Frompoliticiansandprivatecitizensalike,racialanxietymultipliedwith questionsrangingfromdualloyalty—whetherJapaneseAmericanssupport theiradoptedhomelandortheirculturalhome—tooutrightaccusationsof activesnetworksofh-columnists,spies,andsaboteursthatcouldbelurking andworkingagainsttheUnitedStatesunforeseen

AsJapan’ssuccessionofmilitaryvictoriesinGuam,Malaya,andthePhilippines continuedthroughoutthebeginningof1942,America’sxationsonand delusionsaboutitsJapaneseAmericanneighbors,businesspartners,and schoolmatescrescendoed,reachingthehighestoceintheland.Bowingto pressureandjusticationbasedentirelyalongraciallines,PresidentFranklin Roosevelt,onFebruary19,1942,issuedExecutiveOrder9066,whichdirected theWarDepartmenttotransformvastswathesoftheUSWestCoastinto militaryareasfromwhichanyonecouldbeexcludedforessentiallyanyreason ByMayof1942,Washington,Oregon,andCalifornia’spopulationsofJapanese andJapaneseAmericancitizensandresidents—thetruetargetof9066—would begone:forcedtoleavetheirhomesandmostoftheirpossessionsbehindtobe transportedandincarceratedatoneof10incarcerationcentersdeepwithinthe Americaninterior,deniedanyappealandalldueprocessoflaw However, despitethesestokingoffearandracialprejudice,noneoftheseindividualsof JapaneseorJapaneseAmericanancestrywereeverconvictedofanycrime. Indeed,manyofthemwouldgoontoservetheircountryevenaertheirtrue allegiancehadbeenconsideredsosuspectthattheyhadbeenplacedbehind barbedwire
