Dear

Note Editor’s

that’sme!

Welcome back, Orcas.

You might have noticed a few changes here in the OrcasZette, and I hope you love them as much as I do! It is all too true that we will be returning to school shortly, but let’s make school an opportunity - not a chore. If the thirst of knowledge is not enough motivation to do well this semester, let Key Club be that driving force. Give yourself to serving to community both in person and in your studies. We are the leaders of the day, so lets not squander any opportunity that comes our way.

Division Candidate Training Conference

On Sunday, December 8th the delicious Canes-T-C took place at Mira Mesa Library! I can tell you from a first hand account that Candidate Training Confrence lives up to the hype! Sure, there isn’t any screaming or huge crowds like FRS or Fall Rally, but the amount of info you get on being LTG is invaluable. If anyone is thinking about running… GO! You will learn everything from running all the way up to the nitty gritty of event planning and advertising. Not to mention the tasty Texas Toast! Come on fellow Caniacs, CTC next year?

News District Council meeting canceled!

Unfortunately, our District Council Meeting scheduled for Dec. 29th was canceled. So, here is all the info we (most likely) would have gone over:

At this DCM, we were to decorate cookies to sell to Kiwanis members, and decorate cards for Women Love Mail 1. Conclave will be in February, so if you are interested in LTG, please fill out the form on Insta ASAP! 2.

I have been meeting with all DLT members to devise plans for their goals next semester including service projects, DCMs. and fundraisers! 3.

Hopefully we will soon have print issues! 4.

On another note, I ask all Orcas to please accept my sincerest apologies for the cancellation. That said, there was also ZERO advertising done prior to the date the DCM was set, so for that too, I apologize. Orcas, hear me when I say that you deserve better. You deserve a better DLT that you feel like you are a part of, so please, if you have any specific suggestions please fill out our new input form or email me at dykstramats@gmail.com

NEXT DCM IS SATURDAY THE 18!!!

Club Guajome Park

In the closing weeks of the first semester at Guajome, our Key Club has remained dedicated to serving the community, organizing events with games, books, and much more. To kick off the month, Key Club contributed to the Vista Christmas Parade by providing free books to hundreds of children, helping spread holiday cheer. Additionally, Key Club members participated in the Guajome Winter Festival, where they set up a booth to raise funds for the club, offering a fun mystery box activity for both students and parents. Another upcoming fundraiser for Key Club is a Bake Sale for DCON, where members will bring in their homemade baked goods to auction off to Kiwanis members, supporting the club’s activities and events. Key Club continues to show dedication and enthusiasm in supporting those around us, and we look forward to even more opportunities to serve and grow in the New Year.

UpdatesMission Vista

This month has been filled with service! We had a blast helping kids at Casita Maker night! There were tons of crafts to help out with! Of course we can't forget the Christmas Parade! We had a blast hanging out with the Kiwanis and other Key Club members! We loved spreading holly jolly joy and giving books to the kids!

Club

El Camino

El Camino’s Key Club has had an eventful last month of 2024! Our president along with our members were a great help in creating this year’s float for the Rose parade which occurred at the beginning of the month. Not only were our members a great help in the making of the float, they were also able to show our appreciation for the amazing nurses at the Scripps Hospital! Our club teamed up with El Camino’s Young Leaders in Healthcare Club to create holiday cards, Christmas ornaments and goodie bags for our nurses. We ended 2024 spreading our gratitude hin our community!

UpdatesRancho Buena Vista

For the last month of the first semester, we’ve contributed in helping out in the Vista Christmas Parade where we handed out various children books to kids while collaborating with the Kiwanis and other members of Key Club from other schools. We also had a farewell pot-luck around the end where our members brought in food and snacks for all of us to enjoy along with pizza as we celebrated our dues finally being paid. We can’t wait for the next month where we’ll be able to do more to serve our community.

Club Vista High

UpdatesSage Creek

We had a wonderfully festive last meeting of the year! We spent it blanket tying and finalizing sock donations that will eventually be donated to Brother Bennos and a local homeless shelter. In addition, after a few years of difficulty, we have officially paid our dues for this term. We are very excited to be able to continue serving our communities and already have a fundraiser planned in January to further support our club.

Stories Something new

During the prep before the Christmas parade, 3 of us MVHS key club members got the honor to help decorate the cars for the parade. We were given tinsel, tape and scissors and got to work! Though we had little tinsel we made it work for the 3 cars. The Kiwanis also had some cute blow ups for their cars. Moving to other matters we had our club photos! We all tried to wear Key Club merch or shades of blue! We can't wait to see it in the yearbook! We are also preparing for officer elections soon! For us they happen in February so we hope to advertise all January to motivate people to go for it!

How Can we do better? Feedback

Our school’s key club has struggled to plan events with both the division and district because of our trimester system schedule. Our club’s club rush started mid-October, giving us very little time to establish a solid membership and pay dues by the requested date in the same month. There was miscommunication regarding the dues deadline, which would have been cleared up if the official date was established initially. I notice that the division sometimes does not give sufficient notice for certain events; which makes it difficult for our club to plan for important events, like the rose parade decorating or the division conclave. As someone who worked with the DLT last year, I found that I was only able to plan for division and district events because of my involvement within the division. Members who are not as active may not have the same access or opportunities, I would suggest that the DLT establish an accessible event calendar, like on a website, where any member can plan events accordingly so we can gather a more representative group of members at our division and even district events. Additionally, the DLT should notify members of events 2-3 weeks prior through email, social media, or a website update for better communication and planning. I hope this can be beneficial to the division overall!
