MACASSAR: ONGELUK EIS VIER

Vrou se N2nagmerrie

JAMEY THOMAS

“B

aie mense sê jou lewe speel voor jou af tydens ’n ongeluk.

stilstand gekom,” vertel Carla. Ek het vir my lewe gevrees. Niemand

sal ooit weet hoe baie beteken ’n drukkie of selfs ’n vriendelike gesig in so ’n geval nie.”

GORDON’S BAY: JOB CREATION

First legal car guards hired A

pilot project with the aim of combating both crime and unemployment has been launched in Gordon’s Bay.

Heyns de Waal – a member of the Gordon’s Bay Community Police Forum (CPF) who initiated this project – says many motorists have complained about being intimidated into paying car guards. In an effort to put a stop to this, the CPF, the United Reformed Church, SAPS and the Metro Police saw to it that two individuals were screened, fingerprinted, interviewed and trained to become legally sanctioned car guards. “All illegal car guards have been removed from the designated parking area used by churchgoers, and these two individuals have

been issued with an official CPF identification bib,” De Waal says. “The bib identifies them with a number linked to their file at the police station and at the church office.” De Waal says a key aspect that sets this project aside from other attempts is the fact that the car guards may not accept any money from motorists. All payments to them come from the church, and the money is collected at the door in a marked tin. This, De Waal says, eliminates the possibility of intimidation. “There are already other areas and business zones asking for something to be done about the car guards in their area, but we must first see how this project runs and learn from any teething problems before assisting other zones,” says De Waal

NEWS SUMMARY “Many people say that your life flashes before your eyes during a life-threatening moment like an accident. But this is not the case. When my car rolled over the N2, I started praying like never before. I just waited for the pain to hit my body.” These are the words of Carla van der Voort (25) after she miraculously survived an accident on the N2 this past Sunday. She was on her way back to Cape Town, where she lives and works during the week, after her weekend visit to her family in Somerset West. Three vehicles were involved in the accident, and four lives were lost. –front page Teamwork between the Strand police and community led to the arrest of a man (24) on a charge of drug possession. The police had been tipped off about a drug deal taking place at a house in Sercor Drive. A warrant was obtained and, upon searching the house on Monday afternoon, officers confiscated half a kilo of dagga, 77 stoppe dagga, 26 small bags of tik and half a Mandrax pill. Graham Muller was arrested, and appeared in court on Tuesday. His case was postponed to 23 October. –page 3

EERSTE RIVER: CRIME

Stonethrowing kid caught ILLANA FRANTZ

A

stone-thrower was chased down and caught after wrecking the windscreen of a motorist last week.

Heather Nogueira and her son Miguel (17) were driving along Baden Powell Drive, on the bridge crossing the R102, when the incident happened. They noticed a group of five young boys sitting alongside the road while they were on their way to their home at De Wijnlanden Residential Estate at 18:15. They thought nothing of it, but suddenly a brick hit the windscreen of their BMW. “We got such a big fright, and I decided to stop. My son acted purely on instinct, got out and chased after the boys.

“He chased them for approximately five kilometres along the railway tracks,” recalls Heather. In the meantime she notified the security at their estate, who called the police. Miguel, who ran barefoot the entire way, managed to catch one of perpetrators – who turned out to be a 14-year-old boy. Heather says the boy, who was carrying a knife, was handed over to the police. Asked why they decided to stop and chase after their attackers, Heather says, “We felt it was the right thing to do. These people need to be stopped, and we as citizens need to assist the police however we can.” Lieutenant Natalie Martin, spokesperson for the Stellenbosch police, says the minor was released back into the care of his parents on the night of the crime.

MACASSAR: PET WELFARE

Hell to haven H

oney, a female pitbull, was given a second chance at life when she was rescued two weeks ago.

Jackie’s friend Liza Buunk donated R100, and Jeff PhillipsPage donated R500, which Jackie says she will use to have Honey vaccinated. Jackie says PETS have also undertaken to have Honey spayed. The tough pup is recovering well, and has already settled into her new home. “What a beautiful doggy this is!” Jackie says. “I can’t wait to see what she looks like in a few weeks. Her former owner should be ashamed for letting her get like this!”

The badly neglected canine was found chained up at a house in Macassar by local animal welfare organisation PETS (Pets Empowerment in Townships). Jackie Howe, the dog’s new owner, says that when Honey was found she could hardly walk or stand, and weighed a mere 12 kg. Jackie says Honey’s eyes were sunken due to malnutrition, and she also had a bad eye infection. Jackie came across Honey when she saw PETS’ plea for assistance on Facebook. “I wanted to lift the burden from them for additional bills and treat the dog – every little bit helps!” She says within minutes PetPals had brought the nearly lifeless dog to her. “We thought she wouldn’t make it,” says Jackie ,who immediately took the dog to a local veterinary surgeon, where she was put on a drip. CROHN SE SIEKTE: KNOU FINANSIES

Dapper Carl (16) kla nie oor pyn JAMEY THOMAS

’n

GB NAVY: CULTURAL DAY

Rainbow station ILLANA FRANTZ

T

he SA Naval College in Gordon’s Bay celebrated South Africa’s heritage with a cultural day last Friday.

Ensign Sipheshile Khanyile, assistant divisional officer, says this was the first opportunity staff members had to celebrate Heritage Day, as it was dependent on the students’ training schedule. Staff members were divided into groups representing different cultures, and each had to portray their culture as best they could. Groups included the Nguni, which comprised the Xhosa, Zulu, Swazi and Ndebele; the Sesotho, with the Sotho and Tswana; and the Limpopo, featuring the Venda, Pedi and Tsongas. The Cape coloured people and Afrikaners were also represented. “Each group had to dress in their culture’s traditional outfit, cook traditional food and have an exhibition explaining their culture to everyone,” says Ensign Khanyile. “The day was a great success as everyone went out of their way to prepare for the event. The weather played along and everyone participated fully, sharing in the spirit of ubuntu.”

Riaan Sinden, John Gelant, Desmond Jannetze, Marvon Mentoor, Malcolm Davids and Hennie Cooksen represented the Kaapse Klopse.

HELDERBERG: IN MEMORIAM

Bekende bouer verloor sy stryd teen kanker

Diep sportspore getrap S

Cape Doctor arrives with a vengeance The good, the bad and the ugly blew into the Helderberg in the form of the powerful southeaster this week. The good is that this wind, also known as the Cape Doctor, clears the air of pollution and also usually heralds the beginning of summer. However, this will not be the case for us just yet – the weather forecast for the weekend is rain and cool temperatures between 10 and 17 °C, so summer is still not quite here. The bad things this wind has brought along with it are tree, plant and grass pollen, which for those people suffering from allergies is not a pleasant prospect. Also bad is that one can’t spend time outside with young children for fear of them being blown over, never mind going to the beach or launching a boat to go fishing. The ugly elements that unfortunately often go hand in hand with this powerful wind is crime – criminals often take advantage and break into houses and businesses during a howling gale. The police have warned home and business owners to be extra vigilant, and to make sure their security systems are in place and working. Many older Helderberg residents believe that the present weather pattern is all topsy-turvy, and that the Cape Doctor should have started at the beginning of August. The older folk also predict that we’re in for a very hot, dry summer – when it finally does arrive. Guess we’ll have to wait and see what transpires.

LETTERS

Join the Street People’s Centre in prayer I am writing to invite church members, the community of the Helderberg and anyone else who might be interested to attend a prayer meeting at the United Church in Bright Street, Somerset West. The prayer meeting will be held on Friday 26 October from 10:30 to 11:30. This will be followed by a short prayer at the Helderberg Street People’s Centre (9 Victoria Street) just before noon. Everyone is welcome, and they can spend as much or as little time as they can spare. The renewal of the lease of the Helderberg Street People’s Centre has come up. We understand that there is considerable opposition to the soup kitchen and centre from some sectors of the community. Our position is that we have been on the premises for 10 years, and have not encountered many

problems from our neighbours, or indeed the wider community. The poor, homeless, vulnerable and those in need of help have very few places to which they can turn. We have, over the years, I believe, alleviated a tremendous amount of hardship, hunger and suffering. We have also provided opportunities for people in terms of skills training and education. We have assisted those with alcohol and drug dependence problems. In short, we have tried very hard to demonstrate a Christian response to the suffering that we witness – and we have done so with faith and the support of the community – and without any financial support from national, provincial or local government. We are, we believe, in the right location, in the centre of town, which is accessible to both the

needy and our teams of volunteers from the churches in the area. We therefore feel that we should be allowed to stay in our present position, until such time as suitable and convenient alternative accommodation can be found for us. The purpose of the meeting on 26 October is to pray for the Lord to guide our councillors and the City of Cape Town, the officials responsible for making the decision on the lease. It is our prayer that heed will be paid to the needs of the poor, marginalised and vulnerable, and that a welcoming place for them will be found our community. SW locals are ‘over the moon’ with new paving I recently decided to conduct an upgrade of my property in Somerset West, starting with a complete new driveway and pathway leading to the front entrance, and new stoep with steps. Having finished this phase and being so satisfied with the quality of workmanship, I decided to tackle the pool and entertainment area. This having been completed,

myself and my wife would like to thank Peter Barnard of Somerset Paving and his great team for a thoroughly professional job. We are over the moon with the end result and cannot believe the transformation. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble for Peter. With his innovative creativity and attention to detail, the end result was highly satisfying.

Anybody who may wish to add value to their property need look no further than Peter of Somerset Paving. I would also like to make special mention regarding Donovan, who was ever so helpful and added the finishing touches that made the work completed so special. AT KEAYS

Undercover road mosaics deserve to be seen by everybody I have been driving from Strand to Stellenbosch every day since 2008. Since the beginning of the year I’ve been taking the bus, so looking around is a bit easier. The other day a friend on the bus said that she felt so bad for never

noticing the rock mosaics on the cement embankment between the R44–Main Road intersection and Heldervue turn-off. I had to admit to her that I hadn’t noticed them either in all this time. Please can a request be put

to the municipality (or whoever is responsible for that stretch of road) to clean up the embankment so that everyone can see and appreciate the mosaics?

Weereens dankie. As jy die brief sien Noeleen, gee my gerus by 021 852 2589 ’n luitjie.

SOMERSET WEST: PERFORMANCE

Unleash your inner star T

he phrase “been there, done that, got the T-shirt” is exactly what Janine Holthuysen, principal of the Niné Academy of Film, Theatre and Dance in Somerset West can say to her prospective students. Janine, who recently opened this school, is offering classes in disciplines related to a career in the performing arts. Having spent her formative years in the Helderberg, Janine trained in drama and dancing and went on to perform in major musical productions at the Baxter and Artscape theatres, as well as in film, television and commercials. She is a qualified speech and drama teacher, as well as a modern dance teacher, having obtained her qualifications at the Trinity College of London and the Association of International Dance Teachers. To her studio she brings over 20 years of experience in stage and film. Janine’s lifelong fascination with

the performing arts was sparked when she joined the Somerset West Playhouse. She performed in a number of local amateur productions before professionally “treading the boards”. Her dancing talents blossomed under the tutelage of Jean Parker, then principal of Outline Dance Studio, and Lindy Scott, then of Stage Coach Drama. This multi-talented performer has worked in professional theatre shows as a dancer, actress, choreographer and singer, and has done her bit with technical crews. Her theatre experience includes roles in Evita, Fiddler on the Roof, Hair, District Six (recording), Queen at the Opera, Poison and Annie. “It’s my dream to package my training and experience in film, dance and theatre to equip students with the tools and qualifications they need, and expose them to the joy and excitement of the world of entertainment,” says Janine. He then moved to live with his father in Kimberley, and decided it was time to let the family know. “After the confession, everything was buried and we never talked about it or even brought it up in conversations again.” He describes this as being “the loneliest time in my life”. As time went by however, his family gradually accepted the fact that he was gay. “Today they fully accept me for who I am, and there are even jokes being made about the past dramas. They now support me every step of the way and in every aspect of my life.” Asked what advice he would give to someone who wants to come out, he says, “The right and healthy channels, like help centres, must be followed as far as possible, as it is always heartbreaking to see how many individuals find the wrong ways to cope – in the forms of alcohol and drugs.” To vote for Martiens, SMS GSA8 to 40439. GORDON’S BAY: LIVE SHOW FEEL THE BLUES: Known for their blues, but with the versatility of their young Canadian born vocal powerhouse, a performance by the Natasha Meister Band is always a feast for the ears. With Natasha’s whiskeysoaked vocals and maestro guitar skills, the audience is inevitably left awestruck. They are an act not to be missed at Bertie’s Moorings this Sunday (21 October). The show starts at 18:00, and entrance is free.

Southern Gypsey Queen

Ten years of SGQ I

t’s been 10 years since Southern Gypsey Queen (SGQ) hit the road with nothing more than a demo CD and barely enough fuel to get from town to town. The band remember those days fondly, despite the fact that they were quite challenging. At that time they were the only young band playing old school rock ’n roll, and were on a mission to find an audience for the music they loved playing. And Paul Wilson (drums), Tammy Wilson (bass and vocal) and Gareth Wilson (guitars) succeeded in igniting a new spark in rock. All their albums – Sweet Voodoo, Rise Up, Be the Lion, Delusions of Grandeur – have all been major successes. With the launch of Be the Lion, SGQ got the chance to tour with the Springbok rugby team and played to around 40 000 people a night in all our major cities.

Their track Souls of Africa was included on the world cup album. In the last two years, SGQ have also been touring with Albert Frost and performing a collaborative show affectionately known as “Queens of the Frost Age”. Due to the success of these tours, SGQ and Albert record an album together under a new name – “And it promises to be an album that will blow your heads off,” a spokesperson vows. For their anniversary tour, the band recorded Stand up Again, a new track available as a free download at www.gevaaalik.com. This is the band’s way of saying thanks to the fans for all the support over the last decade. As part of their tour, they will perform at Bertie’s Moorings on Friday 19 October at 21:00. The show promises to be really special, with stripped-down acoustic versions of all your favourite SGQ songs.

Father of first SA sports car turns 90 J

ohn Myers, a designer and builder who worked on South Africa’s first locally manufactured and built sports car – the Protea – celebrated his 90th birthday on 9 October. Myers, who resides in Strand, was born in 1922 in Dagshai, India. Before the start of World War II he moved to England, where he joined the Young Soldiers Battalion at the age of 16. He was posted around England and worked for the mechanical division. Myers was later transferred to Burma, where he was responsible for keeping vehicles moving along Ledo Road, which was built in WWII to carry supplies. He emigrated to South Africa at the end of the war, having fallen in love with the country when he stopped over in Durban on his way to Burma. Coming out of the Blitz, South Africa represented the land of milk and honey to him. Myers was a race car driver, and

passionate about motocross and overland cycling. He participated in many races to Mozambique, and has a room full of trophies to testify to his daredevilry and talent. He moved to Strand in 1991, and has been actively involved in the motor car and vintage and veteran car world his whole life, working for Volvo and then the Vintage and Veteran Car Shop in Johannesburg. He taught himself to drive from the time his feet could touch the pedals of his father’s car, going around and around the garden whenever they went out on a Sunday afternoon. He has also been an active sportsman – badminton, tennis, table tennis and squash were just some of his hobbies aside from race car driving. He only stopped riding his motorbike 10 years ago. Myers has three children – two daughters and a son – four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Edward is in Januarie 1976 oorlede.

Lu zandrie was hoofmeisie in 2002.

LEAFY LOVE: Somerset House pupils recently planted 14 trees to give a little something back to the planet. The project, which saw five pin oaks and nine olive trees planted, was initiated by grade 7 pupil Shannon MorganWilson as part of her leadership programme. Shannon chose the olive trees, donated by her family, for their symbolism of peace. The school hopes to have pupils harvest the fruit and process them once a year. Seen here (from left) are grade 5 pupils Hisha Prag, Janka Scholtz, Julia Robb, Caitlin Garvs, Ester Pedro, Jacqui Ekermans, Vic toria Brakhoff and Erin Oelofse.

BANDANA DAY: The children of Farthing Wood nursery school in Somerset West have been supporting the Sunflower Foundation for the past 12 years. Supporting the organi sation’s Bandana Day (Friday 12 October), themed “Share a little save a life” they wore bandanas to school. Adopt a loving duo

Animal Rescue AGM

This brother-and-sister pair are in need of a loving and permanent home. Leia and Troy, who are just under a year old, have been together since birth and will make loving, playful and affectionate pets.

The Township Animal Rescue Lwandle/Nomzamo holds its AGM at the Somerset West Bowls clubhouse on Monday 22 October at 14:00. For more information, please phone Jillian on 021 855 l824.

ADOPT A FELINE COMPANION: PetPals has a beautiful, young Manx cat available for adoption. She loves attention, and when she receives it, you are rewarded with purrs and cat talk. She would do well with a feline friend, but no dogs. She has also tested negative for feline AIDS and leukaemia. She has been sterilised (hence the shaven tummy), innoculated, dewormed and treated for fleas. For those interested in opening up their hearts and homes to her, an adoption form – see www.petpals.org.za – must be completed and an adoption fee of R300 is payable to contribute towards vet ex penses. For more information, please phone Yolanda on 021 854 6317 or 083 411 0738.

Troy

Leia

They get along well with other dogs, as well as cats and children. Leia and Troy were adopted from PetPals as puppies, but unfortunately their owners are going their separate ways and cannot keep them any more. The dogs have been vaccinated and sterilised, and are currently in the foster care of a family in Somerset West. The youthful pair hope to find a home where they can stay together, or, if separated, at least have another canine companion to play with. If you are willing to open up your heart and home to them, please complete the PetPals adoption form which you will find at the website www.petpals.org.za. If you’d like to find out more about this opportunity, please phone Yolanda on 083 411 0738 or 021 854 6317.

Learn about the cash cycle

COLUMN: FINANCES

What you don’t want to hear from your advisor A

s investors we hate ambiguity. We want certainty, which is why we dislike the idea of randomness.

We want our advisors and managers to know exactly what is going on. Financial experts must speak confidently and explain what is driving markets. Every day you will hear a “confident” market commentator explain why the stock market went up or down that day. What you don’t want to hear from your financial advisor is that he or she had absolutely no idea why market went up or down that day. This is why we mistakenly focus on the latest event in an attempt to explain or rationalise the market’s movement. Truth is, it is chaos out there. The very same share can go up 3% in the morning and then 5% down again in the afternoon, for no plausible reason. Top forecasters never win an award twice in a row – the best they can hope for is to get it approximately right. Investors need to overcome their inherent aversion to ambiguity. Expect surprises: nobody really

knows. Yet we spend vast amounts of money on trying to forecast the future. Ironically, even if you could accurately predict an event or occurrence, how the market will react is anyone’s guess. Therefore it is unlikely you would be able to profit with certainty from your information, even if you did know. Humans are emotional beings; we are switched on the whole time. This probably has something to do with our prehistoric days when our emotional response or reaction was the difference between being lunch and having lunch – your

fight-or-flight response to a threat or opportunity. Nowadays the threat of risk of losing or the opportunity of making money on the stock market produces the same emotive response, overriding our rational thought processes. This is why it is so difficult to be contrarian or “swim upstream”; it is counter to our instincts, we are more comfortable following the “herd”. Investors prefer to buy shares when the price is rising and sell shares when the price is falling, which is typical herd behaviour. By buying when everyone else is buying we avoid the risk of being different, being wrong on our own. We take comfort in knowing that if we are wrong then everyone else is also wrong. This is irrational investor behaviour. “An investor who has all the answers doesn’t even understand the questions.” – Sir John Templeton

Shirley Baillie will give a short insight into her book, Easy Access to the Sectional Title Act; Peter Brand will talk on the importance of security. The seminar runs from 08:30 to 12:30. A registration fee of R50 for members and R70 for non-members gets you in. The fee includes finger food. For more information, phone Staswest chairperson Syd Rabbitts on 083 441 9694 or send an email to sydrabbitts@iafrica.com. You can also phone association secretary Ruth Bird on 082 643 4426, or email ruthdb@telkomsa.net.

Aiden Masencamp shows the form which earned him the u.13 SA Junior Championship title at the Hurley SA Junior Championships held in Jeffrey’s Bay recently.

Aidin wins second SA surf title

T

alented young Boland surfer Adin Masencamp, who hails from the Helderberg, successfully defended his u.13 SA Junior Championship title at the Hurley SA Junior Championships held in Jeffrey’s Bay recently.

This is the most important junior tournament on the South African calendar and has become a 5-star event due to the support and commitment by Hurley as a sponsor. Competitors selected by nine provincial associations travelled to the event to compete for individual SA junior titles in u.17, u.15 and u.13 categories for boys and girls, and the team accumulating the highest points took home the coveted Freedom Cup. For Boland the highlight was the boys under 13 division where Adin Masencamp took to the waters to defend his 2011 title which he earned in Durban. In his first heat he set the bar high with the highest heat score with a 16,75 out of a possible 20, putting him in good contention for the Citroen Highest Heat score award of R3 000. He progressed through his heats, posting scores of 9 point rides in heats and keeping a high standard of creative surfing up. It was this power surfing, consistency and ability to use a wide range of manoeuvres on the wave that dif-

ferentiated him in the final from the other contestants. The final was held in perfect overhead size waves and Adin held nothing back and secured his title. This was also the first time in the 16-year history of the event that it was held in Jeffrey’s Bay, which added stature and allowed the cream of South African junior surfers to put on a top class show of their talents. The venue lived up to its reputation and delivered five straight days of excellent surf at the Point, with offshore winds every day grooming the waves. Eastern Province dominated the champs on their home surf, clinching the coveted Freedom Cup team trophy for the first time and earning three of the six SA individual titles and three of the five special awards on offer. The team title was close with the KwaZulu-Natal Central (KZNC) team from Durban finishing just 184 points behind EP in second place, with defending champions Western Province third. Boland were placed fourth followed by Southern KZN, Southern Cape, Border, the SA Development Academy and Zululand. On the final day an on fire Benji Brand (WP) scored a 17 out of 20 just narrowly sneaking passed Adin Masencamp to claim the Citroën Highest Heat Score award and claiming him the u.17 SA Junior Title.

Bolands Diran Zakarian surfed well throughout the event and claimed a well deserved second place in the u.17 final. Other Boland surfers who were standouts were: Steffen Burrows – semi finals boys u.15; Hilton Pelser – semi finals boys u.17; Anoush Zakarian – semi finals girls u.15; David Burrows – quarter finals boys u.13 Shane Pratt, one of the sponsors of the Boland team and owner of Natural Energy Surf Shop said ”The great part of having SA champs at J Bay was that we could see a definite improvement in our local kids surfing as they have all been putting so much effort. We are also very stoked with our team rider, Adin, to surf with such passion and bring home another title to the Strand.” The full Boland junior team consisted of: Boys u.13: Adin Masencamp, David Burrows, Julian Zens; Boys u.15: Tristan Lev, Steffen Burrows, Bradley Roberts, Milan van Rhyn, Christian Olivier; Boys u.17: Diran Zakarian, Norman Lotz, Hilton Pelser, Gareth Williams, Stuart Dodds; Girls u.15: Anoush Zakarian; Girls u.17: Chantelle Boschoff, Grace Steele and coach: Peder Christensen and Manager: Hannes Stemmet For full details about the event check out www.sajuniorchamps.co.za

The present strong southeaster has changed the colour of the water to a true peasoup colour (typical kob water). At present Melk Bay, Macassar and right up to Strandfontein would be the best options. When the southeaster blows for more than four days, the water along the beaches and reefs becomes cooler; the ensuing southwest wind then once again warms up the water and the plankton rises and

The shoals of belman also start to frequent the shallows along Melk Bay and Blake’s beaches. The use of very fresh chokka is essential to catch kob and geelbek. Belman and white steenbras prefer fresh prawn or bloodworm along our beaches and reefs, and at Harmony Park. For some reason white steenbras caught from the Gordon’s Bay harbour wall and Bikini Beach prefer prawn with glow beads at night to bloodworm. On Saturday morning shore anglers caught a few good kob from Verlee bank and

The present strong southeaster also marked the start of summer and the yellowtail that are entering the bay – the same wind has sent snoek up the West Coast. The second shore inter-club competition was held last Saturday. On Friday 5 October Robert continued his fine form, winning the De Zalze Junior Open (u.19) by playing a second subpar round, finishing with a 2 under par 70 to win by two strokes. On Sunday 7 October Robert played in the De Zalze Senior Open and shot a 76 and a 70 to finish third on 146. Robert also represented Paul Roos Gymnasium at the Boland schools’ qualifying championships held in Wellington on Monday 8 October, and won the event with a 1 under par 71. His excellent form during 2012 has resulted in him being nominated by the WP Golf Union to participate at the Albatross International Junior Champs in New Delhi, India, in November. This is an individual strokeplay tournament, and will be Robert’s first shot at an international victory for the age group 17 and under. Robert is currently in the top 10 of the South African junior (u.19) rankings.

Clubs meet WPRFU president

J

ust when we thought that the club rugby season was over, Pniel Villagers played Brackenfell at Newlands this past Saturday. This was a bottom-of-the-log Super League B clash to determine who was to take the drop down to Premier A. The match ended with Brackenfell convincingly beating Pniel Villagers, thus confirming their Super League B status and forcing Collegians to drop. So how does this affect our region? Pniel Villagers and Collegians will now do battle with the Helder-

berg-based Macassar, St Georges and Sir Lowrians in Premier A next season. Who would have ever thought that Sir Lowrians would be travelling to Lentegeur for a league fixture? It’s very pleasing to see clubs reward their players for their efforts during the year. Strand Pioneers held a glitzy awards night last Friday, and Strand United took their players to Molteno for a day of fun. All Saints will hold their prizegiving on Friday 26 October at Nitefusion, and Raithby Universals will have theirs on Friday 26 October at the Weber Gedenk Primary School

hall in Jamestown. After a successful first meeting of all the local rugby club chairpersons in the Helderberg last week Tuesday saw them gather again to meet with WPRFU president Thelo Wakefield. Wakefield was given the opportunity to pitch his vision for the union he is likely to be re-elected to in November.

Battswood pitchers outgun H’berg Pirates Helderberg Pirates lost 7–9 in a closely contested away match against Battswood on Saturday. Pirates were unable to make up the run deficit created by Battswood in the penultimate frame and, despite a late run surge headed by SP Griebenow’s home run, Battswood’s pitching staff were able to stop Pirates two runs short of a tie. Pirates’ second team, playing away in their first match of the season against Bothasig, won their game 7–6.

Boland stun their opponents at SA championships Wunderkind Tristan Roberts (15) a Boland Bodyboarding Association (BBA) rider, made bodyboarding history at the SA champs in Margate recently by claiming both the boys’ and pro titles with a display of riding that matched the best in the world. His superb effort also helped the BBA team secure second place at the 25th running of this event. Boland finished just behind Central KwaZulu-Natal, which was the best result a Boland team has ever managed at this event. Seven provincial teams competed at this year’s national event. Team captain Morne Loubscher was thrilled with Boland’s success, and said it was due to the dedication of the Boland management and the riders themselves. Out of the eight divisions in which Boland competed, they had riders in the finals of six divisions. BBA riders who stood out were: Morne Loubscher (first, masters’ division), Bernard Hoogendjik (second, men’s division), Marcel Habbits (third, grand masters’ division), Rosie Lombard (third, ladies’ division), Dylan le Roux (third, boys’ division) and Wian Oosthuizen (fourth, boys’ division). “The Boland Bodyboarding Association would like to thank its riders and management for the unbelievable time in Margate and the amazing results the province received this year,” says Morne. “Special thanks to Reef SA, who sponsored the teams’ kit for the event.”

The prize winners were (back row, from left) Wesley Josephs (player of the year), Keanu Brown (secondteam best back), Cassiem Smith (top tryscor er, 17), Abdul Hafeez Rhoda (best back, u.21), Ismail Stoff berg (best forward, u.21), (front) Moenzier Daggia (sports man of the year), Rakieb Hess (most dedicated player), Eu gene Pieterse (firstteam best back) and Claude Thomas (most improved secondteam player).

Excellent pitching by Nicolas van Loggerenberg and Ian Matthews kept the home team at bay while aggressive batting, exemplified by Garth Uys’ home run, pushed Pirates to the win. Thanks went out to umpires Derek Lambert and George Fischer, who helped the respective teams out over the weekend. SWCC win both their T20 matches S

omerset West won both their games in the second weekend of T20 matches for the new season.

On Saturday they played Cravenby at home and restricted them to just 98 runs. Stand-out bowlers were R Bischoff (4-114-2), F Killian (2-0-11-2) and J Wilshere (4-110-1). Somerset West got their innings off to a slow start, and the loss of few vital wickets didn’t help their cause. However, J Cilliers then came to the crease and upped the tempo with an impressive knock of 27 (off 27 balls). Luigi Scheffers also impressed with 41 (off 51) to pass the total in the 20th over and claim the win. On Sunday SWCC played Langa away. Somerset West bowled first and, after an excellent display of bowling and fielding, they restricted Langa to 78. Special mention should be made of L Roodtman’s fielding. He took two superb catches and saved at least 15 runs on the boundary. The bowlers showed great skill in restricting Langa to their small total. Opening bowlers J Wilshere (4-1-1-6) and E Groenewald (4-0-2-14) used the new ball well and took three wickets between them in the first seven overs. R Meyer and S Dicks followed up the initial good work with equally impressive figures of 2-0-0-7 and 2-0-2-9. Finally, F Killian showed great skill, bowling at the death to end with figures of 4-0-2-15. Somerset West then chased down Langa’s small total within 16 overs to claim a bonus point. L Trezines carried his bat throughout the innings, ending on 42 not out to set up the win. The second team lost their one-day away match against UCT by 57 runs.

Hottentots Holland Cricket Club’s first team find form in two T20 matches Hottentots Holland Cricket Club’s (HHCC) first team won their final two AMA T20 matches played this past weekend. HHCC played Sherwood Manenberg at Elsies River on Saturday and won the match by 49 runs and on Sunday played Blue Bells at Gustrouw and won by 18 runs. HHCC batted first against Sherwood Manenberg where their openers Shakoer Baderoen (57*) and Yasien Railoun (59) took the team to an impressive 139/1. HHCC then took the field and with the fielders supporting the bowlers well they bowled their opponents out for 90 runs. The best bowlers were Yaseen Jakoet with 4-2-10, Warren Martin 3-2-9 and Shuroor van Lily 4-3-16. HHCC earned an all-important bonus point from the match.

HHCC won the toss against Blue Bells and batted first and were soon in trouble on 30/4 after 8 overs. The middle-order batsmen then came to the rescue with some great stroke play and big hitting by Wayne Cloete (28), Edwin Daniels (30) and Yaseen Jakoet (25*) propelled the score to 116/6. HHCC then took to the field and soon had Blue Bells struggling. The first wicket fell in the fifth over and after that at regular intervals and Blue Bells were all out for 98 runs. Yaseen Jakoet with 3-2-11, Gasant Moller 4-3-25 and spin bowler Emaad Opperman with 4-1-8 were the pick of the bowlers. This performance could earn HHCC a spot in the semifinal of this competition. The club’s second, third and u.17 colts team

also played last week. The seconds played Camps Bay at Gustrouw and lost by three wickets. HHCC batted first and scored 145/7 in 35 overs. The best batsmen were Dawood Joseph (34), Winston Thomas (27) and Logan Savory (30*). The best bowlers were Rafiq Baderoen 7-2-30, Behoudin Achmat 5-2-23 and Nathan du Preez 4-1-9. The third team played Milnerton away and lost by four runs. Milnerton batted first and scored 170/6. The best bowlers were Ziyaad Salie 7-2-28 and Zakariya Baderoen 7-2-21. HHCC were all out for 167. Ziyaad Salie (35), Zakariya Baderoen (21) and veteran Noor Baderoen (61) were the best batsmen. The colts played Strandfontein away and

won the match by two wickets. Strandfontein batted first and were all out for 134. The best bowlers were Ismodien Brinkhuis 6-4-18 and Chestlyn Liebenberg (4 overs for 4 runs). The colts passed the score with two overs spare. The best batsmen were Umar Crombie (43 from 30 balls), Ikraam Daggia (21) and Usama Salie (20). The colts are the latest addition on to HHCC and this was their first official match in the WP league structure. The first team start league fixtures this weekend and play Rylands on 20 and 27 October at Gustrouw. The seconds play Milnerton away and the thirds play Rondebosch away while the colts are also away to Avendale.
