Kids Eat Free....................................................6

When we think of Noah’s Ark, it is natural to think that Noah was safe inside because he built it according to God’s specifications. Maybe the strength of the gopher wood and the soundness of the architecture ensured that the waters of the flood would not come into the Ark. But then, contemplate on Genesis 7:16 “The animals going in were male and female of every living thing as God had commanded Noah, THEN GOD SHUT HIM IN.... Don’t miss this.... even after Noah had built the Ark, it was God Himself who shut him in, in order to shut out the waters of the flood... In other translations this verse says “The Lord sealed them inside.” May the Almighty God seal us inside His Ark of protection through this last 4 months of 2021. It is not the fact that you have locked your house that keeps you safe at night, it is not your good driving skills that keeps you safe on the road, neither is it your healthy eating habits that keeps you healthy - only God can shut you in and shut out Satan who is seeking to devour you. Father God we pray that in this last 4 months of 2021 as we walk into the streets and as we drive on the roads, Oh God shut us in. Father we pray for our children that in the midst of dangers and molesters... You will shut them in, keep out the flood waters of abuse, rape, murder, accidents, diseases and untimely death... Oh God shut us in, shut us in your Ark of protection , into your Ark of compassion.. May GOD SHUT US IN AS WE OBEY HIM AND TRUST IN HIS WORD.

Stand Fast and Hold the Traditions

by Ray Lacelle

“Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle”. (2 Thessalonians 2:15 NKJV) In the fall of 1982, I was a senior high school student. Patrick, one of my best friends and I had what we thought was a great idea for our school, so we took it to our principal. As student council rep’s we frequented Mr Ames’ office. He liked what we had in mind, but said we’d have to sell it to the school body. He stated, “Their vote will determine the outcome”. Our idea was to re-instate the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance each morning before school. You see, we couldn’t remember when we stopped this tradition, but now because we no longer did, it required a school-wide vote to get the Pledge back. Well, we lobbied our idea among our fellow students and then took a vote. We got the Pledge back! While I’m grateful for that outcome, Patrick and I have wondered a few times after graduating if they are still reciting the pledge and if not, how long our efforts made an impact on the students who came after us? What does that story have to do with today? A lot, actually. Can you think of some important values or traditions that you grew up with which have fallen by the wayside? If so, then I want to challenge you today to start doing something about it! 1) Dare to talk about those values in real world situations. If you don’t who will? 2) Take action to preserve those values. Do your best to lead by example. Taking your family to church would be a great step. 3) Swing for the fences! Don’t be afraid to take some risks to achieve great things for the benefit of those who are following in your footsteps.

Ray Lacelle has been the principal and administrator for Embassy Christian Academy in Porter, Texas, since he and his family founded the school in 2015. The Lacelle’s are souls oriented, reaching the un-churched and across denominational lines, serving through the school where they lead, in churches, through the media, and workshops which they have written and facilitate. Ray’s first book is scheduled to be published this fall: “Pray the Promises (not the Problems)”.

EVERYTHING WE DO … Chris Trotter as Superintendent of Schools I am honored to serve as Superintendent of Schools at Cleveland ISD. The opportunity has exceeded every expectation I had thus far, and I’m extremely grateful to call Cleveland “home”. I began my employment with CISD in May 2019, and I couldn’t be more pleased to be a part of this fastgrowth district. At Cleveland ISD, academic achievement is a priority and the primary focus of our educational work. As such, the dedicated staff and administrative team remain focused on meeting the needs of EVERY student. We work diligently to implement effective teaching strategies and current trends in education because we are committed to the success of our students. In my capacity as Superintendent, I am reminded of a science experiment when I was in 5th grade. My teacher captured the imagination of our entire class during a lab lesson on volume, and that day still resonates with me. She brought in a large glass vase and placed it where we all had a clear view of what was about to happen. The vase had a large opening at the top, and she began to place large rocks into the vase until it was filled to the top. Then she asked a simple question, “How many of you think the vase is full?” We all raised our hands because there was simply no way another rock would fit in that vase. She reached into a drawer and pulled out a bag of small pebbles and began to pour those pebbles into the vase. Occasionally, she would shake the vase, and the pebbles would filter down. To our surprise, the entire bag of pebbles fit into the vase that we all thought was full. She asked the same question, and we all raised our hands again because there was no way another pebble would have fit into the vase. She reached back into the drawer and pulled out a bag of sand and began to pour sand into the vase and continued until sand reached the top of the vase. We were mesmerized! But there was no way anything else was going to fit in that vase. It was completely full ... at least we thought it was. She reached back into that drawer one more time and pulled out a pitcher of water and began to pour water into the vase. I guess she had premeasured because she kept pouring until all of the water was in the vase, and THEN the vase was full! That science experiment reminds me of the responsibilities we have in education. There are always additional teaching moments and learning opportunities! While we are responsible for providing curriculum and instruction to our students (rocks), we are also compelled to help mold their character and personality (pebbles). Providing a safe, nurturing atmosphere (sand) is also important to the learning process. These are just a few of the key components required in a successful educational environment. The CISD motto ... “EVERY decision we make and EVERYTHING we do ... is #JUST4KIDS.” Not only is this the administrative motto, it’s what we live by! After all, there’s truly nothing more rewarding that being a part of, and watching a child succeed.

Mr. Chris Trotter currently serves as Superintendent of Schools at Cleveland ISD, a fast-growth school district which serves approximately 10,000 students. He is a fifth-generation educator with roots in Liberty County, where he attended elementary school in Dayton and Hardin public schools. His father, Raymond Trotter, was Superintendent of Schools at Hardin ISD for a number of years before the family moved to Winnsboro. Chris earned his undergraduate degree and math certification at Texas A & M University. Bell High School in Hurst-Euless- Bedford ISD, Denison High School in Denison ISD, Creekview High School in CarrolltonFarmers Branch ISD, Smithson Valley High School in San Antonio ISD, and Chief Administrative Officer at Tomball ISD. This experience has been invaluable in his current position at CISD. Chris is a strong advocate for children and public education. “I am excited to serve in such a strong community that values education. I truly believe we all share a common goal ... to successfully educate students and elevate Cleveland ISD to a premier school district in the State of Texas.”

Splendora ISD Cultivating Exceptional People Dr. Jeff Burke, Splendora ISD Superintendent

We are excited to begin the 2021-22 school year in Splendora ISD! Our administrators, teachers, and staff have worked incredibly hard this summer to get ready to welcome our students and parents back to school. I am so proud of our district and campus leadership, along with our campus design teams, for approaching this year with intentionality and purpose regarding our strategic direction. In Splendora ISD, we know that we can control

two very important things: the relationships we build with each other and with our students, and the quality of learning experiences we design. We understand and embrace the monumental opportunity we have been provided to serve our community, and we don’t take that for granted. We want to have highly engaging classrooms in which every child has the opportunity to learn and grow. We work hard to ensure that our students are adaptable, self-motivated, confident, and productive citizens, and the opportunities we provide help build these valuable life skills. The last two years have really helped us realize what we truly value, and that’s the impact that we can make on children’s lives every day. As we continue to “Cultivate Exceptional People,” we are focused on: 1) Student Success; 2) Staff Engagement, Well-Being and Growth; 3) Community Engagement, Transparency and Trust; and 4) Strategic Financial Stewardship. As a fast growth district, we are excited about welcoming new people into our community and into our schools, and we strive to be a destination district. As always, it is an honor to serve as Superintendent of Splendora ISD. Born in Orange, Texas, Dr. Burke graduated from Hardin Jefferson High School and attended Houston Baptist University and Lamar University, before starting his teaching career in 1995 and received his doctorate in educational leadership from Texas A&M University in 2015. Dr. Burke is focused on creating and facilitating systems that focus on student engagement through positive relationships and the design of meaningful learning experiences. As the child of two public school educators, Dr. Burke holds true to the belief that public schools are the foundation of our democracy, and that it is our responsibility to look beyond state test scores to the talents, hopes, and dreams of every child. He and his wife, Kim, a reading specialist at Peach Creek Elementary, have two children, daughter Tylee and son Beckett.

The Problem: Addictions. The Solution: Jesus Christ.

by Dr. Alan Kitay

An addiction is a compulsive or physical dependence upon a substance, person, or behavior that produces a temporary feeling of pleasure. However, the long-term destructive effects of an addiction normally tend to outweigh the temporary effects. A behavior is considered addictive when one knowingly does something that is harmful or not in one’s best interest. Addictions are progressive conditions that exert more and more control over the individual. Control is usually both psychological and physical. Although the addict may admit that the condition is harmful, quitting may be difficult or impossible. So, ask your self this question, “Am I doing something that temporarily makes me me?” If you answered, “Yes,” you may be addicted to something. Maybe you are struggling with an alcohol or drug addiction. Maybe you have a sexual addiction of some kind. Maybe you have a spending, eating or gambling addiction. Here are some suggested steps to help you understand the causes of addiction and begin the road to recovery. First, the cause: Addictions are the result of one trying to find immediate release from emotional or physical pain. People who become addicts generally have problems which produce emotional or physical pain, hey want and need comfort. They then turn to a substance, which is a false comforter to make them feel better or to deal with the pain. There are three false beliefs (mindsets), which contradict the scriptures, that contribute heavily to addiction. They are: I cannot tolerate suffering (Discomfort anxiety). I must feel better immediately (Low frustration Tolerance). I choose immediate pleasure over long-range consequences (Short Range Hedonism). It is an attempt to deal with pain, apart from God, that leads to addictions. Second, the cure: Jesus Christ has come to set the captives free. All people have some problems, distress, or stress in their lives. The difference is how they choose to handle these problems. For those of you who are having difficulties handling problems, I have Good News for you. Jesus Christ has come to set the captives free. Jesus said, Luke 4:18-19 (KJV) The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, [19] To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Gal 5:1 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:34-37 NIV When a person trusts Christ as their Lord and Savior, he or she can be set free because Jesus is God and has promised in John 8:36 “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” and in John 10:10 “I have come to give you life and give it more abundantly.” Jesus sets people free and answers the pain in their lives....where am I going when I die and what am I living for on this earth? He also gives power to overcome the temptations and the addiction when a person surrenders his or her life to Him. For those who are struggling with addictions, I recommend the following steps: Outline of solutions: First, acknowledge that you have an addiction. (Matthew 9:12). Second, desire to be free from the addiction (Mark 10:51). Third, be willing to turn from the addiction. (Luke 9:23-25). Fourth, understand that God is the real goal. (Matthew 6:33). Fifth, be willing to lay your addiction before God. (I Peter 5:7). Sixth, depend upon God to fulfill your needs. (Philippians 4:19) The pain is real; the longing is real; but you have a choice about how you are going to deal with the pain and longing. Turning to a thing does not fix the problem. It only makes the pain go away for a short time. But, when the pain returns, the problem is still there. An addiction is a way to hide the pain, not fix the problem. Remember, dealing with symptoms is not the same as dealing with the problem, or the root cause, of your pain. Also remember, there is no chemical solution to a spiritual problem. Before the urge to turn to your addictive behavior rises again, make plans for a better response. Plan 3-4 things you are going to do before you cave-in to the urge to go to your addictive behavior. The can include making plans to meet or call someone, find a place of worship to go to, engage in an activity that you enjoy that is not harmful, or best yet, start to pray. Call out to God, who is the true comforter. Jesus has promised, (John 14:18), “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. “ Dr. Alan Kitay, has a Ph.D. in Psychology and is a Licensed Professional Christian Therapist. He is the Director of Grace Christian Counseling Ministries and can be reached by calling 832-419-0673 or e-mailing AlanKitay@graceccm.com.

The Fall Season of Life Deborah Elum, Author & Speaker

Fall announces its arrival as tree leaves begin a beautiful transformation from green to vibrant shades of red, yellow, orange, and brown. As a tree begins preparing for the winter season in the fall, the outward signs start to appear. We, too, should prepare as the seasons in our life change like my friend, Ellen, experienced after she retired. Ellen and her husband prepared for the fall season of their life together. They decided to downsize from a house to an apartment. It was not an easy decision, but they knew it was God’s plan for their lives. Even though they had less room in the apartment, moving turned out to be a wonderful change for both of them. The benefits of having all their meals prepared for them and the weekly housekeeping service made their lives easier to manage. Unfortunately, Ellen’s husband did not live past that season. The leaves of change begin to fall gently to the ground as it marked the dawn of a new season just over the horizon for her. Recently, Ellen’s son and his wife decided to build a new home in the country. They asked Ellen to move to the country with them, and they would build her a beautiful cottage right next to their house. After she prayed, she knew that it was God’s plan for her life. She was excited and ready for the next season in her life. In any season, just like the tree, we must prepare for change. But, as we trust God, He will lead, guide, and direct us according to His purpose, will, and timing for our lives. “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”

Ephesians 6:12 (NASB) “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Philippians 4:8-9 (MLB) “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,

whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is kindly spoken, whatever is lofty and whatever is praiseworthy—put your mind on these. And what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me that put into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

1st Psalm Blessed is the man that listens not to the counsel of the ungodly, nor

I hear the sound of a distant roaring lion. The King of Kings, the Lion of Judah is soon approaching. The faint sound is getting louder. Prepare yourselves for the coming days - put away your sackcloth and ashes. The days of great power are here. Rise up - wake up! Don’t miss My return. You want to be prepared and in place when I come. Check yourself, check your motives and actions. Will you be found ready and alert?

Revelation 5:5 (TLB) “But one of the twenty-four

Growing in Hard Places For three years now, I have been watching a tree grow out of a rock outside by our pool. Everyone who sees it comments on how amazing it looks. Growing through a rock was certainly not the best environment for any plant to flourish in, but it keeps growing. It started from one seed planted in a hard place. This sycamore tree that has grown through a rock is what growing in difficult times looks like. You might not see it during the process, but it looks so beautiful and catches the attention of others passing by when they see what you had to go through to become what you were created to be. In order for any seed to develop there must be a growth process. It will take time. In life, it may not seem like you’re making much progress but keep striving, you’re getting stronger every day. When we take small steps of growth every day, over time, we see progress and you begin to change as a person. And when you change yourself, you can change your circumstances. When looking back at my own times of struggle and where I am now, I can appreciate those first signs of growth. Just as this tree was once just a seedling, struggling to push through the crack in the rock, one day you will look back and see just how much you have grown and how much stronger you are because of the struggle. Whatever obstacle you are facing, keep pushing through. Even if you find yourself planted under some rock at the moment, look for the crack in it to grow and bloom where you are planted.
