LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT I’d like to begin by thanking everybody who generously supported the supply drive benefiting victims of Hurricane Harvey. It comes as no surprise that the response was tremendous as a 16’ x 8’ trailer was overflowing with donated bottled water, cleaning supplies, tools and equipment (including several chain saws), clothing, hygiene items and much more. On August 2, TPOA Board member Ricky Gonzales and Timberwood resident Zach Schuler delivered the items to First Presbyterian Church in Rockport which was distributing items to those in need, and Ricky and Zach even helped out by taking items door to door. Needless to say, all of the items were very much needed and appreciated by the residents who were working to recover from the storm. Thanks to Ricky, Zach and Karen O’Neil for coordinating the drive, and to volunteers like John & Carry Turcotte, Michael & Paula Dimmitt, Bradie Parrot-Vera, Aaron Woodrow, Tina Crossman and Chris Martinez who spent several hours organizing and loading the trailer and pickup trucks. Thanks also to Aaron for lending his trailer to the effort. As we previously announced, the Caretaker position at the park is open and we were very pleased that there were several very good applicants for the position. Obviously this is an important position because the caretaker is essentially the “face” of the park and plays a range of key roles in helping to keep the park clean and secure, ensuring park rules are followed, managing the pool during pool season, providing assistance with special events, and much more. At the time of this writing we are reviewing the applicants’ information and will soon begin the interview process, so we should be announcing the new caretaker(s) in the near future. Speaking of park staff, we always like to remind everybody about the great work that is done by our Park Maintenance Manager Robert Jung. Robert has spent well over 30 years in his job and takes tremendous pride in it. Besides basically being a master craftsman in every facet of maintenance work, Robert always goes above and beyond in his efforts, and never hesitates to come in at night or on weekends if there is a problem or issue. We were also fortunate to find a great assistant for Robert in Benny Martinez earlier this year. Robert and Benny are a great team, and if you see them working in or around the park, be sure to stop and say hello and thank them for their great work. For those of you who may not be aware, the TPOA Board has
developed a Facebook page that will provide information and updates on community issues and events. The page is called “Timberwood Park Owners Association,” so if you are on Facebook, we encourage you to visit it and become a member. Beyond providing another means of communication, the Facebook page will allow for more timely dissemination of information than e-blasts and this newsletter. The new, state-of-the-art security camera system at the park is installed and now fully operational, and gives a much broader and clearer view of different areas of the park. Thanks to Board member Chris Martinez for spearheading this effort. Lastly, for the last few years this president’s letter has typically included updates on various capital improvement projects that have taken place, and there have been a lot of them. Most of you have probably noticed there has been a slow-down on projects this year, and that’s the result of the clubhouse planning effort. Obviously the clubhouse will be a major capital expense if the community decides to move forward with it after the plan and cost is presented and voted on, so other potential projects are on hold pending whether or not we start the clubhouse. The back gate (Trixie Drive) will only be available for walk-in purposes. • Once the parking lot is full, no more vehicles will be admitted until the event is over. HALLOWEEN IN THE PARK Saturday, October 28, from 6PM to 10PM As our neighborhood continues to grow, we have more residents that participate in our events. The largest and most attended event is our Halloween Celebration in the Park. We will be implementing some new procedures this year in an effort to reduce the number of people who aren’t Timberwood Park residents or their invited guests, and to keep our residents and their guests as safe as possible during the event. Security: • Off-duty police officers will be on duty at entrances and roaming at the event to ensure safety. In-Park Parking: • Only drivers who can present their current park gate card to officers will be admitted into the park. If the vehicle does not have a gate card, they will be directed to park along the neighboring streets and walk into the park. Please park legally and respect your neighbors. Do not park in front of driveways

• Residents may bring family members and outside guests in with them provided they show their gate card at the entrance. Only one card needed per group. Do not allow strangers in your escort group. • Guests of residents or family members who are coming to the park separately without a gate card will require a wrist band, one per family or group. Guest wrist bands may be picked up at the park office during normal business hours from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, and from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. on Saturdays. The wrist bands will be available starting October 1. The cost for the guest band will be 1 large bag of candy as donation to the event. Each guest band allows the wearer to bring guest family members and friends into the park for the event. • Residents not picking up wrist bands are encouraged to donate 1 large bag of candy per family prior to the event. In a fire, seconds count. Seconds can mean the difference between residents of our community escaping safely from a fire or having their lives end in tragedy. That’s why this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme: “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!â€? is so important. It reinforces why everyone needs to have an escape plan. Here’s this year’s key campaign messages: • Draw a map of your home by using a grid with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit. • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out. • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them. • Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find. • Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. • Once you get outside, stay outside. FACTS A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire. Install smoke alarms inside every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound. According to an NFPA survey, only one of every three American households have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. While 71% of Americans have an escape plan in case of a fire, only 47% of those have practiced it. One-third of American households who made an estimate thought they would have at least 6 minutes before a fire in their home would become life-threatening. The time available is often less. And only 8% said their first thought on hearing a smoke alarm would be to get out!

Halloween can be the spookiest night of the year, but keeping your pets safe doesn’t have to be tricky. The ASPCA recommends taking these simple, common sense precautions to keep your pet happy and healthy all the way to November 1. Stash the Treats The candy bowl is for trick-or-treaters, not Scruffy or Fluffy. Several popular Halloween treats are toxic to pets. Chocolate in all forms—especially dark or baking chocolate—can be very dangerous for cats and dogs, and sugar-free candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can cause serious problems in pets. If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately. Watch the Decorations and Keep Wires Out of Reach While a carved jack-o-lantern certainly is festive, pets can easily knock over a lit pumpkin and start a fire. Curious kittens are especially at risk of getting burned or singed by candle flame. Popular Halloween plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered relatively nontoxic, but can produce stomach discomfort in pets who nibble on them. Be Careful with Costumes For some pets, wearing a costume may cause undue stress. The ASPCA recommends that you don’t put your dog or cat in a costume unless you know he or she loves it. If you do dress up your pet for Halloween, make sure the costume does not limit his or her movement, sight or ability to breathe, bark or meow. Check the costume carefully for small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that could present a choking hazard. Ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury. Be sure to have your pet try on the costume before the big night. If he or she seems distressed or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting your pet wear his or her “birthday suit� or don a festive bandana instead. Keep Pets Calm and Easily Identifiable Halloween brings a flurry of activity with visitors arriving at the door, and too many strangers can often be scary and stressful for pets. All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours. While opening the door for guests, be sure that your dog or cat doesn’t dart outside. And always make sure your pet it wearing proper identification—if for any reason he or she does escape, a collar with ID tags and/or a microchip can be a lifesaver for a lost pet.

Autumn is upon us and so is the fall planting season. Check out our top 10 list of native plants to sow this season. • Monterrey oak (Quercus polymorpha), aka Mexican white oak, is a semi-evergreen oak that grows in the mountains near Monterrey and Saltillo and in Val Verde county. It’s considered to be one of the fastest growing oaks in our area and as a white oak is oak wilt resistant. • Montezuma cypress (Cupressus mucronatum) is native to Mexico and along the Rio Grande valley. It’s more drought tolerant than the bald cypress, but faster growing. One of the largest trees in the world, the Árbol del Tule, is a Montezuma cypress. • Mexican sycamore (Platanus mexicana) is known for its fast growth and white fuzz beneath the leaves, which prevents sucking insects from causing havoc in the summertime. Early fall is the best time to search the nurseries for this tree. • Wild olive (Cordia boissieri), aka Mexican olive, ranges from Nueces County to Northern Mexico. Not a real olive, it does produce a similar fruit that is palatable by

• Esperanza (Tecoma stans) is native to West Texas and Northern Mexico, but is well known as a fast growing, bright yellow-flowered shrub. The preferred variety is ‘Gold Star’ esperanza, which may be grown in pots or in the ground. Always cut back to 3 inches by the first week of March or you’ll have large dead stems for the rest of the year. • Cenizo (Leucophyllum frutescens) is the ubiquitous shrub of South Texas and Northern Mexico. Its purple flowers signal (or are the result of) rain. The debate is continuous and vigorous. There are four species and varieties to choose from and all are fantastic: common, ‘Green Cloud’, fragrant and ‘Lynn Lowery Legacy’. • Four nerve daisy (Tetraneuris scaposa), aka hymenoxys, is a durable yellow flower perennial. It prefers rocky well drained soil, but will tolerant other sites. Also, it attracts butterflies and is deer resistant. • Gregg’s mistflower (Conoclinium greggii) is a butterfly magnet. Any butterfly garden worth its weight in gold nectar must have one of the four available options: Gregg’s, blue, white and fragrant. • Gregg’s salvia (Salvia greggii), aka autumn sage, is the most common Salvia species sold. It’s appreciated by humans, butterflies and hummingbirds alike. Gregg’s salvia comes in white, pink, red, cherry, raspberry, purple and two-toned flowers. Gregg’s salvia prefers full sun, but will tolerate a little shade. • Damianita (Chrysactinia mexicana) is perhaps the toughest plant to grow. It will literally grow in the cracks of asphalt parking lots. The only way humans can kill it is by providing it tender loving care. Damianita is evergreen, deer resistant and its yellow flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

Iced Pumpkin Cookies Ingredients: • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup butter, softened • 1 1/2 cups white sugar • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar • 3 tablespoons milk • 1 tablespoon melted butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cloves, and salt; set aside. 2. In a medium bowl, cream together the 1/2 cup of butter and white sugar. Add pumpkin, egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla to butter mixture, and beat until creamy. Mix in dry ingredients. Drop on cookie sheet by tablespoonfuls; flatten slightly. 3. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes in the preheated oven. Cool cookies, then drizzle glaze with fork. 4. To Make Glaze: Combine confectioners’ sugar, milk, 1 tablespoon melted butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Add milk as needed, to achieve drizzling consistency. Yield: 36 servings. How to Stay Safe While Walking Walking is a healthy activity, but you should know the rules of pedestrian safety first. This is especially true if you are walking in an area where there aren't sidewalks or paths separate from the road. To stay safe while walking, follow these rules of the road: • Walk Facing Traffic When Walking on the Side of the Road If there is no sidewalk and you must walk on the side of the road, choose the side where you are facing oncoming traffic. • Cross Safely Look both ways before crossing any street. At controlled intersections, it is wise to cross only when you have the pedestrian crossing light. But even then, drivers and bikers may have a green light to turn and won't be expecting you to be in the crosswalk. Make eye contact with any drivers who may be turning. Give them a wave. Make sure they see you. It can be tempting to simply jaywalk, but know the do's and don'ts as it can be an infraction and a safety hazard. • Walk Single File When Not Separated from the Road Unless you are on a sidewalk separated from the road or in a wide bike/pedestrian lane, you should walk in single file. This is especially important on a road with lots of curves and where traffic has only a split second chance of seeing you. • Be Aware of Bikers and Runners Share the road and path with bikers and runners. Bike riders should alert you when approaching from behind with a bike bell or a “passing on the left/right.â€? Listen for them, and move to walk single file, allowing them to pass safely. Runners should also call out for passing. Bike-walker collisions can result in broken bones or head injury for either — and you aren’t wearing a helmet. (Continued on page 19)

• Be Visible Wear brightly colored clothing when walking in the daytime. When walking at night, wear light-colored or reflective clothing to be visible. Drivers are often not expecting walkers to be out after dark, and you need to give them every chance to see you, even at street crossings that have crossing signals. Be just as cautious at dawn or twilight, as drivers still have limited visibility or may even have the setting or rising sun directly in their eyes. • Keep the Volume Down Don’t drown out your environment when listening to your earbuds or headphones. Keep the volume at a level where you can still hear bike bells and warnings from other walkers and runners coming up behind you. • Hang Up and Eyes Up Chatting, texting, or playing games like Pokemon Go on a mobile device while you walk is as dangerous as doing those things while driving. You are distracted and not as aware of your environment. You are less likely to recognize traffic danger, passing joggers and bikers or tripping hazards. Potential criminals see you as a distracted easy target. Adopt habits that can keep your phone in your pocket, or at least stop in a safe place to complete your phone tasks before moving on. • Know When to Stop Walking Heat sickness, dehydration, heart attack or stroke can strike walkers of any age. Learn the symptoms of medical emergencies and carry a cell phone to dial 911. • Be Aware of Stranger Danger Choose your walking route for paths frequented by other walkers, joggers, and bikers. If you see someone suspicious, be prepared to alter your course or go into a store or public building to avoid them. Acting alert and aware can convince bad guys to choose an easier target.
