A Letter to Our Readers

Q: Whaddaya call Mercury retrograde, Yahoo changing its whole email format into an unrecognizable, chaotic mess, a crusty old flip phone breathing its last and being replaced by a training wheels smart phone with learning disabilities, and two days without power and three days without internet service after a Halloween flood on Onion Creek that didn’t make it to your back door only because you’re on high ground? A: November. Q: Whaddaya call a weekend of some of the best presentations ever, by fitness experts, musicians, authors, speakers, coaches, even a movie star – with a side trip to Esther’s Follies thrown in for good measure – and you get to be the MC? A: November – and Santa came early. Why not? If you’re good (or at least pay attention), Santa – or the next dichotomy – might be just around the corner. Santa, btw, has lost some weight, got a new wardrobe, and hipped up. He’ll be at the Austin Holistic Chamber of Commerce Christmas party Dec. 7, 4-10pm, at the Nature’s Treasures Community Center. Bring your list, and get your picture made. –Michael Abedin

Morrnah Is Crazy!

An exclusive excerpt from the newly-released At Zero

by Dr. Joe Vitale

Len thought so, too, at first. He walked out of her seminar three times. Even after he returned and sat through all the esoteric chatter Photo by JoAnn Kailikea from about demons, elves, and spirits, he still thought she was crazy for two years. But something kept him with her. And he stayed loyal, a disciple of her updated brand of Ho’oponopono, until her death in 1992. In 1976, Morrnah adapted the traditional Ho’oponopo practice of healing in a group to healing within yourself. Morrnah was considered a Kahuna, or keeper of the secrets. She didn’t keep them secret, though. She held classes and revealed them to anyone with a few dollars. She often got invited by nurses to clean hospitals. But she didn’t go with a bucket and broom. She went to dispel spirits who walked the halls, rode the elevator all night, or flushed toilets at will. Morrnah went to heal the hospital so the nurses could have peace. Apparently she was good. Nurses in other hospitals asked for the same service. While Morrnah was skilled in traditional Ho’oponopono, the group healing method, her focus was the more internal approach she apparently created herself. While she still honored Hawaiian customs and beliefs, she knew that if people took care of their own inner world, their outer world would change. She created a modern self-help technique out of a Hawaiian tradition.

Black magic.

Morrnah’s focus was on healing. I’m sure she wanted thought forms to be of positive intent. She openly admitted there were sorcerers who practiced black magic. She confessed that they had used it on her, and tried to hurt her. She knew there was power of good, and of not so good. In fact, the early Kahunas of Hawaii were often evil sorcerers who were said to “pray people to death.” According to Julius Scammon Rodman, in his book The Kahuna Sorcerers of Hawaii, there was more black magic being practiced than white magic. There was more hate than love. It was more voodoo than white light. The love and forgiveness of modern day Ho’oponopono wasn’t seen. It was dark art for manipulation. Scott Cunningham, in his book, Cunningham’s Guide to

Hawaiian Magic & Spirituality, wrote that some Kahunas “sent spirits flying on destructive missions.” Some of this can be understood. Christians didn’t arrive until 1820, at which point they started to convert and civilize Hawaiians, outlawing customs like the famous hula dance. Before that, fear, superstition, paranoia, and more dominated the people. They were terrified of the land, the dark, and others. The “gods” of wind, land, and sea might not hurt them if they behaved correctly, offered sacrifices, or hired a magician or sorcerer. Anyone who could help protect them was considered a person with magical powers. Those powers were often used to “curse” or even “kill” any perceived threat. That was early Huna – a psychic weapon. Morrnah was considered one of the last remaining authentic, old-school Kahunas, but she used her power for good. The difference was that, throughout Morrnah’s teachings, she focused on healing yourself. She also believed you never did any cleaning per se. Your cleaning is a request. It’s up to Divinity to do anything. In short, clean and let go. Clear and trust. Practice Ho’oponopono and have faith. Trust the process. Anything else is an ego demand, and the ego isn’t in charge. The Divine is. Too many people in healing circles blame people for not being healed. They say you have to do this or that, and it’s your fault if nothing happens. Unfortunately, those healers are doing more harm than good. According to modern authentic Ho’oponopono, no one is to blame. Ever. You have issues and challenges due to data, and you work to delete the data. But whether the data gets deleted or not isn’t up to you. No wonder Morrnah was considered by some to be “odd.” She couldn’t guarantee results. She could guarantee that she would clean, but the results weren’t up to her. Think about it. And clean. At Zero, Joe Vitale’s long-awaited sequel to Zero Limits, is now available at bookstores, Amazon, or, Joe Vitale is a star of the hit movie The Secret and author of The Attractor Factor and dozens of other best-selling books, including At Zero, the new sequel to Zero Limits.

hen Joe Vitale asks you to be Master of Ceremonies for a two and a half day Spirituality of Abundance event in downtown Austin in November, your first thought might be – cool! Ceremonies. Robes, candles, chanting, and you get to be Master of them. Turns out he meant MC – introduce presenters, tell some stories and jokes, kinda like the Academy Awards. “We want you to be our Billy Crystal,” he explained, and other than the fact that you’re not Jewish, have more hair, and don’t do a very good Fernando Lamas (“You look… mahvelous!”), it seemed like a pretty good fit. Also turned out to be whole lot more fun than ceremonies. (The chanting gets old after the first couple of hours.) Go to enough events of the Metaphysical, Alternative, Spiritual, or Holistic (MASH?) persuasion in the guise of publishing a fine natural magazine, and you could be forgiven for becoming somewhat less easily impressed. Not so at this event, which had something for everyone. Authors, coaches, fitness experts, Austin musicians, a guitar monk, a recovered divorcee, a movie star, and a partridge in a pear … no, wait – that’s this month’s cover. If you couldn’t find something in this lineup to inspire you and give you new insight into the spirituality of abundance and the abundance of spirituality, you might as well just shave your head, grab a tambourine, and see if the Hare Krishnas still need help handing out flowers at LAX. Joe Vitale opened and closed the show, and shared keynote duties with fitness expert Bill Phillips and Dee Wallace, star of ET, Cujo, and a slew of other Hollywood productions. Dee knocked ‘em dead, which makes sense – who better than someone who’s rubbed elbows with Spielberg and played a Stephen King character to tell you a thing or two about creating your own reality? Vitale also had a gift for everyone, a selection of his books, CD’s, and DVD’s, including At Zero, his just-released sequel to Zero Limits.

Not there, square?

Don’t worry. You can still join in the fun and pick up the energy. Go to and check out the reviews, then check out the LiveStream options. (Dee Wallace’s balloons alone make it worth your while.) Watch the magazine, too, for interviews and articles from other presenters – and attendees. Edna Fournier came to be inspired – and left so inspired, she’s debuting in this issue. As author Mindy Austin said in her presentation after showing up with laryngitis and discovering she was in the middle of a covey of natural healers – what if it works?

What if, indeed?

What if you were an Austin artist selected to exhibit work at the airport over the holidays? What would your theme be? Hmm – airport, Austin, holidays… how about an order of wings, with a rock ‘n roll twist? Expecting to Fly is Austin All Natural cover designer Leslie Kell’s collection of original artwork featured at the AIBA exhibit, near baggage claim – check it out, even if you didn’t check in your bags. It’s based on the freedom of flight, with titles taken from songs by artists like Hendrix and Neil Young. The freedom of flight is something that can get a little tricky this time of year. Grace, synonymous with love in the New Testament, is a lot easier when you have wings. Grow yourself some during the holidays instead of making yourself crazy – which segues nicely into Leslie’s original December cover piece True Love, first of her 12 Days of Christmas series, available for gifts as archival prints and greeting cards at

Guess who’s coming to town?

Hint – he flies in every December, but not to the airport. Yep, Santa’s at the Austin Holistic Chamber of Commerce Christmas party December 7, Nature’s Treasures, and he might just be a little hipper – a little more fly – than usual. Be there. (Dec. 7 is Pearl Harbor Day, but let’s leave that flight metaphor on the ground.) Another hint – he doesn’t do a very good Fernando Lamas.

The Christmas season is upon us, bringing with it a time of reflection. In reflecting about the past year, where does your garden fit in? Did you make enough time for it, and for yourself? (Did you make that garden you’ve been promising yourself? Good resolution for 2014.) The holidays are filled with indulgence, especially in regards to food. We eat and drink, oblivious to the source of the merriment. So how do you get back on track? Gifts that celebrate the season and are nurturing are a great idea. Potted ornamentals and herbs are cyclical gifts that keep on giving, long after the last bit of tinsel has been packed away. Herbs for an herb garden are always welcome, especially if they have a history: • The ubiquitous rosemary, found so much this season, has a wonderful history.
During the Middle Ages, rosemary was used for all sorts of purposes – as a divination herb, to see the face of a future mate, and in weddings, traditionally worn by the bride as a wreath to symbolize love and loyalty. Putting a sprig of it under your pillow was guaranteed to ward off nightmares. Rosemary was also planted outside of homes to keep witches away – which, in a roundabout way, later came to symbolize that the wife was in charge of the house, if rosemary grew abundantly. Husbands could claim back their home by cutting a sprig of it and wearing it in buttonholes. • Lavender symbolized housewifely virtue. • Sage, wisdom. • Thyme was painted onto the shields of knights, as it represented courage. • Chamomile provided energy in adversity – and we could all use some of that during the holidays.

Keep the holidays green – literally.

Organic gardening can sound overwhelming and expensive, but gifts of potted, edible herbs are an easy, inexpensive way to start – and gardening can become the most stabilizing factor in your family’s nutritional well being, not to mention the history lessons it can provide. Let’s try for garden-fresh, toxic-free foods and whole health this year. We wish for you a wonderful 2014! George Altgelt is the owner of Geo Growers, specializing in organic custom soil blends, fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. Give your loved ones a starter organic herb garden for Christmas (and maybe a bag o’ dirt). (512) 892-2722,

metaphysical fix? Head for the Hills Bookstores – you know you love them. There’s a vibe, standing in the middle of a collection of knowledge, history, entertainment – and when it’s a metaphysical bookstore, the vibe’s even cooler. Rumor has it Austin’s last metaphysical bookstore disappeared into the big ol’ hole on Condo Canyon (formerly known as “South Lamar”) that devoured a plethora of funky thrift stores, and sent Heart of Texas Music and others scurrying north.

That rumor’s false.

H.O.T Music has indeed hightailed it and South Lamar is, indeed, Condo Canyon, but there’s still one remaining bookstore in Austin dedicated to metaphysical and New Thought books and products, and it’s in a place that probably won’t be going condo anytime soon – Unity Church of the Hills. If you’re an aficionado of metaphysical or holistic speakers, expos, seminars, and concerts, you probably know your way to the big arch at the entrance to Unity of the Hills. They’ve hosted some of the best. Their bookstore has expanded its hours, and carries gift items that speak to you whether you practice traditional Christianity, Buddhism, or just consider yourself spiritual. It also has candles, incense and oils, angel and deity statues, wind chimes, pendulums, card decks, singing bowls, gift certificates, a large selection of greeting cards, an array of CD’s for meditation, healing, and relaxation – and, of course, books. Real books – paper books, books you can hold and feel and smell and put on the nightstand or your altar or see on the shelf while you’re working, waiting like an old friend. Books you can highlight, fold over a corner to keep your place. Books you’ve read over and over, and just open up to see what they have to say to inspire you that day. Deepak Chopra? Yep. Disappearance of the Universe, Joe Dispenza, Course in Miracles? You got it. Louise Hay? You bet. Unity Books, Science of Mind, books by Hafiz and Rumi? Of course. If we could walk with the animals…

TALK WITH THE ANIMALS by Beth Baras What if it were possible to know exactly what an animal needs, instead of guessing? What if sharing an event from a rescue animal’s past could shift their behavior? What if someone could hear what an animal was saying, and that transformed the relationship with their person (or “owner”)? This is what animal communicators do – listen, share, transform, create a better life for animals and people. Animal communicators, sometimes called pet psychics or animal whisperers, have conversations with domestic animals and with wild, captive, and performing animals. Here’s how: • Communication may be done in-person or remotely, anywhere in the world. • The person and communicator talk on the phone. The animal and communicator have an internal dialogue. • The communicator experiences the animal through pictures, words, or body sensations, much like having a conversation with another person – except internally.

Can we talk?

A dog adopted after being rescued from an abusive home was waiting in the car while her new person went into a store – and barking incessantly, pawing at the windows. The shared conversation? My person left me alone in the car – I can’t see where she went. Is she coming back to get me? What if she leaves me here forever? The people I used to live with would be gone for days, and I’d be left alone. I never knew if they were coming back. Is this going to happen with my new family, too? I need to get out and find her! Another adopted dog was chewing her person’s shoes, and communicated that her previous owners fought and yelled at each other, making her very nervous. After she told her story to the communicator, they were able to agree on steps to take to help the dog, who requested that when her family leaves the house, they tell her where they’re going and when they’ll return (and also requested a specific toy to chew on). Bringing a rescue animal into your life is a wonderful act of compassion and courage. In many cases, they’ve have had past experiences that were disturbing. The new family, who has great intentions to create a supportive environment, is often confused by their animal’s behavior – a perfect opportunity for an animal communicator to bring clarity. Beth Baras is a professional animal communicator. (603) 448-1170 •

Clear, with a Chance of Raindrops by Edna Fournier If you’re familiar at all with natural or alternative healing techniques, you’ve probably heard of essential oils. These concentrated essences of natural plant oils have been known to boost stamina and energy, help induce relaxation, assist in managing stress, and promote health, vitality, and longevity. Aromatherapy is the most well-known way to use them, but not the only one. Raindrop Technique uses an application of essential oils combined with several holistic modalities to bring balance and harmony to the body – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

What can you expect from a raindrop session?

• First, your height is measured. • Raindrop Technique is done on a massage table, where essential oils are first applied on the soles of the feet using vita flex techniques. • Therapeutic grade oils are then dispensed in “little raindropsâ€? from a height of about six inches above the back, which is where Raindrop Technique gets its name. Falling through the energy field in this way enhances their vibration. • They are gently applied using gentle feather-like movements, strokes, and techniques to facilitate absorption into the spine and nerve endings, and throughout the bodily tissues and organs. • Once all the oils are applied, a warm compress is applied to the back, increasing their maximum absorption and benefits. • After the Raindrop session, you’re measured again – and many times, you measure taller than before the session. Although the oil application process takes about fifty minutes for a basic session, allow ninety minutes for the whole session. The oils can continue to work in the body for up to one week, often with continuing health benefits and realignment taking place during that time. The technique is deeply relaxing, and it’s recommended you take some time out after the raindrop technique session just to relax your body and slowly ease it back into the real world. Most clients find themselves feeling lighter, energized, thinking more clearly, and generally feeling healthier and more alive. Even long-term pain and discomfort is often significantly reduced or eliminated. Raindrop technique may also, in some cases, have the potential to reduce inflammation, stimulate the immune system, and help the body get rid of bacterial and viral causes of spinal misalignment, like scoliosis. Edna Fournier is a Certified Raindrop Technique Specialist, licensed spiritual healer, aromatherapy coach, and Young Living Distributor. (512) 351-6973 •

Expecting to Fly

Leslie Kell’s Artwork Takes to the Airways Shimmers Collection Leslie Kell’s newest creations explore the freedom of flight, with images that inspire the senses and create a sense of wonder, movement and sound. Each piece involves several photographs that are carefully assembled into the design, which is developed through a series of sketches and drawings. The wings are comprised of photos of prisms and natural crystals, and the backgrounds are images captured from the flowing water of Wimberley and central Texas treetop canopies. The titles for this collection are inspired by songs with references to flight. The two shown here are homages to Neil Young (top: Expecting to Fly) and Jimi Hendrix (left: Little Wing). Leslie creates an alternate perception and a new experience that lies somewhere between space and time, lost and found moments, and what we thought we knew. She calls them Wow Moments.

ARE YOU THRIVING? (Or just re-carpeting your dungeon)

by Christina Allen Someone asked recently how a shaman truly heals, and why the average person would need a shaman. “The level shamanism works at is subtle, yet very profound.” I replied. “Do you have patterns in your life that reoccur over and over again?” I asked. “Are you stuck in a loop or cycle that you can’t seem to break, do you have an injury that won’t heal, or a chronic illness?” “Oh, I don’t know, not really,” he said. “Right now everything is going pretty well. You never know when that other shoe will drop, but hey, I get along okay.” “Exactly!” I say, “There it is...”

The other shoe.

Embedded in the very way you see the world are limits that keep you merely coping instead of thriving. While shamans remove the imprints behind illness and injury, they also work with the subtle beliefs that keep you locked into an un-empowered life. Waiting for the other shoe to drop is a coping mechanism designed to avert unmet expectations. It says things may be going well now, but don’t get your hopes up – disaster is around the corner. Believing this, we avoid disappointment when things go south – but woven into it is the next disaster, waiting to happen. We all have countless maps like this in our psyche, shaping our lives. Some are personal, and some are handed down to us through our families. Consider the woman whose angry, addictive father emotionally withdraws from her throughout her childhood. Every man she’s intimate with subsequently is angry and withdrawn, an addict, or both. She adapts by bending over backwards trying to keep the peace, even lying to protect him, just like her mother did. She tells herself if she keeps everyone happy they’ll love her and not hurt her; she becomes the ultimate people pleaser, but loses herself in the process.

When events like this happen in our lives, either because it’s too overwhelming or we didn’t have the skill set yet to deal with it, a residue of it becomes imprinted onto our souls, or

Lightbodies. These imprints then act as blueprints for how we structure our lives from then on. Think of it this way – behind the structure of every house there’s a blueprint saying where the doors and windows should be. Every time we build from this blueprint we put in these same doors and windows, just as they’re represented on the blueprint. A Lightbody is such a blueprint – for our life. It contains the energetic designs for our physical and emotional nature. Imprints, however, twist and distort our original blueprints, making living rooms into dungeons. The shaman knows that finding a better way to live with someone else’s destructive behavior is the equivalent of re-carpeting your dungeon. Until you remove these imprints, and the coping mechanisms around them, you’ll continue to download your childhood dramas and re-create various versions of them. A shaman works with your old maps through ceremony. As Einstein noted, you cannot create something from the same state from which it was created. Limitations and dysfunctional behavior come from the very coping mechanisms your intellect devised to keep yourself from further emotional pain. Shamans know these old maps in our psyches originate with imprints etched into our Lightbodies. Using only your mind to heal them doesn’t work. A shamanic healing ceremony aligns you with the very Consciousness that created you, to restore your soul. Are you tired of your old maps? Ready to align with your highest destinies instead of coping more intelligently with your old stories? If your answer is yes, consider visiting a professional shaman today. Christina Allen, shamanic healer, teacher, destiny coach, and founder of the Austin-based Blue Raven Circle of Light, combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master and Shamanic Healer based on the Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru) to help you clear imprints and align with your highest destinies. She will be sharing her wisdom in local classes soon. Call (512) 383-5561 for an appointment, or visit

ATLAS UNSHRUGGED How to get your head on straight – and why by Michael Abedin In Greek mythology, the Titans declared war on the Olympians (Zeus and Hera and them) for control of the universe. The Olympians kicked the Titans’ collective booties, and handed them down some hard time. Atlas was one of the Titans. His sentence was to spend pretty much forever holding the globe of the entire cosmos on his shoulders (not just the weight of the world, as statues show – the whole cosmic ball of wax). As sort of a karmic consolation prize, his name was handed down to books full of maps, and to the vertebra at the top of your spinal column that supports the globe of your skull. The atlas, the first cervical vertebra, is supposed to keep your head on straight, and also surrounds the brain stem, the faster than fiber optic network that carries messages back and forth between the brain and the body. If the atlas isn’t doing its job correctly, those messages can get scrambled and wonky, a phenomenon called nerve interference – sort of like having your cable company or your internet or mobile provider take over running your nervous system. (Scary, huh?)

What could precipitate such a turn of events?

All kinds of things, actually. It’s pretty hard to go through life without taking the occasional bump on your noggin. It doesn’t take a screeching car wreck or zigging when you should’ve zagged in a sporting event to inflict trauma on your skull, although those will do the job nicely. Open a cabinet door, drop something, lean down to pick it up without closing the door, and when you stand up – you know the rest. If your head gets knocked off its vertical axis even a little bit, its uneven weight can cause the spine to shift and buckle. Eventually, your bones and body structure will start to degenerate like a Miley Cyrus video. Since you don’t want yourself twerked out of shape, you get yourself to a chiropractor. There are different kinds of chiropractors, though. One branch of chiropractic specializes in putting your head back on straight, relieving the stress of a crooked cabeza. NUCCA Chiropractic targets the upper cervical area, beginning with very specific X-rays of the head and the cervical vertebrae in the neck to determine what’s amiss.

A gentle adjustment – no snap, crackle, pop – gets the atlas and the skull back in position. Stress and tension on the brain stem are relieved, and messages start flowing smoothly again. Nerve interference in the brain stem caused by an out of whack atlas can cause all kinds of problems in the body, including the more obvious ones – pain in the neck, back, joints, or extremities; TMJ syndrome; carpal tunnel syndrome; dizziness; headaches; even migraines. This type of chiropractic, however, also has the potential to help a long list of other maladies, some of them less obvious, including: • Allergies, asthma, frequent colds, flu symptoms, sinus problems. • Constipation, digestive disorders. • Heart conditions, high blood pressure. • Chronic fatigue, chronic infections, immune deficiency. • Rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, neuralgia, neuritis. • Injuries from accidents, sports. • Female disorders. • Loss of sleep, depression. • Bed wetting, child developmental problems. Even ADD and learning disabilities like dyslexia, or disorders like MS, cerebral palsy, and Parkinson’s, have been known to benefit from a gentle adjustment of the atlas to get your head on straight – and keep it there. From an anecdotal point of view, studies and statistics aside, folks who get a regular chiropractic adjustment as part of their overall healthcare regimen will tell you there’s a sense of vitality, well being, and clarity when your head, neck, and nervous system are kept in alignment. Now if only it could do something about straightening out the cable company – or Miley Cyrus. CLEAN UP YOUR MOUTH (Safely) by Michael Abedin Resolution time’s around the corner. Time to think about what to do for your health, starting January 1. (Other than “Ohh, I’ll never do that again.”) You could, f’rinstance, resolve to pay better attention to oral health – maybe get all those toxic little mercury bombs out of your mouth, the ones euphemistically called “silver fillings.” They’re more mercury than silver, though. Like a table wine, they’re a blend – 50% mercury, 30% copper, 14% tin, 14% silver, 1% zinc. In trace amounts, some of these are beneficial to the body. In large doses, they’re toxic – and like wine, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Combined, they create up to sixteen more toxic products. No problem, you say. I’ll have my dentist drill ‘em out.

Got some bad news for you.

If standard procedures are followed, you may wind up with more toxins in your bloodstream than before the amalgam fillings were removed. “Drilling ‘em out” and sucking them up with the suck it up tube (a technical term) means you’ll probably inhale a lot of vapors – fragments aside. So will your dentist, dental assistant, and the office staff, and so will the environment if the suck it up tube flushes the old amalgam down the drain instead of using contained disposal methods. If you want to be sure you get the amalgam out safely, and replace it with biocompatible materials, and get the remnants out of your system, make the term “biological dentistry” part of your resolution – and investigate what that term means to the dentist using it. Here’s how Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Care defines it, within the scope of his practice. “Biological dentistry is aesthetic, relatively non-toxic, and individually biocompatible. It can incorporate the time-proven healing methods of homeopathy, acupuncture, nutrition, physical and/ or cranio-sacral therapy, and herbology, as well as modern sciences of neural therapy, hematology, immunology, and eletcro-acupuncture.” Carpenter works with naturopath Melissa Russ, N.D. “She facilitates chelation of metals, diagnostic testing, blood chemistry analysis, and vitamin, herbal, and ozone therapy. I remove poisons, she helps support the body in healing, prior to and after the procedures.” Any serious cleanse is best done with professional guidance and techniques. If you resolve to clean up your mouth, biological dentistry is a good start. Transcend Dental Health – biological dentistry, supportive natural healthcare. (512) 255-3618

WhY the Stardust Tarot Works by Bruce P. Grether (Part 3:33 of 3:33) When you go beyond the city lights into the countryside at night and look up at the sky, you can see an abundance of heavenly lamps, the true wealth of the Universe. This is what the Ancient Egyptians called Nuit, or the Lady of the Stars, the totality of existence. Those numberless blazing points of light are also an outward reflection of the equally infinite Universe within your own body. You are what those ancients called Hadit, any point within Nuit that experiences those limitless possibilities. The Stardust Tarot works because its design reflects this fact – within you are those fantastic realms of organs, cells, molecules, atoms and subatomic energies, whose majestic structures and elegant dancing determine the order and patterns of the imagery of the deck’s Major Arcana, the trumps. The Ancient Egyptians passed down a simple yet profound teaching: As Above, So Below. As Below, So Above. And also: As Within, So Without. As Without, So Within. These simple yet subtle phrases describe precisely how and why the Stardust Tarot always tells you precisely what is going on. What lies within you and what appears to be without you, or external to your body, are, in a mysterious manner, literally One. There is, in truth, no difference, no actual distinction between your inner and outer realities. There is no “out there” there; instead, all that you perceive as the world “around you” is a sensory image fabricated by your own brain and nervous system. This doesn’t mean that everything, one hundred percent, is an illusion or unreal. However, most of it is not what you think it is. And returning full circle to the beginning of this series of articles, as I finish writing this, the clock says 4:44 PM, a sign of perfect synchronicity! To study the Universe and Nature is in fact the study of you. When you begin to accept the limits of your actual knowledge of what exists and what’s going on in existence, paradoxically you discover your limitless nature as a being – and true wisdom begins. Bruce P. Grether is a many times published novelist, Wizard, and a regular Austin All Natural contributor, and he provides readings and consultations online via the Stardust Tarot, which he created. Time to get strong.

Really strong! Just to be clear, strong doesn’t mean you have to get big and bulky. (Big and bulky doesn’t equal strong. Strong equals strong.) FMS uses the weight of a kettlebell at times as a corrective tool, to dial a movement deeper into the nervous system, and continues a handful of kettlebell exercises to work on your primary skill – mastering your body. FMS doesn’t go into full-on weight training at this point, however. From a martial arts perspective, the weight is your opponent. If you can’t control your self through shadow boxing or forms (kata), don’t expect to control your opponent. If you don’t move your own bodyweight properly, don’t expect to control a dumbbell, barbell, or kettlebell.

Part 1 of this series on the Functional Movement System (FMS) discussed creating reflexive stability, hitting reset on the nervous system, and using FMS to establish a solid foundation. Once you’ve primed your nervous system, built a stronger mind-body connection, strengthened your weakest link, removed compensation, programmed proper functional movement patterns, and greatly reduced risk of injury – now what?

How far do you want to take it?

Proper push-ups or squats? One-leg squats, one-arm push-ups, one-arm handstand push-ups? Fine goals, and there’s an FMS progression to get you there in each case. Everyone’s FMS training starts at ground zero, through a progression from start to finish, taking out guesswork by targeting weak links and preparing each muscle for the next challenge. Like Kung Fu, it’s simply focused work, over time, to achieve a skill. This applies to any and everything worthwhile – most definitely to mastery of your body, which comes down to mastery of your mind as well. Rest assured, there are no shortcuts. The goal is disciplined, consistent progression – putting in time and effort, moving at a steady pace. Once you make a goal, stick to it, learn to master your mind. Only then can you master your body. This is the way of true self-mastery. Matt Fuhrmann, founder of Tao Health and Fitness, offers Functional Movement, Primal Move, progressive calisthenics, Indian clubs, kettlebells, martial arts, yoga, qigong, Reiki, and oldtime strongman training. Cover US The Third Annual Austin All Natural

Cover Art Contest

Remember the old ads in the back of comic books, the ones with a sketch of Abe Lincoln, or a horse? The caption said, We’re looking for people who like to draw! We’re looking for people who like to draw, paint, photograph, photoshop, and otherwise exercise their creative juices. Austin All Natural is known for colorful and creative cover art, and we’re looking for new talent in 2014. Previous years’ entries were featured in articles, and winning pieces were used as covers.

• Entries must be in a high-resolution digital file (pdf or jpg, at least 300 dpi resolution), with CMYK color settings. Scanned or hardcopy submissions not accepted. • Up to three submissions of original photographic, digital, or traditional work. • Get creative. You can submit something for a specific month (like a New Year’s cover for January), or something we could use at any time. Anything clever but tasteful that won’t get the magazine (or publisher) burned by crazed fundamentalists of any spiritual persuasion. • Happy, smiling, holistically healthy people, arms raised joyfully in the air, will be immediately disqualified. A blood oath was taken early on never to use that old tired cliché on a cover. (It’s our contest – we can do what we want to.) • A strong central image and colors that grab the eye walking past a magazine rack twenty feet away is best. Detailed and subtle doesn’t work. • Entries featured in an article, and may be used later. • Entries must be received by Dec. 10, 2013, accompanied by the artist’s name, email, and phone number. (No phone number, no entry.) Send all entries to: and you’ll receive an entry and release form (and may also request full, detailed specs).

Oh Help Me, Dear Santa… Well, here I am again, Santa, writing the exact same letter I’ve written you before. My publisher, Michael Abedin, tells me you’re really busy and I should be patient, and he’s gonna help me write it. He says if I get everything I want, maybe I’ll grow up to be a big, strong magazine and some candy cane will whisk me away for a ton of cash, and I can send letters to him in the South of France every month, with checks in them. (Actually, I think he said “sucker”, but I like candy canes better, especially at Christmas.) Anyway, here’s what he said I should ask for. First, someone to sell ads: • He says they should know the difference between Reiki and reflexology and a hole in the ground (he’s funny), and be able to make their own hours, without him holding their hand. • If they show him they can sell, he’ll give them lots of prospects, and they can make some decent bucks and still have their own holistic practice – BUT (a big ol’ butt, he says – he’s really funny) it’s commission only. If they tell him they need a couple of grand a month to start, he may forget he’s not running a karate school, like he used to. (A couple of grand what, Santa?) • They should know how to talk to people, turn in a call sheet, and check in with him by phone every day or so. If they have internet marketing or writing or graphic skills, that’s even better. Oh, yeah. If they just moved here, worked retail once, and are, like, really interested in yoga and healthy food – don’t waste his time. He’d also like me to have someone interested in helping him take a gold mine of quality content and turn my website,, into a digital destination like no one’s ever seen, for a piece of the action – BUT (another big one, haha) he said he knows just enough about that to know when someone’s handing him a load of something I probably can’t say without getting in trouble. That’s what I want. Maybe you could surprise him for me and bring him something he said he’d like – a pony! (What’s a Shelby Mustang GT, Santa?)

The Pyramid of Awareness

by HeatherAsh Amara

In the Toltec teachings there are three masteries – awareness, transformation, and intent, which don Miguel Ruiz also calls the mastery of love. We don’t “graduate” from one mastery and then leave it behind as we move to the next. Instead, visualize the masteries more like a pyramid: • Have a strong base of awareness as the foundation for everything you do. • The middle layer, transformation, arises from aware action. • The pinnacle of the pyramid is mastery of intent – the love child of awareness and transformation.

Here comes the judge.

Striving for mastery in anything, from playing the piano to living The Four Agreements, takes practice. And more practice. There isn’t a stopping point once you “get it right.” Top athletes and musicians practice their craft more than anyone else. The key is to find joy in the practice. As aikido master George Leonard writes: How can I describe the kind of person who is on a path to mastery? First, I don’t think it should be so dead serious. I think you should understand the joy of it, the fun of it. Being willing to see just how far you can go is the self-surpassing quality that we human beings are stuck with. Evolution is a whole long story of mastery. It’s being real. It’s being human. It’s being who we are. To master awareness is to pay attention, without fixating, on all aspects of being – mind, emotions, body, energy, and the environment around you. That’s a lot to be aware of, so attitude makes all the difference. You’re probably already a master of paying attention to a small part of your mind – your dead serious judge. Practice over and over again replacing the voice of the judge, in favor of curiously witnessing all aspects of yourself until you can step back and take in all your habits and patterns. When you get present, you’ll see that your judge, even though it can seem loud and all consuming, is only one tiny part of your overall experience. Use awareness as spotlights. Illuminate where you are, and get a bigger picture of who you are. HeatherAsh is the founder of Toci, the Toltec Center of Creative Intent in Austin, and author of The Toltec Path of Transformation. Dear Ashtara:

Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dearest Ashtara, I’m feeling like I require a new job at this time. The one I have depletes my energy. Is it time to move on? What should I do next, if so? Also, when will I have a boyfriend again? Jessica, 31, Austin, TX

Dear Ashtara, I’m very limited in what I can eat because of many food allergies and sensitivities. What do I need to do in order for my body to accept most foods and absorb the nutrients so I can eat normally again? Nancy, 57, Austin, TX

Dear Jessica, It looks like you are destined to be the owner of a small business. Therefore, save all you can. You were born to be a lawyer, author, engineer, designer, architect, counselor, trainer, or a business owner. Do what you love and the money will follow. It seems like your next step is to become a professional. At that time, you will not do anything but enjoy your work. Your next partner will be kind, tender and loving. Your angel is Michael.

Dear Nancy, You are allergic to white foods. What you need to do is eat green cabbage by itself 20 or 30 times, steamed or raw, at least 3-9 bites. Do not eat anything white while you are eating the cabbage. At the end, you will not be allergic to white foods. Next, you are sensitive to the following: anything green, meat, cheese (except feta or goat cheese), millet, sugar (so eat raw honey instead), wheat, gluten, pollen, and anything greasy or oily. It would be good to try an all-raw diet for three weeks, cutting out greasy foods. Your high teacher is Gabriel.

Dear Ashtara, All my life I seem to have been shunned. At work it’s great for a while and then everyone seems to avoid me. I have never had a serious relationship. Why do I repulse everyone? Am I being punished? I’m not mean. Michelle, 43, TX

Dear Michelle, Count your many blessings daily instead of torturing yourself over anxieties and things that did not happen, then your ship will come in. It may sound like a tall order, but many of us metaphysicians and spiritual tykes had to learn the exact same thing. Become a DEITY ON EARTH. For when you were birthed from the King’s Chamber, God Himself said, “Prepare for a final lifetime on earth and acknowledge everyone but self. For as you acknowledge others, they will acknowledge you.” For example, if you are in a cafeteria line, ask the family behind you if they are in a hurry. If they say they are in a hurry, step aside, and let them go ahead of you. It might seem trite but that is what you are birthed for. Your Archangel is Zadkiel. Your Guardian Angel is Michael.

Dear Ashtara, I think I am developing the abilities of a medium. What is the next step? AKB, 39, Austin, TX Dear AKB, Keep tuning in. You are being guided at a rapid pace – therefore, persistence is the name of the game. Melchizedek is your guide. Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or phone) that include psychic, medical, profound healings, questions answered and more. Ashtara Sasha White is a “gifted” psychic, profound healer and channel from the Ascended Masters/Archangels. She is also a Reiki Master Teacher, Sound Current Healing Master Teacher, speaker and teacher of the Light. Join her group on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6:30PM. See her events at www.AshtaraSashaWhite. com. Call (512) 278-0559 or email to submit your question for ‘Dear Ashtara’ (10 to 20 words) with name, age, city and state.

Bach Chronicles, Part Twenty-two

In the 1930’s, English physician Edward Bach created a series of thirty-six flower remedies, prepared from plants found in his native England, to address underlying mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of physical disease. by Michael Abedin
…behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying… we have seen his star in the east. Matthew 2: 1-2 Edward Bach created a number of flower essences for sadness, but none so profound as the one that can lighten the darkness like the star that guided three magicians to Bethlehem in Matthew’s Christmas story. Sorrow or loss, especially when it’s sudden and unexpected, slams into your energetic system like an NFL linebacker. Stays there, too (as a lot of old NFL players are discovering). Trauma can’t tell the difference between five minutes ago and fifty years ago – when it sticks, you’re stuck. Messy breakup, accident, sudden death, unexpected bad news? They may be the nasty old albatross you’ve been hauling around for years, dragging you down mentally, emotionally, spiritually, even physically. You can wind up as a druggie, to justify your numbness – or a metaphysical junkie, endlessly tapping, breathing, and flying with the spirit guides to dig out those aches and pains in your body or heart that never seem to go completely away. Almost seems like karma, huh?

Karma ends, it’s been said, when forgiveness begins. That’s the message of grace, of the star in the east, and of Bach’s Star of Bethlehem remedy. Star is a key ingredient in the famous Rescue Remedy, helping your energetic grid deal with the shock of sudden trauma before it completely sets in. For old, deep wounds, combine it with Walnut, the remedy for releasing old ties to the past – it can even be a catalytic remedy when other remedies aren’t working, or when you feel like you need all thirty-eight of them. Psychosomatic has gotten a bad rap as imaginary illness, but it really just means your mind’s making your body sick. Star of Bethlehem can soothe them both – and your spirit. Michael Abedin offers instruction on flower remedy combinations. (512) 879-7299.
