President’s

Thank you all for participating in the election of your Property Owners Association Board. For the Board, you have chosen me, Nancy Sislow as President, Trey Giarusso as Vice-President, Bill Blackwood as Treasurer and Meg Damiens as Secretary with Directors Stuart Nutting, Ronnie LaFontaine, Ernie Lee, Bob Pinot, Stuart Stromeyer, Michael Tubbs and Gary Becker as Ex Officio. We are all honored to have the opportunity to serve you, the members, by assuring that the amenities are maintained as presented to us, by assuring that your membership fees are wisely spent in contributing to

that end, and that the wonderful team who works so hard to accomplish that goal is well-supported. We all enjoyed the Member Appreciation picnic held at The Club after the election results were announced. Your POA team did a marvelous job of serving delicious burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad and cole slaw, and cookies and brownies on a hot June afternoon. Everyone seemed to enjoy the company, comradery, and the joy of celebration in our beautiful club.

As you may know, Diamondhead was developed by the Purcell Corporation back in 1972 as a resort community, with the initial goal to serve those near the coast with a place to retreat during the hot summers or long weekends throughout

the year. This resort was designed to serve as many interests as were known then – people who loved being on the water and in the water, people who loved to fly, people who enjoyed tennis, people who played golf, and people who just enjoyed being outdoors all year round. Diamondhead (named so because it has the highest point along the Gulf Coast between Florida and Texas) has morphed over the years to become a full-time community with all the amenities of an outstanding resort. We are so fortunate to live here!

This Board, as all those that preceded it, is dedicated to maintaining the amazing amenities of this community for generations to come. I hope to share with you, in future reports, the

history of Diamondhead POA, trying to capture all that has transpired to make it the resort community it is today. And

in doing so, I hope to demonstrate the wonders of all we have and the benefits that membership holds for everyone here. Thank you for the opportunity to help keep Diamondhead amenities moving forward.

East Hancock Library launches ‘Diamondhead Reads’

July is the month for fireworks and gathering together to celebrate our great country. Our community will kick off a celebratory event as well! Our first annual “Diamondhead Reads” event begins this month. What if everyone in the community read the same book, and then came together to discuss it? Let’s see what that would look like.

The “community reads” idea is national in scope, and the Hancock County Library System is promoting the initiative locally in Diamondhead. A committee has chosen a book and a path to begin our community reading journey. The book is My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver, by Martin

Diamondhead Scouts Troop 210 Complete Summer Camp 2024

Diamondhead Youth Traded Wi-Fi for Wi-Fry at Camp Tiak: Scouts Sizzled in the Great Outdoors. Diamondhead BSA Troop 210 marched off to Camp Tiak, bidding farewell to Wi-Fi and hello to Wi-Fry in a week-long adventure from June 2 to June 8, 2024. Scouts dove into new experiences, honed their skills, and earned merit badges faster than you could say “s’mores.” New friendships blossomed like wildflowers, and old ones rekindled by the campfire’s glow, as they braved Mississippi’s fickle weather, featuring everything from sunny skies to spontaneous rain dances. Despite the rugged conditions, Troop 210 thrived. Armed with new leak-free tents, scouts were finally free from midnight surprise showers. The camp staff harmonized scout songs with gusto (and some enthusiastic off-key notes). Scouts mastered skills from fire building to mosquito dodging, and the First Year Scouts embarked on their epic quest for the Scout Rank, filled with knot-tying, fire-starting, and compass-confusion adventures. Adventure awaited—and so did the band-aids! The scouts tackled the day’s heat like champs, cooling off with a swim in Tiak Lake and feasting on fried chicken that would have made Colonel Sanders green with envy. They faced a surprise weather remix of wind and rain, embarked on new adventures like canoe flipping (totally on purpose), and tested their wilderness survival skills (mostly hiding from

mosquitoes). Legendary Assistant Scoutmaster Chad leveled up to Range Safety Officer, ensuring scouts learned shooting sports with safety and style. Way to go, Chad!

On Wednesday, Troop 210 domi-

nated the Gaga ball arena, claiming victory over other troops and snagging the coveted Spirit Stick—a prize more sought after than Wi-Fi at camp! The scouts soaked up knowledge like sponges, diving into horsemanship, first

aid, canoeing, and the First Year Camper program. After a packed schedule, they squeezed in some epic game time until lights out. Victory, learning, and fun—Troop 210 did it all!

As the fourth day of camp wound down, a squadron of C-130s zoomed overhead, low and loud, giving everyone a much-needed jolt of energy and making them wonder if they were about to be drafted. (Shoutout to Troop 205 Long Beach, MS for the epic flyover coordination!)

The day was packed with aquatic adventures, epic Gaga ball battles, and a last-minute scramble to finish merit badges that had somehow slipped through the cracks. Friday’s mission: catching up on missed requirements—because who knew mastering a bowline knot could be so tricky?

The final feat was a 5-mile hike, supporting first-year campers and fostering troop camaraderie. Scouts demonstrated exceptional esprit de corps, singing songs learned throughout the week. With a sense of accomplishment, every scout yawned and slept soundly as the scoutmasters drove them home to Diamondhead. After a week filled with traditional scouting activities, Troop 210 successfully completed their expedition at Camp Tiak.

The Scoutmasters of BSA Scouts America Troop 210 extend heartfelt gratitude to all the parents and guardians for entrusting us with their children’s safety. This

endeavor was part of our commitment to developing the leaders of tomorrow. These young men and women of Diamondhead successfully completed an arduous and adventurous week filled with outdoor activities and educational experiences second to none. We confidently affirm that these scouts are on the path to a promising future, representing the best of Diamondhead, Mississippi, and America.

The Diamondhead Democrats, Progressives, Independents Alliance (DDPIA) will hold its July meeting on Thursday, July 18 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church located at 5303 Diamondhead Circle. Meet and greet time is followed by a business meeting and a featured speaker. Past speakers include the Diamondhead City Manager, the Hancock County Library Director, the Hancock County Schools Superintendent, the Diamondhead Mayor and many more informative speakers. DDPIA is a fun and inclusive group that welcomes you to join us.

It’s definitely beach and flip-flop weather… but it’s also a great time for hikes along shady trails listening to bird-calls. And that’s what we’ve been doing, starting at the Sandhill Crane Refuge, Gautier, MS. in late May. We didn’t see any cranes, but we walked through an abundance of pitcher plants along a pine-shaded trail. Lovely morning followed by lunch at Phonecia in Ocean Springs. Drove home along the beach… yeah… that’s why we’re here…

We also explored Overlook at Old Fort Bayou in Ocean Springs, a new trail. This trailhead is hard to spot as it starts off the parking lot of the Inlet Condos; but it’s a nice, shady loop that provides glimpses of the bayou. Didn’t see much wildlife (other than an abundance of flying insects), but enjoyed the short trail followed by lunch at the Blue Dog in Ocean

ond floor, since we spent all of our time on the first floor during our previous visit. Of special interest was the exhibit featuring hats and head-gear from around the world. Our lunch at Dauphin’s on the 34th floor of the historic Trustmark Bank building was again outstanding, with a spectacular 360-degree view of Mobile and environs.

In mid-June we headed for Buttercup Flats in Wiggins with the anticipation of viewing the emerging pitcher plants. What a surprise to find scorched vegetation for miles. And while the large trees and lofty pines were singed, it was the low underbrush and (sob) the pitcher plants that were turned to piles of brown leaves surrounded by blackened logs and stumps. After a short hike along an access road, we headed for lunch at Fat Daddy’s. It was “burger day” which meant that along with a buffet loaded down with sides like mac ‘n cheese, greens, baked beans and salads, we all were provided a giant burger (must’ve been a whole pound of

meat). As we noshed and discussed the fire-damaged forest, we told our waiter where we had been and what we saw. He asked a group seated nearby if they knew anything about the fire. It turned out that they were US Forest Service personnel who confirmed that the fire had been a “controlled burn” to remove excess undergrowth and promote rejuvenation of ferns and grass. They assured us that the pitcher plants will be back next spring. Our Ship Island Boat Trip & Exploration took place in late June, so that adventure will be covered in a future article. With several of us planning to travel during the next month, we decided to suspend hikes until August. We will re-convene on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Kanaka Room, DH Country Club 6:00pm to make plans. Of course, there may be hikers who will announce “popup hikes”. For information on

those, please visit our Facebook page, DH Geaux Hiking. If you aren’t a member, just ask to join, answer a couple of easy questions (e.g. Do you like to hike?) and the admin will let you in. Until then… Geaux

• DIAMONDHEAD MARDI GRAS

The Krewe of Diamondhead has been busy filling the calendar with fun events and meetings to wrap up their Mardi Gras Year. The Krewe held their annual Theme Party recently to say good bye to Abracadabra. Members dressed in fun attire to party the night away with music, food, drinks and comradery. The magical evening included a buffet dinner that gave the attendees choices between Italian, Asian and good ole Southern cuisine. It was a fantastic night and a great send off to such a fun theme.

The Krewe then held their annual membership meeting to wrap up their Mardi Gras year. The meeting was held at the home of President Jeffery Hardesty and his wife, Stephanie. Members brought chairs and coolers for this casual meeting. Appetizers were

provided as members socialized and turned in applications and ballots for the election.

President Hardesty called the meeting to order. Each board member reported on their activities for the previous year. Once all old business was reported, new business was brought before the membership with the election results of the new officers and directors. Positions up for election were, President, Treasurer, Secretary, Social Director and Publicity Director.

Board members are elected for two-year terms and positions are staggered so that there will not be a completely new board at any given time. The newly elected officers are, President, Jeremy Damiens; Treasurer, Tim Kennedy; Secretary, Jamie Stockstill; Social Director, Sandy Hatam and Publicity Director, Robin Gaines. The Krewe looks forward

to the new board members making this Krewe more successful than ever.

After the new board was announced the meeting was adjourned and members continued visiting. The new season for the Krewe of Diamondhead will begin July1,

Diamondhead continues to grow on the junior golf scene and has been selected by the Gulf States PGA to host a Local Qualifier on Thursday, July 11th, and the Sub-Regional Championship on Saturday, August 17th, for the 2024-2025 Drive, Chip, and Putt Championship. We are excited and proud to be part of this incredible event conducted annually

by the Gulf States PGA, USGA, Masters, and the PGA of America. We will be one of about 350 local qualifying sites across the country.

We will be hosting our Magnolia Classic on July 6-7. The format will be a 2-person scramble with 18 holes being played each day. We already have a full field with teams on the waiting list. Thank you to all that continue to support Diamondhead golf!

Please be sure to post your scores in GHIN so that you have an accurate handicap index. Make sure if you play, you post. Any questions concerning your golf handicap can be directed to one of our Handicap Committee members. DWGAN GOLfING NeWS frOM MAY 2024

Tuesday, May 7th, found us playing our Annual Scotch Doubles. This is an alternate shot 18 hole game followed by a luncheon. Since many of our participants are spouses, this event has often been lovingly called our “Divorce Open.” Because of the Alternate Shot format, you may find that you have put your partner into a tough spot for the next shot. Suffice to say, all of our competing couples are still married and/or friends. Forty-eight players came out to play. Awards were given for both Gross and Net scores. In the Gross competition, the winners were: 1st Place - The Mauterers, 2nd Place - The Blackwoods and in 3rd Place - The Beckers. When it came to the

Net Competition, the winners were: 1st Place - The Singers (undoubtedly aided by Pauline’s Chip-In), 2nd Place - The Garrigas, and in 3rd Place - The Fontenots. The game was followed by a buffet luncheon and much camaraderie and no lawyers were required.

After a very rainy weekend that left our courses “cart path only,” on Tuesday, May 14th, we opted to play all holes as par threes instead of our planned Trophy Day Competition. Only eleven brave ladies ventured out to play the front of our Pine Course. As previously stated, due to the wet conditions we played all the holes as Par Threes. This means everyone teed off from the 150 yard markers. Our First Flight winners (in a Scorecard Playoff) were: 1st Place - Therese Mauterer, 2nd Place - Judy Tauzin and in 3rd Place - Toni Rossol. Our Second Flight winners (also in a Scorecard Playoff) were: 1st Place - Janice Murray, 2nd Place - Brigitte Becker, and in 3rd Place - Patti Blackwood. Susie Fontenot had a Chip-In on Hole #6, and Therese Mauterer scored a Birdie on Hole #2. The following Tuesday, May 21, the game was Mixed Bag. Twenty-three gals came out to play the front of the Cardinal Course. This is a team

competition where each player plays their own ball and the Three Best scores are entered on Par 3 holes, the two best scores on Par 4 holes and only the best score is recorded on Par 5 holes. This weeks winners were: 1st Place the Team of Sue Hebert, Therese Mauterer, and Mary Murray. 2nd Place was taken by the Team of Dinah Knobloch, Ruth Holmes and Toni Rossol. Coming in at 3rd Place was the Team of Nancy Barker, Nancy Sislow and MaryAnn Stromeyer. In addition, Sue Hebert recorded a Birdie on Hole #7. Looks like Summer has come early to Diamondhead with the temperatures reaching 80 + degrees even in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 28th. However, we are not easily dissuaded, and 22 gals braved the warm temps to play a Scramble on the front nine of the Cardinal Course. As a reminder, this is a team competition with the teams being chosen by the ProShop staff. Each team member tees off, and the best drive is chosen. Then everyone plays their own ball. This event’s winners were: 1st Place (in a Scorecard Playoff) - Nanette Braud, Ruth Holmes and Margaret Sherwood. 2nd Place (also in a Scorecard Playoff) - Nancy Barker, Ruthie O’Neill and Kathie Pierson. 3rd Place (no

Playoff needed) - Sylvia Corban, Pauline Singer and Judy Tauzin. Margaret Sherwood had a ChipIn on Hole #5.

As attested by the several “Scorecard Playoffs”, our gals are pretty well matched and very competitive. Best part of playing this game is the person you compete with most is YOU! Until next month, keep your eye on the ball and hit them straight and long.

Tom and Sue Warren elected Boaters Royalty for 2025

Tom and Sue Warren, longtime members of the Diamondhead Boaters Association’s Krewe of Kamehameha, have been selected as King Akua Kai the 49th and Queen for the 2025 carnival season. Commodore Jim Miller made the announcement at the Boaters’ annual Summer Party on June 22 at the Club at Diamondhead.

The North Carolina natives were high school classmates who went on one date before their lives took different directions that led to their marriage in 2019. The Queen-elect has served on committees in multiple events in the past decade, most recently the 2024 Spring Party and the 2023 Coronation Ball. The King-elect is well

known for his popular statue of Colonel Sanders that watches over the backyard of their home on Golf Club Drive. Their court includes Lady in Waiting Sandy Hatem, Equerry Mickey Hatem; Maids and Dukes Teresa and Harold Manning and Brenda and Ralph Hays. Commodore Miller opened the festivities with a welcome to all and recognition of the current royalty, King Akua Kai the 48th Jerry Gillen and his wife

Queen Phil Gillen. Miller then introduced members in attendance of Alii, past royalty, that included 1995 Queen Terrie Downie, 2000 Queen Pam Marshall, 2002 King Lloyd Ramirez Sr. and Queen Audrey Ramirez, 2005 Queen Josette Grace, 2008 King Bob Gregoire and Queen Kitty Gregoire, 2009

A scrumptious feast pre-

pared by the Club dining staff featured a petite wedge salad, a grouper and shrimp entrée and refreshing key lime pie for dessert. The evening’s music was furnished by Johnny Fung, whose selections of popular dance music had the 125 attendees on their feet until the end.
