I know Port Macquarie has a bit of a rep for being a sun-soaked summer darling—but let me tell you a little secret: the cooler months are where it’s really at. Think fewer crowds, more whales, brisk beach walks, and that smug, warm-and-cosy feeling after a day of exploring followed by a night of fireside dining with a glass of red (or two… no judgment here).
A few reasons why I LOVE Port Macquarie at this time of year:
• So. Many. Whales. Migration season is May-November.
• Great surf with mild water temperatures
• Cooler sunny days = perfect hiking weather
• Cooler nights = fire pits, fab food, fairy lights and vino vibes
• ‘Tis the season to hit the Winery Trail (and top up your winter wine rack) So grab this guide and dive headfirst into everything this fabulous region offers— minus the summer sweat. You're going to love it. Go forth and frolic! Kim

HISTORY& HERITAGE
Acknowledgement of Country
We acknowledge the Birpai people, the traditional owners of the land where we work and live, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We extend our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who choose to call this region home.
Discover Port Macquarie’s Rich History & Culture
Port Macquarie is steeped in history, shaped by both its vibrant Aboriginal heritage and colonial past. The Birpai people have lived here for over 40,000 years, thriving in harmony with the land and its natural rhythms. European settlement began in the early 1800s, with John Oxley charting the area in 1818 and the establishment of one of Australia’s earliest penal colonies 1821. By the 1830s, free settlers had arrived, but this era brought great hardship to the Birpai people, who suffered immense loss through disease, displacement, and conflict. Today, Port Macquarie is a welcoming coastal town that honours its deep roots. From historic sites to immersive Birpai-guided tours, there’s plenty to explore.

Say Hello to 91 Koalas on the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail!
If you haven’t snapped a selfie with a giant, brightly painted Hello Koalas sculpture, did you even visit Port Macquarie? For over a decade, the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail has delighted visitors and locals alike. It’s an iconic, artsy treasure hunt featuring 91 onemetre-high koala sculptures, each with its unique (and totally Instagrammable) design. The Showstopper? The Big Koala, Spirit of All Koalas—a massive 2.5-metre fibreglass beauty at Guulabaa (next to Wildnets), in the Cowarra State Forest. Painted by local artist Pauline Roods, it’s covered in 31 mini koalas and was crowned “Best Landmark Sculpture in Australia” in 2023. Every sculpture tells a story—about cultural heritage, conservation, and more. Look out for Guula (‘koala’ in Gathang language), painted by Aboriginal students, and Crusader Koala, which shines a light on threatened species. And don't miss the Hello Koalas Gallery + Gift Shop at 2/1A Blackbutt Road, Port Mac, where you can see 30+ koala sculptures all in one place, and shop for gorgeous koala-themed gifts to take home! Visit the website - hellokoalas.com - for trail maps, online shopping and info on the Hello Koalas Festival Treasure Hunt (Sept/Oct NSW School hols). See ad opp. page.

THE CLOCK IS TICKING.
Australia’s iconic koalas are in real danger. Due to habitat destruction and disease, they could disappear from the wild in as little as 20 years. That’s not a future we’re willing to accept—so we’re doing something about it. At Koala Conservation Australia (KCA), we’re all about protecting koalas and the places they call home. From rescue and rehab to education and breeding, we’re tackling the big threats—like habitat loss, disease, and climate change—head-on.
WE’RE
A KOALA HOT SPOT!
Did you know that the Port Macquarie region is home to more wild koalas than just about anywhere else in Australia? It’s the reason why Koala Conservation Australia (KCA) is based here, along with our famous Koala Hospital and world-first Wild Koala Conservation Breeding program & Visitor Centre at Guulabaa - Place of Koala.
OUR KOALA HOSPITAL HAS MOVED (TEMPORARILY)...
For over 50 years, our Koala Conservation Hospital in Port Macquarie has been rescuing, treating, and releasing wild koalas. We’re proud to be the first koala hospital in the world—and today, we’re an internationally recognised conservation and research centre welcoming over 100,000 visitors each year!
An exciting (and much-needed) upgrade to our hospital is underway, and our Lord St site has been closed temporarily. Our hospital koala patients (and their care) have been transferred to Guulabaa - Place of Koala. Our beloved resident koalas have also been relocated to Guulabaa, and you can visit them there!
…SO VISIT US AT GUULABAA, AND SAY G’DAY TO OUR KOALAS!
conservation breeding program and immersive visitor experience! We’ve partnered with the Forestry Corporation of NSW and Bunya Land Council to create a unique, sustainable, forested koala breeding facility and visitor experience. ‘Guulabaa’ is a welcoming and thoughtfully designed nature precinct for visitors to relax, play and learn.
Come meet our adorable resident koalas and watch them being cared for in the clinic. You can even ‘adopt’ a koala to support their ongoing care! Explore on your own, book a guided tour, or join one of our friendly volunteers for a deeper dive into koala care and conservation. PLEASE NOTE!

WE HAVE EXCITING NEWS!
(HINT: IT’LL GIVE YOU THE WARM & FUZZIES)
In a world-first for koala conservation, we’re thrilled to announce that our first joeys from our Wild Breeding Program have been born! Every breeding koala pair has now produced a joey. These tiny bundles of joy and hope are a big win for the Program- and the future of wild koalas. There is still a long road ahead for these joeys before they are released into the wild. We’ll monitor their development as they become more independent from their mothers.
To learn more about our joeys' progress, join our Regular Giving program for special updates, visit us at Guulabaa, and follow Koala Conservation Australia on our social media channels. They do not yet have names, so stay tuned for opportunities to name a joey!

KOALA BREEDINGFROM WILD TO WILD
Breeding koalas is challenging, and those bred and raised in captivity struggle to survive in the wild. Our Wild Koala Conservation Breeding Program addresses this by breeding healthy wild koalas in a controlled but natural forest environment, giving their joeys the best chance of thriving once released. Developed with our research partner, Taronga Conservation Society, this program could play a vital role in saving the species.

Wanders that Wow
We’ve got some of the best walks around (see page 54). But when you say “family walk,” kids suddenly have the stamina of a potato. For little legs, start at Westport Park (maybe bribe with a treat from Hastings Coffee Co). The level path goes to Town Beach, past cafes, playgrounds, and a skate park. Push on to Oxley Beach and Flagstaff Hill Lookout if you can. Just remember, return trip! Other easy scenic strolls include the Beach to Beach Pathway in the Camden Haven, and Queens Lake Nature Reserve (see page 56).
Port Mac is surrounded by awe-inspiring National Parks and historic sites. Book a Ranger-guided Discovery Tour with NSW National Parks. They're fascinating and immersive. See page opp.
Hire a Kayak, SUP, Jet Ski or Surfboard
Paddle the river and watch for dolphins. Bonus: kids are too focused to bicker. Hire from Settlement Point Boatshed or Jordan’s Boat Shed. Surfboard Hire? Hit up Port Macquarie Surf School. If you feel the need for speed, check out Port Jet Cruises' Jet Ski hire & park.
Chasing Waterfalls (and Swimming Holes)
Adventurous? Head to Boorganna Nature Reserve on the Comboyne Plateau. Rawson Falls is a 5km return hike — steep in spots, but worth it. Pack swimmers for a dip at the base. Venture out a little further to Ellenborough Falls, NSW’s tallest single-drop waterfall. Viewing platform up top, 641 steps to the base (and back up!). For freshwater bliss, head to Wild Bull in Mount Boss State Forest — a hidden swimming hole near Wauchope, perfect for sunning on giant rocks. Also near Wauchope is Willi Willi National Park and the Wilson River Picnic Area, where you can wander to a nearby waterfall and swimming hole.
Get Artsy and/or Crafty
Sip and paint, throw clay, learn printmaking, or make candles. Try Aboriginal weaving, join a creative retreat, or check out art classes for all ages. Some local spots: Pinot & Picasso, The Seed, The Glasshouse, Cooeee Sistas, Lunico Candle Co, Alice’s Art, Craft & Paper, and Wauchope Creative Hub. Quilters— head to Stitched n Framed!

BEACHY BLISS
A (very) brief rundown of our favourite swimming, surfing, boating and camel riding spots! With miles of pristine coastline and waterways, there’s room for everyone to spread out and do their thing.
Surfing & Bodyboarding
Whether you shred or just like posing with a board for Instagram, Port Macquarie’s beaches have you covered. Town Beach & Flynns Beach are centrally located and you can usually hire a board, book a surf lesson, and grab a cuppa. North Lighthouse and North Shelly Beaches? Great for the more experienced surfers (and Lighthouse’s protected corner even works during a nor’easter). And if you’re into the kind of waves that can launch you into next week, Rainbow Beach will happily oblige in the right conditions. Its consistency makes it a favourite for when the Australian Surfing Championships come to town.
Beaches: For chilling, swimming, & splashing
Not a surfer? No problem. Some of us prefer not to be thrown around by saltwater. Families love Flynns Beach and Town Beach - both are patrolled with cafes and facilities nearby (essential). Shelly Beach has a lagoon area directly in front of the parking area, providing calmer waters, and you can BBQ or picnic in the shaded grassy areas - just don’t feed the giant monitor lizards who like to bask in the sun nearby! Lighthouse Beach is often patrolled at the northern end with a small playground and fab cafe at the Surf Club, with the southern end offering camel rides (strange but true). Meanwhile, Lake Cathie is a dream for anyone who wants to float, kayak, or watch their kids burn off energy… or head a little further south to Pilot Beach at Dunbogan for calm riverside waters in an idyllic setting.
Fishing & Boating: Don’t let the big one get away The Hastings River is prime fishing territory, whether you’re casting a line for bream and flathead or just here for the vibes. For deep-sea action, book a tour with Port Macquarie Fishing Charters. No gear? No worries—hire a boat (did someone say ‘BBQ boat’??), a kayak, or a Stand-Up Paddleboard. Or, head south to the Camden Haven, and you’ll find a fishing paradise! The Camden Haven River is serene and expansive, with miles of estuaries to catch a bite (and you’ll likely have your patch all to yourself).

WHALE TALES
Welcome to the ‘Humpack Highway’!
Every year, between May and November, 30,000+ humpbacks hug the coast of Port Mac and put on an amazing show. With primo cliffside viewing points like Tacking Point Lighthouse (hello, 360° ocean views), Perpendicular Point (gorgeous walk, dramatic views), and the chilled-out charm of Harry’s Lookout, you don’t have to look very hard to catch their distinctive spouts, breaches and flukeslapping (or 'lobtailing'). However, the best way to get close to these majestic creatures is out on the water.

Whale Watching Tours
For a true 'bucket-list' experience that get's you a front-row seat to the action, hop aboard one of Port Jet Cruises’ whale-watching tours. They’ve got a beautiful new purpose built vessel for whale watching in comfort,Ocean Rider. It’s one of three whale watching vessels in their fleet. There’s no better way to see the migration of whales and playful dolphins. You can also book a scenic cruise on the beautiful Hastings River. Their vessels are designed to glide through local conditions safely and easily, and they’ll get you out to the whales swiftly. Their boats are close to the mouth of the ocean, meaning you spend more time with the whales rather than spending long periods travelling through a large harbour or estuary. EAT&DRINK
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO EATING YOUR WAY THROUGH PORT MACQUARIE (Stretchy Pants Recommended)
THE STUNNED MULLET
Bougie Beach Vibes with a Side of Toothfish
Here’s the thing: if you go to Port Macquarie and don’t eat at The Stunned Mullet, you’ve totally missed out. This iconic fine diner has been serving up next-level eats and coastal glam since 2005, and honestly, it’s the bomb.
Sitting opposite Town Beach, this place is what happens when world-class cuisine hooks up with relaxed beachside vibes. It’s got that casual-luxe, minimalist Scandi-stylemeets-natural-timber aesthetic with comfy banquette seating. Divine. Bonus: the acoustics are actually good, so you don’t have to yell over your wine to be heard. We love a chic, considerate interior!
Now, let’s talk food. You’re not coming here for “just a salad.” You’re coming for watermelon carpaccio with green gazpacho and jalapeño salsa. You’re coming for the Glacier 51 toothfish (yes, it’s a thing, and yes, it’s life- changing) with shiitake suimono, black rice, and a dainty enoki crisp that’s basically edible couture. Oh, and the dressed oyster flight? Just order it and thank us later.
Then there’s the wine. Sweet baby grapevine, the wine list is ahhhmazing! Whether you know your Syrah from your shiraz or you’re just here for the bubbles, the team will make you feel like you belong. No wine snobbery here, just passionate, knowledgeable people who genuinely love their food and wine, and want you to love it too.
Open for lunch and dinner, 6 days a week, at 24 William St, Port Macquarie. Book now at thestunnedmullet.com.au

THE SCENIC PORT MACQUARIE COASTAL WALK
Putting your best foot forward - a definite ‘must do’ activity when in Port Macquarie is the Coastal Walk - a 9km easygrade walk that follows one of the most dramatic and inspiring coastlines in NSW. This walk features beaches, headlands, historic sites, rainforests and fantastic views.
Starting at Westport Park in town (map ref H8), all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, the walk takes approx 3.5 hours.
The Coastal Walk hugs the coastline and features boardwalks, steps for easier access to the headlands, viewing platforms and picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for viewing dolphins plus there is a variety of birdlife and the annual whale migration from May to November.
The Coastal Walk is the result of a partnership between Port MacquarieHastings Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with both organisations contributing infrastructure along the walk, and they've installed maps and signage on topics such as local history, whale watching and underwater ecology.
DIVISIONS OF GRANDEUR
The Coastal Walk is mostly easy grade and can be divided into four sections:
Westport Park to Town Beach - 2 km (flat)
Town Beach to Flynns Beach - 2.2 km
Flynns Beach to Shelly Beach - 2.2 km
Shelly Beach to Tacking Point Lighthouse - 2.7 km
A few tips will help to make your walk more enjoyable for you and others:
• Keep to the track and keep away from cliff edges.
• Please take rubbish with you or use bins provided.
• Dogs are not allowed on some sections and some beaches, including Town Beach, Flynns Beach, Shelly Beach and Sea Acres National Park.
Wheelchair and pram-friendly sections include Westport Park to Oxley Beach (south).
