HISTORY& HERITAGE

Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the Birpai people, the traditional owners of the land where we work and live, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We extend our respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who choose to call this region home.

DISCOVER PORT MACQUARIE’S RICH HISTORY & CULTURE

Port Macquarie is steeped in history, shaped by both its vibrant Aboriginal heritage and colonial past. The Birpai people have lived here for over 40,000 years, thriving in harmony with the land and its natural rhythms. European settlement began in the early 1800s, with John Oxley charting the area in 1818 and the establishment of one of Australia’s earliest penal colonies 1821. By the 1830s, free settlers had arrived, but this era brought great hardship to the Birpai people, who suffered immense loss through disease, displacement, and conflict. Today, Port Macquarie is a welcoming coastal town that honours its deep roots. From historic sites to immersive Birpai-guided tours, there’s plenty to explore.

Grab your mates or the family (and a designated driver) and do the loop of some legendary Aussie watering holes with friendly locals and cold beer. Start at the newly renovated Hastings Hotel, a classic heritage pub in the heart of Wauchope. Only five minutes out of Wauchope and one of the winners of Wotif’s Country Pub of the Year, is Beechwood Hotel. It’s even got a hitching rail for your horse (and you can organise to ride there with Hastings River Horse Riding). Beechwood Café & Bar is just up the road and has a great deck out the back. Then head west via the Oxley Highway to the Long Flat Pub, a true original ‘Travellers Rest’, packed with nostalgia and a great beer garden with views over the adjoining river flats (where you can camp, fish and swim).

Head south of Port to the Camden Haven for pristine coastline and waterways, or west to the Hastings Valley Hinterland for country hospitality. These drives can easily be done in an hour or so, but there’s so much to eat, see and do along the way, we recommend taking a day (or two) to soak up all the goodness!

THE KOALA HOSPITAL HAS MOVED TO GUULABAA (TEMPORARILY). SEE INFO BELOW!

Mission: Critical

Australia’s iconic koalas are in real danger. With habitat loss and disease on the rise, they could vanish from the wild within just 20 years.

At Koala Conservation Australia (KCA), we’re taking urgent action rescuing, rehabilitating, breeding, and educating to protect wild koalas and the habitats they depend on. With the help of our generous donors (and 200+ strong largely volunteer team), we’re tackling the big threats— habitat destruction, disease, and climate change—head-on.

The Port Macquarie region is home to one of Australia’s largest wild koala populations. It’s why KCA calls this place home—alongside our worldfamous Koala Hospital and the Wild Koala Breeding Program & Visitor Centre, and koala food plantations.

WE'VE

WELCOMED SIX

JOEYS

IN OUR FIRST YEAR!

LOVE IS IN THE AIR, BE ‘KOALA AWARE’!

After the incredible success of our first Wild Koala Breeding season, we’re loving watching our joeys grow and thrive! And now — breeding season is back, not just for our program but right across the region as wild koalas go looking for love. Between August and April, please remember to be koala aware — it’s the busiest (and riskiest) time of year for them. If you see a sick or injured koala, call our 24/7 rescue line on 6584 1522. And if you spot a healthy koala in the wild, log your sighting on our website — every report helps us map and protect local populations.

KOALA HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT

Our iconic Koala Hospital will reopen in mid-2026, with state-of-the art koala care facilities and a fantastic new visitor experience. In the meantime, you can visit our resident koalas at Guulabaa!

KOALA BREEDING - FROM WILD TO WILD

Breeding koalas isn’t easy—those raised in captivity often aren't suitable for release into the wild. That’s why KCA’s Wild Koala Conservation Breeding Program takes a different approach: breeding healthy wild koalas in a natural, forest-like environment so their joeys can thrive after release. Developed with our research partner, Taronga Conservation Society, this world-first program will play a vital role in securing the future of Australia’s koalas.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Koala Conservation Australia (KCA) runs the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, our Wild Koala Breeding Program, and vital Habitat Restoration, Education, Research, and Koala Food Tree projects. As a non-profit Australian charity, we rely on the currency of kindness — and the amazing efforts of over 200 dedicated volunteers.

JUST ADD WATER

SURF’S UP!

Port Macquarie’s got a wave for every level and every direction! From mellow rollers to powerful peaks, there’s a break with your name on it. Top spots? Town Beach (great in all swells, especially NW–SW winds), Flynns (all abilities + surf school), Lighthouse and Shelly Beaches (for those chasing more power), and Rainbow Beach (often hosts the Aussie Surf Championships). Further south, Lake Cathie can be epic when it’s on, while Grants Headland and North Haven are perfect when smaller swells roll in. Grab your board — the lineup’s calling

A (very) brief rundown of our favourite swimming, surfing, boating and camel riding spots! With miles of pristine coastline and waterways, there’s room for everyone to spread out and do their thing.

FISH, FLOAT & CRUISE

FAMILY BEACH DAYS

Pack the towels, sunscreen, and snacks — these beaches tick every box. Flynns and Town Beach for patrolled peace of mind. Shelly Beach is unpatrolled and can get a little wild, however it has a natural lagoon (straight in front of the car park) - great for floating and snorkelling when the tide is higher. The picnic area is gorgeous – just don’t feed the large monitor lizards that are often cruising around, looking for treats! Lighthouse Beach north is often patrolled (with camel rides on the southern section), and head south to beautiful Lake Cathie (SUPs, kayaks, floaties galore) for all-day fun. Groms love Rainbow Beach and it has a playground, BBQ area and café nearby. Down in Dunbogan, Pilot Beach is a family fave for its relatively calm waters and serene surrounds. Bliss.

Whether you’re a seasoned fisho or first-timer, the Hastings River is a dream. Launch from countless ramps, cast from the Break Wall and town wharfs, or drift out to Pelican Island for bream, flathead, and mud crabs. No gear? Hire boats (Jordans Boat Hire), kayaks, or rods locally. Want someone else to take the helm? Hop aboard a Port Jet Cruise - departing from Town Wharf - dolphins (almost) guaranteed! For high-octane fun, hire a jetski (Port Jet Cruises), try ‘foiling’ (Ozfoiling Port Mac), or chase big game offshore with Port Macquarie Fishing Charters (see ad opp. page). South in the Camden Haven, tranquil estuaries offer bites and blissful solitude. Check out Dunbogan Boat Shed or BJA Boat Hire for tinny and BBQ boat hire. And from MayNovember, the migrating whales hug our coastline and put on a show. Pick just about any headland and look out for telltale signs, or grab a front-row seat to the action with one of Port Jet Cruises' Whale Watching tours.

DRIVE THE BEACHES

Hit the sand and cruise the coast at North Beach, Lighthouse (south end), and sections of Rainbow, Grants, or Dunbogan Beaches. For maps and the requisite Beach Driving permit, head to pmhc.nsw.gov.au —and search beach driving.

WILD AT HEART

Adventure awaits on the North Shore, reached by car ferry at Settlement Point. Go off-grid at North Beach or explore the wild, rugged beauty of Queens Head Beach in Limeburners Creek National Park — rock formations, endless horizons, zero crowds. Feeling bold? Take the sandy, bumpy track to Point Plomer or Crescent Head. Love forests, waterholes and waterfalls? Cool off in clear cool waters underneath cascading waters at Waitui Falls (Comboyne State Forest) and Rawson Falls (Boorganna Nature Reserve). North-west of Wauchope is Mount Boss State Forest- home to Wild Bull campground, with barbecue facilities, a picnic shelter and a deep, cool waterhole just perfect for a summer dip. Sure, they’re a bit out of town (and make sure you’re prepared for the walk in), but it’s so worth it!

PAWS & PLAY

For happy hounds, head to Lighthouse Beach (south end) or Nobbys Beach — Port Mac’s favourite off-leash zones. Check out more pet-friendly info on page 54.

*Patrolled by Australian Lifeguards year-round at Town Beach only. Refer to the table above for other patrolled beaches, serviced in School Holidays only (excluding Winter). At other times volunteer life savers are on duty only when the red and yellow flags are displayed. For more information on beach safety please go to www.beachsafe.org.au

THE STUNNED MULLET

Bougie Beach Vibes with a Side of Toothfish

This destination-worthy fine diner has accolades for days - Chef's hats, TripAdvisor love, Wine List of theYear nods and more. It's got that slow-down, sip-up, soak-it-all-in vibe. So go. Dress up a little (or don't), order something adventurous and let the flavour take over. Sitting opposite Town Beach, this place is what happens when world-class cuisine hooks up with relaxed beachside vibes. It’s got that casual-luxe, minimalist Scandistyle-meets-natural-timber aesthetic with comfy banquette seating. Divine. Bonus: the acoustics are actually good, so you don’t have to yell over your wine to be heard. We love a chic, considerate interior! Now, let’s talk food. You’re not coming here for “just a salad.” You’re coming for watermelon carpaccio with green gazpacho and jalapeño salsa. You’re coming for the Glacier 51 toothfish (yes, it’s a thing, and yes, it’s life- changing) with shiitake suimono, black rice, and a dainty enoki crisp that’s basically edible couture. Oh, and the dressed oyster flight? Just order it and thank us later. Then there’s the wine. Sweet baby grapevine, the wine list is ahhhmazing! Whether you know your Syrah from your shiraz or you’re just here for the bubbles, the team will make you feel like you belong. No wine snobbery here, just passionate, knowledgeable people who genuinely love their food and wine, and want you to love it too.

FOR THE GIN-LOVERS

FYI: Did you know that Port Mac has become a bit of a Ginlovers hot spot? We’ve got three top-shelf distilleries. Maria River Distillery is a lush ex-dairy farm turned boutique gin haven. Then there’s Port Macquarie Distillery, hidden away in the industrial estate, with a super-cool Tasting Room & Bar. This isn’t your average sip stop. The honey and kumquat gins? Sublime. Last but not least, be sure to experience the portfolio from Three Wise Men Distillery. Their motto, "A wise man always brings gin". Aside from their impressive gin lineup, the local start-up boasts a whiskey gin and a saltbush vodka.

Enjoy a gin tasting or cocktail paired with mouth-watering antipasto platters (the farm-cured prosciutto is a favourite). Each spirit and liqueur is triple-distilled in small batches, using botanicals grown on the farm. You can shop online, book a tasting, or even join a Sunset Gin Cruise with Port Adventure Cruises from Town Wharf. And now, you can enjoy MRD’s much-loved Limoncello, Ginello, Mandarincello & Arancello Rosso at Little Shack, MooreBeer, Noona’s and Moo & Bean - in their specially created cocktails!

Maria River Distillery isn’t just a visit — it’s an experience that captures the true spirit of the Mid North Coast: relaxed, flavour-filled, and made to share. See ad opp.

PORT CITY BOWLING CLUB

It's Port City Bowling ClubBut not as you know it!

PORT MAC BY MOONLIGHT

Venture out by moonlight and you’ll discover that Port Mac is buzzing. From sundowners and river views to craft brews and late-night beats, there’s a whole scene waiting once the sun goes down. We’ve done the hard yards (you’re welcome) to bring you the lowdown on where to go — whether you’re chasing live tunes, a cocktail or two, or a dance floor.

LIVE MUSIC & DJS

All the groovy young things (and the young-at-heart) flock to Finnians Tavern, The Beach House (‘The Beachy’), Little Shack, The Bowl, The Tapp Bar, and for late night dance floor DJ action, The Macca (Port Macquarie Hotel) and Altitude Nightclub for regular live music and DJs. After something a little more chill? Try Moorebeer Brewing Co., or Black Duck Brewery for relaxed tunes and local brews. Chop 'n' Chill and The Beach House (Sunday Sessions) like to keep it live and local. If you’re chasing the big names, check out Finnians, the Glasshouse, Panthers, or Laurieton United Services Club for ticketed gigs and touring acts. Special shout out to Finnians - which has just won the Australian Hotelier’s Association Best Live Music Venue in NSW award - for the second year in a row!

SUNDOWNERS WITH A VIEW

Twilight on the Town Green is where it’s at. Start at the Beach House Hotel — Port Mac’s iconic waterfront hangout — and soak up that golden-hour glow. Stroll towards the Breakwall for cocktails under the fringed umbrellas at Little Shack, or go a little glam with river views at Zebu. Wander in the other direction and you’ll find Chop 'n' Chill spilling out onto Town Green, while Florence Jones Cheese & Wine Bar (overlooking Town Wharf) is serving up perfectly paired cheese and charcuterie with boutique wines and those sweet sunset views. Across the bridge, Rock Salt at the Marina, and The Tapp Bar at Panthers are popular options, and Sails Resort’s Boathouse Bar delivers Hamptonsstyle elegance by the water.

LOCAL BREWERS & DISTILLERS

If you prefer your nights served with hops, a hint of gin, or even limoncello, you’re in luck. Head to Moorebeer Brewing Co. or Black Duck Brewery for craft brews, good vibes, and regular live music (both tucked in the Lake Road Industrial Estate). Around the corner, Port Macquarie Distillery is pouring small-batch gin flights, cocktails and tasty nibbles in a sleek, urban-style space. And although the farm’s distillery isn’t open at night, you can still enjoy Maria River Distillery’s sublime ‘cellos’ in cocktails at Little Shack, Moorebeer, Noona’s & Moo & Bean, or book in for one of their Sunset Gin Cruises (see page 39).

COCKTAIL ALCHEMY

From riverside classics to cozy bar feels, Port Mac’s mixologists are shaking things up. Our faves? Birdrock Bar | Grill, The Beach House, Zebu, Little Shack, Stick Bar, Jimmy’s Bar, The Tapp Bar, Boathouse Bar, Moorebeer Brewing Co., or Bar Florian for creative twists on the classics — and good times guaranteed. If you’re in the Camden Haven area, we also love Moo & Bean, and the Royal Hotel at Kew.

THE SCENIC PORT MACQUARIE COASTAL WALK

Putting your best foot forward - a definite ‘must do’ activity when in Port Macquarie is the Coastal Walk - a 9km easygrade walk that follows one of the most dramatic and inspiring coastlines in NSW. This walk features beaches, headlands, historic sites, rainforests and fantastic views.

Starting at Westport Park in town (map ref H8), all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, the walk takes approx 3.5 hours.

The Coastal Walk hugs the coastline and features boardwalks, steps for easier access to the headlands, viewing platforms and picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for viewing dolphins plus there is a variety of birdlife and the annual whale migration from May to November.

The Coastal Walk is the result of a partnership between Port MacquarieHastings Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with both organisations contributing infrastructure along the walk, and they've installed maps and signage on topics such as local history, whale watching and underwater ecology.

DIVISIONS OF GRANDEUR

The Coastal Walk is mostly easy grade and can be divided into four sections:

Westport Park to Town Beach - 2 km (flat)

Town Beach to Flynns Beach - 2.2 km

Flynns Beach to Shelly Beach - 2.2 km

Shelly Beach to Tacking Point Lighthouse - 2.7 km

SCENIC STROLLS

THE PORT MACQUARIE COASTAL WALK

One of the most scenic walks in NSW can be completed in just a few hours! We've mapped it out section by section, including the wheelchair and pram-friendly parts (see prev. page) so you can plan to stroll the easier parts, or tackle the whole walk in one go.

KOOLOONBUNG CREEK NATURE RESERVE

In the centre of Port Macquarie, you'll find this Nature Reserve, which offers 52 hectares of boardwalks, walking tracks, picnic spots, and even a flying fox colony! Most boardwalk areas are wheelchair accessible.

OLD BOTTLEBUTT

Deep in Burrawan State Forest stands the world’s largest Red Bloodwood tree, over 200 years old and 16m around! A short (ie. great for younger kids), scenic 600m loop trail takes you there.

QUEENS LAKE NATURE RESERVE

Minutes from Bonny Hills, Queens Lake is a peaceful retreat for walking, fishing, paddling, picnicking and spotting koalas.

BOORGANNA NATURE RESERVE

On the Comboyne Plateau, explore 396 hectares of lush rainforest. The 2.7km trail to Rawson Falls is a birdwatcher’s paradise—bring your binoculars!

DOORAGAN NATIONAL PARK

On top of North Brother Mountain, take in jaw-dropping views over Queens Lake & Camden Haven. Hike a 30-minute rainforest loop, a 1-hour moderate trail, or the challenging Laurieton Track (2 hours).

KATTANG NATURE RESERVE

Cross the Dunbogan bridge to reach Perpendicular Point, where cliffs drop 40m to the ocean! Stroll the Flower Bowl Circuit (2km) - a blooming delight in spring - or trek the Perpendicular Point Walk (3.6km) for epic coastal views.

CROWDY BAY NATIONAL PARK

South of Camden Haven, Crowdy Bay offers pristine beaches, wetlands, wildflowers, and rainforest. Camp at Diamond Head or explore scenic dayuse areas and spectacular walks.

ACCESSIBILITY

Port Mac is for every body to enjoy. Scan the QR for handy info including the town centre Access Map which has been created to help those with a disability, as well as seniors & parents with prams. We’ve got wheelchair-friendly businesses across the region, as well as a Sandcruiser beach wheelchair at Town Beach, a wheelchair accessible fishing platform at Lake Cathie, all-access playgrounds and our Changing Place toilet in Short St (including hoist and adult change table).
