FOREWORD Thank you very much for expressing your interest in studying in the UK. The UK is one of the top study destinations for Thai students.

UK universities are highly recognised around the world, two of which are ranked in the top three. There are also high quality school and pre-university programmes in the UK which can help prepare students to progress confidently towards higher education.

School education has been increasingly popular among young Thai students with approximately 500* studying in the UK each year. The number of young Thai students has increased by 20% over the past five years in this sector. There are currently many courses available to prepare students for higher education to suit their needs: boarding and day schools, public and private colleges, and university foundation programmes. Details of the various options are included in this publication. This year, the publication will also feature British schools located in Thailand or in the region, giving students the option of UK qualifications.

School education and pre-university programmes in the UK are not only designed to prepare students for higher education with academic support but help to build the skills necessary for the young to step into future international working environments and become global citizens. Skills, including working in an intercultural environment, English proficiency and leadership can be built during the various courses available at schools or colleges in the UK.

The United Kingdom is a parliamentary democracy this means the government is elected by the people. There is a general election once every five years. The Prime Minister leads the government with the support of the cabinet and ministers.

The Queen is Head of State in the United Kingdom. As a constitutional monarch, Her Majesty does not "rule" the country, but the royal family fulfils important ceremonial and formal roles with respect to government.

Most UK schools teach a mix of international pupils and local UK pupils. 'Boarders' are pupils who live at the school. 'Day pupils' live with their families and return home at the end of the school day. This mix helps to create a good social atmosphere.

The UK school system

Primary education is for children aged four or five up to 11 or 13. You might hear this referred to as primary school, infant school, junior school, prepreparatory school or preparatory school.

Including AS and A levels, International Baccalaureate and undergraduate study - can lead to university, an apprenticeship or a job.

If you do not meet the academic or English language requirements set by the university that you are interested in, then a pathways course can help you plot a route onto your chosen degree.

The International Foundation Programme is specially designed to enable international students to enhance their academic and English skills for entry into university. All schools - whether they are state or independent - have to be registered with the government education departments in England and Wales, or Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Education departments lay down minimum standards of facilities and teaching and can enforce them. All schools are regularly inspected by the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (OFSTED) or by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. In addition, OFSTED inspects boarding facilities to ensure that they meet national standards.

Independent colleges can choose to join the Council for Independent Further and Higher Education (CIFE). The University of Bath International Foundation Year (IFY) is a one-year, full-time licensed course specifically designed and quality assured by the University of Bath. It is delivered by Bath College, the University’s partner organisation in the centre of Bath, where all your teaching will take place.

The IFY gives you the opportunity to learn how to study in the UK, and to develop the appropriate skills for when you begin your degree at the University of Bath.

As a candidate on the IFY, you will find yourself on a dedicated track to the University of Bath. You will target a specific Bath degree, study three relevant subjects, and work to achieve a set of specific grades that allow guaranteed automatic progression to your desired degree course.

Typically, more than three-quarters of University of Bath International Foundation Year students progress to the University each year.

Oxford Sixth Form College is a highly successful independent college located in the heart of Oxford, specialising in A-Level, BTEC and GCSE courses for students aged 15-19. Flexible start dates are available, with scholarships of up to 40% on offer for successful students.

We also offer the NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY), giving students guaranteed progression to 16 UK universities (six of which are Russell Group) as well as access to over 60 universities worldwide.

IFY Pathways include Medicine, Science, Engineering and Business. Students will study three academic modules and English for Academic Purposes (EAP), with a total of 20 hours of classroom tuition per week.

This NCUK IFY starts in September each year; students must be at least 17 years in order to be considered and eligible students have the chance to apply for a scholarship of up to 20%.

Our college is friendly, welcoming and a home away from home for young people of many different cultures. There are plenty of extra-curricular activities and social events throughout the year to let students get to know their peers better.

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Foundation comprises four schools, each with its unique qualities, but all sharing a common purpose of providing students with a first-class education and the opportunity to work towards higher education and a successful career. Rugby School Thailand is a coeducational British international school for day and boarding pupils, taking children aged 2-18 years old. It is the first international outpost of the prestigious 453-year-old Rugby School UK. The school is set on an 80-acre campus in stunning Chonburi countryside, around 1.5 hours from Bangkok and 20 minutes from Pattaya.

It has state-of-the-art facilities and plenty of space for children to enjoy healthy, active lifestyles. Rugby School Thailand follows the British private school model, with smaller classes and longer days that integrate sport and co-curricular activities (including everything from touch rugby, Chanbara and coding, to archery, sailing and bushcraft, to name a few).

The International Foundation Year (IFY) is for talented students normally from outside the UK, who have had at least 11 or 12 years full time education, but who may not have English as a first language or the typical qualifications for direct entry. The IFY will help you to develop your English language skills as well as preparing you for academic study in a UK university.

At the end of the IFY programme, you will automatically progress to your chosen degree, provided you achieve the required grades. IFY students are eligible for a four-year visa to study in the UK.

SCHOLARSHIPS The Southampton International Merit Scholarships award up to £3,000 to eligible students as an automatic reduction in course fees for the first year of the course. WellingtonCollegeBangkok Wellington College International School Bangkok (WCIB) opened in August 2018 and enjoyed an enormously successful first year, making excellent progress in establishing the school both educationally and with the beginnings of a strong Wellington College community in Thailand. The school recently passed a highly stringent inspection by COBIS (Council of British International Schools) to earn their highest level of accreditation, COBIS Patron’s Accreditation, becoming the first school in the world to achieve this distinction within the first year of opening.

Located in the fast-growing Krungthep Kreetha area of eastern Bangkok, the School boasts a state of the art educator-designed campus and excellent sports facilities. It is a coeducational day school for students age 2-18 years, and is currently enrolling students from Pre-Nursery through to

Year 7 (ages 2 to 11), and will eventually in the future offer IGCSE in Year 10-11 and either A-levels or the IB Diploma for Years 12-13.

The bold, bespoke school design responds to the education ethos of Wellington College, as well as the climate and culture of Thailand.

Eschewing ‘institutional’ corridors, the layout introduces flexible communal Learning Studios for small-group discussions, individual work and constructive play, allowing teachers to reinforce concepts of independent learning from an early age all the way through to the Senior School. It also allows children to remain indoors when temperature or air quality levels demand it. The campus will continue to develop in the coming years, with a new 600 seat performing arts Theatre opening in early 2020 and the Senior School opening in 2021.

The School aims to deliver a world class academic and all-round education in English, underpinned by the Wellington Identity and values that are already very much alive. The Wellington community is strong, with the parent body being already vocal advocates of the school, and it has also attracted some of the best teachers in the industry to Bangkok, under the leadership of Founding Master Christopher Nicholls.
