Dear Neighbours "BRRR, it’s been a bit nippy out. Few people will have imagined when they wished for a traditional white Christmas that the country would have to face a spell of snow which has transformed out landscape for weeks. Should the moral be “be careful what you wish for, you might just get it” or should we look to the old saying “every cloud has a silver lining”. Whilst the news was full of the negative effects of all the snow, perhaps we should “make hay whilst the sun shines” or should that be “make snowmen whilst the snow falls”. There probably won’t be another spell like this for years before were back to the mundane rain. Perhaps it wouldn’t hurt if maybe just maybe we took our cue from the kids, “turned our frowns, upside down” and realised if life throws down snowstorm – make a snowball! Have a great 2010! I FOLKS may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year, I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas, only 11 months until it all starts again!!! Now I have put that scary thought back into your heads let me tell you what has been going on since our last edition.

Bus Times

With regards to the on-going Anti social behaviour on Watermans Walk, we have since done a ‘Streetsafe’ handing out leaflets and giving advice on security of the homes and property, also on the disposal of personal details (bank statements etc).

Whilst every effort is made to check that these times are accurate at print time, we cannot accept responsibility for errors or later changes.

With this also being one of our priority areas, patrols have been increased on an evening as this is when most of the reported problems are occurring. However, we will continue to monitor this over the next few weeks. Please do not feel that you can’t call the police if you are experiencing problems, a few people have asked if this effects the value of their homes on selling them, this is by no means correct – if you feel more comfortable calling in anonymously please do so. All reports to police are confidential. Neighbourhood policing week is coming up – during the February half term. During this week we are focusing on our ‘Speedwatch’ campaign. We are still interested in volunteers to help us both with the radar gun and the speed indication device. We are looking to replace the speed indication device on Garlands Road therefore would require somebody to be responsible for this for anywhere between 1-3months by bringing it in each evening, re-charging and putting it back out each morning.

COTBY BABY AND TODDLER GROUP is a relatively new group, which started in September 2009. It is several years since Scotby has previously had a Toddler group and the new group is proving to be very popular with local families. It is an ideal place to meet other families with small children.

The group has just been awarded a grant from the Cumbria Children’s Trust, which they are delighted about. The money will be invested in resources, which will allow the group to provide a wider range of activities for the children. The cost of each session is: £1.50 per family For more information please contact: Karen Smith on 01228 819161 or Dawn Crowther on: 01228 562434

New Year's Day Prayer for One and All Dear Lord So far this year I've done well.

The sessions run during term time on Friday mornings from 9.15a.m – 11.00a.m at Scotby Village Hall. It is aimed at babies and toddlers from 0-3 years. The group welcomes: Mums, Dads, Grandparents and carers along with their children, for a fun session of play, craft activities, stories and songs.

I haven't gossiped, I haven't lost my temper, I haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent. I'm very thankful for that. But in a few minutes, Lord, I'm going to get out of bed, and from then on I'm probably going to need a lot more help. Amen

Ten Indications of a New Year Hangover 1. 2. 3.

You get it into your head that chirping birds are the Devil's pets. Trying to gain control of the situation, you continue to tell your room to "Stay still." Looking at yourself in the mirror induces the same reaction as drinking a glass of fresh paint. 4. The bathroom reminds you of the fairground cry, "Step right up and give it whirl!" 5. You'd rather chew tacks than be exposed to sunlight. 6. You set aside an entire afternoon to spend some quality time with your toilet. 7. You replace the traditional praying on your knees with the more feasible praying in a fetal position. 8. Your catch phrase is, "Never again." 9. You could purchase a new fridge on the proceeds from recycling the bottles around your bed. 10. Your new response to "Good morning," is "Be quiet!"

Financial Planning

‘A whole new body’! In ten sessions you will feel the “difference; in twenty you will see the difference; and in thirty you will have a whole new body ...said Joseph Pilates.

By Darren Turnbull CFP,DMS,MCIBS Certified Financial Planner 01228 597986 dturnbull@financialconcepts.co.uk http://www.financialconcepts.co.uk

H

Your Future - Plan It

OW TRUE. I really believe in Pilates; it is the best thing I have ever done to my body.

Now into its 80th year Pilate’s definition of physical fitness was "the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure. Everything should be smooth, like a cat [The exercises are done lying, sitting, kneeling, etc]... to avoid excess strain... natural movements ... with the emphasis on doing and being". It’s all about strengthening the muscle then stretching it out. Not complicated or extreme. Nothing required except for a small amount of space and a mat and a simple want to do something ‘for you’. Gravity supplies the body with its own resistance while on the mat with comparatively few repetitions. The movements look so easy. But that is the very point. We favour the big muscle groups and forget to use the smaller muscles the ones that hold our posture together. They forget their job. It’s those little muscles that Pilates wakes up. “Physical fitness is the first requisite for happiness” JOSEPH PILATES

Now more than ever we recognise the benefits of Financial Planning and the role of professional financial planners.

What is Financial Planning? Financial Planning is the process of developing strategies to help you manage your financial affairs so you can build wealth, enjoy life and achieve financial security. Whether this is taking some simple steps yourself or seeking professional help. Financial Planning is an effective way of meeting your life ambitions without having to worry about your finances. What are Financial Planners? The role of a qualified professional financial planner is to look at all aspects of your lifestyle. They are able to offer a multi- disciplinary approach to your lifestyle planning drawing upon the highest level of professional qualifications in Financial Planning law and Accountancy. There are many considerations to make when choosing a financial planner to work with, but one of the main considerations is that they provide suitable advice and solutions in a clear manner that you understand and that the advice is not influenced by sales or remuneration targets. Another important consideration is that you choose a financial planner you can trust and genuinely has your best interests at heart. 5 Questions to Ask What experience do they have?

• Find out how long the planner has been in practice and the types of client that they have worked with. Make sure that the planner has the experience to offer you true lifestyle planning rather than just selling products. In lifestyle planning experience and high level qualifications should go hand in hand. What are Their qualifications? • The term financial planner is used by any financial advisers and you should investigate further rather than taking such a claim at face value. Ask the planner what qualifies him to offer lifestyle planning and whether he is qualified as a Certified Financial planner CM. Employing a certified financial planner CM allows you to relax in the knowledge that your chosen adviser is qualified to a very high standard, has signed up to a rigorous code of conduct and undertakes regu-

What Services do they Offer? • A professionally qualified Lifestyle Planner specialises in helping their clients identify, articulate and achieve their lifestyle goals. This can only be done through an in depth examination of a clients current circumstances and future aspirations and is typically achieved through analysis of income and expenditure patterns. Planners may specialise in Personal or Business Financial Planning and are authorised by the Financial Services Authority to provide such investment advice as may be needed to implement the clients lifestyle financial Plan. No products will be recommended however unless essential to the achievement of a clients lifestyle planning needs. Will they be the only person working with me?

IRST OF ALL I would like to say a massive thank you to all our customers over the festive period. We have had some cracking nights and have loved serving each and everyone of you and appreciate your support of the pub. I am sure any of you who were here and managed to squeeze in the pub on New Year’s Eve will have enjoyed the “Dirty Dukes” followed by Les. Secondly I would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year and hope 2010 is all everyone wants it to be.

We have a little bit of a refurb taking place as I write this which will be all finished by the time you read this, so a hectic start to the new year for us here as well. We are having How will I pay for their services? all the upholstery replaced which will • By the end of 2012 commission payments to smarten up the whole pub. Financial Advisers are likely to be phased out. • The Financial Planner may work with you themselves and/or have others in the office who assist them. You may want to meet everybody who will be working with you.

Most Lifestyle Financial Planners are therefore now operating on a fee based business model. For a full lifestyle planning service charges are usually made for preparation of a formal Financial Plan, Implementation of any investments required to achieve the plans outcomes and in respect of ongoing review and revision of the plan. Your chosen Lifestyle planner should give you written details of such charges before you formally engage in their services. To help you decide whether lifestyle planning is appropriate for you many planners conduct an initial consultation free of charge. With the recent downturn we believe that people have been forced to become more focused on their income and expenditure and take responsibility for their finances. People have been scared and it is important that we harness that new found conservatism and when things start to pick up which has been in evidence recently the savings they have made can be made to work to their advantage.

As I sit and write this I look out the window and it’s white as far as I can see, it reminds me of when I used to drink the Wheatsheaf a good few years ago sitting round the log fire with a bowl of soup watching the football on the TV. We get a great following in now for the sport on the TV as have two sky boxes and new 48inch TV and sky HD. Things have changed a bit since I used to watch in here but HD is definitely a change for the better.

I would like to include other people’s memories from the Wheatsheaf from the past in this article each issue so please contact me with any stories or memories you may have; send to: grahamdwatt@hotmail.co.uk I hope to see you all in the pub this month were we have some fantastic homemade specials, we use nothing but local produce where possible and everything is made onsite. Thank you again and see you all soon Graham

For Eddie it all began in 1988 when he applied for his Scout Leaders Warrant; at the age of 18 he became one of the areas youngest Scout Leaders in Carlisle. Four years later he formed a new Venture Scout Unit, the predecessor to t o d a y ’ s Explorer Scouts (for 14 to 18 year olds).

Break the chocolate into pieces and melt in a bowl over simmering water (don't let the chocolate get too hot or it will split) Warm gently the cream then pour into the chocolate mix. Place an 8" cake ring on a flat plate. Pour in the mixture and set in the fridge for 4 hours. Remove the cake from the ring and dust with cocoa powder. Use a hot knife to portion up the slices and serve onto plate. Serve with a shot of damson gin and a dollop of crème fraiche.

Contrary to the portrayal of teens in the contemporary press, there is something for them to do and in Carlisle they are doing it in ever increasing numbers. Eddie, ever dismissive of the press which still continues to label Scouting with its old imagery, has (alongside Scouting) embraced the social, personal and community changes of the 21st Century. With the support of his family; Kelly his wife and his sons, 4 year old Finley and 2 year old Mason who can regularly be seen with him at Explorer Scout activities Eddie continues to provide almost daily contact with his group and encourages Scouting in all its many formats. “Scouting has given me so much and it can give the same to everyone . It’s all about the adventure, fun and challenge. If those three ingredients are there we can’t go wrong”. With 21 years of Scouting behind him not only is he the leader of the fastest growing Explorer Scout Unit but he is also Manager of the District Campsite at Ratlingate, he is an active trustee of the District Scout Executive Committee and he is also County Scout Media Development Manager. Finding time to utilise all those social networking tools popular today he is helping to keep Scouting at the cutting edge of contemporary culture. With tools such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook, his Explorer Scouts have an extensive and popular web presence (www.Ayers ExplorerScouts.org).

No other organisation offers such a range of challenging or exciting activities... Researching these sites it is possible to stumble across recent activities such as Coasteering, campaigning for young people at the Conservative Party Conference, hosting Finnish & Texan Scouts, Ghyll Scrambling and taking on the Krypton Factor Assault Course. When one Explorer Scout was asked online; how would your life be different if Eddie wasn’t in it? He answered “It would be massively different; it would be less extreme for one” Having raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities he received a community

service award from Rotary International in 1997 for “helping and initiating recreational, social and educational activities for young people in the local community, and

in particular his service to Scouting”. He has seen hundreds of teens pass through his group and he continues to gain in the same way his unit does. “We work together at our activities and if we didn’t gain positively from the outcomes we wouldn’t do it. Scouting offers adults a social life with a purpose, and as a Leader the chance to gain new skills, and have fun whilst helping other people.” Together they have recently supported the Eden Valley Hospice and only last week completed a 100 mile cycle to raise money for Watchtree Wheelers to provide adapted bikes for elderly, disadvantaged & disabled cycle users. For Eddie the extreme activities and enjoyment will keep on coming, as will the eager teens. “There are so many but it’s difficult to turn anyone away, knowing what they will miss out on”. For the good of our communities and for the good of our children it is to people like Eddie and the other unsung Scout Leaders we owe thanks for the time they unselfishly devote. If you would like to take part in the adventure, whether as an active member or even as adult helper then visit www. reiversdistrict.org to see where your nearest group is.

Caldew Calling

Spotlight on a local business Picture U This months spotlight is on Picture U Studio, owner Andrew Coleman provides us with a little insight into the running of his local business. Have you always been a professional photographer? No, I was a keen amateur for many years, since I was a child in fact. So why the jump into running your own business? I have always wanted to run a business and seeing as I’ve done and enjoyed photography for years it seemed like a logical step What can you tell us about a regular day? I spend a large part of the day editing photos on the computer, stopping to attend to my customers that come in to either preview their pictures and/or enquire about weddings etc. How important is the internet to your business? The internet is very important as a lot of my communication relies upon e-mail, I also get enquires in through my website. I probably wouldn’t have been anywhere near as busy as I am now without it What advice do you have for someone thinking of starting up their own business? Think it through thoroughly, get lots of advice, sit

the valuable courses ran by the chamber of commerce/business link etc, go out and speak to small business owner like me and see if it’s for you. A lot of people I spoke to said don’t do it, but its right for some and not for others. Just be aware of exactly what you’re going into. What do you enjoy most about your job? The day to day running can be quite be quite stressful and challenging in the busy periods, trying to find enough money to pay bills can be a worry too, so it’s not all a bed of roses, but the best bits are having no boss, doing something I enjoy for a living, meeting and working with new people and seeing people delighted with their pictures. We provided an article on you when you first opened, how has life changed since then? It is somewhat different now! Back in the opening days I was very quiet and spent a lot of my days making use of the BBC iplayer, and YouTube, I couldn’t even dream of doing this now, there seems to be loads to do every day. I regularly end up staying back at night, and also bringing work home to keep me going till bed time. What’s the secret behind a great photograph? Now there’s a question, as well as usually following a few photographic rules, you need a good natural eye for composition through the viewfinder, a good technical knowledge of your camera and equipment. A stupidly expensive

camera helps but is not as important as people think. What camera would you recommend to a keen amateur photographer? It depends how keen, If they’re looking for an SLR it’s a straight choice between the 2 market leaders Canon and Nikon, The picture qualities are so close now it comes down to the extra features, I have chosen Nikon simply because they are faster, enabling me to capture that moment easier. They have exceptional low light capabilities and are much more ergonomic. If you’re looking for a compact then again I would go for Canon or Nikon. Canon do seem to have the edge in picture quality in this market however it is close, and again I think it comes down to features that each individual wants from there camera. Being responsible for your business, is it difficult to switch off once the doors to the store have been locked? Yes, I’m normally quite good at switching off from things, but when your livelihood depends upon it, in the busy times there is work to take home so it’s physically impossible to switch off. When it’s quiet I’m sat trying to work out the next strategy to generate new business, and thinking about things like shop layout, window displays, DIY that’s needed etc Why should people choose Picture U? Because we’re very customer and people orientated, we’re friendly and helpful. We bend over continued on page 7

The Carleton

Hello and a very happy New Year – I hope that you all had a smashing Christmas and you have managed to relax, and unwind for a few days at least. Many people in the area suffered at the hands of localised flooding and then came the snow and ice! Many thanks to those residents in the Garlands area who contacted me to address such issues – particularly with the localised flooding and the damage caused by the water in the road by Sycamore Lane area. Prior to the event I had been in touch with both Capita and officers at the District Council advising of the impending bad weather to come – I find the long range farming forecast to be of great use – as I had reported issues of leaf blocked drains, poor drainage around the site etc. I was able to pass my correspondence to the Clerk of the Parish Council for St Cuthbert’s Without, which serves the Garlands area. Over the Christmas period we had the pleasure of seeing the snow but of course it comes tinged with such danger for many, as it turns to slippery ice, making it very difficult for people to walk and drive. I have contacted Story Construction and the District Council for both grit bins and rock salt to be made available at the Garlands sites – unfortunately the main roads will take priority – particularly as Carlisle has seen more wintry weather than it would normally, but this and the adoption of the estates will be most prevalent for me again this coming year and I will continue to correspond/report with the Parish Council regarding these matters and relate any developments to residents via my newsletters. I am very pleased to announce that a friend and colleague will be standing for the local elections in May – I know – I can hear you all saying but that is months away – but I have been constantly looking to find a person who will truly work and have your best interests at heart, a person who will respond to your requests and do their best for you.

life), and his profession is that of Property and Building Consultant. He has extensive experience in Building Surveying, Construction and Maintenance Management of all types of Commercial, Industrial, Historic and Domestic Buildings plus a high degree of knowledge of Building Services. I am particularly pleased that Bryan has decided to stand for election as he comes very highly qualified to deal with not only the issues I have been describing above, but because he is no stranger to any of the Parish Councils, he has an intensive knowledge of our whole ward and surrounding county area and will indulge his passions for planning and the environment at every available opportunity on your behalf. Bryan attends planning meetings regularly at the District Council and has been a Parish Councillor for many years, thus making him more than familiar with Local Government procedures. His skills and contacts are already established and if elected he will serve you very well. As you all know I came to this work with little experience and have had to learn while ‘doing the job’. I think you also know that I strongly believe that it is important to elect those to Local Government who can bring with them knowledge and expertise and who are prepared to hold those in Local Government office and Leadership to account for their actions or the lack of it. Here then, is such a man, ready, willing and able. If you wish to meet with him please contact me on 07927 565267 or email via nicolac@carlisle.gov.uk and I can arrange for a visit. Thank you.

As he was wobbling along, he was stopped by a policeman. 'What are you doing out here at four o'clock in the morning?' asked the police officer. 'I'm on my way to a lecture,' answered Roger. 'And who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at this time on New Year's Eve?' enquired the constable sarcastically.

We write this Newsletter in early January, having just returned from the Christmas break, when the weather, as you will recall, was exceptionally cold and with snow. This caused real difficulties for all local authorities including Cumbria. As County Councillor, for the Dalston division, Trevor supported our Group’s representations at the County Council meeting, reminding them that winter maintenance had been raised last year with recommendations to improve the programme of gritting and winter maintenance.

But what is STYLE? - Is it that little black dress? Perhaps if accessorised with ropes of pearls, gloves, or even shades or a classic pair of jeans worn with a brilliant white T, a well cut jacket and a pair of loafers – we all have our own ideas - it’s not about what you wear but how you wear it and pull it all together. Style is hard to define, but I think most of us know it when we see it, be it simple and elegant, bold or quirky, its about knowing yourself and being happy with who you are!

It’s really about knowing you body - big boobs get fitted with a good bra – wear a shallow ‘V’ neck this creates an illusion of length, rather than a polo which just accentuates it. Large hips? then go for an A Line skirt or a skirt or dress that skims rather than fits too tightly – create interest with a great piece of jewellery.

Is size and fashion so important? Surely it’s about who you are, how you feel, having a confidence in yourself, in what you wear, making it your own and creating your own style.

Very few of us are 100% happy with our size or shape “my boobs are too big, my tummy to round, ahhh my hips!”

Trevor will be contacting other local schools, who operate this sort of service for pupils who live outside their catchment area, and consequently do not qualify for the free school bus. The daily charge will depend on the number of children who use the service. If you know of anyone who may be interested in using this service, but has not taken part so far, please let Trevor know. We are giving this our best shot.

By the time this newsletter comes out, we will have had the Neighbourhood Forum meeting, which on this occasion was at the Creighton Rugby Club on 26th Jan. These meetings are an opportunity to raise issues with your Councillors, but if you still have any matters of concern, please raise them with us, any time, at the address below.

We have had many complaints from residents about the icy conditions of the footpaths and roads, not just in estates at Carleton, but across the whole county. We can learn something from this experience. This subject has been raised at Parish Council meetings. One of the main issues has been the provision of additional grit bins, and, more importantly their replenishment. It has been suggested that a grit bin map be produced for all areas, with bins strategically placed in locations identified by the Parish Councils and Councillors.

For a trial period all the Parish Councils in the Dalston Ward, including St. Cuthbert’s Without are to hold a surgery prior to the formal meeting. The purpose of the surgery is to give residents the opportunity to meet informally with your Councillors, and the Police to raise any issues you may have. Thursday 23 September Carlisle Racecourse, Durdar Road, Carlisle

It was most unfortunate that the start of the two pilot run, in the wider Carleton area coincided with the extreme weather conditions. On the first day’s run we took the children to Dalston, only to find that the school had decided to close. However, we were encouraged by the number of children who boarded the bus, despite the weather conditions. At the time of writing we do not know what the outcome of this trial will be, but we are encouraged to think that there may be sufficient numbers to warrant a minibus service. One of the deciding factors will be the daily charge for this service as an attractive alternative to parents taking their children by car.

Lecture Tour with A Difference On New Year's Eve, Daniel was in no shape to drive, so he sensibly left his van in the car park and walked home.

Councillor Nicola Clarke

Thank you.

Financial Planning

‘A whole new body’! In ten sessions you will feel the “difference; in twenty you will see the difference; and in thirty you will have a whole new body ...said Joseph Pilates.

Happy New Year Claire xx
