Why choose a UK school?

UK schools offer pupils an outstanding education, helping them to develop their skills and progress to university. All UK schools have to meet strict government standards on the quality of their teaching, facilities and student care. Many UK schools combine beautiful, centuries-old buildings with a mix of modern classrooms and traditional architecture. The excellent facilities help make living and learning a great experience and pupils will improve their English skills while they study. Most UK schools teach a mix of international pupils and local UK pupils. 'Boarders' are pupils who live at the school. 'Day pupils' live with their families and return home at the end of the school day. This mix helps to create a good social atmosphere. Primary education is for children aged four or five up to 11 or 13. You might hear this referred to as primary school, infant school, junior school, prepreparatory school or preparatory school. Secondary education is for pupils aged 11 or 13 to 16. You might hear this referred to as secondary school, high school or senior school. In the last two years of secondary school (age 14 to 16), most pupils study for GCSE qualifications. Alternatives include Standard grades and Intermediates in Scotland, or the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Sixth form is for students aged 16 to 18. The two years are often called Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth. At sixth form level, most pupils take A-levels. Including AS and A levels, International Baccalaureate and undergraduate study - can lead to university, an apprenticeship or a job. If you do not meet the academic or English language requirements set by the university that you are interested in, then a pathways course can help you plot a route onto your chosen degree. The International Foundation Programme is specially designed to enable international students to enhance their academic and English skills for entry into university. All schools - whether they are state or independent - have to be registered with the government education departments in England and Wales, or Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Education departments lay down minimum standards of facilities and teaching and can enforce them. All schools are regularly inspected by the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills (OFSTED) or by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. In addition, OFSTED inspects boarding facilities to ensure that they meet national standards. Independent colleges can choose to join the Council for Independent Further and Higher Education (CIFE). All children under the age of 16 should have a guardian. This should be someone resident in the UK, normally over the age of 25, who can care for them if they are suddenly ill, or during vacations, half terms and exeat weekend if they cannot go home. Most schools insist that a guardian is appointed. However, in Scotland, this is a requirement in all schools.
