LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

I

hope that all of you and your families had a great holiday season, and Happy New Year to you all! And what a special holiday treat it was when we got that unexpected snowfall in early December. We included several photos from that night and day in this issue of the newsletter. As you probably know, the TPOA annual meeting was held on December 5, and it included the election to fill four open seats on the TPOA Board of Directors. Thanks to all of you who took the time to vote, and thanks to all of the candidates for your interest in serving our community. Paula Dimmitt was elected and Karen O’Neil, Craig Zenner and Ricky Gonzales were reelected. I know I speak for the rest of the Board members when I say how excited we are to work with Paula. For those of you who don’t know her, Paula is a volunteer extraordinaire! For years she has given so many hours of her time to help coordinate so many different community events, often with her husband Michael, and usually with her great friend and “partner in crime” Nancy Handel, who is also an amazing volunteer for the community. Beyond volunteer time, Paula and Michael have always taken a deep interest in the many different issues that affect our neighborhood, and I don’t recall any public board meeting in the last five years that she and Michael haven’t attended and sat in the front row! We look forward to Paula’s energy, perspective and new ideas. Speaking of great volunteers, special thanks to Terri Edwards, who continues to lead our Landscaping Committee. In addition to leading efforts to plant shade trees throughout the park, landscape around the new park bathroom facilities, and various other park landscaping improvement projects, they restored the Gerfers Cemetery and worked to promote Timberwood Park’s rich history, which included efforts to get official state signage designating the cemetery a state historical landmark. Terri and the group have also developed a Memorial Tree Program in which Timberwood residents can remember a loved one by planting a tree in the park in their honor. More information on this program is included later in this newsletter. It’s hard to believe that the school year is already half over, and when the next school year starts, middle schoolers from our neighborhood will begin attending the new, yet-to-benamed middle school off of Borgfeld. What a great cut in the commute distance and time it will be for the students and parents given that Spring Branch Middle School is 10 or more miles depending where you live in Timberwood, and the new school is only about two miles away. Plus, it won’t involve 281

traffic. The new high school that was approved by voters as part of Comal ISD’s 2017 bond package, will also be located off of Borgfeld, and will basically be adjacent to the middle school. That school, which is also yet to be named, is scheduled to open in August 2021. Special thanks to Timberwood resident Marty Bartlett, who serves on the Comal ISD Board of Trustees (and is a past President of the TPOA Board), for stopping by the annual meeting to provide an update on the school projects. Thanks Marty for your leadership on the School Board to protect our neighborhood children’s’ interests, and thanks to you and your fellow Board members for getting the new schools built without a tax increase! Last but not least, I know you and many others throughout the community are wondering about the clubhouse project status. It has been slower than we had hoped, but given the size, scope and potential cost of this project, it’s not something that we want to rush – if we are going to do it, we want to do everything we can to make sure it is done right. At the time of this writing, we are nearing completion of the design phase, engineering drawings are nearly complete, the park platting process is underway, and we have begun interviewing general contractors. Once all of the design work is done and we have firm construction bids, all of that will be presented the community, and the community will have the opportunity to vote whether or not to proceed with the project. Many more details will be forthcoming on this in the coming weeks and months. Thanks for your time, and I’ll see you around the neighborhood! Greg Matula TPOA Board President
