MESSAGE FROM CONCERT CURATOR, MR FRED CHAN HONG WEI

Earth: Unheard —
Seeking Resonance in the Depths of Culture
“Earth: Unheard” is more than just a concert title — it embodies a deeper reflection and heartfelt hope for what this musical journey aspires to be. It is a window that invites us to listen closely to the voices rooted deep within the soil of culture, often buried beneath the noise of modern life.
The land we live on has nurtured a wealth of folk traditions, ancient spiritual beliefs, and imaginative myths and legends. These cultural elements, like scattered notes across the earth, may not always take centre stage, but they form the vibrant and essential hues of human civilisation. The inspiration for this concert lies in the desire to uncover and honour these cultural undercurrents.
Music has the unique power to transcend boundaries and speak directly to the heart. The carefully curated programme in this concert — though diverse in style — shares a common thread: a reverence for traditional roots and a spirit of contemporary creativity. Each piece flows like a melody from deep within the earth, telling stories of people and places, expressing universal emotions shaped by distinct cultural landscapes.
We are honoured to have Professor Hu Yu — renowned banhu virtuoso from the Central Conservatory of Music — as the Artistic Advisor for this concert. With his masterful musicianship and unwavering dedication to the preservation and evolution of Chinese traditional music, Professor Hu brings profound insight and artistic depth to this programme.
“Unheard” does not mean silence — it refers to sounds that ask us to slow down, to listen intently, and to discover their quiet power. Through Earth: Unheard, we hope to offera moment of pause amidst the clamour of daily life, and to guide our audience toward those rare, resonant voices that dwell deep within ourculturalmemory—timeless, moving, and alive.
Fred Chan Hong Wei Curator/Concertmaster

Echoes of the Mountain 《
A sorrowful cry echoes through the mist, summoning vibrant, youthful souls.
Sing, dance, march forward—let life bloom with energy and passion!
Three Folk Sentiments 《
Three Folk Sentiments is a Chinese chamber work in three movements: Rising Sun, Lament, and Comic Interlude. Each movement captures a distinct and familiar emotion in everyday life—joy, longing, and humour.
Rising Sun draws inspiration from Wang Anshih’s poem New Year’s Day, particularly the line “While the rising sun shines over each and every household”, evoking the warmth and cheer of sunlight flooding homes. Lament references a classical Chinese poetic form that expresses grief, separation and mortality. Comic Interlude refers to a traditional form of light-hearted banter often seen in folk performance arts, adding a touch of wit and playfulness to the suite.

Mahākāla, transliterated as “Mahāgala” in Chinese, is regarded in Hinduism as a manifestation of Shiva, depicted with six arms symbolising destruction and battle. In Buddhism, he is seen as an incarnation of Maheshvara, with Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) infusing him with divine consciousness to serve as a Dharma protector who vanquishes evil and bestows blessings. In Tibetan Buddhism, Mahākāla is closely associated with Avalokiteśvara, practising the Four EnlightenedActivities—pacifying, enriching, magnetising, and subjugating — to dispel karma and demons, prolong life, enhance wisdom, grant spiritual freedom, and guide sentientbeings.
This composition is inspired by the poem Mahākāla Deity byXiaoXue,aBaiethnicpoet from China. The composer seeks to portray his personal devotion to Mahākāla through music, reimagining the deity’s image and associated mythology. Drawing from Indian classical music Raga, the piece symbolises the

Indian tradition of Mahākāla worship. Folk elements such as the Bai ethnic song Moonlit Love Song represent the Chinese Mahākāla belief, while motifs from the guqin piece Li Sao thread through the composition — crafting a musical work that is rich in ethnic identity, global influence, ritualistic spirit, theatrical expression, and experimental creativity.
Barong Dance
The Barong Dance is an iconic traditional Balinese performance, dramatising the eternal struggle between good and evil. Barong, a divine forest guardian embodied by two dancers in a lion-like costume, faces its nemesis Rangda, the witch queen of the Leyak, who spreads terror with her black magic. The sheng solo piece Barong Dance incorporates Balinese gamelan elements to evoke their legendary battle.
The piece bursts forth with scintillating tutti passages in the gong kebyar style, woven from the Balinese pelog selisir scale (approximating 1 3 4 5 7 in cipher notation). The sheng’s vibratos mimic the acoustical beating of paired gongs at similar pitches. As Barong enters, the sheng introduces the ‘Barong theme’ in the selisir scale, while the accompaniment emulates gamelan gongs and textures. Next, the accompaniment takes up the theme as the sheng conjures impressions of interlocking metallophones.
As the scale shifts to pelog tembung (cipher notation: 6 7 1 3 4), the tune turns sinister as black magic permeates the village. The tempo accelerates to an allegro, and Rangda erupts with her grotesque ‘Rangda theme’. The ‘Barong’ and ‘Rangda’ themes engage in contrapuntal combat, depicting Barong and the warriors clashing with the demon queen. At combat’s crux, Rangda curses the warriors to stab themselves with their keris daggers, symbolised by the inverted ‘Barong theme’.
In response to this crisis, Barong conjures a protective spell, rendering the warriors invulnerable under the bitonal incantation of the ‘Barong theme’. With Rangda in retreat, her theme descends stepwise into the abyss. The ‘Barong theme’ is reprised in C major,

heralding the heroes’ victory, and the sheng’s selisir-scale fireworks blaze towards a jubilant conclusion.
Originally composed for sheng and piano in 2020, Barong Dance was commissioned and published by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 2025, composer Wang Chenwei adapted it for sheng and chamber ensemble as a commission from Singapore’s Ding Yi Music Company.
音阶转为pelog tembung(简谱 6 7 1 3 4),曲调渐 染邪气,如黑魔法渗透村落。
Polyphonic Returns
Inspired by He Jingzhi’s poetic work Return to Yan’an, this work draws from verses imbued with agrarian symbolism — “clutching the loess soil” and “millet and grains” — to construct a ritualistic soundscape of the Loess Plateau (yellow earth in west China). The musical motifs traverse three epochs of cultural metamorphosis over seven decades: the 1950s’ blue stripes of “sheep-belly towels” morph into a musical staff, as pioneers of the era resonate with the visceral vibrations of “Xintianyou” folk songs, to 1970s’ existential canon, when the embroidered pouch of “Mother’s Heart” tethers the souls of sentdown youths, then to the New Era’s quantum nostalgia and home-sick, with the rhythms of Ansai waist drums transfigured into a primordial genetic code, reimagining the ethos of the “Loess Highlands” through superstring folk harmonies. The rugged and tender banhu sings to starry sky, scattering “handfuls of yellow earth” toward celestial realms.
In the end, the folk melody The East is Red ascends as a gentle sunrise, counterpoint with the “sheep-belly towel” motif, collapsing temporal and spatial dimensions. It’s like the bell chimes of Beijing’s Telegraph Tower conversing with the refrain “How many times have I returned to Yan’an in my dreams?” Here, “endless returns” transcend mere cyclical variation, becoming a spatiotemporal folding of loess DNA—a modernist projection of ancestral memory. The intertwining canon and double counterpoint echo the resonance and reflection of individual voices within the torrent of the times.
