the magic of spring “It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want—oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!”

pring is my favorite season. I love to garden with my children and see their expressions when the bulbs we planted in the fall start to grow and bloom. Each year we go to our favorite garden center and decide on our color theme, which inevitably includes all the colors of the rainbow and choose our flowers and plants (plus the stinky mulch) and take it home to prepare for our day of gardening. This year was particularly special. My youngest daughter, covered in mud and holding a beautiful white flower said “Look Mommy, the magic of spring.” Only a child can remind us of exactly what things genuinely are or how ideally we should remember them. Afterwards we sat out on our stoop and ate Italian water ice while looking at our little patch of paradise in front of our home with deep satisfaction that we grew and planted this beautiful garden.

ooke’s Row was built in 1868 by Henry David Cooke.

Cooke was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to be Washington, DC’s first governor. Cooke was also known for being the President of the Georgetown Street Railroad Company, responsible for the creation of Washington’s first streetcar. How long have you been in the gardening/ landscape business?

Forever, but professionally, thirty-one years.

What is your favorite type of project to take on?

I love to work with clients who want to build a garden reflective of their personality and in context with their surroundings. I want my clients to enjoy being in their garden.

What are your tips for the first-time gardener?

Be observant and really look at and learn from your garden. If you start at the beginning and take the time to create healthy soil, good things will happen.

Kind of like slow dancing with your spouse.Take your time and the pay off is worth it.

When is it too late to start a spring garden?

It is never too late. A spring garden is developed all through the year. Spring bulbs for instance are not purchased and installed until the fall. One of the joys of gardening is the on-going process.

What is your favorite Washington DC garden?

Dumbarton Oaks in all seasons.

How often should roses be cut back?

Once in early March, lightly through the season to maintain shape.

Who are your biggest gardening influences?

Christopher Lloyd, Jaques Wirtz, Piet Oudolf.

What is the best fertilizer?

Aged compost or shredded leaves for your beds.

Fish emulsion for your pots. There are also many good quality organic products.

Where can a person see the best DC gardens/ landscapes this spring?

The Georgetown Garden Tour is a perfect way to see many types of gardens in a short period of time, most of which are created and maintained by the proud homeowner standing off to the side. A walk along the Canal is also pretty great.

What is your favorite thing about landscape gardening?

The integration of people and plants and how a garden can be both instructive and joyful.

What is one of your earliest gardening memories?

Planting yellow wax beans with my grandfather and weeding the flower beds.

What are your favorite gardening tools?

My pruners and the Internet.

What have you been reading lately?

Honey Bee Democracy. It may be a bit technical, but those little creatures sure are fascinating.

What is your idea of happiness?

Spring Forward

As an interior designer, the idea of decorating for a specific season has never been of particular interest to me.

What came to mind was more about a season that endures, a concept of a spring that lasts, that remains.

I don’t favor pastel colors, except when selecting macaroons at Ladurée in Paris. Decorating and architecture should not be temporary, at least in my little black book. Interior design isn’t fashion—rather, it’s all about storytelling.

The decorating of a home is about creating a balance between visual and physical comfort. What interior designers must do is help clients to develop their own design story. Therefore, I always search for a reference point, and inspiration for developing the design narrative.

It comes to mind, the yellow silk covered “Louis” chairs that belonged to the mother of a very sophisticated client of mine.

In the 1970’s, Sister Parish, one of Jackie Kennedy’s decorators, had used these chairs, upholstered in raw silk the color of bright spring Irises, in my client’s mother’s living room. Those chairs conversed with shimmering gold Fortuny curtains and with a small Matisse painting. You can well imagine what Mrs. Parish’s colors inspiration for the room was.

The chairs are now in my client’s bedroom. The Matisse was recently sold at auction, but the chairs are now part of a new design story. This story brings me to share with you a house where I used spring as the inspiration.

A dear and long time client asked me to help select a new house.

That was the easy part. Later, when it was time for decorating using a mix of pieces from previous homes and complementing them with new finds, she told me she favored fabrics with tones of ivory, salmon, soft blue and lavender. She knew it was not in my normal design vocabulary to go there.

I always rely on connecting the new with something that my clients are already attached to. Familiarity establishes trust. She had an Italian scagliola marble table top with stone inlays. It had the colors she wanted all floating in a field of black. Eureka!

I realized that this table top had the clue to the color scheme. It gave me the basis of how to balance the soft palette with contrast: dark and light elements would frame it all.

In the entry den, I placed a delicate, Empire-style chair. It would balance the visual weight of the limestone mantle and the chaise lounge.

Nearby in the entry hall, a painting of roses with spring colors blossoms over a modern console, and competes for attention with a surreal photograph of sky and clouds. The word TRANSCEND ominously announcing that this is not about grandmother’s spring porch.

The dining room is feminine with chairs skirted with a washedlinen in a soft blue jean color. Brown painted wall niches, the color of a milk chocolate, and the dark rosewood table, provide a masculine contrast to a Giacometti-inspired lantern.

But it is in the main living room where the inspiring scagliola tabletop finds a respectable place. Comfortably appointed with an impossibly long, tufted sofa of my own design, and a large ottoman and club chair, the living room speaks about my rule of visual and physical comfort. The Thai Buddha dominates the room, as a peaceful mediator for the different furniture styles and colors.

Understanding that this was part of her “visual comfort”, I took it as challenge. Any color, and for that matter any design decision, is always to be based on something that will fit the story.

Lessons learned. Springing forward is all about a fall back. What would Mrs. Parish say?

Looking at her art choices, it was clear to me that spring colors were in her DNA. Inspiration was then set.

Sprucing Up

for Spring • Lighten, or condense the number of different colors being used for a space. Sometimes there is too much to see and the freshness gives way to a somewhat cluttered look. Too many different colors within a limited space make for a quickly tiring look. A fresh new landscape on the walls is certainly a sure way to transition a space and make it fresh. Consider bright colors (Verdant Greens, Musty Corals, Golden Sumptuous Yellows, Lust Lavenders, and ‘Positive’ reds).

• Alternately, pastels create a fresh, crisp, clean, and (spruced-up) interior. Blushing tones of roses, muted mint tones, colors of a sunset, and tinted and softened horizon blues.

• Convert the trim to a white gloss or a chocolate gloss depending on the visual desired.

• Add some drama. You will be pleased. Look around, what makes you visually tired? Freshening can also be as easy as adding some gorgeous pieces to the collection.
