Frompoliticiansandprivatecitizensalike,racialanxietymultipliedwith questionsrangingfromdualloyalty—whetherJapaneseAmericanssupport theiradoptedhomelandortheirculturalhome—tooutrightaccusationsof activesnetworksof h-columnists,spies,andsaboteursthatcouldbelurking andworkingagainsttheUnitedStatesunforeseen
AsJapan’ssuccessionofmilitaryvictoriesinGuam,Malaya,andthePhilippines continuedthroughoutthebeginningof1942,America’s xationsonand delusionsaboutitsJapaneseAmericanneighbors,businesspartners,and schoolmatescrescendoed,reachingthehighesto ceintheland.Bowingto pressureandjusti cationbasedentirelyalongraciallines,PresidentFranklin Roosevelt,onFebruary19,1942,issuedExecutiveOrder9066,whichdirected theWarDepartmenttotransformvastswathesoftheUSWestCoastinto militaryareasfromwhichanyonecouldbeexcludedforessentiallyanyreason ByMayof1942,Washington,Oregon,andCalifornia’spopulationsofJapanese andJapaneseAmericancitizensandresidents—thetruetargetof9066—would begone:forcedtoleavetheirhomesandmostoftheirpossessionsbehindtobe transportedandincarceratedatoneof10incarcerationcentersdeepwithinthe Americaninterior,deniedanyappealandalldueprocessoflaw However, despitethesestokingoffearandracialprejudice,noneoftheseindividualsof JapaneseorJapaneseAmericanancestrywereeverconvictedofanycrime. Indeed,manyofthemwouldgoontoservetheircountryevena ertheirtrue allegiancehadbeenconsideredsosuspectthattheyhadbeenplacedbehind barbedwire



andCalifornia,haverecognizedFebruary19—thedayExecutiveOrder9066 wasissued—asaDayofRemembrance OnandaroundFebruary19,members oftheJapaneseAmericancommunitycometogethertoobserve,remember, andre ectonthegreatwrongthatwasdonetothemandtheirrelativesandthe resilienceanddeterminationtheydisplayedintheyearsofanddecades followingWorldWarII.
