Stonethrowing kid caught ILLANA FRANTZ

A

stone-thrower was chased down and caught after wrecking the windscreen of a motorist last week.

Heather Nogueira and her son Miguel (17) were driving along Baden Powell Drive, on the bridge crossing the R102, when the incident happened. They noticed a group of five young boys sitting alongside the road while they were on their way to their home at De Wijnlanden Residential Estate at 18:15. They thought nothing of it, but suddenly a brick hit the windscreen of their BMW. “We got such a big fright, and I decided to stop. My son acted purely on instinct, got out and chased after the boys.

“He chased them for approximately five kilometres along the railway tracks,” recalls Heather. In the meantime she notified the security at their estate, who called the police. Miguel, who ran barefoot the entire way, managed to catch one of perpetrators – who turned out to be a 14-year-old boy. Heather says the boy, who was carrying a knife, was handed over to the police. Asked why they decided to stop and chase after their attackers, Heather says, “We felt it was the right thing to do. These people need to be stopped, and we as citizens need to assist the police however we can.” Lieutenant Natalie Martin, spokesperson for the Stellenbosch police, says the minor was released back into the care of his parents on the night of the crime.

Another hit-and-run George Street in Strand is becoming notorious for hit-and-run accidents – another one happened there just last week. Thisfollowsamere10daysafterNikkiMonteiro’s leg was crushed by a car while she was standing on the pavement, waiting to cross the road. According to a police report, the second incident happened on Tuesday 9 October at 19:30. It involved a pedestrian (49) and the driver of a scooter. “It is alleged that the scooter crashed into the pedestrian. The impact of the crash caused the man to be knocked unconscious. The driver of the scooter also fell, but he got up and drove off,” says constable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokesperson for the Strand police. The victim suffered injuries to his head, neck and arm. A colleague who passed by stopped to help and called for assistance. The scooter is believed to be pink and white. The police call on anyone with information to phone Detective Constable Dailan Adams on 079 894 0069 or 021 854 9132.
