I came home with renewed energy, new friendships, and felt more deeply connected to my spirit. I also had a dramatic improvement in my foot which was healing from a previous injury! The schedule had such a great balance of time in nature, time in connection, and also time to receive nourishing treatments, reflect and integrate. I highly recommend this experience. A Guide to Achieving the Highest FICO Score

A strong credit score is essential for various financial endeavors, including buying a home, obtaining a loan, or securing a credit card with favorable terms. While improving your credit score may take time and effort, it’s a worthwhile goal that can significantly impact your financial well-being. This article will delve into the intricacies of credit repair and provide practical tips to help you achieve the highest possible FICO score.

Understanding FICO Scores

FICO scores are a numerical representation of your creditworthiness, calculated based on information from your credit reports. Lenders use these scores to assess your risk of defaulting on debt. The higher your FICO score, the more likely you are to be approved for loans with favorable interest rates.

Factors Affecting FICO Scores

Several key factors contribute to your FICO score:

• Payment history: This is the most significant factor, accounting for 35% of your score. Consistent on-time payments demonstrate your financial responsibility.

• Amount owed: This includes your credit utilization ratio, which is the amount of debt you owe compared to your available credit. A low credit utilization ratio is ideal.

• Length of credit history: A longer credit history generally indicates a more established credit profile.

• Credit inquiries: Too many inquiries within a short period can signal to lenders that you may be seeking excessive credit.

• Types of credit: Having a mix of credit types (e.g., credit cards, loans) can positively impact your score.

Credit Repair Strategies

• Dispute Errors: Review your credit reports regularly and dispute any inaccurate information. Errors can negatively affect your score, so it’s crucial to correct them promptly.

• Pay Bills on Time: Consistent on-time payments are essential for improving your credit score. Set up automatic payments or reminders to ensure timely payments.

• Reduce Credit Utilization: Aim to keep your credit utilization ratio below 30%. This means using no more than 30% of your available credit.

• Limit New Credit Inquiries: Avoid applying for new credit cards or loans unless necessary. Each inquiry can temporarily lower your score.

Additional Tips

• Consider Credit Counseling: If you’re struggling with debt, consider seeking professional credit counseling. A credit counselor can help you develop a plan to manage your debt and improve your credit.

• Build a Positive Payment History: If you have a history of late payments, focus on making consistent on-time payments going forward. Over time, your positive payment history can outweigh past negative marks.

• Repay Debt: Reducing your outstanding debt can significantly improve your credit score. Prioritize paying off high-interest debt first.

• Use a Credit Builder Loan: If you have limited credit history, a credit builder loan can help you establish a positive payment history. These loans typically require you to save the money upfront, which is then released to you upon successful completion of the loan term.

• Monitor Your Credit Regularly: Keep track of your credit score and reports to identify any changes or potential issues.

• Be Patient: Improving your credit score takes time. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results.

• Avoid Credit Repair Scams: Be wary of companies that promise quick fixes or charge upfront fees for credit repair services. Legitimate credit repair services typically work on a contingency fee basis.

Byfollowingthesestrategiesandmaintainingaresponsibleapproach to credit management, you can significantly improve your FICO score andunlocknumerousfinancialopportunities.Remember, creditrepair isajourney, andconsistenteffortiskeytoachievingyourdesiredresults.

Debt can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to remember that you’re not alone. Many people in the Phoenix region face similar challenges. This article will explore effective strategies to help you break free from debt and regain financial control.

UNDERSTANDINGYOUR DEBT

The first step in overcoming debt is to understand its nature. Create a detailed list of all your debts, including the creditor, balance, interest rate, and minimum payment. This will give you a clear picture of your financial situation.

CREATINGABUDGET

A budget is essential for tracking your income and expenses and identifying areas where you can cut back. Consider using budgeting apps or spreadsheets to make this process easier. Be sure to include all of your income and expenses, including variable costs like utilities and groceries.

PRIORITIZING DEBTS

Once you have a clear understanding of your debt, it’s time to prioritize it. There are two main strategies:

• DEBT AVALANCHE: This method involves paying off your debts with the highest interest rates first. While it may take longer to pay off the total debt, you’ll save money on interest.

• DEBT SNOWBALL: This method involves paying off your smallest debts first. This can provide a sense of accomplishment and motivation as you see your debts decrease.

NEGOTIATINGWITH CREDITORS

In some cases, you may be able to negotiate with your creditors to reduce your interest rates or monthly payments. This can be a helpful strategy for those struggling to make their minimum payments.

SEEKING PROFESSIONALHELP

If you’re overwhelmed by debt and unable to manage it on your own, consider seeking professional help. A credit counselor can help you develop a personalized debt management plan and negotiate with creditors.

ADDITIONALTIPS

• AVOID NEWDEBT: While working to pay off your existing debt, it’s important to avoid accumulating new debt.

• INCREASE YOUR INCOME: Consider finding a side hustle or asking for a raise at your current job to increase your income and accelerate your debt repayment.

• BE PATIENT: Breaking free from debt takes time and effort. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results immediately.

REMEMBER, YOU’RE NOT ALONE IN THIS JOURNEY. MANY PEOPLE IN THE PHOENIX REGION HAVE SUCCESSFULLY OVERCOME DEBT AND ACHIEVED FINANCIAL FREEDOM. BY FOLLOWING THESE STRATEGIESAND SEEKING SUPPORTWHEN NEEDED,YOU CAN BREAK FREE FROM DEBTAND BUILD ABRIGHTER FINANCIALFUTURE.

If you’re already living in Phoenix and have family members considering a move to be closer to you here in the valley of the sun, helping them to fully understand the best way to sell their home for top dollar can make their transition smoother and more successful. As a real estate professional with deep roots in California and an understanding of the Phoenix market, I’m here to guide you through the steps that will ensure your loved ones’ homes sell quickly and at a premium price.

Aviara Real Estate, Westlake Village,

Invest in Professional Photography

High-quality photos are critical for online listings and marketing materials. Professional photography can highlight a home’s features and create a strong first impression. Ensure the home is well-lit and staged before the photoshoot to capture its full potential.

Step 1 Understand the Nationwide Market Dynamics

The real estate market is dynamic and robust, with high demand and limited inventory driving prices up in most locales. Before listing a home, it’s crucial to understand these market dynamics. The right timing can significantly impact the sale price. Typically, spring and summer are peak seasons, but staying updated on market trends ensures you capitalize on the best opportunities.

Step 2 Choose the Right Real Estate Agent

Finding an experienced and local real estate agent is paramount. An agent with in-depth knowledge of the market can provide insights into neighborhood trends, pricing strategies, and effective marketing tactics. For those moving from California, partnering with a trusted agent like myself, with experience in both markets, can offer a seamless transition and expert guidance throughout the selling process.

Step 3

Price Your Home Competitively

Setting the right price is essential. Overpricing can lead to prolonged listings, while underpricing might leave money on the table. Conducting a comparative market analysis (CMA) helps determine the optimal listing price based on recent sales of similar homes. A well-priced home attracts more buyers and can result in competing offers.

Enhance Your Curb Appeal

First impressions are lasting impressions. Simple improvements to enhance curb appeal can significantly increase a home’s value. Consider landscaping, a fresh coat of paint, and maintaining clean walkways. These small investments can yield substantial returns by attracting far more interested potential buyers.

First impressions often happen online. Investing in high-quality photography is crucial for making your home stand out in listings and marketing materials. Professional photos highlight your home’s best features, create an inviting atmosphere, and attract more potential buyers.

Step 5

Staging Your Home for Success

Staging is about showcasing the home’s potential. Decluttering, depersonalizing, and creating a furniture arrangement that highlights the home’s best features can make a significant difference.

Professional staging can further enhance this effect, making the home more appealing to a broader audience and potentially increasing its sale price.

Step 6

Be Flexible with Showings

Flexibility with showings can increase the number of potential buyers who view the home. While it may be inconvenient, accommodating various schedules can lead to more showings and faster sales. Open houses, particularly on weekends, can attract a larger pool of buyers.

Step 7

Review Offers Carefully

When offers come in, reviewing them carefully is crucial. Consider not just the offer price, but also contingencies, closing timelines, and buyer financing. Working with a knowledgeable agent helps in negotiating the best terms and selecting the offer that aligns with your goals.

Step 8

Prepare for Closing

Once an offer is accepted, several steps need to be completed before closing. These include disclosures, inspections and appraisals. Guidance from a real estate agent ensures all paperwork is completed accurately and on time, facilitating a smooth closing process.

By following these steps, your family members can maximize their home’s sale price and enjoy a smooth transition to the Phoenix area. As a founding partner of Aviara Real Estate with a deep understanding of both California and Phoenix markets, I am committed to providing exceptional service and support. Encourage your loved ones to reach out for personalized assistance, ensuring they make the most of their real estate journey.

The Riordan Mansion

a journey into the past that continues to shape Flagstaff’s future.

A Historic Gem in Flagstaff

Nestled quaintly in the Ponderosa Pine forests of Flagstaff, Arizona, the Riordan Mansion is a testament to the legacy of two pioneering brothers who helped shape the economic and social fabric of the town. Built in 1904, this magnificent home offers a unique window into the lives of the Riordan family, their contributions to Flagstaff, and the architecture of the early 20th century.

A Glimpse into History

The Mansion was commissioned by Timothy and Michael Riordan, brothers who were successful lumber barons in Flagstaff. As owners of the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company, they played an essential role in the economic development of the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Riordans were among the town’s early settlers, having moved west from Chicago in the 1880s.

Both brothers married sisters, Caroline and Elizabeth Metz, and in a unique architectural arrangement, the mansion was built as a shared home for their families. To bring their vision to life, the Riordans enlisted the services of Charles Whittlesey, a prominent architect known for designing the famed El Tovar Hotel at the Grand Canyon. The result was a grand structure that reflected the wealth, influence, and shared values of the Riordan family.

Beyond the tours, the site also features exhibits on the lumber industry, the history of Northern Arizona, and the conservation efforts that helped preserve the mansion for future generations. These exhibits not only celebrate the Riordan family’s legacy but also provide context for the broader historical and economic forces that shaped the region.

Architectural Masterpiece

Designed in the American Arts & Crafts style, the Riordan Mansion emphasizes harmony with the environment, fine craftsmanship, and the use of natural materials. The mansion is divided into two large wings, one for each of the 2 Riordan families, connected by a central communal room known as the “Rendezvous Room.” This thoughtful design allowed the families to maintain their privacy while still remaining closely connected.

The mansion boasts an impressive 40 rooms across 13,000 square feet, built using local materials such as volcanic stone and Ponderosa pine. Its low, sloping rooflines, extensive use of stone and timber, and large verandas blend seamlessly with the forested surroundings. Inside, stained glass windows, built-in furniture, and a massive stone fireplace in the central gathering area reflect the craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of the Arts and Crafts movement.

A Historic Treasure Preserved

In 1978, the Riordan Mansion was donated to Arizona State Parks and is now preserved as Riordan Mansion State Historic Park. Visitors to the park can explore the mansion, which is filled with original furnishings, artifacts, and memorabilia that offer a glimpse into the lives of the Riordan family and their era.

Innovative icebox system that relied on blocks of ice to keep perishable foods fresh in an era before electric refrigeration became commonplace. This area of the back utility porch allowed ice-block delivery without disturbing the family. The refrigerated food storage is accessed through the kitchen.

The upstairs bathroom in the Riordan Mansion featured modern amenities for the time, including a clawfoot tub, porcelain sink, and indoor plumbing, offering both comfort and convenience.

In 1904 The Riordan Mansion, was built to be a marvel of modern innovation for its time, boasting a variety of luxuries that were remarkably ahead of the era. Renowned architect Charles Whittlesey, designed the mansion to be equipped with conveniences that were virtually unheard of in most homes of the early 20th century.

One of the most impressive features was its indoor plumbing, which included hot and cold running water, a rare and extravagant luxury in Flagstaff during that time. The mansion also had its own centralized heating system, a significant advancement when compared to the typical use of wood-burning stoves & fireplaces in other homes. The presence of electric lighting, powered by electricity which was generated at the Arizona Lumber & Timber Company, further set the Riordan home apart, as electricity was still a novelty in most American households. The Riordans actually had electricity in their first homes in 1898. Downtown Flagstaff didn’t get electricity until 1913.

Additionally, the mansion was outfitted with built-in cabinetry, custom woodwork, and expansive windows that offered natural light and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. A state-of-the-art intercom system, installed to communicate between different parts of the house, provided another layer of convenience for the Riordan family.

These extraordinary features made the Riordan Mansion not only a symbol of wealth and status but also a pioneer in architectural and technological innovation for the period.

The unique kitchen of the Riordan Mansion featured a cutting-edge wood-burning stove, which was not only used for cooking but also ingeniously connected to the home’s water heater, providing a steady supply of hot water. This setup allowed the mansion to have hot running water throughout the house.

The gathering room at Riordan Mansion features art-glass windows showcasing portraits of Native Americans, to honor the region’s Indigenous cultures. The photographs were created by Smithsonian photographer Jack Hillers., and reflected the Riordan family’s respect for local history.

The Riordan Mansion’s natural ventilation system cleverly cools the home in summer by drawing cool air from the shaded areas below the house. Warm air is expelled through upper vents, creating a continuous flow that regulates the interior temperature.

The Riordans celebrated Christmas with great festivity, hosting elaborate gatherings filled with music, decorations, and a beautifully adorned tree. Their celebrations often included traditional meals, family gatherings, and a spirit of generosity, reflecting the warmth and togetherness of the season.

The Riordan family and their Profound Impact on Flagstaff, Arizona.

The Riordan family’s story begins with Timothy and Michael Riordan, two brothers who moved to Flagstaff from Chicago in the late 19th century. They were part of a large family of Irish descent, and their father Tim Riordan was a carpenter; who lived in New York when he first immigrated to the US. The brothers were brought to Flagstaff by their brother, Matthew Riordan, he had been successful in mining and other businesses throughout the west leading him to be offered the position of General Manager of the Ayer Lumber Company. He arrived in Flagstaff in 1884 (only two years after the railroad arrived) and encouraged his younger brothers to join him working at the mill.

Establishing the Riordan Legacy

The Riordan brothers arrived in Flagstaff in the 1880s, at a time when the town was still developing and the surrounding region was rich in natural resources. The brothers quickly became involved in the local lumber industry, which was essential to Flagstaff’s early economy.

In 1887, they became co-owners of the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company, one of the largest and most influential businesses in the area. Under the Riordans management, AL&T flourished, becoming the largest employer in Flagstaff. The company harvested the Ponderosa pine forests surrounding Flagstaff, which were in high demand for railroad related construction and building materials.

The success of AL&T allowed the Riordans to accumulate significant wealth, and they used their resources to invest in the community. They were instrumental in the early development of Flagstaff’s infrastructure and institutions, helping to build schools, churches, and other civic amenities.

Riordan Family’s Influence on Flagstaff’s Growth

Also, The Riordan brothers were not only successful businessmen but prominent civic leaders who believed in community

development. Their influence extended beyond the lumber industry, and they played key roles in shaping Flagstaff’s growth.

Key Contributions of the Riordan Family Include:

Supporting the Development of Northern Arizona University (NAU)

The Riordans were early advocates for establishing a higher education institution in Flagstaff. Their support helped pave the way for the founding of the Northern Arizona Normal School, which later became Northern Arizona University (NAU). Today, NAU is one of the largest educational institutions in the state.

Community Leadership and Civic Engagement

Both Timothy and Michael Riordan were actively involved in local politics and civic affairs. They served on boards, supported charitable causes, and were contributors to the development of the

local hospital, schools, & other essential services. Their leadership was a driving force behind Flagstaff’s transformation from a small, rural town into a more modern, thriving community.

Church and ContributionsReligious

The Riordans were devout Catholics, and they played an important role in the development of the Catholic community in Flagstaff. They contributed to as well as encouraged the construction of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, one of the oldest and most significant churches in Flagstaff.

Timothy and Michael Riordan were not only business partners but also brothers who shared a deep bond. They both married sisters, Caroline and Elizabeth Metz, and raised their families together in Flagstaff. Their familial closeness was also present in their business and philanthropic endeavors, creating a legacy built on shared values of community, hard work, and faith.

For more than 125 years, Lowell Observatory has been shaping history under the mesmerizing, star-studded skies of Flagstaff, Arizona. Come and immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of astronomy’s past, present, and it’s future firsthand.

The moon was at about first quarter when we shot this on November 20, 2012 in mediocre (1.0 arcsec) seeing. The image is a composite of five images that have been stitched together, and each exposure was 0.001 sec through a V filter, a testiment to our 125mm Bonn shutter.

Bringing The Lowell Observatory to Flagstaff

Percival Lowell, a wealthy astronomer from Boston, arrived in Flagstaff in 1894 to establish an observatory for studying Mars and other celestial bodies. Lowell was fascinated with the possibility of life on Mars, and he chose Flagstaff for his observatory due to its high altitude, clear skies, and dry climate, which made it ideal for astronomical observations. His observatory, now known as Lowell Observatory, became world-famous for its research and discoveries, including the eventual discovery of Pluto by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930.

The relationship between the Riordan family and Percival Lowell was one of mutual support. The Riordans, strong believers in discovery, science, conservation, and as local business leaders, were crucial in assisting Lowell with his observatory’s construction and operations. They provided practical support, including building materials and labor from their lumber company, which was instrumental in the establishment of the Lowell Observatory. The Riordans hosted A.E. Douglass. Douglass was Lowell’s representative sent to determine the best location for the observatory..

Timothy Riordan and Lowell shared a friendship, built on their mutual interests in science, culture, and the development of Flagstaff. While the Riordans were not directly involved in astronomy, they supported Lowell’s scientific endeavors, recognizing the cultural and educational value that the observatory brought to the town. The observatory attracted scientists and scholars to Flagstaff, raising the town’s profile & contributing to its reputation as a center for research and discovery.

Civic and Cultural Impact in a Most Significant Way

Both the Riordans and Lowell were involved in the broader civic life of Flagstaff. Lowell’s presence in Flagstaff, facilitated in part by the Riordans, helped bring international attention to the town. This not only boosted the local economy but also helped cultivate a culture of intellectual curiosity and scientific inquiry in the region. The observatory became a focal point of Flagstaff’s identity, while the Riordans’ contributions to the town’s infrastructure laid the foundation for its growth.

Shared Vision for Flagstaff

The Riordans and Percival Lowell both had a vision for Flagstaff that extended beyond its economic development. For the Riordans, this meant creating a thriving, cohesive community with access to education and culture. For Lowell, it meant establishing Flagstaff as a place where world-class scientific research could take place. The combination of the Riordans’ contributions to civic life and Lowell’s scientific pursuits helped shape Flagstaff into the unique and multifaceted town it is today.

Long-Lasting Legacy

The collaboration between the Riordans and Lowell left a lasting legacy in Flagstaff. The Lowell Observatory remains one of the most important astronomical research centers in the world, and it continues to attract visitors and scientists. Meanwhile, the Riordan family’s contributions are preserved through the Riordan Mansion State Historic Park, which stands as a testament to their impact on the local economy and community.

Together, the Riordans and Percival Lowell represent two sides of Flagstaff’s development: the Riordans’ focus on industry, infrastructure, and community-building, and Lowell’s focus on scientific exploration and education. Their combined efforts helped elevate Flagstaff’s status and ensure its place in both the history of astronomy and the broader history of the American West.

The Riordan Babbit Relationship

The relationship between the Riordan family and the Babbitt family in Flagstaff, Arizona, was one of close business, political, and personal connections. Both families were among the most influential pioneers in the region, and their enterprises helped shape the economic and social landscape of northern Arizona in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Pioneers and Business Leaders in Flagstaff

Both the Riordan and Babbitt families moved to Flagstaff in the 1880s & became deeply involved in the development of the local economy. Their ventures spanned multiple industries and had lasting impacts on the town and surrounding area.

The Riordan family, led by brothers Timothy and Michael Riordan, founded the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company. The lumber industry was vital to the growth of Flagstaff, as it supported the construction of railroads and buildings, driving regional economic expansion.

The Babbitt family, originally from Cincinnati, arrived in Flagstaff in 1886 when five brothers—Charles, George, Edward, William, and David Babbitt—began acquiring ranches and cattle operations. They eventually established the Babbitt Brothers Trading Company, which became a major force in ranching, cattle trading, and retail throughout northern Arizona. The Babbitt family was known for its extensive land holdings & involvement in developing Arizona’s agricultural as well as livestock industries.

Economic and Political Ties

As two of Flagstaff’s most prominent families, the Riordans and the Babbitts were frequently involved in joint ventures and shared business interests that shaped the town’s growth.

The Arizona Lumber and Timber Company, owned by the Riordans, provided essential resources for the railroad expansion, which was also important for the Babbitt family’s ranching business, as the railroads enabled the transportation of cattle and goods to broader markets. The success of both the lumber and cattle industries was interdependent, and the families worked together to develop Flagstaff.

Both families were also deeply involved in local politics and civic life. The Riordans and Babbitts were known for their efforts to build infrastructure and institutions in Flagstaff, including schools, churches, and hospitals. They were committed to the town’s future and worked to improve the quality of life for residents.

The families held significant political influence in Flagstaff and Arizona. The Babbitt family, in particular, became prominent in state politics. Bruce Babbitt, a member of the Babbitt family, later served as Attorney General of Arizona from 1975 to 1978, Governor of Arizona from 1978 to 1987, as well as U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1993 to 2001. The Riordans were also influential, especially in civic matters, contributing to the local infrastructure and economic development.

Social Ties

Beyond their business and political ties, the Riordan and Babbitt families shared close personal and social ties. As two leading families in a relatively small town, they frequently worked together in social settings, community events, and charitable endeavors. Their status as Flagstaff’s elite families meant that they were connected through community leadership and shared values regarding the growth of the town.

Contributions to Flagstaff’s Development

Together, the Riordans and Babbitts played a crucial role in the transformation of Flagstaff from a small frontier settlement into a prosperous town. Their combined influence in the lumber, cattle, and political sectors drove much of the early economic development in northern Arizona. The businesses they founded and the policies they supported laid the foundation for the region’s growth.

Legacy in Flagstaff

Today, both families’ legacies are still visible in Flagstaff. The Riordan Mansion, which is now a state historic park, showcases the Riordan’s contribution to the lumber industry and community life. The Babbitt family remains known for its ranching heritage and contributions to Arizona’s economy and politics. Both families are regarded as pivotal figures in Flagstaff’s history, and their names continue to be associated with the town’s founding and development.

Pet + CPR

A guide on how to perform pet CPR

As very proactive pet parents, both myself (Jeff Shoket) and my wife Irina understand the importance of educating yourself on knowing how to perform pet CPR. Dogs, like humans, can experience medical emergencies, and being prepared to respond quickly can save their lives. Knowing how to perform pet CPR allows us the knowledge to provide immediate care and assistance if our dogs experience choking, cardiac arrest, or other emergencies. It gives us peace of mind knowing that we can take action to help our fur baby family members in times of crisis. Moreover,

to be trained in how to perform pet CPR demonstrates your commitment to being a responsible pet parent and ensures that you are prepared to handle any situation that may arise with their beloved family members pets.

Important Note: Performing CPR is a lifesaving skill, but it should only be attempted if your pet is unconscious and not breathing. It’s crucial to seek professional help immediately. CPR is a temporary measure to keep blood flowing until you get your pet to veterinary care.

Before you begin:

Stay Calm: In a crisis, staying calm is essential for acting effectively. Take a deep breath and focus on helping your pet.

Gather Supplies: Ideally, have a pet first-aid kit on hand. It may contain a barrier device for rescue breaths and a CPR chart specific to different pet sizes.

Call for Help: While checking your pet’s condition, don’t waste time. Immediately call your veterinarian or emergency animal hospital and explain the situation. Ask for instructions and guidance while you assess your pet.

** Disclaimer: Neither Jeff nor Irina Shoket are trained veterinary professionals. This article is for informational purposes only and the information presented is sourced from The American Red Cross, for more information on their pet first aid courses you can visit their site at https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/cpr/performing-cpr/pet-cpr

Basics on how to perform pet CPR

Chest Compressions to get blood flowing to the organs Rescue Breaths to deliver oxygen to the organs

Before you begin to perform pet CPR YOUR PET’S AIRWAY

The second step in CPR is obtaining a clear & unobstructed airway.

PULL the tongue out out and away from your pet’s mouth, but be careful to not get bitten or pull to hard. STRAIGHTEN the neck by moving the head to be in line with the neck.

DO NOT HYPEREXTEND IN CASES OF NECK TRAUMA.

PERFORM two rescue breaths, by closing the mouth and performing mouth to nose ventilations. IF they continue, then proceed to

STEP 3,

BREATHING.

If there are no breaths, then look into the mouth.

VISIBLY inspect the mouth and look down the throat for a foreign body. If you see something, reach into the airway and remove it.

IF the airway is still not open, attempt HEIMLICH (shown in following steps).

TURN your pet upside down, with back against your chest.

WITH both arms, give sharp thrusts to the abdomen.

AFTER 5 thrusts, stop and check to see if the object is visible in the airway. If so remove it and give 2 mouth-tonose rescue breaths. If the breaths do not go in, repeat HEIMLICH.

Essential First Aid: How to Perform Pet CPR

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is the most important first aid technique that every pet owner should be comfortable with. Chances are that you will never have to use it, but it will save your pet’s life if a ball is lodged in his airway

There are some very basic steps to performing CPR on your pet:

Check your pet’s responsiveness: Gently shake the pet and call their name. If there is no response, the pet may be unconscious and in need of CPR.

Perform chest compressions: Lay the pet on their side on a flat surface. For small pets, hold them with their back against your chest. Place one hand over the other and compress the chest firmly, but gently, at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. For larger dogs, place your hands on the widest part of their chest and compress.

American Red Cross – Pet CPR diagram

Open the airway: After 30 compressions, gently tilt the pet’s head back and lift their chin to open the airway. Check for any obstructions and remove if necessary.

Provide rescue breaths: For small pets, cover their nose and mouth with your mouth and give two quick breaths. For larger dogs, close their mouth and breathe into their nose. Continue with cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until the pet starts breathing on their own or until help arrives.

Pet CPR STEP 1: RESPONSIVENESS

Check for Breathing and Heartbeat:

• Gently shake your pet and see if they react.

• Look for signs of breathing, like chest movement or air coming from the nose.

• Feel for a heartbeat. For cats and small dogs, you can feel for a pulse on the inside of the thigh where the leg meets the body. For larger dogs, check under their left armpit.

• If your pet is not breathing and you cannot feel a heartbeat, proceed to chest compressions.

STEP 2: Chest Compressions

Hand placement: (The main additional point here is WHERE you should be locating your dog or cat’s heart at. It’s ALWAYS behind the left armpit, but the specifics change based on body type where the best place to COMPRESS the heart is.)

• Cats, small dogs: Lay your pet on it’s right side, place the heel of one hand directly over the pet’s heart (It’s ALWAYS behind the left armpit), followed by your other hand on top.

• Deep-chested dogs: Place the heel of one hand over the widest part of the chest, followed by your other hand on top.

• Barrel-chested dogs: Lay the dog on its back, place one hand over the widest part of the sternum, and place your other hand on top. Lock your elbows and keep your shoulders directly above your hands.

Compressions: Push hard and fast at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. Compress the chest by 1/3 to 1/2 its width. Make sure the chest fully recoils between compressions.

Number of compressions: Perform 30 chest compressions.

Pet CPR STEP 3: Breathing

After 30 compressions, gently tilt the pet’s head back and lift their chin to open the airway. Check for any obstructions and remove if necessary. Go back to “YOUR PET’S AIRWAY”.

Pet CPR STEP 4: Give Rescue Breaths:

• Gently close your pet’s mouth and extend their neck to open the airway. If the chest does not expand then go back to “YOUR PET’S AIRWAY”.

• If you have a barrier device from a pet first-aid kit, use it to cover your pet’s nose and mouth while creating a seal.

• In the absence of a barrier device, pinch your pet’s nostrils closed with your thumb and forefinger.

• Cover your pet’s nose with your mouth and exhale until you see their chest rise.

• Give a second rescue breath, ensuring each breath is short and gentle.

• VENTILATE at 8 breaths per minute. 2 BREATHS every 15 seconds.

• PROCEED to STEP 4 – CIRCULATION

Continue CPR:

• Repeat the cycle of 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths.

• Ideally, have someone time the compressions to ensure a rate of 100-120 per minute. The song “Staying Alive” by the Bee Gees has a similar rhythm that can help you maintain the pace.

• Continue CPR until you feel a heartbeat or your pet starts breathing on its own or you reach a veterinary hospital.

Recheck for Breathing and Heartbeat:

• Briefly check for breathing and a heartbeat every 2 minutes.

• Get Help:

• Do not stop CPR until you reach a veterinary hospital. Even if your pet starts breathing again, veterinary care is crucial to assess the underlying cause of their collapse.

Additional Tips:

• If you’re unsure about the exact hand placement for your pet, prioritize starting chest compressions immediately. Even imperfect compressions can provide some blood flow until you get help.

• CPR is physically demanding. If you have someone to help, take turns performing compressions and rescue breaths. Switch roles every two minutes to avoid fatigue.

• Be gentle with your pet throughout the process. While chest compressions require force, avoid applying excessive pressure that could cause injuries.

• If you’re feeling overwhelmed, ask the veterinarian on the phone for additional guidance or instructions.

After Your Pet Revives:

• Even if your pet starts breathing again on its own, do not wait to seek veterinary care. They may still be in critical condition and require further evaluation and treatment.

• Explain the situation to your veterinarian, detailing the events leading to your pet’s collapse and any CPR performed.

• The veterinarian will run tests to determine the cause of the collapse and recommend appropriate treatment.

Splish, Splash, Pups Are Taking

a Bath

Have a Happy Pet Bath With These Tips for a Clean and Calm Bath Time...

Abi Rodriguez

Bathing your pet can be an enjoyable experience or a bit of a challenge, depending on your pet’s personality. Whether you have a playful pup, a fussy feline, or a small critter, keeping them clean is essential for their health and happiness. With these tips, you can make bath time smoother for both of you.

Timing the Bath

Not all pets need frequent baths. Dogs might need a bath every few weeks depending on their lifestyle, while cats— who self-groom—usually require less. Over-bathing can cause skin irritation by stripping away natural oils. Cats may only need a bath if they get particularly dirty or smelly, and small pets like guinea pigs rarely need to be bathed. Knowing your pet’s needs is key to setting a proper bath schedule.

Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have everything ready:

Pet-safe shampoo

Human shampoo can irritate their skin, so choose one made for pets.

Towels

One for lining the tub to prevent slipping and another for drying.

A cup or hose

To gently wet and rinse your pet.

Brush

Pre-bath brushing helps remove tangles, especially for long-haired pets.

Having everything on hand will keep you from scrambling mid-bath, making the experience less stressful for both you and your pet.

Bathing Basics

Making bath time a positive experience is important. Start by letting your pet explore the bath area, rewarding them with treats or toys to create a calm environment. Use lukewarm water to avoid discomfort, and speak to your pet in a soothing voice to keep them relaxed.

Gently wet your pet’s fur, being careful around their face and ears. Apply pet-safe shampoo, focusing on areas that get dirty like the paws and underbelly. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap, as leftover shampoo can cause irritation.

After the bath, dry your pet with towels. For dogs with thick or long coats, you might use a blow dryer on a low, cool setting to avoid matting.

Special Considerations

For dogs, remember to clean their ears and trim their nails post-bath. For cats, baths should be short, and some may prefer a damp cloth for spot cleaning rather than a full wash. Smaller pets usually don’t need full baths—wiping them down with a cloth or pet-safe wipe is often enough.

End on a Happy Note

Once bath time is done, reward your pet with treats or playtime. This positive reinforcement will help them associate baths with fun, making future grooming sessions more enjoyable.

With the right approach, bath time can be a pleasant bonding moment with your pet!

MAXIMIZING RESOURCES

WASTE MANAGEMENT ’s Green Vision for Phoenix

In a city where the desert environment demands conscious use of natural resources, Waste Management has emerged as a critical player in turning waste into opportunity. Their operations in Phoenix exemplify a cutting-edge approach to environmental stewardship—sorting and recycling garbage in ways that help the city minimize its ecological footprint while tapping into the hidden potential of everyday waste.

Sorting for Sustainability

At the heart of Waste Management’s efforts in Phoenix is an advanced sorting process that transforms the way the city handles its trash. Their Material Recovery Facility (MRF) employs state-of-the-art technology to automatically separate recyclables from waste, ensuring that valuable materials like paper, plastic, metal, and glass are diverted from landfills. Phoenix residents contribute by sorting their waste at the curb, but Waste Management takes it further, employing a combination of manual and mechanical processes to ensure that no resource goes unnoticed.

This comprehensive approach allows Waste Management to extract maximum value from every piece of garbage. Organic materials, for example, are sent to composting facilities to enrich the desert soil, while non-recyclable materials may be processed to produce renewable energy through waste-to-energy initiatives. It’s a system designed to close the loop on waste and extend the life cycle of natural resources.

The Future of Recycling in Phoenix

Phoenix, a rapidly growing city, produces an enormous amount of waste. Waste Management’s commitment to sustainability is vital to ensuring that future generations have access to the region’s natural beauty and resources. Their efforts to educate residents on responsible waste disposal—combined with technological innovations that allow them to sort waste more effectively—are setting a national standard for urban recycling programs.

Not only does this reduce the volume of material heading to landfills, but it also significantly lowers carbon emissions, conserves water, and supports the local economy by creating jobs in the green sector. Waste Management’s work in Phoenix proves that a forward-thinking, sustainable approach to waste can benefit both the community and the planet.

Turning Waste into a Resource

What might seem like a discarded soda can or food container to many is, in fact, an opportunity for Waste Management. Every material that enters their system is evaluated for its potential to be recycled, repurposed, or converted into energy. Phoenix’s desert climate and limited natural resources make it all the more crucial to extract value from the waste stream.

By recovering and recycling materials, Waste Management reduces the need for raw resources like oil, water, and trees, conserving the very elements that define life in the desert. This process also aligns with Phoenix’s broader sustainability goals, ensuring that the city grows responsibly while protecting its fragile ecosystem.

A Green Path Forward

As Phoenix continues to expand, Waste Management’s leadership in recycling and resource recovery will play a critical role in preserving the city’s natural environment. Their efforts highlight the power of innovation and community cooperation in turning waste into a valuable resource.

A Deeper Dive Into The Sorting Process

Waste Management’s sorting process is a sophisticated, multi-step operation designed to maximize the recovery of recyclable materials while minimizing what ends up in landfills. Here’s a detailed breakdown of how the sorting process typically works, specifically in Phoenix, AZ:

1. Collection and Transportation

It all begins with the collection of waste from residential, commercial, and industrial sources. In Phoenix, Waste Management uses specialized trucks to gather recyclable materials, organic waste, and non-recyclable garbage, often in separate bins provided to residents and businesses. These trucks transport the waste to a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for sorting.

2. Pre-Sorting

Upon arrival at the MRF, the waste is first subjected to a pre-sorting phase. This initial step involves manually removing large, non-recyclable, or hazardous items (like plastic bags, textiles, or electronics) that could damage sorting equipment. Workers may also remove any contaminants that could interfere with the recycling process.

3. Mechanical Sorting

Once pre-sorting is complete, the remaining materials enter a series of highly automated, mechanical sorting systems that use various technologies to separate recyclables based on their properties.

• Trommel Screens: These large, rotating drums are used to sift materials by size. Smaller items like glass shards or dirt fall through holes in the screens, while larger items like cardboard, plastic bottles, and cans continue on for further processing.

• Air Classifiers: Air streams are used to separate lighter materials, such as paper and plastic, from heavier items like metals and glass. The lighter materials are blown into a separate area for further processing, while the heavier ones are sorted downstream.

4. Optical Sorting

Next, Waste Management employs optical sorters, which use infrared sensors to identify different types of plastics based on their chemical composition. These machines can precisely sort materials like PET (from water bottles) and HDPE (from detergent bottles), ensuring that each type of plastic is separated for recycling.

• Near-Infrared (NIR) Technology: NIR scanners detect specific wavelengths reflected by different plastics, allowing for high-speed sorting of multiple plastic types in seconds.

• Color Sorters: Some optical sorters also use color recognition to separate materials, like distinguishing between clear, green, or brown glass for recycling.

5. Magnetic Separation

For metal separation, the facility uses powerful magnets to extract ferrous metals like steel from the waste stream. This method ensures that metal cans, appliances, and other steel-based materials are pulled away for recycling.

• Eddy Current Separators: Non-ferrous metals (like aluminum and copper) are separated using an eddy current system, which creates a magnetic field that repels non-magnetic metals, pushing them into a separate bin.

6. Glass Separation

Glass is typically separated early in the sorting process using trommel screens or vibrating machines that break it into small pieces. These glass shards are directed to a specialized area for further processing, where they are cleaned and sorted by color before being sent to manufacturers to make new glass products.

7. Final Quality Control

After all mechanical and optical sorting steps, the separated materials are subjected to quality control checks, often involving manual inspection. Workers ensure that only clean, uncontaminated recyclables make it through. Any items that were improperly sorted or missed by machines are removed at this stage.

8. Baling and Shipping

Once materials are fully sorted, they are compacted into bales—large, condensed blocks of recyclables like paper, plastic, metal, or cardboard. These bales are then sold to manufacturers who use the recycled materials to produce new products. For example, paper might be recycled into packaging, and plastics into new bottles.

9. Organic Waste and Energy Recovery

For organic waste, such as food scraps and yard waste, Waste Management in Phoenix often diverts these materials to composting facilities or anaerobic digesters. Composting turns organic waste into nutrient-rich soil for landscaping or agriculture, while anaerobic digestion can convert waste into bio-gas, a renewable energy source.

Non-recyclable waste that cannot be processed any further is often used in waste-to-energy facilities, where it’s incinerated to generate electricity, further reducing the need for landfills.

This advanced sorting process enables Waste Management to maximize the recovery of valuable materials, minimize contamination, and significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. Through this system, they contribute to a circular economy where more resources are reused and less is wasted.

The Artistic Journey of James Muir: Master of Allegory and History in Bronze

James Muir stands out as one of the preeminent American sculptors of our time, he is a visionary artist whose work far transcends the conventional boundaries of bronze sculpture.

His creations are highly celebrated not only for their craftsmanship but also for the deep allegorical significance that each embodies. Muir’s sculptures offer a deeply profound commentary on history, spirituality, as well as the human condition, using symbolism and form to explore universal themes of morality, justice, and freedom.

This issue of Discover The Phoenix Region delves into the life and artistic journey of James Muir and examines some of his most iconic works.

Early Life & Military Influence

James Muir was born with an innate passion for both art and history. Raised in a family with a deep appreciation for American history, Muir developed a strong connection to the stories of the past, particularly those of the American frontier and the nation’s military. This connection was further strengthened when he joined the military himself through an appointment to West Point, an experience that would later have a profound influence on his work.

Muir’s time spent in the military introduced him to the concepts of duty, honor, sacrifice, and the very stark realities of war. His experiences served as a bedrock for his future artistic endeavors, shaping his approach to portraying historical and military subjects. While Muir’s sculptures would eventually span a wide array of themes, his military background lent authenticity and emotional depth to his depictions of soldiers and of battle scenes, establishing him as a powerful voice in American art.

The Transition to Sculpture

While Muir’s artistic talents were evident from a young age, it wasn’t until later in life that he discovered his true calling as a sculptor. His fascination with bronze as a medium arose from its ability to capture intricate detail as well as convey permanence. Muir honed his craft over time, mastering the complex techniques required to work with bronze. His sculptures, which are characterized by their precision and attention to detail, soon began to garner attention from galleries and collectors alike.

However, it was not just Muir’s technical skills that set him apart— it was his ability to imbue his sculptures with layers of meaning. Each of Muir’s works tells a story, often inviting viewers to look beyond the surface and consider the deeper allegorical messages contained within. Muir’s use of symbolism allows his sculptures to resonate on multiple levels, appealing not only to art enthusiasts but also to those with an interest in philosophy, history, and spirituality.

Muir’s Athena’s Prayer depicts a modern-day Athena, the goddess of War and Wisdom, standing in quiet reflection after returning from battle, her helmet held protectively over her heart as she gazes upward in prayer, inviting the viewer to contemplate the healing and personal toll of war. This bronze sculpture serves as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of all women who have served in America’s Armed Forces.

Allegory in Bronze:

One of the defining characteristics of James Muir’s work is his use of allegory. His sculptures often explore themes of morality, justice, freedom, as well as human interconnectedness. Muir uses symbolism and metaphor to express his ideas, offering viewers a chance to reflect on the universal truths that underpin the vast human experience.

”They Served Well”

James Muir’s “They Served Well” is a powerful tribute to the peace officers of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) who sacrificed their lives in service. This sculpture serves as a memorial to those who have fallen in the line of duty, standing as a symbol of dedication and bravery. Each element of the sculpture carries deep symbolic meaning, making it more than just a memorial—it is an embodiment of the values of law enforcement and an inspiration for future generations of officers.

At the heart of the sculpture is a Spanish Colonial horse, representing the Sheriff’s Office. This horse, a strong and vigilant figure, stands with its feet planted on the Book of Justice, symbolizing a connection to the higher ideals of truth and righteousness. The horse stands firm against the winds of adversity, reflecting the department’s unwavering commitment to protecting and serving the community, even in the face of great challenges.

One of the most poignant features is the empty saddle, a silent reminder of the fallen officer. This 1910-1920 H.H. Heiser saddle was popular among Arizona Sheriffs and Rangers and is adorned with hearts on the breast collar to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The pistol belt and Badge of Honor draped over the saddle horn symbolize the legacy of the officer and the readiness of the next individual willing to take up the mantle of service.

The rifle and lariat hanging by the saddle represent the tools of the trade, but they also symbolize law enforcement’s long reach across all 50 states. The Model 94 Winchester rifle and 50 feet of lariat illustrate the forceful yet peaceful means by which officers carry out their duties. The Model 1873 Colt .45 Single Action pistol, with its 12 cartridges, represents the twelve months a year officers are on duty, while the 24 rifle cartridges signify the around-the-clock nature of their service. This dual symbolism of time and vigilance highlights the commitment peace officers have to their community.

The saddlebags and canteen, modeled after U.S. cavalry surplus items, represent the safety, welfare, and sustenance officers provide to the people they serve. The bit used by the horse, also a cavalry surplus model, underscores the very unique relationship between the Sheriff and the community. The Sheriff is directly accountable to the people, and this responsibility is symbolized by the bit, representing the Sheriff’s role as a “Peace Officer” who serves at the will of the voters.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of the sculpture is the Badge of Honor. Modeled after a badge from 1922, it bears the number “15,” which represents the fifteen deputies who had lost their lives in service at the time of the sculpture’s dedication in 2001. This badge ensures that the fallen officers are forever remembered by the community and their peers.

Standing on the Book of Justice, the horse also symbolizes eternal justice, with the eternity symbol on the book highlighting the timeless nature of law enforcement’s mission. The circular red platform on which the horse stands represents the blood shed by the fifteen deputies who gave their lives in service, a tribute to their ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve.

Finally, the 13th Bullet, also known as the Eternal Enigma, serves as a reminder of the unknown risks and uncertainties peace officers face daily. This bullet represents the very unpredictable nature of their work and the dangers inherent in their duty.

James Muir’s “They Served Well” is more than a memorial—it is a powerful testament to the courage and sacrifice of peace officers, while capturing the essence of duty, service, and honor. Through its intricate symbolism, the sculpture stands as an enduring reminder of the values that guide law enforcement and the sacrifices made to uphold justice. It serves as both a tribute to those who have fallen and as an inspiration for future officers to continue the mission of protecting and serving with integrity.

“...and Justice for All”

Another iconic piece is “... and Justice for All”, a sculpture that embodies the ideals of fairness and equality. In this work, Muir depicts a blindfolded figure holding a sword and scales, which is a classical representation of Lady Justice. However, Muir’s interpretation of this age-old symbol is both modern and timeless. The sword represents the power of truth, while the scales symbolize the careful balance of justice.

In “..and Justice for All,” Muir challenges viewers to reflect on the state of justice in our modern society. The blindfold over the figure’s eyes, traditionally meant to represent impartiality, takes on new meaning in Muir’s work. He prompts us to question whether true justice is always blind or if it is sometimes influenced by external forces. The intricate detailing of the figure’s robes and the polished finish of the bronze further elevate this piece, making it one of Muir’s most profound and enduring works.

“Christ of the Holy Cross”

Muir’s deep spiritual sensitivity is exemplified in his work “Christ of the Holy Cross”, a sculpture that embodies the profound sacrifice and the unconditional love that is symbolized by Christ’s crucifixion. This masterpiece stands prominently at the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, Arizona, inviting reflection and reverence from all who visit. The sculpture, installed in 2018, portrays Christ on the cross, with striking realism and emotional depth, capturing the moment of the ultimate sacrifice for humanity’s salvation.

The crucifixion scene is more than a mere depiction of suffering; Muir’s sculpture conveys a message of the redemption, grace, and the triumph of love over death. Every element, from the detailed anatomy of Christ’s figure to the texture of the cross itself, is crafted to evoke both the physical torment and the spiritual transcendence of the moment. The piece resonates with viewers regardless of their religious background, as it speaks to the universal themes of sacrifice, forgiveness, and divine love.

Much like Muir’s other works, “Christ of the Holy Cross” transcends its religious subject matter to communicate deeper, universal truths. The sculpture stands as a powerful representation of faith, hope, and the eternal promise of salvation.

Historical Sculptures: Preserving the Past

In addition to his allegorical works, James Muir has created a significant body of historical sculptures. These pieces, often depicting figures from the American West & key moments in military history, serve as a visual chronicle of the nation’s past. Muir’s ability to capture historical detail and bring it to life in bronze has earned him a reputation as a master of historical sculpture.

“Lighted Lantern”

Muir’s “The Lighted Lantern” is a striking life-sized sculpture standing 6 ½ feet tall with a 5-foot diameter, embodying the strength, hope, and unity of the pioneer spirit. The sculpture depicts a pioneer couple holding aloft the Lantern of Hope, symbolizing their courage to face the unknown and their commitment to a future of freedom for all. Their bond, illuminated by the lantern’s light, represents a union grounded in trust and determination. The couple’s journey is marked by the broken wagon wheel beneath them, a poignant reminder of the end of one chapter and the start of another as they venture into new, uncharted territories.

The man, armed with a Model 1876 Winchester, stands firmly on the Book of Truth, a testament to their pursuit of honesty, integrity, and justice. Every element of The Lighted Lantern speaks to the enduring resilience of pioneers.

“Duty First”

Muir’s bronze sculpture “Duty First” stands as a powerful tribute to the gallant men of the U.S. 26th Cavalry Philippine Scouts. The 15-foot statue depicts a Filipino cavalryman on horseback, which symbolizes the bravery, dedication, & service of these soldiers during war. The detail in the figure, both the rider and his horse—reflects Muir’s commitment to historical accuracy, while the dynamic pose of the cavalryman conveys the readiness and resolve that defined the Philippine Scouts in their fight for freedom. The title, Duty First, underscores the Scouts’ unwavering commitment to their mission, even in the face of over whelming odds.

Unveiled in Chicago, Illinois, in 2010, Duty First stands as a lasting tribute to the legacy of the Philippine Scouts. Muir’s ability to capture not just the physical form but the spirit of this soldier, elevates the sculpture well beyond mere representation; it becomes a testament to sacrifice and valor. The statue serves as a reminder of a lesser-known chapter in military history, honoring those who fought bravely and ensuring that their story continues to inspire future generations.

A Legacy of Art & Meaning

James Muir’s contributions to the world of sculpture extend far beyond his technical mastery of bronze. His works, whether allegorical or historical, engage viewers on a deeply emotional and intellectual level. By blending symbolism, historical accuracy, and philosophical reflection, Muir has created a body of work that speaks to the universal human experience. His sculptures challenge us to think critically about issues of justice, freedom, and morality, while also reminding us of the importance of remembering and honoring the past.

Muir’s legacy as an artist is one of profound meaning and lasting impact. His sculptures have found homes in museums, galleries, and public spaces across the United States, where they continue to inspire and provoke thought. For those who encounter his work, James Muir offers not only an appreciation of beauty and craftsmanship but also an invitation to engage with the deeper questions that shape our world.

In an era when art is often fleeting, James Muir’s sculptures stand as enduring symbols of the values and ideals that define us as human beings. Whether through his depictions of historical figures, allegorical representations of justice and freedom, or his tributes to the military, Muir has crafted a timeless and powerful body of work that will resonate for the generations to come.

ESSENTIAL DRIVING FACTS Every Parent Must Discuss With Their Teen When They Turn 16

When your child turns 16, it’s a thrilling milestone— both for them and for you as a parent. They are eager for freedom, and you’re excited (and maybe a little nervous) about their next big step: driving. While the excitement is palpable, it’s crucial to have a serious sit-down conversation about the realities and responsibilities of getting behind the wheel.

Here are the key topics every parent should cover with their teen before they take to the roads on their own:

1. Understanding Driving Laws

It’s not just about passing a driving test; teens need to be aware of local and state driving laws. Arizona’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) law is essential, as it restricts when and with whom new drivers can be on the road. For example, in Arizona, teens under 18 can’t drive between midnight and 5 a.m. without a licensed adult in the car, unless for work or school-related reasons. Be sure they understand these limitations.

2. The Dangers of Distracted Driving

Distracted driving, particularly texting while driving, is one of the most significant threats to young drivers today. Teens need to grasp that sending “just 1 text” can wait, and emphasize the importance of hands-free devices if they absolutely must communicate while driving. An open conversation about apps that prevent notifications while driving can also help teens manage this temptation.

3. Speeding and Reckless Driving

Teens often feel invincible, which may lead to speeding or reckless behavior behind the wheel. Make sure your teen understands how a split-second decision to speed or cut someone off can lead to life-altering consequences. It’s important to stress that no destination is worth endangering lives.

4. The Impact of Impaired Driving

Talk candidly about the risks of driving under the influence— whether from alcohol, drugs, or even prescription medications. Teens need to be fully aware of the severe legal penalties and the real-life dangers impaired driving poses. More importantly, ensure your teen feels comfortable calling you for a ride if they find themselves in an unsafe situation, no questions asked.

5. Car Maintenance and Responsibility

Driving isn’t just about steering the car; it’s also about maintaining it. Discuss the basics of car care, like oil changes, tire pressure checks, and understanding dashboard warning lights. Not only does this help them stay safe, but it also teaches responsibility. Additionally, review what to do in case of an emergency, like a flat tire or breakdown.

6. Handling Peer Pressure

Teens are more likely to engage in risky behaviors when surrounded by their peers. Whether it’s driving fast to impress friends or being pressured into giving a ride to someone they shouldn’t, they must know how to say no and make decisions that prioritize their safety over fitting in.

7. Insurance and Financial Costs

Help your teen understand the financial responsibilities of driving, starting with insurance. Explain how reckless behavior can lead to increased premiums, and how safe driving can help keep costs down. Additionally, review the costs of gas, maintenance, and potential repairs—this will help them appreciate the privilege of driving even more.

8. The Importance of Defensive Driving

Defensive driving is all about staying alert and anticipating the actions of others on the road. Encourage your teen to always assume that other drivers might make mistakes, and to drive proactively rather than reactively. This mindset can prevent accidents and keep them safer on the road.

9. Building Confidence Without Overconfidence

While it’s important to foster confidence behind the wheel, overconfidence can lead to dangerous situations. Remind your teen that it’s okay to take their time and that there’s no shame in being cautious, especially when they are just starting out. Over time, their skills will improve, but rushing to “be great” right away can lead to avoidable mistakes.

Having this conversation won’t just prepare your teen for driving—it will also give you both peace of mind. By addressing these key topics, you’re helping them transition into responsible, safe drivers, and ensuring they are better equipped for the freedom and responsibilities that come with hitting the road.

10. Knowing When to Call for Help

Lastly, discuss what to do in emergency an situation—whether it’s a car accident, getting lost, or breaking down on the highway. Stress the importance of staying calm, calling for help, and ensuring that they always know their location. This includes having emergency numbers and being familiar with their insurance company’s contact information.

It’s All Hallows Eve,

An Evening Made Complete With Mummy

Cake Pops!!

Or Spider Cupcakes

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 cup all-purpose flour

• 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

• 1 cup granulated sugar

• 2 large eggs

• 1/2 cup milk

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• White chocolate candy melts

• Candy eyes

• Lollipop sticks

• Parchment paper

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add wet ingredients: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the milk and vanilla extract.

Combine: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

WHITE CHOCOLATE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING (for

forming the cakepops)

Ingredients:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

3 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup white chocolate, finely chopped

Instructions:

Cream the butter: Beat the softened butter in a large bowl until light and fluffy.

Add sugar: Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until well combined.

Add flavorings: Stir in the vanilla extract and heavy cream.

Melt chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until smooth.

Combine: Gradually add the melted white chocolate to the buttercream mixture, beating until well incorporated.

Adjust consistency: If the frosting is too thick, add a tablespoon of heavy cream at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.

Tips:

For a smoother texture, sift the powdered sugar before adding it to the butter.

To prevent the frosting from becoming too thick, make sure the butter is softened to room temperature.

For a more intense white chocolate flavor, increase the amount of white chocolate in the recipe.

To store leftover frosting, cover it tightly and refrigerate. Bring it to room temperature before using it again.

Bake: Pour the batter into a greased and floured 8-inch square baking pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool: Let the cake cool completely in the pan before transferring it to a wire rack.

Crumble and mix: Crumble the cooled cake into a large bowl. Add the frosting and mix until well combined, forming a dough-like consistency.

Shape the balls: Roll the cake mixture into small, uniform balls. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for about 30 minutes.

Insert sticks: Dip the ends of the lollipop sticks into melted white chocolate and insert them into the frozen cake balls.

Place them back in the freezer for a few minutes to set.

Dip in white chocolate: Melt the remaining white chocolate. Dip each cake pop into the melted chocolate, turning to coat completely. Allow excess chocolate to drip off.

Add bandages: While the chocolate is still wet, drizzle or pipe thin lines of white chocolate over the cake pops to create a mummy bandage effect. For this you can either use a pastry bag or you can use a ziplock bag with the right sized cut on a bottom corner of the bag. For this purpose your cut should allow no more than a toothpick in the bag.

Add eyes: Place two candy eyes on the top of each cake pop.

Let set: Allow the cake pops to set completely in the refrigerator before serving.

Finally tie a thinly cut 1/4 inch wide by 8” long piece of burlap cloth in a knot around the lollipop stick near the base of the cakepop.

Set The Perfect Thanksgiving Table...

“GRATITUDE

CAN TRANSFORM COMMON DAYS INTO THANKSGIVINGS, TURN ROUTINE JOBS INTO JOY, AND CHANGE ORDINARY OPPORTUNITIES INTO BLESSINGS.” -WILLIAM ARTHUR WARD

Photography by: Rick Rome

Thanksgiving is more than just a meal; it’s an opportunity to gather with loved ones and reflect on the blessings of the year. One of the most anticipated aspects of the holiday, besides the delicious feast, is the way the table is set. The Thanksgiving table is not just a place for serving food but a reflection of warmth, hospitality, and tradition. Setting the table thoughtfully can elevate the entire experience, making guests feel welcomed and cherished. Here’s how you can create a beautifully set Thanksgiving table that balances tradition and elegance.

Start with the Basics: Choosing the Right Table Setting

Before diving into the decorative elements, it’s important to choose the foundation of your table setting. Decide whether you want a formal or casual approach, as this will dictate the types of dishes, flatware, and glasses you’ll use.

Formal Setting: A more formal Thanksgiving table typically includes a charger plate, dinner plate, salad plate, and soup bowl. Flatware is placed to the left and right of the plate in the order of use. Glassware may include a water glass and wine glass.

Casual Setting: For a more relaxed feel, opt for fewer layers—maybe just a dinner plate and salad plate. You can also arrange the flatware more simply, leaving out certain pieces like soup spoons if they’re not necessary.

No matter the approach, using matching dishware and elegant flatware helps set a cohesive tone.

The Centerpiece: Creating a Focal Point

The centerpiece is often the visual anchor of the Thanksgiving table. It draws attention and sets the mood, whether it’s traditional, modern, or rustic. When planning your centerpiece, aim for something that enhances the meal without over whelming the space.

Floral Arrangements: Seasonal flowers in autumnal colors such as deep reds, oranges, yellows, and purples—are a classic choice. You can place them in vases or rustic containers like mason jars or cornucopias for a more traditional look.

Natural Elements: Incorporating natural elements like pumpkins, gourds, pinecones, and greenery is a beautiful way to reflect the harvest theme. Scatter small pumpkins or nuts along the length of the table, or create an arrangement using fall leaves.

Candles: Candles add warmth and intimacy to the meal. Place tall candles in elegant holders or use votive candles scattered along the table. If using scented candles, choose subtle fragrances that won’t overpower the food.

Ensure that the centerpiece is low enough that guests can easily see and converse across the table.

Layering Textures: Linens and Tablecloths

Linens play a crucial role in adding texture and sophistication to the table. A well-chosen tablecloth or runner can tie the whole setting together.

Tablecloths and Runners: Opt for a tablecloth in neutral tones—white, cream, or beige—for a clean and classic look, or embrace autumnal hues like burnt orange or deep brown. If you prefer a more rustic feel, a burlap or linen table runner can be used to add a tactile element while allowing the wood of the table to shine through.

Placemats and Napkins: Placemats help define each guest’s space, while cloth napkins add a touch of formality. Napkins can be simple or intricately folded and placed on each plate, secured with a seasonal napkin ring or sprig of rosemary.

Personal Touches:

Name Cards and Thoughtful Details

Adding personal touches to each place setting can make your guests feel special and appreciated.

Name Cards: Handwritten name cards are a lovely touch that adds a personal feel to the table. You can tuck them into mini pumpkins, tie them around a napkin, or place them in small stands. These help guests know where to sit, while also creating an opportunity for playful or elegant design.

Gratitude Notes: In keeping with the Thanksgiving spirit, consider adding small cards at each place setting where guests can write something they’re thankful for. These notes can be shared during the meal, adding a moment of reflection and connection.

Finishing Touches: Glassware and Flatware

Glassware and flatware are practical but also decorative elements of the table setting. Choose items that complement the overall style of your table—whether it’s vintage, modern, or classic.

Glassware: Even for a casual Thanksgiving meal, polished glassware elevates the experience. If wine will be served, choose a wine glass that feels balanced in weight and size. For non-alcoholic beverages, simple tumblers or goblets add a touch of elegance.

Flatware: Ensure that your flatware is polished and placed in the correct order. For a more luxurious look, gold or silver flatware adds an extra layer of sophistication.

Serving Pieces: Showcasing the Meal

The way food is served also contributes to the overall ambiance of the Thanksgiving table. Serve each dish in beautiful, coordinated serving pieces that complement your table setting. Platters for the turkey, elegant bowls for side dishes, and small vessels for sauces all add to the aesthetic.

Consider leaving space on the table for family-style serving, allowing guests to pass dishes around and create a communal, cozy atmosphere.

Balancing Tradition as well as Innovation

Thanksgiving is a holiday steeped in tradition, and many people find comfort in continuing long-held family practices when setting the table. Whether it’s using your grandmother’s china or a particular centerpiece passed down through generations, incorporating these elements adds sentimental value. At the same time, don’t hesitate to mix in modern touches like minimalist place settings or contemporary decor to reflect your personal style.

Keeping Functionality in Mind

While aesthetics are important, functionality should not be overlooked. Ensure that there’s ample space for food and drink, and avoid overcrowding the table with decorations. Guests should have enough elbow room to eat comfortably, and dishes should be easily accessible.

Crafting a Most Unforgettable Experience

Setting the Thanksgiving table is an opportunity to express gratitude, creativity, and thoughtfulness. Whether you’re hosting a small family gathering or a large feast, taking the time to design a beautiful table can transform the meal into an unforgettable experience. By balancing tradition with modern elegance, and paying attention to the smallest details, your Thanksgiving table will not only look stunning but also serve as a reflection of the love and appreciation you have for those gathered around it.

A New Era Begins For the Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are entering a new chapter in their storied history, and football enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating what the 2024 season will bring. With a revamped roster and a renewed sense of optimism, the Cardinals are poised to make a significant impact in the NFC West.

Key Additions and Departures

The Cardinals have made several strategic moves to bolster their roster and address key areas of need. The most important player for Arizona remains Kyler Murray, the talented quarterback who is expected to make a significant impact after recovering from injury. Murray’s elite passing skills and athleticism have the potential to elevate the Cardinals’ overall performance in the 2024 season, assuming he remains healthy throughout the year.

The Cardinals’ new head coach, Jonathan Gannon, enters his second season with the team. Known for his defensive expertise and innovative schemes, Gannon has been instrumental in shaping a young Cardinals defense. His leadership and fresh ideas are expected to drive improvement, especially after a challenging 2023 season.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals have parted ways with several key players, most notably wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who signed with the Tennessee Titans in 2023. Hopkins’ absence will be felt, but the team is confident in its young core of receivers and believes they can step up to fill the void.

Offensive Outlook

The Cardinals’ offense, led by Kyler Murray, has the potential to be explosive in 2024. Murray’s ability to make big plays, both with his arm and his legs, makes him one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the NFL. The team hopes that Murray’s return will help them unlock the offense’s full potential.

The ground game will be anchored by James Conner, a versatile back who has been a steady presence since joining the Cardinals. Conner’s power running, combined with his ability to catch passes out of the backfield, provides the offense with a reliable weapon.

In the passing game, the Cardinals will look to their young receiving corps, which includes Rondale Moore, Hollywood Brown, and Greg Dortch. This group brings speed and playmaking ability, and their development will be key to Arizona’s offensive success in 2024.

THE CARDS FOR A NEW ERA

The Arizona Cardinals are poised for a resurgence in 2024, with a revamped roster and a renewed sense of optimism.

The team has undergone significant changes, with a new head coach and several key additions to the roster. Led by quarterback Kyler Murray, the Cardinals are poised to make a statement in the NFC West. With a talented young core and a renewed sense of optimism, the Cardinals are ready to soar to new heights. Don’t miss out on the action!

Defensive Outlook

The defense is where the Cardinals have seen significant changes under head coach Jonathan Gannon. Although they are in a rebuilding phase, the team is hoping for major strides in 2024, especially with a renewed focus on developing young talent.

Linebacker Zaven Collins continues to emerge as a cornerstone of the defense, with his versatility allowing him to both contribute in pass coverage and in stopping the run. The secondary, led by Marco Wilson, also shows promise. Wilson, along with a mix of young and veteran talent, will need to step up in a defense that struggled at times in 2023

. Coaching Staff

Jonathan Gannon leads the coaching staff as head coach, bringing with him his defensive expertise from his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. Gannon is known for his ability to develop young talent, which will be crucial as the Cardinals focus on building a strong core for the future.

Jeff Rodgers continues to serve as the special teams coordinator, a role in which he has found success over the years. His experience adds stability to the team’s overall coaching approach, which is focused on player development and long-term success.

Expectations for the Season

The 2024 season brings with it a sense of cautious optimism for the Arizona Cardinals. While there are many challenges ahead, including competing in a tough NFC West division, the team is hopeful that the changes they’ve made—both in personnel and in coaching—will lead to a more competitive season.

A lot will hinge on the health and performance of Kyler Murray, who is expected to be the centerpiece of the offense. If Murray can stay healthy and the defense shows improvement under Gannon’s leadership, the Cardinals have a chance to surprise their division rivals.

Football fans in Arizona are eagerly anticipating the start of the 2024 season, with hopes that the Cardinals can exceed expectations and make a push toward the playoffs.
