ACTION: POLICE URGE BEACH GOERS TO REPORT LEWD ACTS

Flashers prowl Strand beachfront DELIAH BRINKHUIS

The recurrence of alleged flashers at Strand Beach may result in City of Cape Town’s law enforcement upping their patrols. A 25-year-old Strand woman who visited the beach with her sister and a friend at about 13:30 last Tuesday became the latest victims after a man exposed himself and masturbated in front of them. Dorette Basil of the Strand Ratepayers Association says this is not an isolated incident, and that she has personally encountered several men exposing themselves on the beach.

She has reported it to police and the neighbourhood watch, but by the time they respond, the perpetrators have fled. The young woman recalls how the man had been lurking in the distance close to the dunes while she and her friends were sunbathing. “Ironically, I was just telling them that I had seen men masturbating in the dunes on several occasions,” says the woman. She says earlier the man had pretended to be urinating. “I screamed at him, and he left,” she says. However, when she looked up a few minutes later, he was standing a few metres away.

“Hehadcomecloser, andwasabout five metres away from us,” she recalls. Thewomansayshewasmasturbating as he looked at them. “We were so shocked. I had just talked about it, and here it was happening!” She says they screamed at him to stop, but he remained unfazed and continued with his sexual act. “I started running towards him, throwing rocks and anything I could find at him,” she says. He eventually zipped up his pants before slowly walking through the dunes towards the street. According to Strand police spokes-

person Constable Mbulelo Mafuna the incident had not been reported. He says perpetrators of such deeds can be arrested for public indecency. Basil says its alarming that the men are becoming more and more brazen. She cites the absence of policing as the cause of these incidents. “There should be continuous patrols throughout the year, and not just over the holiday seasons,” she says. Basil has been steering a security camera project for the Strand coastline for the past few years. According to her this is, however, impossible without funding from the City of Cape Town.

Ward 83 councillor Dave Venter says an additional law enforcement officer was appointed a few years ago who has been patrolling the beach area as well. “He immediately responds to incidents such as these,” says Venter and adds that these indecent acts should be reported to the police immediately. Venter says he has requested increased patrols by Metro Police and Law Enforcement on the beach front which he believes will deter the perpetrators. Incidents can be reported to the Strand police on 021 854 9100 or 082 522 3236.

Pedestrian injured in peak-hour traffic DELIAH BRINKHUIS A pedestrian and driver of a Mazda sustained minor injuries in an accident on the N2 opposite the Gants Centre yesterday (Wednesday) at about 07:00. According to Constable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokesperson for the Strand Police, the driver swerved and tried to avoid the pedestrian, who was walking along the road. He, however, hit the man before colliding with a lamp post. With the impact the lamp post fell to the ground and the driver bumped his head against the windscreen. Mafuna says both men were admitted to the Helderberg Hospital. A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened.

The lamp post was hit after a pedestrian accident on the N2 near the Gants Centre.

The police’s Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) is investigating a rape after a 21-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted at her home in Temperance Town last Thursday at about 03:30. Police spokesperson Constable Vicky Kriel says the woman was assaulted at about 03:30 and had reported it to police soon afterwards. A 21-year-old man was arrested. Kriel says the woman has received counselling from the FCS. A 25-year-old man from Broadlands Park sustained multiple wounds in a shooting last Saturday. According to Strand Police spokesperson Constable Mbulelo Mafuna, the incident happened in Petunia Street at about 02:30 after an argument between two men ensued. Mafuna says the suspect fled and has not been arrested yet. A 31-year-old who is believed to have been an accomplice was arrested. A 65-year-old Gordon’s Bay woman was arrested last Thursday after police seized explosives and ammunition at a Burton Street house. Police spokesperson Constable Vicky Kriel says the arrest follows a tip-off from the public. The find includes nine smoke grenades, four military-issue rocket flares, one two-star instant light grenade, 31 pencil plax cartridges, one 20mm live round and 95 5.56mm rounds. The police’s explosive unit identified the explosives as those used for military purposes. Kriel says the woman was released after questioning as she “could not be connected to the seized items”. Three men appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of stolen property last Thursday. The case relates to an incident the previous Tuesday when the men were arrested on the N2 near De Beers Avenue. Strand Police spokesperson Constable Mbulelo Mafuna says the men (aged 28, 30 and 32) were driving a white Toyota Corolla at about 03:05 when they were spotted and pursued by police in Gordon’s Bay. According to Mafuna the men failed to pull over and a chase between them, police and security followed. They were finally brought to a halt on the N2 close to De Beers Avenue when their car collided with a security vehicle. Mufuna said a concrete manhole cover was found in the car, which may have been used in break-ins. A week before three businesses were targeted by thieves who smashed shop windows to gain entry. Anyone with information can phone Detective Sergeant Reginald May on 021 854 9100.

Holiday scam hits Gordon’s Bay DALEEN FOUCHÉ A visitor to Gordon’s Bay was duped into paying over R3 000 for a holiday home that does not exist. Nicole Fisher from Monte Vista and her family were geared for a relaxing Easter holiday in a large holiday home. But when they arrived at the house on Thursday, the renting agent was nowhere to be found. Fisher says she had found the holiday house on a website and had paid the R3 100 deposit, with the intention of paying the rest upon her arrival at the house. Her heart sank when she arrived at the address and the house looked nothing like the photo in the advertisement. She tried phoning the renting agent, but to no avail. Fisher then phoned the number of a painter advertised on a board in front of the house. Fisher says the painter, a friend of the owner, was with the owner at the time. Cassie Vorster, the owner of the house, then informed Fisher that she has been scammed and that it has happened before. Vorster told the DistrictMail that this was the second incident in two weeks. The previous weekend his 13-year-old son had been alone at home when a car filled with people arrived at the house. His son asked them what they wanted and they replied that they had rented the house for a weekend. Vorster says his son phoned him and he then rushed back to the house. “They asked my son if he knew the person who advertised the house, which of course he did not.” Vorster says both ads were listed on the same website by the same person. When

8 ABELIA STREET PRICES VALID TILL 12 APRIL 2015 OR WHILE STOCKS LAST

Vorster arrived at his house, more cars arrived and he heard that a group of about 17 young adults had paid a R2 000 deposit for the house. “We tried to help them make alternative arrangements.” He says up to now, both parties have understood the situation and under the circumstances, have handled it well. Vorster is, however, worried that on a next occasion someone may not handle the situation as well and may take it out on him or his family. Despite having fallen victim to a scam, Fisher was fortunate enough to find alternative accommodation for the Easter weekend, which turned out to be lovely. She has laid a charge against the “renting agent” who advertised the holiday house and warned people to be careful when booking holiday accommodation. “I always thought that these things happen to others, but will not happen to me.” Di Nosworthy, owner of Gordon’s Bay Tourist and Accommodation Centre says she talks to a Cape Town radio station twice a year about these types of scams. They happen all over and are devastating to people who are looking forward to a pleasant vacation. She advises that when booking holiday accommodation, people use a reputable company and do research on what average holiday accommodation prices are before booking a “good deal”. She says the best advice she can give people is that if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. She recommends that one way to find reliable accommodation is to only rent accommodation with a tourism grading. DistrictMail phoned the number listed with the ad for the holiday home several times, but only got a dial tone.

WALK FOR PEACE: A Peace Walk was held in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village this past Sunday. The walk, initi ated by the Kingdom Builders Ministries International congregation, was aimed at ridding the community of gangs and regain peace in the community, after a recent spate of violence that ended in two, fatal shootings in the village.

NARROW ESCAPE: The driver of a bakkie escaped serious injuries after the bakkie he was driving overturned on the N2 opposite the Somerset Mall at 16:50 last Tuesday. According to Western Cape Traf fic the man lost control of the bakkie, which resulted in it overturning. The vehicle landed on its wheels on the traffic island, and the driver was able to get out of it, unscathed. Traffic officers said no further details are available as the man undertook to report the incident to the police. PHOTO: TASEEM KHAN

‘‘

baie besig.

Noelle Collins and Alison Turner will be facilitating the support group which is open to all who are coping with bereavement and loss.

Bereavement support service provided by Helderberg Hospice Bereavement and loss are realities of life, challenges we all have to face at some stage. Helderberg Hospice provides a comprehensive bereavement support service which includes not only individual counselling, but also support within a group of others in similar situations. Alison Turner and Noelle Collins, both trained counsellors at Helderberg Hospice, have run bereavement groups for the past five years and report that a group provides a confidential and supportive environment in which to share and learn from one another. “We all grieve differently, but the very act of sharing our feelings in a non-pressurised way helps us to work through our experience of mourning,” explains Alison.

Noelle points out that loneliness is an integral part of loss and that the group context helps people to feel less alone and encourages them to develop new relationships. The group will meet for six weeks from Wednesday 15 April at the United Church, Andries Pretorius Street, Somerset West, from 14:00–15:30. This central venue has very kindly been donated for the purposes of the group. All those who have lost somebody close to them are welcome, whether this is a recent loss or not. A different topic will be discussed each week, followed by refreshments which cost R10 per session. For more information call Noelle Collins at 083 493 0914 or Alison Turner at 079 741 7097.

Locals know how to braai

Two local teams have qualified in the top 13 finalists for one of South Africa’s favourite reality cooking shows.

Season four of the Ultimate Braai Master will feature two local teams that include previous Braai Master contenders from Gordon’s Bay; Pieter Marais and John Grundlingh, better known as Weskus Anna’s. New to Braai Master are best friends from Somerset West, Claudia D’Ambrosio Grobler and braai buddy, Sacha Buchanan under the team name, Swagger Muffins. Grobler says she is ecstatic, nervous and excited all at the same time. “I will be leaving the family for a couple of months with hubby taking care of the kids.” Grobler’s big passions in life are cooking and entertaining and is now taking a chance on this show. “We are in it, to win it!” Grobler says she realised that everything that can be done on a stove can also be done on a fire. She describes her braai buddy, Sacha Buchanan, as a “happy camper” that will help her with the fire and will also take charge of deserts and sweets. “I see this as a good opportunity to get out there and try something new. Who knows, this may even lead to a new career!” Grobler is using every opportunity to practise and boasts that her Yellowtail and Snoek braai on Good Friday was superb. Grundlingh, from team Weskus Anna’s, says they are “ecstatic” about making it through to Season 4. “Both of us were in season 3 but with different partners. We have combined our braaiing skills and are much more determined than last year to take the title of the Ultimate Braai Master and go to Vegas for the World Barbeque Championships!” Grundlingh says they are trying different techniques and meats/fish to get the best results.

Pieter Marais (left) and John Grundlingh, better known as Weskus Anna’s. Marais says both his and Grundlingh’s previous teammates couldn’t enter this year, “so we decided to merge as team Weskus Anna’s and became the first team made up of previous Braai Masters to make it into the show two years in a row”. Marais says having been in the show before, they have an idea of what to expect. “Yet everything is due for a mix-up this year, so we are definitely not overconfident.” Preparationwise the Weskus Anna’s are braaiing as much as possible and reviewing their basics. “The main thing is to stay calm under the pressure they create and stick to your guns.” The winner of this season will walk away with the title of ultimate Braai Master,

R500 000, a brand new car and the chance to compete at the World Food Championships in Florida. The braai-adventure starts in the Karoo and from here teams will cover thousands of kilometres over 60 days, up the treacherous terrain of South Africa’s most outlandish, rugged and breath-taking territory. Contestants will need to make sure their stamina matches their braai skills, as they are expected to self-drive the country’s hidden back roads. Filming starts in May and the first episode of Ultimate Braai Master Season 4, Game On, will air on E.tv on Sunday 20 September, with the winning team announced in the final episode on Sunday 13 December.

Mail Vulgar acts on beach must stop The latest report of a middle-aged man exposing himself to a woman on Strand beach is unacceptable and must be stopped immediately. Lewd behaviour such as this cannot be tolerated and Helderberg residents, together with law enforcement officers, must stop it. The only way to halt these vulgar acts is to report them to the authorities as soon as possible, with a full accurate description of the perpetrator. A law enforcement officer has been assigned to patrol the beach, but he is alone and the area vast. To assist in apprehending these sex offenders, beach goers must be vigilant and report them to the SAPS as soon as possible.

Problem taxis ‘not unique to Somerset West’ – City ) They are a menace and so dangerous! Wish they could all be banned and have a private company that actually obeyed the laws and didn’t charge an arm and a leg. ) They also often ignore traffic lights and stop signs. They seldom stop in demarcated areas. ) They think they own the roads. They do what they want to. All the other drivers should just give way to them, but they get away with everything. ) I’ve complained to the City of Cape Town twice about taxis stopping between Links BP and Firmount Road in the morning. They forced cars to accelerate to get around them, and when turning out of Firmount right into Main, I have nearly been in two serious accidents. Golden Arrow buses are also using this Red Line area. It seems our traffic cops are more interested in hanging around Bossa Café and Nameless Pub dishing out fines when they should be sorting out actual dangerous situations. ) Mense in Somerset-Wes moet ophou vinger wys, want nie een van hulle verstaan hoe om ’n verkeersirkel te gebruik nie. Haal eers die splinter uit jou eie oë!

Lourens River vagrants situation is becoming a political hot potato Residents on the eastern side of Somerset West are by now acutely aware of the human tragedy that is playing itself out under the Lourens River Bridge. As a result of this an ecological disaster is well under way, and a cover for criminal activity is fast developing. Following numerous complaints regarding this blight on our town, a fact finding site visit accompanied by two councillors and three officials, was held on Monday afternoon 30 March. As we approached the river we were met by the unbearable stench of the fetid bush toilets. Filthy garbage heaps and excrement-soaked paper lay in profusion under the bridge, next to the walk way and on the river bank. Much of this was being blown down into the river. Washing hung over the concrete flood alleviation culvert pipes, and inside were the belongings of those who live there. The culvert pipes were completely blocked by bedding, clothes and rubbish, makingthemineffectivein the event of a flood. Winter is coming and floods are possible.

The river is consequently polluted and a potential health hazard is imminent. Cholera and other foul germs must be lurking in the long grass under the refuse. No-one is cleaning it up. The river protection committee, if it exists, is absent. The City has no money, the police arerecalcitrantandthewholesituation is a political hot potato. Yet the number of vagrants is increasing, and the only solution is to have them removed. But this is easier said than done. The good people of Somerset West continue to feed them, irresponsibly, which only aggravates the problem, as more and more refugees gather to the free fleshpots. Whilst we all feel desperately sorry for these lost souls, cash and food handed out by the public only serves to promote this demeaning lifestyle. Our democratic government has provided places for them to go to, and they should be encouraged to go there where they can be taken off the streets, rehabilitated and given meaningful work. Work which will help them attain a better life.

The City also has places, there is the EPWP and there are various private initiatives that give responsibly. Getting people off the streets also lowers the crime rate. Most agree that not all vagrants are criminals, but they can provide a useful cover for criminal activity. And crime has increased considerably over the last few years, causing some to look elsewhere for safe investments. No-one wants to see property prices fall and we are in danger of losing our competitive advantage both to tourism and much needed investment. A serious disaster is looming and the alarm bells are ringing. We need to act now. The City will do its bit regarding the potential flooding and clean up. But the townsfolk must also do their bit, by desisting from their irresponsible giving. Get involved in a constructive way that solves the problem. Otherwise you are part of the problem, and the problem will only grow bigger until our town is destroyed by rampant crime, disease and filth.

Please don’t dump your pets, bring them to AWS If you have pets that you are no longer able to care for, please remember Animal Welfare Helderberg in Gordon’s Bay is there to take your pets in and re-home them. We are finding that due to unforeseen circumstances and financial restraints, more families are no longer able to care for their pets. Sadly, many of these pets are given to domestic workers or gardeners living in townships. Many pets are also dumped in these areas or simply left along the side of the road to fend for themselves. These pets that are given away to people that are not able to care for them properly, end up suffering not only physically, as in lack of proper food and shelter, and medical care when ill, but also suffer emotionally and end up getting very depressed and sad.

The animals often end up being the victims of abuse and neglect. Ifananimalisgiventopeoplewho may not really want it, the animal ends up suffering too. Most animals that are given away are not sterilised, and sadly end up being used for breeding, which becomes an uncontrollable problem. AWS Helderberg will never ever turn a needy animal away, and will always welcome them with open arms. Surrendering an animal to our kennels (meaning handing in an unwanted pet) is a simple and easy process and will cost nothing. You will simply bring in the animal and fill in a form giving us as much information about the animal as possible. If you are sitting with a litter of puppies at home and can’t findhomesforthemall, pleasebring

them in to our kennels. We have a lovely set up at the kennels where both our dogs and our cats spend their days out in camps and are only kenneled at night. Our animals receive a lot of love and excellent care while with us, and when a family is interested in adopting from us, we always do a thorough home inspection to make sure the animal is going to a safe and loving family home. We have an excellent adoption rate and our on-site vets make sure all the animals are healthy, vaccinated and de-wormed. If you are not able to care for your pet anymore, please think of what is best for the animal. For any more info: Call Clare on 083 697 4759 or e-mail clarebez@gmail.com.

Sê jou sê ) The City of Cape Town apparently does not have the measly resources needed to keep Radloff Park free of litter. Where are our rates going? ) On Wednesday 1 April at 17:35 I drove in Main Road, Somerset West towards Checkers. Two women were sweeping the leaves. They did not pick them up but rather swept it into the stormwater drains. Most stormwater drains were filled with leaves. No wonder it is blocked. Is this what they get paid for when they work for City of Cape Town? ) I smell the foul smell of corruption in this toll-fee saga with Sanral. The fat cats are just gonna get richer and fatter. Eish! Welcome to South Africa, what a rip-off. Esther ) To the prude who objects to saving animal lives via car washes. Shame on you. (You) won’t even publish your name. How many lives have you saved? Julia Evans ) A big “thank you” to the branch manager and some of his staff at the Gordon’s Bay Pick n Pay for kindly assisting me on Easter Sunday. I went to exchange a 500 g box of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes bought in error at another branch, for a bigger box on special offer with a 500 g box Kellogg’s All Bran Flakes. I was helped in a swift and friendly manner and even got a few rands refund, which I happily spent on a packet of delicious in-store hot cross buns! Thank you once again. COMMUNITY NOTICE: ECOLOGICAL BURNING OF NATURAL VEGETATION ON SUMMERVALE LIFESTYLE ESTATE The Biodiversity Management Branch of the City of Cape Town in collaboration with Summervale Lifestyle Estate and CapeNature wishes to alert residents in the vicinity of Summervale in Gordon's Bay of the intended ecological burning of natural vegetation in April 2015 at Summervale situated in Lemoenboom street. The Biodiversity Management Branch and CapeNature will assist with the ecological burn of critically endangered Lourensford Alluvial Fynbos. This vegetation type is endemic to Cape Town but unfortunately over 90% of this vegetation type has been transformed, making the conservation target of 30% unattainable. The conservation of every last remnant, irrespective of size, is therefore critical. Due to the conservation significance of the site, the City's Biodiversity Management Branch along with CapeNature, the provincial conservation authority is assisting Summervale with the ecological management of the site. Fire plays an important role in the health of Fynbos - specialists believe that this vegetation type should burn on an 8 - 15 year fire cycle. This is done to limit the high woody component and allow the numerous geophytes (bulb species) to flourish. Optimum species richness is achieved by maintaining a healthy fire cycle, and supports the numerous red data plant species populations. The burning operation is scheduled for April 2015, weather permitting i.e. favourable wind direction and weather conditions conducive to conducting a safe burn. The burn is planned to take place over a period of one day. Application has been made to obtain the required burning permit from both City Health's Air Pollution Control Section and City Fire and Rescue Services and is valid for April/ September1 October and November 201 5 only. . Home owners neighbouring or close to the site are advised to close all windows and not to hang out any laundry while the burning is underway (which will be evident by smoke in the vicinity of Summervale), as a preventative measure against any smoke or ash that may result. It is necessary to burn in April 2015, for the following reasons: Fynbos must be burnt in summer / early autumn to simulate natural ecological fires. Winter fires will burn too cold and will cause the seed banks and bulbs of the critically endangered natural vegetation to be killed. Burning in April, as long as the first large rain events have not occurred as yet, is ideal as there is then a short period before the first winter rains occur, thus settling ash and dust and stimulating bulbs and seedlings to grow.

On Friday 20 March the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Health, Councillor Siyabulela Mamkeli, handed over certificates and trophies to the various City Health sub-districts for their outstanding work done across the city. The annual Public Health Care Awards took place at the Goodwood Civic Centre. The Eastern District that includes Strand, Gordon’s Bay, Somerset West, Kuils River, Macassar, Mfuleni, Blue Downs, Lwandle and Eerste River recieved a Gold Award Trophy and Certificate as the sub-district with the most effective Child Health Programme. Councillor Mamkeli lauded the good work done by all City Health officials in ensuring that service delivery remained a top priority. “These awards are a clear indication of the dedication of all staff working on the ground. “The statistics show that the interventions put in place by City Health are really effective in reducing the spread of diseases,” she commented.

FISH ’N CHIRPS

Galjoen catches at Kogel Bay, Rondeklippe This has been one of the most interesting and productive summer fishing seasons in many a year, but it is now sadly drawing to an end with winter slowly starting to set in. There are however still many species of fish such as kob, a few elf, yellowtail and geelbek in the Bay. They should remain here if the huge shoals of baitfish do not move, which will in turn depend on whether the water temperature does not drop too low. If the weather and water temperature stays reasonably warm, fishing should still be feasible right up till the middle of May. Belman and white steenbras catches should become more common during this time of the season. Hangklip and Betty’s Bay were good venues for one or two larger geelbek and medium size kob during the Easter weekend. Last week on Wednesday spinnermen had good catches of yellowtail of up to 14 kg at Rooikranz ledges. There were also reports of kob between 2 kg to 8 kg caught from Macassar beach near the Eerste River mouth. Although the water temperature was 15 °C, small boats and shore anglers caught a few medium size kob up to 4 kg, one elf of 2,2 kg and bags of galjoen, dassie and white stump. There were also reports of plenty of white stump and the odd elf taken around Langebaan on the West Coast during the weekend. Fishing in the Pearly Beach angling competition last Saturday, Ferdi Joubert and Hannes Smuts had 3 kob each. Regardt Potgieter had two galjoen of ± 2 kg each. It appears that holiday makers who fished in the competition took first, second and third places in the competition, which was more social than usual and which was held in good spirits. Earl Fenwick mentioned that last Thursday excellent catches of tunny were reported 18 miles off the Point near the Canyon. He also said that the water temperature dropped slightly and heard that there were also reports of small shoals of snoek on Wednesday and Thursday from Buffel’s Bay. Due to the high price of fuel and scarcity of snoek, the prices per fish were between R180 to R200 each. Strandfishermenreportedthatgaljoencatches at Kogel Bay and Rondeklippe were very encouraging during the weekend. Galjoen from 1,5 kg to 3 kg were caught with wonder worm as bait. All anglers wishing to change from the standard fishing line to braid should first consultexpertsfromawellestablishedfishingtackle store like Somerset Sports that stock better class of braids like Sufix 832. Helderberg teams to prove they belong in big league There has been much hype around the 2015 club rugby season with the Helderberg region having three clubs in the Super A League and two in the Super League B. Whether teams are good enough and the question of big contracts vs home-grown-talent will be answered once and for all. Helderberg vs Villagers (Brookside) Berge are depleted and struggling with numbers and quality, compared to previous seasons. Senior administrators have left and Quinton Daniels has been appointed as head coach. Villagers on the other hand are confident about their return to the top flight and have bolstered their squad. Season prediction: Bottom 3 finish. Match prediction: Helderberg to lose by 15 or more. St Georges vs Tygerberg (Gustrouw) The Lulus have a favourable home match to kick off their season. Reality will kick in against a Tygerberg team coached by Helderbergers Ricki Peterson and Brendal Brandt. The “Tiere” have signed Waleed Heins (former Boland) and Kenny Africa (former False Bay) to fight for a top-six finish and have surely targeted this match as a 5 pointer. St Georges could have pencilled in this match as one they could win. If Tygerberg weather the first 20 minutes, their experience should take control. St Georges with wily coach Wilbur Kraak, will however have few tricks up their sleeves. Season prediction: Bottom 3 finish. Match prediction: St Georges to lose by 10 or more. Sir Lowrians vs Belhar (Belhar) This could be one of the most interesting match-ups of the weekend. Both clubs are big

spenders opting for contracts above local talent. Belhar have settled in the top league over the past few seasons and their home ground has been good to them. Sir Lowrians have signed a few players worthy of playing in this league adding to their experienced core of players. On paper The Navy Train probably has the best squad of the Helderberg clubs, but it wont be enough in this tough league. Season prediction: Bottom 5 finish. Match prediction: Sir Lowrians to lose by 6 or more. Raithby vs Brackenfell (Raithby) The RU Boys had a great 2014 season and deserved promotion. Super League B is however a step too high. Brackenfell have always been one of the top 25 clubs in the Union and they should be playing Super A. Once the initial onslaught from the home team dies down, Brakkies will dominate and take charge. Season prediction: Bottom 2 finish. Match prediction: Raithby to lose by 10 or more. Macassar vs Kuils River (Macassar) Macassar did well with a young squad last season and I think they will do exeptionally well this year. With a good coaching team and maturing players they are sure to cause an upset or two. Kuils River will be itching to get back up to Super League A. Season Prediction: Top 6 finish. Match Prediction: Macassar to win by 5 or less. Strand United vs Langa (Abattoir) United under new coach Yunus Thomas have lost a few players to injuries already. With a large core of their league-winning u.20 team being promoted to the senior team, they are buzzing with excitement. Langa are al-

ways unpredictable but have not been consistentin recent seasons. Strand United along with Strand RFC carry the hopes of the Helderberg with any chance of seeing one of our clubs win a league this season. Season prediction: Top 3 finish. Match prediction: United to win by 6 or more. Strand RFC (bye weekend) Strand are not playing in the first two weeks. Strand were in contention for promotion last year and this year should be no different. They are capable of beating the big teams but fall short against the weaker ones. Season Prediction: Top 3 finish. All Saints vs Cloetesville (Stellenbosch) Saints have had a slow start to the season. With not much difference to last year’s squad and losing Warren Wilters on the coaching staff, they could end up struggling. Cloetesville want to go back to the name “Blakes RFC’’ and, guided by Christi Noble, will be difficult to beat in Stellenbosch. Season prediction: Won’t make play-offs. Strand Pioneers vs Blue Stars (K’muts) Pioneers are really struggling. Having not won a game last year, they surely cannot do any worse than that, player numbers being the big problem at this point. Blue Stars at home are virtually unbeatable in this league. Season Prediction: Ending last in league. Match Prediction: Pines to lose by 20 or more.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS AHEAD OF 2015 SEASON

Club rugby kicks off on Saturday LYNDON JULIUS The 2015 Western Province club rugby season kicks off this weekend amid great excitement, anticipation and expectations. This year, for the first time in WP club history, there will be three clubs from the Helderberg area representing our region in the WP Super League A group, namely Helderberg RFC, Sir Lowrians RFC and St. Georges RFC. They will be competing among the WP’s best placed 15 clubs. Helderberg have been playing in the Super League A for the past three seasons, with on-and-off seasons for the past ten years moving between Super League A and B during this time. Newcomers to this elite group, Sir Lowrians and St. Georges (Lulu Boys), will have their work cut out as they have to play against the likes of recently crowned Cell C Community Cup winners, Durbell RFC,

UCT RFC and Hamilton RFC. Sir Lowrians ended second in Super B in 2014 which allowed them automatic promotion to Super A whereas St. Georges had to face 13th placed Kuilsriver RFC in a promotion/relegation play-off match, which the Lulu Boys won thus ensuring their promotion to Super League A for the 2015 season. This Saturday Helderberg travel to Brookside for a rematch of a preseason friendly played only a month ago against Villager RFC with Villager claiming a 45-23 point victory. This time around it will however be a different scenario and I think Helderberg to win by 5 points. Sir Lowrians are away to Belhar at Accordion Park, in Belhar. Sir Lowrians will have their sights set on claiming the points as this surely will place their 2015 campaign on the right track. I again predict the local boys to win a close game given the wealth of experience in their charges. The Lulu Boys are the only side

at home in their first Super A fixture. They host Tygerberg in an all maroon affair at the Gustrouw sports grounds. The last time these two sides met was pre-unification. This will certainly be a tough one to call, however the hosts should win this one by three points. Given that these three teams are competing in the same league, we are set for three thrilling derby matches during the season. This will definitely be more than worth the wait when these three teams face off, not only for league points but more importantly, as it is in all derby matches, the bragging rights for a year, seeing that there is no traditional return fixture, given the newly adapted league structure with only one fixture between the 15 teams in the Super Leagues. Also read Taariq van der Ross’ column on page 19 regarding prediction for all the teams in the Helderberg this season.
