For more than 40,000 years the Birpai people have been the original inhabitants and occupants of the Greater Port Macquarie region. Relying on the land and waterways to sustain themselves, the Birpai people made temporary huts along the river and around the lakes allowing them to follow the seasonal food trail. The region’s richly diverse landscapes together with the subtropical climate ensured that the community thrived in harmony with the environment for many thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans.

Today, with its own unique heritage, Port Macquarie is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the NSW coast, and also one of the fastest growing regions in NSW. Discovered by John Oxley in 1818 and named after the Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, our first visitors were convicts sent to the Port Macquarie penal settlement in 1821 to serve time for secondary offences. The town was built by those convicts and overseen by military officers of the 48th Regiment. Port Macquarie was opened up to free

THE HISTORIC COURTHOUSE was designed by colonial architect James Barnet and built in 1869 by local builders Butler and Bourne costing £1,091 and nine shillings. This building, classified by the National Trust, served the community for 117 years and was restored in 1993. Mon-Fri 10am-3pm, and Sat 10am-1pm

Wauchope &Hinterland

Wauchope

(Pronounced war-hope) - 15 minutes west of Port Macquarie. Surrounded by Australia’s most extensive Blackbutt forest, it was here in the mid 1800s that pioneers made the town famous as a timber town. Today, Wauchope is the gateway to the hinterland and has many unique businesses and fabulous boutique shops with friendly old fashioned service. As an RV Friendly town, and the first Motor Cycle Friendly Town in NSW, Wauchope makes for a great stop or a day out.

Hinterland

To the west of Port Macquarie is true paradise, with breathtaking scenery of rolling hills and lush rainforest. The Hinterland is a truly spectacular sight and is popular with bush walkers, four-wheel drive enthusiasts or those just keen to explore. Take time to discover this region with a day trip or two. Perhaps stay overnight in one of the many cottages or B&B’s scattered along the way. We have outlined some trails you may like to try, or you may prefer to make up your own, but whatever you do don’t miss this vast area of natural beauty.

Comboyne

A tranquil place of rolling green pastures, forests, streams and waterfalls located about a 1 hour drive from Port Macquarie. Here you’ll find the Boorganna Nature Reserve, a large remnant of the forest that once covered the whole plateau. There is a fantastic 2.7km walking track that starts at the picnic area where you can see many differing bird species and lush rainforest plants. Allow a few hours for this. While in Comboyne,

you must drive a further 25kms to visit Ellenborough Falls in the Manning Valley - a truly amazing sight as water plunges into a gorge 200m below. There is a viewing platform and a timber walkway for those who would like to walk to the bottom of the falls. Whilst the road is mostly unsealed, it is definitely worth the trip (allow around 45 minutes for the drive from Comboyne). They have two walks, one 500m to the lower falls, and another 700m to the knoll plus there is a Kiosk and picnic facilities which makes it a great lunchtime stop.

Lorne and Kendall

Whilst part of the Camden Haven, these two small towns also form part of the Hinterland. Kendall ‘The Poets Village’ - is a quiet village with a population of 250 people located just off the Pacific Highway, at Kew. Its vibrancy, diversity and charm fuel Kendall’s community spirit and have earned it a reputation as a great place to live and visit. Named after the Australian poet Henry Kendall, it is a growing community, with its famous golf course, craft and antique stores as well as numerous other tourist attractions.

Camden Haven

Camden Haven

The collective name given for the communities scattered along the Camden Haven River including Laurieton, North Haven and Dunbogan at the mouth of the river, stretching to Kew, Kendall, Lorne and Comboyne further inland. With cafes and shopping combined with local charm, the Camden Haven is a wonderful place for a day or a week. It is all about water activities and the lake and river provide plenty of opportunity for fishing, boating and walking along the foreshores. Enjoy the peace and quiet on this magnificent river or grab your fishing rod and throw a line in, you’ll certainly attract the attention of some quizzical pelicans!

Laurieton, North Haven and Dunbogan

North Brother Mountain overlooks Laurieton, North Haven and Dunbogan. At the summit (490 metres), in Dooragan National Park, is the North Brother Lookout (accessible via sealed roads), which is not to be missed, offering a superb view over the coastline, the lakes and the mouth of the Camden Haven River. It is one of Australia’s most impressive coastal panoramas. The area is characterised by large stands of rainforest which are rich in native fauna and flora.Take a picnic as they

have excellent facilities. Three walks of varying length and difficulty are available if you are feeling energetic. The mountain supports a wide range of vegetation communities, including some of the best examples of old growth blackbutt forest in NSW and pockets of sub-tropical rainforest that provide habitat for gliders, bats and koalas.

Pilot Beach

A fantastic and secluded beach for the kids, as it is naturally protected. It also has excellent BBQ facilities and a playground area with showers to rinse off.

Crowdy Bay National Park

Take the road from Laurieton and head south and you will enter the northern section of Crowdy Bay National Park. This area of parkland was first sighted by Captain Cook in 1770. He saw Aborigines standing on what is now known as Diamond Head and named the promontory Indian Head. In more recent times a man named Ernie Metcalf lived on the headland. He was the subject of ‘The Man on the Headland’ written by Kylie Tennant. He built a hut for Tennant who subsequently gifted it to the park. It was restored in 1980 and is now one of the park’s attractions. Diamond Head itself is quite striking.

It rises 113 metres and is edged by the wetlands and heathlands of the coastal plain. The park is ideal for bushwalking, birdwatching, fishing (from the rock platforms you can catch groper, bream, tailor and drummer) and swimming.

For surfing, the best spots are Town, Flynns, Lighthouse, Rainbow and North Haven beaches. The Breakwall at Town Beach works best with swell from the south through to the north-east. The Middle has some powerful lefts and is for the experienced surfer only, while Flagstaff is the protected southern headland of Town Beach. At Flynns Beach, waves can be found with swells from the south to east with offshore north-west winds through to southeast winds. Lighthouse Beach has a protected northern corner that handles north to north-east swell. Further south, Cathie is an open beach, which can offer powerful waves with south to east swell. Rainbow Beach is a protected southern headland with a right point break and beach breaks. Grants Headland picks up the smallest of swells and is best in the north-east swell with west to north-east winds. North Haven (Grants Beach) offers beach breaks with the best waves south to east swell, and works best with west to southeast winds. The bar can hand out some large waves but tidal flow from the river affects the wave quality. (Surfing information from PMQ Surf School). If you are looking for calmer waters and a great place to take the little ones, there are couple of options to choose from - all of which require parent supervision. With its rocky outcrop, Shelly Beach creates a somewhat protected lagoon and is ideal for the littlies. Other good areas for kids include Settlement Point, Lake Cathie lagoon (when open to the ocean) and Pilot Beach in Dunbogan. Town Beach is also good with a long break and plenty of rock pools towards the point for the kids to explore. Beach fishing is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Rocky Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach and Grants Beach are all popular spots. If you want somewhere to get your 4WD dirty, try North Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Rainbow Beach, Grants Beach or Dunbogan Beach – all of which have a 4WD entrance. A licence is required for recreational fishing (service.nsw.gov.au) and you also require a permit to drive on the approved 4WD beaches. Beach driving permits are available from the Visitor Information Centre located at the Glasshouse, Cnr of Clarence & Hay Streets. (see page 26 for Beach Guide).

Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail Wins Gold for ‘Tourist Attractions’ 2022 NSW Tourism Awards

Established 2014, Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail has won an award each year in the NSW Tourism Awards since 2015 but winning Gold in 2022 for Tourist Attractions is “the best of the best” according Hello Koalas founder, Margret Meagher.

There are 83 one metre high fibreglass Hello Koalas sculptures painted by local artists on the Trail. The 84th Hello Koalas sculpture is ‘The Big Koala .. Spirit of All Koalas’ (2.5 metres).

The Big Koala is the landmark sculpture for the new tourism and educational precinct called ‘Guulabaa, Place of Koala’ being developed by Forestry Corporation of NSW in the Cowarra State Forest, corner of Oxley Highway and Burrawan Forest Drive.

Manufactured by fibreglass specialist John Belfield at John’s River and painted by local artist Pauline Roods, ‘The Big Koala’ features a design which includes 31 koalas living happily in the forest.

It is estimated that in the first month, 15,000 people visited The Big Koala which welcomes all visitors to Guulabaa, Place of Koala. Nearby is the amazing WildNets adventure in the forest canopy (www.wildnets.com.au).

Coming soon is Koala Conservation Australia’s wild koala breeding centre and Bunyah Aboriginal Land Council’s art gallery and café.

Sponsored by Regional Australia Bank, The Big Koala has also been made possible by supporters who have purchased the limited edition of Monopoly Port Macquarie, with its Hello Koalas token, available exclusively from Hello Koalas Gift Shop.

A facial cast of this super-sized koala resides in Hello Koalas Gift Shop, at 16/10 Bellbowrie Street, Port Macquarie along with Hello Koalas customised merchandise including new products featuring The Big Koala.

There are also 16 Hello Koalas sculptures on display and of special interest is Hello Koalas’ first children’s book, ‘Lola had a Dream’ written and illustrated by local artist Francessca O’Donnell. What a Koala Treasure Trove!

Beach Coastal Walk

Putting your best foot forward - a definite ‘must do’ activity when in Port Macquarie is the Coastal Walk - a 9km easy-grade walk that follows one of the most dramatic and inspiring coastlines in NSW. This walk features beaches, headlands, historic sites, rainforests and fantastic views.

Starting at Westport Park in town (page 72 map ref H8), all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, the walk takes approx 3.5 hours.

The Coastal Walk hugs the coastline and features boardwalks, steps for easier access to the headlands, viewing platforms and picnic shelters. Opportunities abound for viewing dolphins plus there is a variety of birdlife and the annual whale migration from May to November.

The Coastal Walk is the result of a partnership between Port MacquarieHastings Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), with both organisations contributing infrastructure along the walk.

For your convenience, Council and the NPWS have installed quality signage on topics such as local history, whale watching and underwater ecology. Maps are also featured to make it easy for locals and visitors to enjoy and use the walk.

The Coastal Walk is mostly easy grade and can be divided into four sections:

WESTPORT PARK TO TOWN BEACH - 2 KM (FLAT)

TOWN BEACH TO FLYNNS BEACH - 2.2 KM

FLYNNS BEACH TO SHELLY BEACH - 2.2 KM

SHELLY BEACH TO TACKING POINT LIGHTHOUSE - 2.7 KM

A few tips will help to make your walk more enjoyable for you and others:

• Keep to the track and keep away from cliff edges.

• Beware of traffic when close to the road.

• Please take rubbish with you or use bins provided.

• Dogs are not allowed in the Sea Acres section anywhere south of Shelly Beach.

• Remember to take water and have adequate sun protection.

PRAM FRIENDLY SECTIONS include Westport Park to Oxley Beach (south), and Kenny Walk (Nobbys Beach to south Shelly Beach).

The Koala Hospital

The Koala Hospital adjacent to Roto House is the world’s only hospital dedicated solely to the care and preservation of wild koalas. Founded by Jean and Max Starr in 1973, the hospital is entirely self-funded from donations, bequests, adoptions and their shop. It is managed by the charitable organisation, the Koala Conservation Australia, only has seven paid staff, 200 volunteers and hosts one overseas volunteer for one month every month - a position that is in very high demand. Facilities include a treatment clinic, eight internal intensive care units, six outdoor intensive care units and 30 rehabilitation yards. There are a small number of non releasable koala patients who are permanent residents (eight in total) that are available for the public to see.

The Koala Hospital is a research institution that collaborates and works with a number of universities and other institutions. Up until about five years ago, this unique Hospital would treat up to 200-250 sick and/or injured koalas each year, and successfully rehabilitate and return about 60- 70% of their admissions to the wild. Koalas are admitted from all over NSW. Primary reasons for admission to care are being hit by cars, dog attacks and the bacterial infection Chlamydia which

causes urogenital disease (commonly called wet bottom) and ocular (conjunctivitis). Other reasons include bushfires and issues that occur due to loss of habitat. In particular, the devastating bushfires across the region in 2019/2020 had a huge impact on the local koala population and the hospital was inundated with injured koalas. How can we help the koala population? We need to ensure their genetic diversity is conserved by protecting their habitat, reducing vehicle strikes, dog attacks and disease - this is fundamental to their population health. How are the admitted Koalas named? Usually by the person who found them and the location in which they were found. Of the 900 species of eucalypt trees that grow in Australia, approximately only 60 of them across Australia are ‘food trees’ so koalas’ habitat is determined by the availability of these trees.

Australian Music legend John Williamson is also passionate about saving koalas. John has been a patron of Koala Conservation Australia ever since he met one of their founders, the late Jean Starr, in the early eighties.

During a visit to the Koala Hospital, he witnessed an emergency rescue call come in. The entire experience was so impressive for John that it inspired him to write the song “Good Bye Blinky Bill”, which became enormously popular throughout Australia. He very generously donated the proceeds from his song to Koala Conservation Australia. John raised a considerable amount of money that enabled the Koala Hospital to build a new “John Williamson Wing” which houses their intensive care unit.

The Koala Hospital has plans for a multi-million dollar redevelopment after receiving an overwhelming number of public donations as well as grant funding from the NSW Government.

The Koala Hospital is open daily from 8.30am to 4pm. Wandering guides are on site to answer questions and tell visitors about koalas.

Visitors to the Koala Hospital can view the clinic through a large window and sometimes see a koala being treated by the inhouse vet. You can also observe the resident koalas in their enclosures, however the koalas in recovery are behind screens.

Did you know that 100,000 tourists visit the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie each year? Admission is free and donations are welcome - you can even adopt a koala!
