The UK has a fascinating history dating back to 6500 BC. All over the UK you’ll find monuments marking its history, from Stonehenge to Buckingham Palace. The UK is also home to 31 cultural and natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The United Kingdom is a parliamentary democracy – this means the government is elected by the people. There is a general election once every five years. The Prime Minister leads the government with the support of the cabinet and ministers.

The Queen is Head of State in the United Kingdom. As a constitutional monarch, Her Majesty does not “rule” the country, but the royal family fulfils important ceremonial and formal roles with respect to government.

Accreditation UK is a quality assurance scheme for schools, colleges, and universities which offer courses in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The scheme gives an assurance of quality to international students who are taking or are planning to take an English language course in the UK. Studying at a British Council accredited centre means that you can be assured the centre has met high standards. Independent inspectors carry out regular inspections of all centres, which include checks on teaching, premises and accommodation.

Applying to study

To apply for an English language course visit the website and contact the school or college for an application form and prospectus, and complete the application form. If offered a place, the reply will confirm accommodation requirements and request a deposit. Once the school receives payment it will send a confirmation letter, which can be used to support a student visitor visa application. For a full student visa a certificate for acceptance to study (CAS) will be sent.

Accommodation options

Accreditation UK centres will help students research the available accommodation options. Typically options include: ww Residential - the student lives in student accommodation. They rent in halls of residence, student houses or flats, usually with their own room but sharing the kitchen and bathroom. ww Homestay - students live with the family, with their own bedroom or sharing with another student. This is a good option if the student wants to learn the language from native speakers and experience more of the British culture ww A hostel or hotel - students also stay in hostels or hotel - there is a wide range on offer, from budget student hostels to five star hotels.

Celtic English Academy is a British Council accredited school in the heart of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. This summer, we will be running a unique Junior Summer Programme in Colwyn Bay (North Wales) from 04 July - 15 August 2018 for 11-17-year olds. This is an outstanding location only 1 hour from Manchester Airport. Wales was awarded the Best UK Youth Travel Destination (British Youth Travel Awards, 2016) with North Wales specifically rated as one of the Top 10 Places in the World to Visit (Lonely Planet, 2017). Our Junior Summer Programme will be based at Rydal Penrhos School and is available to both individual students and groups. International House London has been a specialist in English language teaching and training since 1959. Our English courses are a fun and interactive way for young learners aged 8–17 to learn English, make new friends, and improve their leadership and communication skills. We opened our first Young Learner centre in 2011, and since then have expanded the programme to include 9 different courses that are now attended by students from over 35 different countries! We offer centres in the city or in the beautiful countryside. At each centre, our experienced and professional staff provide a safe, secure learning environment for students; emphasising the importance of culture, physical activity and fun. We offer the chance for students to learn English and Leadership skills, to explore famous UK attractions and to make friends for life in a safe, nurturing environment. Daily schedules include morning classes with sporting, cultural and social activities in the afternoons and evenings. English classes are fast-paced and interactive, students are encouraged to practise their new language skills outside the classroom. Students take part in afternoon sports activities such as football, basketball and swimming as well as non-sportive activities such as art and crafts, drama and photography. In the evenings our students collectively come together for activities such as quiz nights, discos, karaoke and fashions shows allowing students to make use of their new language ability in a relaxed environment. Students are immersed in English and use it every day whilst on our programmes. Interacting with other students in real-life situations helps students improves their

communication skills and fluency whilst building confidence in using the language. Each of our centres is limited to a maximum of 20% of any nationality which ensures we have a strong nationality mix and that students mix with other young learners from all over the world, make new friends and communicate in English. At IH London 33% of our students return to our courses which shows how much our students value our teaching and the experiences we offer. We specialise in providing junior summer language and activity courses at top UK boarding schools; Dulwich College, Wycombe Abbey and Caterham School. The Oxford English Centre, established in 1979, is one of the leading English language providers in the UK. Our Summer Teen Programme is designed specifically for international young learners who are looking to combine an English language course along with a varied, supervised social activity programme. Many of our clients come back to study year after year. The Oxford English Centre welcomes individual young learners as well as young learners within an organised group. Students have the opportunity to enjoy their English language study combined with experiencing the modern English way of life. Summer Teen Programme facts: 2018 Summer Teen Programme dates: Monday 2 July 2018 – Friday 24 August 2018. Teen Programme Duration: 1 – 8 weeks. Age range: 14 – 17 years old. Social activity programme: Supervised morning activities plus 3 evening activities (Mon-Fri). Tuition per week: 20 Lessons per week. St Edmund’s College is England’s oldest Catholic school, celebrating its 450th anniversary this year. The Summer School is an integral part of the College and has recently been awarded ‘Joint Top Young Learner Specialist’ and ‘Top Boarding School Summer School’ by EL Gazette Magazine (March, 2018). The Summer School welcomes children from Thailand and around 40 other countries each year, and offers comprehensive academic, excursions, social and activities programmes. The children attend 12 hours of English Language classes each week, along with 8 hours of ‘English Through Other Subjects’ lessons which include subjects such as ceramics, horse riding and SCUBA diving. Our campus is 40 miles north of London, set in a historic building in a beautiful rural location. We are close to several airports (Stansted is 30 minutes’ drive, Luton is 1 hour and Heathrow is 1 hour 30 minutes), and we have first rate facilities including a swimming pool, Food Technology classroom and extensive sports facilities. We offer two 3-week courses with fixed dates; this is because we find that when children all arrive and leave on the same days there is a greater sense of community spirit. Each 3-week course has 5 excursions to places such as London and Oxford, and the 16+ age group (ages 16-17) will be going on overnight trips to Cambridge and Bath in 2018. We take the welfare and well-being of our children very seriously. The Summer

School has an infirmary staffed by qualified nurses 24 hours a day, and a dedicated Welfare Manager and Deputy Welfare Manager, whose job it is to ensure that all of our children are healthy and happy. Severnvale Academy is a family-run school in Shrewsbury, central England. The teaching and lessons for the junior summer programme are held on a self- contained campus. It is modern and recently refurbished, having undergone a £15 million investment to update the facilities. It provides state-of-the-art classrooms, a student “hub” for socialising at breaks and is also home to one of Shrewsbury’s largest sport centres. Course Options Starline Course: 20 lessons (15 hours) of general English per week alongside two full day excursions and four half day excursions/activities. Express Course: 28 lessons (21 hours) of general English per week alongside two full day excursions and two half day excursions/activities. The lessons cover a range of skills including general English language, intensive grammar, active communication and use of English. In 2017 we had 14 different nationalities on the course. The Town Shrewsbury itself is a relatively small medieval town with around 100,000 inhabitants. It is full of history, yet not overcrowded with international visitors. It benefits from having many major cities, attractions and beautiful countryside on its doorstep. Wales, and the cities of Liverpool and Birmingham are all within 1-2 hours’ drive. The contrast of these locations is unforgettable and truly inspiring. We

can therefore provide a wealth of excursions to a variety of places without the students having to travel long distances each day.

Cultural Awareness and The Homestay Experience The host families welcome our junior students as part of their family. The experience allows them to be accommodated in a local environment, providing first-hand experience of how families live and communicate in English. It also offers an informal opportunity to ask cultural questions and practise English outside of the classroom. Stonyhurst Language School, founded in 2012, is based at Stonyhurst College, a prestigious Jesuit boarding and day school in the North West of England. The College itself was founded in 1593 and stands in 2,500 acres of beautiful Ribble Valley countryside and yet is only an hour away from Manchester and Liverpool. The School offers courses of 2 and 4 weeks for students aged 10 to 16. 23 hours per week of English are taught from Elementary to Advanced. In addition, 2 supervised homework sessions of 45 minutes. Classes are small, with a maximum of 12 students and are split wherever possible into students aged 10-13 and 14-16. Students are correctly placed through an assessment test on arrival. Students are able to choose what they wish to study during the afternoon class and some of the classes which are on offer take place in the Stonyhurst observatory, museum and learner’s garden. New for 2018 is the Tennis Academy, which will only operate during Course Two. Students will learn English in the mornings and have intensive tennis coaching led by a Level 4, LTA Senior Performance Tennis Coach during the afternoons. Students will integrate with the Language School for excursions, evening activities and English tuition. Pastoral Care is an important feature of the Language School. There is a generous staffing and supervision ratio, a Director of Pastoral Care to oversee

student welfare and House Parents in each boarding area. A nurse is also on duty daily and we are close to other medical facilities. The accommodation is of high quality, consisting of single and twin bedded rooms with many rooms en-suite. The sporting and leisure facilities are varied and exciting, including archery, paintballing, shooting range, mountain biking and many others. Stonyhurst has its own 25 metre swimming pool, 9 hole golf course and also a brand new indoor 2 court tennis dome. There are 2 excursions per week to local attractions, including Alton Towers Theme Park, Manchester, Liverpool, shopping and a theatre trip. A full and varied timetable keeps students busy all day.

Wimbledon School of English runs a summer school for junior students at the beautiful Lord Wandsworth College, one of the UK’s premier boarding schools, which is located just one hour outside of London. The campus is one of the largest in Europe and equipped with classrooms, dining facilities, boarding accommodation, a theatre and state of the art sports facilities. Students have everything they need within a few minutes’ walk. We teach right up to C2 level so our courses are challenging even for those in international schools. Aside from General English courses, our students participate in Language Skills Workshops such as Junior Journalism, Film Making and Social Media, British Pop Culture, The Language of Sport or Debating and Presentations. These help students develop their language in specialist areas, while picking up some new practical skills along the way. Each week they will work on a different project such as a mini film, a newspaper or a presentation. The rest of the afternoon is spent doing sports and cultural activities in small groups and getting a chance to practise your English and make new friends. Our students come from all over the world and the top 5 nationalities are Italian, French, Spanish, German and Serbian. 3 times per week, students have the opportunity to go off campus and visit different cities in the South of England including London, Oxford, Windsor, Bath and many more. You’ll have a guided tour of the city, entrance to a famous sight and some free time for

shopping! Accommodation is in traditional boarding houses, a bit like Hogwarts! You’ll share with another student or students of a similar age but a different nationality. This is to make sure you are always practising your English. Meals are provided on campus and it’s a healthy, varied menu, including British classics such as fish and chips.
