a part of the face painting group. Although lacking artistic ability, I received compliments from parents and guardians that seemed to boost my morale throughout the event. Even though I was a part of face painting, I still got to learn more about the environment and how we affect it on a day to day basis just by walking around and observing various booths hosted by Shipley. If the club decides on helping with future events, I would like to help the members become more familiar with the staff of Shipley.

Article by Karla Davidson from Edison High It was an amazing experience that truly put the volunteers head to head with what it’s like to help those in need. We personally packed boxes to the brim with all the necessary food of daily life. It was hard work! The chain system of packing the boxes wore a lot of people out but it was well worth it! We were so happy and excited to know that someone would open these boxes and survive off of their contents!

Hey there! Well, if you’ve gotten to this page. It means you either really did read the entire thing or you just skipped here to see me. :* I’m currently a freshman at Fountain Valley High, and almost 1 year old in Key Club years. My love for design and technology sprouted when I got my first GameBoy as a 5year-old then later starting to play MapleStory as a 6 year-old. (Fortunately, I do not play them anymore.☺) I love sweet things (Hint hint) and I am absolutely in love with meeting new people and just people in general. I spend my days playing basketball, being a scout, helping the community, and best of all, Key Clubbin’! Well, it’s been a pleasure to have your attention for approximately a minute or two. ;* I hope you’re ready for this summer’s waves of service because it’s going to be craaaaaaaaaazy! Oh yeah, saying hi to me really makes me happy. ♥ Tammy Peng
