The people’s responses are in bold.

THE OPENING ACCLAMATION

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God’s Kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

The Book of Common Prayer, 355

The Book of Common Prayer, 255

Let us pray. Almighty Father, whose blessed Son before his passion prayed for his disciples that they might be one, as you and he are one: Grant that your Church, being bound together in love and obedience to you, may be united in one body by the one Spirit, that the world may believe in him whom you have sent, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

The people are seated.

THE FIRST READING

A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy.

Deuteronomy 10:17-21

For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who is not partial and takes no bribe, who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and who loves the strangers, providing them with food and clothing. You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. You shall fear the Lord your God; him alone you shall worship; to him you shall hold fast, and by his name you shall swear. He is your praise; he is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things that your own eyes have seen.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Sung by the choir.

PSALM 145:1-9

I will exalt you, O God my King, and bless your Name for ever and ever.

Every day will I bless you and praise your Name for ever and ever.

Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; there is no end to his greatness.

One generation shall praise your works to another and shall declare your power.

I will ponder the glorious splendor of your majesty and all your marvelous works.

Chant: Robert Kennedy

They shall speak of the might of your wondrous acts, and I will tell of your greatness.

They shall publish the remembrance of your great goodness; they shall sing of your righteous deeds.

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and of great kindness.

The Lord is loving to everyone and his compassion is over all his works.

A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews.

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old—and Sarah herself was barren—because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, ‘as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.’

All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The people stand as they are able. Sung by all.

HYMN AT THE SEQUENCE

The Hymnal 1982, 603

When Christ was lifted from the earth St. Botolph

The people remain standing and turn toward the Gospel.

THE HOLY GOSPEL

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Matthew 5:43-48

Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher.

THE SERMON

The Reverend Deacon Emily Cardwell Silence may be kept.

The people stand as they are able.

THE NICENE CREED

The Book of Common Prayer, 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The people stand or kneel.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each intercession,

Let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

The presider offers a concluding prayer.

Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, “Peace I give to you; my own peace I leave with you:” Regard not our sins, but the faith of your Church, and give to us the peace and unity of that heavenly City, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit, you live and reign, now and for ever. Amen.

The people may kneel.

CONFESSION OF SIN & ABSOLUTION

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept.

The Book of Common Prayer, 360

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The presider offers the absolution.

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE PEACE

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

And also with you.

The people greet one another with a sign of God’s peace and are seated.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & OFFERTORY SENTENCE

THE HOLY COMMUNION

THE OFFERTORY

The people remain seated while an offering is received to support the Episcopal Migration Ministries. In response to the encouragement of our new Presiding Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe, today’s offering will go to Episcopal Migration Ministries. Episcopal Migration Ministries, a ministry of The Episcopal Church, welcomes refugees, educates communities, and mobilizes congregations to advocate for the protection and rights of all refugees and migrants. Information about this long-standing ministry of The Episcopal Church may be found at episcopalmigrationministries.org.

Sung by the choir.

ANTHEM AT THE OFFERTORY

Draw us in the Spirit's tether

Draw us in the Spirit's tether; for when humbly, in thy name, two or three are met together, Thou art in the midst of them: Alleluya! Alleluya! Touch we now thy garment's hem.

Harold W. Friedell (1905-1958)

As the brethren used to gather in the name of Christ to sup, then with thanks to God the Father break the bread and bless the cup, Alleluya! Alleluya! So knit thou our friendship up.

All our meals and all our living make as sacraments of thee, that by caring, helping, giving, we may true disciples be. Alleluya! Alleluya! We will serve thee faithfully.

HYMN AT THE PRESENTATION

The Hymnal 1982, 593 Lord, make us servants of your peace Dickinson College

The people remain standing.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Book of Common Prayer, Prayer B The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ our Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS The Hymnal 1982, S-125 Holy, holy, holy Richard Proulx

The people stand or kneel as they are able.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection,

We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

The presider breaks the bread in silence.
