Monique van Nieuwland Works… This year Monique used the TC Loom to create work for a commission (costumes and set in the Alex Proyas movie 'Gods of Egypt'), production (glass cases) and pieces for exhibition (‘Ocean Scape’* for the 2nd Tamworth Textile Triennial: "Group Exchange"). *Ocean Scape - Many of the world’s oceans are suffering deforestation of the sea floor. Drag net fishing, shore developments, flotsam and chemical pollution are threatening majestic ‘ocean forests’. I am attracted to the idea of creating something beautiful using discarded materials, which at the same time communicates a story of environmental concern. Ocean Scape includes plant images, referencing 1860s illustrations of Australian marine flora. I used recycled materials such as fishing net, shopping bags and audio/video tape to make this work. - Monique
