Dear Neighbours

Be careful what you wish for?

O THE ELECTIONS are behind us and what a difference the televised discussions made to the run in.

NYONE WHO has ever experienced diversity will know that it amplifies your perception of your surrounds. Suddenly everything is in sharp focus. Noone wants to put in that position to have clarity but on the other hand it is often the case that our senses become dulled with complacency and routine. I wonder how many of you reading this take a moment to count your blessings. It is very true to say that the best things in life are free.

It seemed that through the medium of television we all became more connected to the future of our country; with the furore surrounding the expenses it could have been expected that many people would be turned off politics but instead the will of the people was exercised. Hopefully with this newfound connection nationally and the agreements that have been reached between the major parties, the connection can filter through to the regional and local level.

We are told that with just 30 minutes of exercise a day and by that they mean raising your heart rate we can cut the risk of ill health. There can’t be many who don’t equate exercise with health but there are countless who will never consider slotting it into their day.

If we all make the effort to participate and fight to improve life locally our communities can flourish and so can the country. Here’s to the people! Best Wishes Claire xx

Being pro-active and not re-active is very, very important when it comes to our health. We need to embrace who we are and live life to the full. We can all take care of ourselves in small ways and once we begin to respect our bodies we will become more energised and adapt a more positive and optimistic attitude. Tell yourself off if you find yourself behaving in a grown-up way. Lighten up and the world around you will lighten up too. Seeing humour in many situations defuses tension. With a basket of shopping I collided with a fellow shopper. Instantly apologetic, my fellow shoppers face was frozen. How very sad. I reminded myself that the combination of my shopping speed and basket was perhaps a bad mix but all the same my fellow shopper had a look of someone detached. How many of us have offered a spontaneous gesture to be greeted by well; nothing.

I love to write things down. My scribbles are always in full so I use an Artists pads with ring binders at the top. It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t have something to plan. It’s about being alive and grabbing every opportunity that comes my way. My husband now believes this works and cautions ‘be careful what you wish for’. Not a bit of it. I say life can never be too eventful. Carol Westmorland

OSPICE AT HOME CARLISLE and North Lakeland (Hospice at Home) is the local Charity providing nursing care at home to the terminally ill and supporting their carers. The service has cared for over 3,000 patients from Kirkby Stephen to the Scottish Borders and from Alston to Silloth. There are only 15 independent Hospice at Home charities in the whole of England and here in Cumbria we are lucky enough to have two such services.

John Stevenson MP for Carlisle and

District Councillor for Dalston Ward. Home is such a special place for all of us and by providing this essential service, Hospice at Home enables people to choose not only to die at home, but importantly also to continue to live at home during their terminal illness. All care is provided free of charge and as far as possible is tailored to the individual needs of the patient and their carer. Hospice at Home is able to offer nursing and emotional support to individuals, their relatives and carers, bereavement support including both pre and post bereavement and complementary therapies for the individual and their relative or carer.

The majority of patients are referred to the service by their GP or a District Nurse, however, the patient or their family can also refer by contacting the Nursing Service on 01228 603208.

In order to maintain the service the Charity Team work to raise the money required to run the service. A grant is received from the Primary Care Trust which covers approximately 22% of the costs and the remainder £9,500 per week has to be raised from the local community. Throughout the year a full programme of events are organised and if you would like to hear more about this work, please call 01768 210719 or go to www.hospiceathome.co.uk Please mention The Carleton when responding to adverts

Police Page Do You Know What Your Child Is Doing Online?

T

HIS MONTH we are going to address the issue of protecting your children or young family members when using the internet. There have been several high profile cases recently of young people being groomed online. In March 2010, Peter Chapman was jailed for life, for the kidnap, rape and murder of Ashleigh Hall. Chapman, aged 33 and originally from Teeside, used the social networking website Facebook to groom Ashleigh, by posing as a teenager.

Although the above is an extreme example, there is a real chance that young people will encounter problems on a lower scale, such as cyberbullying, ‘SPAM’ and ‘SPIM’. ‘SPAM’ being junk mail sent online usually from undesirable sources, and ‘SPIM’ being ‘SPAM’ sent via instant messaging. I know what you’re thinking, this all sounds rather confusing. There is also a plethora of material online which is not suitable for children, such as

offensive, indecent and violent websites. The internet is global and mostly unregulated. Despite all the above, it is a common occurrence for young children to have unsupervised internet access in their own homes, without any limits on what they can view or who they can communicate with. Children as young as 5, now have Facebook accounts.

A few facts …. (12-15 yr olds):

82% have internet access at home

60% use it on their own (78% have a webcam) Facebook now has 175 million users (bigger than Russia).

Here are our top ten tips to protect you and your children online:

1. Ensure children only the use the internet in a communal room of the house. Ideally have the computer located in the lounge, where you can keep a close eye on what they are doing.

2 Activate the parental controls on your computer, to limit the websites that can be accessed, and also prevent email being sent from undesirable sources. 3 Ensure that your computer has antivirus software, and keep it up to date. 4 For all password controlled websites and email accounts used by your children, ensure that you know the password and monitor the accounts in question.

6 Make sure your child understands that they shouldn't give out personal information to people they meet online. Stress that although they may think of them as friends, they are complete strangers.

7 Look out for personality changes that may signal your child is being bullied or abused. These can include loss of confidence, withdrawal from family life, anxiety and argumentativeness. 8 Check the history of websites your child has visited, and be explicit that you'll do this regularly. If the history has been deleted, always ask them why. 9 Limit the time your child spends online, set reasonable daily boundaries for social use.

10 Learn about the internet yourself, so you are better aware the dangers it brings. PC1908 Lewis Powell

With the help of other Federation officials the plans began to be put in place for a world tournament which would involve all of the federations.

It was on the 26th May that the World Cup was born in its original form as the Jules Rimet Cup. With Uruguay chosen as host (a result of their previous outstanding Olympic history) and a further five other European countries an earlier date of 1929 decided upon.

Serving Suggestions:

At the moment we are also selling tickets to win a football signed by the full Manchester United squad this season. All proceeds going to Eden Valley Hospice so come in and get yours as I am sure you will agree what a fantastic cause it is.

HERE WOULD have been no such thing as the World Cup had it not been for Jules Rimet who took up the presidency of the World Football Federation in 1921. It was Rimet who in 1926 first thought of creating the greatest event in football. His enthusiasm and positive influence is realised through his famous words, "Soccer could reinforce the ideals of a permanent and real peace". With this idea and a focus upon international brotherhood he strove to create an international event that would make no discrimination on the grounds of professional or amateur status.

Nothing ever runs as smoothly as planned and it wasn’t until the 13th July 1930 that

The final was contested between Uruguay and Argentina and it was Uruguay, the hosts, who ended up victors in an event that was to form the beginning of a long and popular World Cup history. In fact so popular had the event become that future events would require qualifying rounds and today its reputation continues to grow.

UE TO INCREASES in life expectancy and a decline in birth rates since the "baby boomer" generation were born we continue to live in an aging society. In 2007 the number of Britons aged 65 and over exceeded the number under 16 for the first time.*

The generation of people now approaching retirement have a completely different attitude and approach to life than the generations before them. They are comfortable with the idea of servicing debt throughout their working life and are used to having luxuries that their parents only dreamed of. This generation has also been affected by the well-documented problems suffered by pension schemes.

Equity release will be a focal part of financial planning for this generation, whether to maintain the lifestyle they were accustomed to before retirement or to help them manage their debts and income shortfalls. What is equity release?

Put simply equity release allows you to release tax-free cash from your home to boost your finances in retirement, without the need to move. There are three different types of equity release products: 1.

Lifetime Mortgage

A lifetime mortgage is a form of equity release scheme where a loan is secured against your property to provide you with a tax free cash lump sum or a regular income to spend as you wish, typically with no monthly repayments to meet.

The Election. (Dalston ward)

I write this following the Parliamentary and Local elections. Steve Tweedie had moved into Eden District and stood down at the end of his term of office. We offered a strong candidate in John Wyllie for the vacant seat, but in the event, it went to the Conservatives. This was not unexpected, as the local election coincided with the Parliamentary election. This produced an increase from 47% to 75% of the electorate voting compared to the last District Council election in 2008. The estates at Carleton voted strongly for us. Although our actual tally increased, the bulk of this additional vote went to Labour and particularly the Conservatives on the back of their strong and effective campaign.

As the agent, I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the 1241 Dalston residents who voted Liberal Democrat, a figure which in a purely local election we would have expected to have had a different outcome. We accept the result with good grace and I look forward to continue working with my two Conservative ward Councillor colleagues in the best interests of Dalston ward.

Thank You from John Wyllie.

I thoroughly enjoyed canvassing the estates at Carleton and the opportunity of speaking with residents across the whole ward. I was met with courtesy on the doorsteps and am encouraged to offer myself again at the John Wyllie next opportunity. There are serious issues that the Local Authority need to address which we highlighted in our campaign leaflets. I am also attracted by the Community politics that Trevor and the Lib Dem Group practice. My ambition is to be elected and become part of this. As an accountant, it was interesting to compare our result with previous years under similar circumstances. Despite the outcome, I am encouraged by the upward trend of our core vote. Thank you for your support.

We are running this service for the youngsters f r o m Carleton Grange a n d Parklands Village who live outside the catchment area for Caldew School and do not qualify for free school transport. It will continue to the end of the current school year in summer. By then I anticipate that we will have been able to come to some arrangement with the Education Authority to run it as a regular service at a competitive cost to the parents.

In the meantime I would welcome any additional passengers on the pilot service. It leaves the bus stop opposite the old Cavray site on London Road, goes via Cumwhinton Road on to the estates and then via Cumwhinton to Dalston. It arrives at the school at around 8.20am. It returns by the same route. Interested? Then contact me on 523923 or 817065 or e-mail me as below. Issues before the Council.

Renaissance initiative. This has been one of the most regular issues raised by you on the doorstep during our election campaign. We see here a serious democratic deficit and a lack of progress given that it has had an investment of almost £6M in recent years. It has been based on unrealistic expectations of the struggling University of Cumbria. We are pressing for a fundamental change of direction here.

Sands Development. This scheme appears to be taking precedence over The City Centre, and Caldewgate, Botchergate, which are the gateways to the city and in dire need of regeneration. I support the Superstore application in Caldewgate. This £40M project would kickstart the re-development of that area,. The Lonsdale has been raised by residents across Carlisle. We are developing our ideas on this and note that Carlisle’s new MP is promoting a theatre for Carlisle. I welcome your views on these or any other topics affecting Carlisle. Cllr Trevor Allison,

People fill up with the wrong fuel quite frequently; it can range from 2 to 5 per week. This is of course an expensive mistake to make so always make sure you use the right pump!

OFFERING PLAY AND LEARNING IN A CARING HOME SETTING.

Monday - Friday full or part time.

Kevin Keegan:

The good news for Nigeria is that they’re two-nil down very early in the game.

Brian Clough:

I wouldn’t say I’m the best manager but I’m in the top one.

“ ” I had an argument with a player we would sit down for twenty minutes, If “ talk about it and then decide I was right!” “The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years They say Rome wasn’t built in a day, but I wasn’t on that particular job.

Walk on water? I know most people out there will be saying that instead of walking on it, I should have taken more of it with my drinks. They are absolutely right Football hooligans – well, there are 92 club chairmen for a start.

Ian Rush:

I couldn’t settle in Italy – it was like living in a foreign country.

John Lambie:

Hospice at Home

It took a lot of bottle for Tony to own up . (on the Arsenal captain’s confession to alcoholism)

Dear Neighbours

by Carol Westmorland
