Ding Yi Music Company opens the 2025/26 season with “Traversing”, a concert that bridges ancient and modern, East and West, promising a night of breathtaking artistry.

Led by Ding Yi’s Chief Artistic Mentor Tsung Yeh and Resident Conductor Wong De Li, Dedric, the ensemble presents a rich tapestry of Chinese chamber music classics and innovations, including “Glory” by renowned composer Wang Jianmin, a piece specially commissioned for Ding Yi’s 15th anniversary.

Joining the stage is William Wei, laureate of the prestigious 2015 Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition. With masterful technique and expressive depth, he will perform “Violin Concerto No. 1” by Zhao Jiping, newly adapted by Cultural Medallion recipient Law Wai Lun, alongside Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso Op. 28”, arranged by celebrated local composer Phoon Yew Tien. Blending Chinese and Western traditions, these works promise an unforgettable musical journey.

The concert also features the world premiere of the chamber adaptation of “Rama”, composed by Young Artist Award recipient Wang Chenwei and performed by Ding Yi pipa musician Chua Yew Kok. Inspired by the 2,000-year-old Indian epic Rāmāyana, this evocative work brings to life the trials and triumphs of Prince Rama through the expressive timbre of the pipa.

年伊莉莎白女王国际音乐大赛桂冠、备受 国际瞩目的新生代小提琴家魏靖仪,以其精湛的技 艺和细腻的情感倾情演绎由赵季平作曲、新加坡文 化奖得主罗伟伦移植的《第一小提琴协奏曲》,以及 本地著名作曲家潘耀田移植的卡米尔·圣桑西方古 典精品《引子与回旋随想曲》。中西结合,必将为观 众带来一场如梦似幻的音乐体验。

Welcome to Ding Yi Music Company’s 2025/26 season! It is my pleasure to continue leading the ensemble in this new season, delving deeper into the boundless possibilities of Chinese chamber music while driving innovation and artistic growth.

We remain true to our original vision — discovering and defining the unique Singaporean voice in Chinese chamber music while uniting the talents of conductors, musicians, composers, and artistic collaborators to shape the future classics of the genre.

As Singapore’s very own Chinese chamber ensemble, Ding Yi’s spirit lies in promoting Chinese chamber music, challenging ourselves, and creating outstand works in the pursuit of our unique voice and identity. Through a deep connection to our cultural roots, we strive to discover a distinctive artistic direction that is both innovative and true to our heritage.

This season is particularly special as it coincides with Singapore’s 60th birthday. To commemorate this milestone, we have curated a series of concerts featuring Cultural Medallion recipients, Young Artist Award recipients, and emerging young talents— showcasing the finest works of Singapore’s most outstanding composers and artists.

Our season opens with Traversing, a concert that bridges past and present, East and West, setting the stage for a season of exploration and breakthroughs in Chinese chamber music. The final chapter of our cultural exploration series, Disappearing… Series: The Last Episode,

pays tribute to the vanishing crafts of lion dancehead-making,rattanweaving,andMalay songkokcrafting.FeaturingmusicbyCultural Medallion recipient Eric Watson and rising composer Tan Yu Ting, this concert brings artisan traditions to life through Chinese chambermusic.Meanwhile, ECOncert returns for its third edition, once again immersing audiencesinamulti-layereddialoguebetween music, ecology, and sustainability through contemporary works by Young Artist Award recipient Robert Zhao Renhui and Malaysian composerYiiKahHoe.

Beyond our local stage, Ding Yi continues to expand its international collaborations, working with artists from around the world to share the unique artistry of Chinese chambermusic.Thisseason’sfeaturedartists include Taiwan-born, Berlin-based violinist William Wei, banhu virtuoso Hu Yu from China, Taiwanese composer Hannah Hsieh, MalaysiancomposerYiiKahHoe,andamong others.

Composed by composer Wang Jianmin, Glory is a testament to Ding Yi’s steadfast commitment, contribution, and achievements in the international Chinese chamber music scene.

Snow of June

《六月雪》

Inspired by one of the famous tragedy Chinese opera called Dou E Yuan which was written by Guan Hanqing (1200 – 1300), a famous Chinese opera writer in Yuan dynasty, the composer mixed both Chinese and western instruments in this piece, with Guanzi as the principle solo instrument, and the Sheng, Cello, Pipa and Percussion jointed together to express composer’s impressions of the tragedy story. The composer also used a lot of elements of traditional Chinese opera such as recitation, melody and percussion in this work.

有感于元代著名戏剧家关汉卿( 1210–1300 )的悲 剧名作《窦娥冤》,作曲家在创作这部重奏作品时以 西洋乐器和中国民族乐器为组合,以管子为主奏乐 器,加上笙、大提琴、琵琶和打击乐,对这一悲剧故 事表达了作曲家自己的印象。作曲家在曲中大量使 用了中国传统戏曲中的元素,如:(模仿)念白、拖 腔、打击乐等。

Rama is a Pipa concerto inspired by the Rāmāyana, an Indian epic in Sanskrit that has profoundly influenced the culture and performing arts of South Asia and Southeast Asia for over 2,000 years. The Pipa solo portrays the protagonist, Rāma, with the orchestra accompanying and chanting Sanskrit verses to depict the main events of the story across three movements.

I.Book of Ayodhyā (Ayodhyā Kānda)

The piece opens in a festive mood as Ayodhyā city prepares for the coronation of prince Rāma, whom the old king has just appointed to succeed him. As the people sing praises of Rāma’s virtues, queen Kaikeyī (represented by the Banhu), who is not Rāma’s birth mother, invokes two boons granted to her by the king long ago—demanding Rāma’s exile for 14 years and the coronation of her own son. The king is devastated but cannot break his word. Rāma calmly accepts her demands to uphold the king’s honour. Rāma’s wife and brother choose to join him in exile, while the citizens reluctantly bid farewell to the trio.

II.Book of the Forest (Aranya Kānda)

The Gaohu’s lyrical, bittersweet melody represents Sītā, Rāma’s wife. The themes of Rāma and Sītā interact in counterpoint, expressing their love. One day, their peaceful life in the forest is disrupted by the appearance of a beautiful golden deer, represented by the Chinese flute. Sītā is mesmerised and asks Rāma to capture the deer. It leads him further and further away until Rāma finally shoots it, revealing its true form as a demon, represented by the Suona. The demon imitates Rāma’s voice and calls out for help (represented by the Zhongruan), thus luring Rāma’s brother away from Sītā, leaving her defenceless. Rāma realises the ploy and rushes back to his forest hut, only to find that Sītā has already vanished.

III.Book of War (Yuddha Kānda)

Rāma and his allies from the monkey kingdom track Sītā to the island of Lankā, where she is held captive by the ten-headed demon king Rāvana, represented by the wind instruments. Rāma and Rāvana’s armies engage in a fierce battle, culminating in Rāma firing a magical arrow that kills Rāvana. Rāma and Sītā are reunited and return to Ayodhyā, where they are welcomed by elated citizens. With his exile now complete, Rāma ascends the throne and rules over a prosperous kingdom of virtuous people.

Rama was composed by Wang Chenwei in 2016 as a commission from Pipa soloist Chua Yew Kok, who also premiered the concerto.

高胡的凄美旋律是罗摩之妻悉达的主题。罗摩与悉 达的主题对位性的交融表现了夫妻间的恩爱。他们 在森林里过着简单平静的生活。有一天,一只奇妙 的金鹿出现在他们屋前。悉达被迷住了,叫罗摩赶 紧抓住它。金鹿引着罗摩越跑越远,直到罗摩拔箭 射中它,使它原形毕露——原来那是只妖怪伪装的 (由唢呐代表)。妖怪模仿罗摩的嗓音高声呼救(由

中阮代表),以从悉达身边引走罗摩的弟弟。此时, 毫无防卫的悉达单独留在屋中。当罗摩发现中计赶 回屋子,悉达已经不见踪影。

三、《战斗篇》

罗摩与猴国的盟军进攻楞伽岛解救被囚禁的悉达, 与十首魔王的军队(由吹管组代表)激烈交战。最

The Seven Sages

《七贤风骨》

“The seven sages” - for seven Chinese traditional musical instruments: Guzheng - Ji Kang, Ruan - Ruan Ji, Pipa - Ruan Xian, Sheng -ShanTao, Dizi / Xiao - Xiang Xiu, HuqinLiu ling percussion - Wang Rong. The seven sages, under the bamboo groves, indulged themselves in nature, making poems, singing and playing instruments to thoroughly express their feelings and emotions. They were free and unique, with their spirits fully conveyed in literature and music.

Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso, Op 28 《引子与回旋随想曲》

This piece was composed by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns at the age of 25 for violin and orchestra. It was dedicated to the renowned violinist Pablo Sarasate and premiered with the composer himself conducting. Although labeled as a rondo, the piece is much freer in form compared to traditional rondos—perhaps a reflection of its “capricious” nature. The composition showcases the violin’s virtuosic techniques, making it both a celebrated and challenging work in the violin repertoire.

“Violin Concerto No. 1 was commissioned by the National Centre for the Performing Arts in 2017. The piece’s structure basically follows the principles of sonata form, but does not rigidly adhere to them and adjust according to the needs of the music. This prose-like piece carries a meaning of universal love with a lively subtheme and a development section featuring inner conflict, which is ultimately attributed to the true, the good, and the beautiful within love.”

Tsung Yeh joined the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) as Music Director in January 2002. Under his direction, SCO expanded its repertoire with innovative works such as Marco Polo and Princess Blue—A Symphonic Epic, Instant is a Millennium–A Musical Conversation with Tan Swie Hian, The Grandeur of Tang, Thunderstorm, Admiral of the Seven Seas and Awaking. In 2013, Tsung Yeh was awarded the Cultural Medallion, the highest accolade in the arts in Singapore. He is also the advisor to the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra.

As Music Director of Singapore’s National Day Parade 2007, Tsung Yeh conceptualised a symphonic music structure with supreme, textured virtuosity that incensed the national pride in the air. His illustrious career spans beyond Singapore; he served as the Music Director of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra (SBSO) in the United States from 1988 to 2016 and holds the esteemed title of Conductor Laureate by the SBSO Association. His international collaborations include renowned orchestras from San Francisco, Tokyo, Shanghai, and more.

In the realm of education, Tsung Yeh is a distinguished professor at the China Conservatory of Music and a guest professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He imparts his expertise through conducting workshops and masterclasses

叶聪在指挥教育界亦极富盛誉。他近年来的新任 命,包括中央民族乐团首席客座指挥,江苏大剧院 艺术委员会委员和上海音乐学院贺绿汀中国音乐 高等研究院学术委员。他也曾到北京、上海、香港、 台湾和新加坡多次举办指挥大师班。

Resident Conductor of the Ding Yi Music Company, Music Director of the Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra, and Nanyang Collective, Wong De Li, Dedric is an accomplished conductor with a passion for traditional Chinese music.

A recipient of the National Arts Council Arts Scholarship in 2014, Dedric was featured in The Straits Times Scholars’ Choice in 2016 and served as a panellist for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth’s Singapore Youth Action Plan in 2019. He earned his Master’s in Orchestral Conducting from the China Conservatory of Music under Professor Yang You Qing, guided by Maestro Tsung Yeh. He also holds a Diploma in Music (Suona Performance) from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), where he was mentored by Singapore Cultural Medallion recipient Dr Tay Teow Kiat.

Dedric’s achievements include guest-conducting the China Sze Chuan Tian Zi Ensemble, Suzhou Symphony Orchestra String Ensemble, and adjudicating the Singapore National Chinese Music Competition in 2018.

Representing Singapore internationally, Dedric has performed in countries including China, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Cambodia.

CONDUCTOR 黄德励,驻团指挥

His contributions to Chinese music have earned him the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Arts and Cultural Bursary twice, in 2004 and 2006.

Dedric is an executive member of the Singapore Chinese Music Federation, Vice President of the Suona and Guan Society of Singapore, and Ensemble Director of the School of the Arts (SOTA) Chinese Chamber Ensemble.

黄德励现任鼎艺团常任指挥、亚洲文化交响乐团与 南洋集社音乐总监,是一位致力于华乐传承与发展 的优秀指挥家。

2014 年,他荣获新加坡国家艺术理事会艺术奖学 金,并于 2016 年获《海峡时报》“杰出学者专访”报 道。2019 年,他受邀担任新加坡文化、社区及青年 部“青年行动计划”论坛小组成员。他于中国音乐 学院指挥系取得指挥硕士学位,师从杨又青教授, 并受国际知名指挥家叶聪大师的指导。早期,他于 2007 年毕业于南洋艺术学院音乐系(主修唢呐演 奏),并接受新加坡文化奖得主郑朝吉博士的指挥 指导。

黄德励多次受邀客席指挥,如中国四川天姿国乐 团、苏州交响乐团弦乐团等,并于 2018 年担任新加 坡全国华乐比赛评审。

近年来,他频繁代表新加坡参加国际艺术节,足迹 遍及中国、英国、加拿大、澳大利亚、菲律宾、马来西 亚、印度尼西亚及柬埔寨。他曾两次荣获新加坡福 建会馆艺术奖学金(2004、2006),并积极推动华乐 发展。

他现为新加坡华乐总会执行委员、新加坡唢呐与 管子协会副会长及新加坡艺术学院华乐室内乐团 总监。

Chua Yew Kok is a pipa musician in Ding Yi Music Company, which he co-founded in 2007.

An expressive, highly versatile performer, Chua has forged an impressive career as an awardwinning pipa instrumentalist and an educator.

He picked up the pipa at the age of 14 and went on to give standout solo performances in Singapore and internationally, with notable ensembles and orchestras such as the Singapore Chinese Orchestra.

Among various international awards, Chua won first prize at the Singapore 1998 National Chinese Music Competition in the pipa open category. He was also accorded the National Arts Council Young Artist Award in 2013, Singapore’s highest award for arts practitioners aged 35 and below.

He earned a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2006, and a master’s degree in arts from the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Committed to preserving Singapore’s traditional Chinese music and its legacy for future generations, Chua teaches pipa at various schools as a sectional instructor and serves on the secretariat of Singapore Pipa Society.

CHUA YEW KOK, PIPA 蔡友国,琵琶

蔡友国是鼎艺团的琵琶乐演奏家,也是公司于 2007 年成立的创始人之一。

最让他印象深刻的是,见证了乐团才刚成立不久便 获得了 2008 年全国华乐比赛冠军的骄人成绩。鼎 艺团紧接着于 2009 年赢得了在威尔斯举行的兰戈 伦国际艺术音乐节最高荣誉奖,也在 2011 年赢得了 上海之春国际音乐节银牌奖。

多才多艺加上精湛的演奏技巧奠定了他成为得奖 琵琶演奏家和教育师的地位。蔡友国在 14 岁开始接 触琵琶,从此就经常在海内外与知名的乐团如新加 坡华乐团表演琵琶独奏。

在1998 年全国华乐比赛中,蔡友国在琵琶公开组比 赛获得了冠军。他也在 2013 年获颁新加坡国家艺术 理事会青年艺术家奖,这是一项颁发给 35 岁以下艺 术工作者的最高荣誉。

蔡友国在 2006 年毕业于南洋艺术学院并获得音乐 系荣誉学位之后,也荣获北京中国音乐学院的硕士 学位。

为了保留新加坡传统华乐的传承,他在学校教导年 轻学子学习琵琶弹奏,让年轻一代有机会接触传统 华乐,而达到代代相传的目的。他目前也于新加坡 琵琶协会秘书处任职。

Laureate of the 2015 Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition, William Wei is recognised as one of Taiwan’s most promising violinists. Known for his natural musicality and refined sensibility, Wei’s performances exude a vibrant dynamism. Described by Le Soir (Belgium) as an artist who “burns all his passion and freedom in the music till the end,” Wei has also been praised by WestDeutsche Zeitung for being both a virtuosic and sensitive interpreter.

Wei’s 2025 season begins with US duo recital tour with Evan Wong. He will also return to the Weiwuying, Taiwan to play Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with conductor Jerry Hou and Eva Symphony Orchestra. Wei will also take his first step into Singapore with Ding Yi Chinese Chamber ensemble. Wei will also give master classes at the Talent Music Summer Course and Festival in Brescia, the Casalmaggiore Music Festival in Italy.

As both a soloist and chamber musician, Wei has collaborated with renowned conductors and artists such as Eliahu Inbal, Marin Alsop, Edward Gardner, Wen-pin Chien, and ShaoChia Lü. His orchestral appearances include performances with the Belgian National Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, London Philharmonic, and Niederrheinische Sinfoniker.

WILLIAN WEI, VIOLIN 魏靖仪,小提琴

Wei gained international attention as the joint gold medalist of the 2013 Thomas & Evon Cooper International Competition. He later received the Laureate at the Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition in 2015 and was awarded the Salon de Virtuosi career grant in 2018. He currently performs on the 1722 Stradivari “Joachim-Elman” violin, generously on loan from the Chimei Cultural Foundation in Taiwan.

2015 年伊丽莎白女王国际音乐大赛桂冠得主魏靖 仪,是备受国际瞩目的台湾新生代小提琴家。他的 音乐天赋灵动自然、情感真挚细腻,演奏技巧游刃 有余,展现出耀眼的音乐爆发力。比利时《晚讯报》 评价他 “在音乐中燃烧热情与率性,直到乐曲终 结。”

《西德日报》称赞“魏靖仪已证明自己是一位 大师,以一种魔幻且敏锐的方式诠释音乐。”

2025 年开季,魏靖仪首次与钢琴家汪奕闻巡演美 国,随后获得波士顿权威音乐媒体《波士顿音乐报》 的高度赞誉: “魏靖仪展现出成熟的大师风范,以 光彩流转的音色演奏每一个音域与动态……他用 精湛细腻的手法释放出如洪流般的珍贵音色。”

在台湾,他首次与伦敦爱乐乐团及指挥加德纳合作 演出西贝柳斯和圣桑的小提琴协奏曲,引起广泛关 注;首次与指挥大植英次及国立台湾交响乐团合作 演出柴可夫斯基小提琴协奏曲。

魏靖仪曾以独奏家身份与众多顶尖音乐家合作,如 指挥殷巴尔、艾索普、加德纳、简文彬和吕绍嘉;合 作乐团包括比利时国家管弦乐团、克利夫兰管弦乐 团、伦敦爱乐乐团和德国下莱茵交响乐团等。

The Story of the "Joachim-Elman" Stradivarius Violin

Around 1938, when Chi Mei founder Shi Wenlong was in fifth or sixth grade, he received a hand-cranked gramophone and two boxes of records as a gift from his brother-in-law. One box contained about a dozen records, all of which featured the violin music of Mischa Elman. These were the most popular records in Japan at the time, and they were known as “Elman Tone.” The sound was so moving and beautiful! Shi Wen-long listened to them every day, often wondering, “How can an instrument produce such a sound? How happy I would be to see this violin...” This wish was almost impossible to fulfil at the time. These records accompanied him through a wonderful childhood. In 1991, his dream came true. He said that as soon as he got the violin, he played it and recalled his childhood memories, which deeply moved him. (Purchased in 1991, after waiting 53 years.)

Elman Tone: Mischa Elman was a senior student of the Auer School in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He was a pupil of the violin master Leopold Auer (1845-1930) and also Auer’s most accomplished student. He was active from the 1910s to the 1960s, giving concerts and recording LPs. He was world-renowned for his beautiful and moving violin sound.

This violin was once owned by the Hungarian Romantic violinist Joseph Joachim (1831-1907). After 1907, it was widely used for concert tours by the Russian violinist Mischa Elman for 41 years. Since then, the famous violin has been named after the two masters, “JoachimElman,” deeply conveying the historical legacy that the famous violin bears. In 1948, the violin was transferred to the collector and

connoisseur Samuel Bloomfield, and then in 1981, it was passed on to the contemporary Czech violinist Josef Suk (1929-2011). He used this violin to record the complete Mozart Violin Concertos, for which he received the Grand Prix du Disque award. The violin is significant for its style and rich historical legacy, and it is a highlight of the Chi Mei Museum collection.

This violin was made during Stradivari’s mature period when his craftsmanship was at its peak. He actively made detailed modifications to the violin’s appearance and arching, making the shape more solid and robust. Although there are subtle differences in the arching and details compared to his earlier works, the overall proportions still follow the standards set by Stradivari in 1704. The label is the original author’s label, but the date has faded.

“姚阿幸-艾尔曼” 斯特拉迪瓦里 小提琴的故事

约莫 1938 年时,当时创办人许文龙年纪国小五、六 年级时,有人送大姐夫一台手摇式留声机、两盒唱 片,其中一盒约有十几张,都是艾尔曼的小提琴音 乐。那是当时日本最红的唱片,他们称作艾尔曼音 色,好感人,好美的声音!我天天听,常常想着“天 底下怎么会有发出这样声音的乐器?我要是看到这 把琴该有多幸福…”,这个愿望在当时真是比登天 还难。当时这些唱片陪我度过美好的童年。1991 年 圆梦了;据他说,一拿到琴,一边拉一边想起儿时画 面,内心很感动。(1991年购买,等了53年后买下。)

艾尔曼音色:艾尔曼是俄罗斯圣彼得堡奥尔学派的 大师兄,他是小提琴大师奥尔(1845-1930)的学生, 也是奥尔最得意的学生。他活跃于 1910 年到 1960 年代,除了音乐会外,也录制黑胶唱片。他演奏时琴 声优美动人而闻名于世。世称:艾尔曼音色。

此琴曾为浪漫时期匈牙利小提琴家姚阿幸( 18311907)拥有;1907 年后由俄籍小提琴家艾尔曼广泛 使用此琴巡回演奏长达 41 年。至此,名琴被冠以两 位大师之名讳-“姚阿幸-艾尔曼”,令人深刻感受到 名琴所肩负的历史传承之使命。1948年,此琴转入 收藏及鉴赏家布鲁菲尔之手,之后于 1981 年传给捷 克当代名小提琴家苏克(1929-2011),他曾使用此 琴灌录了莫扎特小提琴协奏曲全集,而获得法国唱 片大奖之殊荣。此琴风格与丰富的历史传承而显得 意义深远,在奇美的馆藏中备受瞩目。

此琴制作时,斯特拉迪瓦里正处于手艺炉火纯青的 成熟盛期,积极地在提琴外貌与弧度作细部修正, 造型上更为坚实强壮。此琴虽然在弧度及细部手法 上,与前期作品有微妙差别,然其整体比例仍不脱 斯特拉迪瓦里于1704年所设定的标准。标签为原作 者的标签,不过日期的字样已经褪色。
