Way Spring has sprung. The Patio at the Club is again in full use, The turf is starting to waken from its winter slumber on our courses, and guests are arriving to enjoy our Diamondhead hospitality.

Brigitte and I recently played in a three-day event with the Midsouth Seniors Golf Association. Couples from Alabama to Texas came to Diamondhead and had good things to say about our community. They expressed praise for the food, staff and facilities they enjoyed while here. Some of them stayed at the newly remodeled Ramada Inn and gave it good marks. One gentleman I played golf with who lives in Craft Farms, a golf community in Gulf Shores told me he was going to do all he could to convince his wife to move to Diamondhead. They have two courses there, but he said our amenities were much better.

Speaking of food, you should plan a visit to the Club to experience the new menus Chris Rahaim and Chef Ricky have put together in Latitude 30, the Patio and Oak Room, if you haven’t done so by now. One of the new items, the Smash Burger has been a big hit already. A long-time member who tried one recently jokingly told me he may never eat a regular ham-

burger again!

For the younger set, the children’s Twin Lakes Fishing Rodeo for residents in good standing is set for Saturday April 27th at Twin Lakes. You should register the kids early since it will almost certainly limit out at 200 participants. Sign-in is at 8:30 and the fishing from 9-11 am. The first 100 get free lunch provided by The Waffle House. You can call (228) 255-1900 xt170 to register your children.

Summer Tennis Camps have now been scheduled for June 1013, June 24-27 and July 15-18. Time is 9-11:00 each day. Ages 6-12 are welcome. Bring your own lunch, snack and water. A pizza party takes place on the last day of camp. Tennis shoes are required. Call (228) 255-5030 for fees and registration or stop by the Tennis Club.

The Summer Kids Golf Camp is June 17-20 from 4-5:00 pm for ages 7 & older. Call (228) 2553910 for fees and registration or stop by the Golf Shop.

We are scheduled for an election cycle this June. All four officers and three new directors will be chosen by a vote of members in good standing to guide the Association forward.

When Brigitte and I lived in Nashville and Tampa (before moving back home to Diamondhead), she was so busy working

as an Insurance Executive she had little time for any other activities. Now she’s joined the DWGA and DWGAN golf groups, multiple card games, calls Bingo at the Club, and recently ran a close race (but lost) for the open

City Council seat. All while still serving on the Board of Directors for the Insurance Company she

Aysia Riley of Diamondhead recently served as a page for the Mississippi House of Representatives. Pages generally run errands for officials and House staff. Riley, 13, is the daughter of Jessica Roche, and she is in the seventh grade at Hancock Middle School. She was sponsored for the week by Representative Casey Eure (R – Saucier).

Troop 210G becomes Hancock’s first chartered BSA troop for girls

In a move that reflects the changing landscape of youth organizations, Diamondhead Scouts BSA Troop 210 is preparing to welcome its first chartered troop for girls, Troop 210G. Five girls joined the new troop during the March Arrow of Light crossing over ceremony from Diamondhead Pack 210 Cub Scouts, underscoring the interest and enthusiasm for this new initiative.

In 2019, national changes opened the Boy Scouts program to girls and rebranded it as Scouts BSA. With the addition of Troop 210G, both boys and girls in Diamondhead Scouts BSA troops will now have access to a gender-specific troop, where they can cultivate leadership skills, participate in community service projects, embark on camping trips, and work toward earning merit badges. Importantly, all young women in Scouts BSA have the chance to advance and earn the prestigious Eagle rank, demonstrating the organization’s commitment to fostering leadership and achievement among its members.

It’s important to note the distinction between Scouts BSA and Girl Scouts of the USA, as they are separate organizations with different aims and methods. Within Scouts

BSA, boys and girls are unified under the general title of “Scouts,” emphasizing a sense of unity and common purpose. The inclusion of girls in Scouts BSA offers them the opportunity to develop new skills and engage in traditional scouting activities. While understanding the importance of adaptability, local scouting leaders also acknowledge the challenges in transitioning to a co-ed scouting environment. Tim Willis, Scoutmaster for Troop 210B, mentioned the difficulties in finding charter organizations and adult leaders to support the newly formed troop. Motivated women leaders from neighboring troops, such as Pass Christian Scouts BSA Troop 316G and Picayune Scouts BSA Troop 5G, will be invaluable in guiding and assisting the newly chartered Troop 210G as it navigates this new chapter in scouting.

As Diamondhead Scouts BSA Troop 210 evolves to include all young people, it remains grounded in its commitment to timeless values and traditions, ensuring that scouting continues to serve as a cornerstone of character development for youth in the community. Troop 210B and Troop 210G are sponsored by the Diamondhead Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2880. Both troops meet every Tuesday at 6:30 PM at the Diamondhead Methodist Church.

Krewe of Diamondhead invites you to join in on the fun!

Thinking About Joining a Mardi Gras Krewe?

(Diamondhead, MS) – You have seen the articles in the paper and been to the parade, but do you really know what it’s like to be a part of the Krewe of Diamondhead?

Mardi Gras Krewes are only active during Mardi Gras season. Why would I want to join just for that?

The Krewe of Diamondhead has events, parties and fun ac-

tivities year-round. This gives our membership more chances to connect with each other. We recently had a golf cart poker run, which was limited to the first 50 people and sold out quick. Everybody had so much fun with this one, as they cruised around to different stops that each had a specialty drink and appetizers. Members and non-members got to visit and catch up with each other in a causal setting.

In April the Krewe will wrap up the theme for 2024 Mardi Gras with our Annual Theme

Party. This year it will be Abracadabra, A Night of Magic and Illusion. This is always a fun party with creative costumes.

There are even more events in the works including a possible visit to a Shuckers baseball game. The best part of all of these events is you only participate when it is convenient for you. The Board of Directors are constantly working to find fun activities to keep the good times rolling.

I don’t know anybody in the Krewe of Diamondhead.

Being a new member to the Krewe opens you up to meeting the rest of the membership. We are a friendly Krewe and we love our new members. Before you know it, you will have a lot of new acquaintance and friends. You might actually be surprised who are members.

It’s hard to join a Mardi Gras Krewe. Don’t you have to be sponsored by a member?

No sponsorship is needed. Membership in the Krewe of Diamondhead is open to all residents of the State of Mississippi,

21 years of age or older. Applications to join the Krewe open each year in June. Although the cost to join has changed over the years it is still very affordable. Individual membership cost is $65 and the cost for a couple or individual with guest is $125. We even have a Venmo account to make things super easy. So, when I pay a membership

what does that give me?

This gives you access to all the Krewe parties and gatherings. There are separate costs for tickets, but you only have to buy tickets to events you want to attend. Membership fees help us keep costs down for Krewe events. Parties, balls and events all have decorations, food, music, invitations, etc. There are costs associated with each function and those membership fees help make those fun and outstanding for everyone.

Ok I’m sold and want to be a member of the Krewe, how do I join?

To join the Krewe of Diamondhead contact our Membership Director, Gina Newman, regina.newman09@outlook.com. She will send you an application and answer any additional questions you may have. Don’t wait to contact us as applications will be coming out soon and you don’t want to miss a minute of the fun.

Just when February began to look like we were headed for Spring in the South, the end of the month reminded us that we still have some cool, rainy days ahead.

On Tuesday, February 6th, we did manage to get in our usual first Tuesday of the Month Tro-

phy Day with 23 of our members turning out to play at scheduled tee times. This happens occasionally when the Club has previously scheduled tournaments. Since we are alternating this format, this month Gross Scores were recorded on the Front of the Cardinal Course. The winners were: Flight One 1st Place = Therese Maureen, 2nd Place = Georgeann Lexicon and 3rd Place = Kathie Pierson. In Flight Two, 1st Place = Judy Brannan, 2nd Place = Nancy Sislow and 3rd Place = Susie Fontenot. In Flight Three, 1st Place = Shirley Halterman, 2nd Place = Janice Murray and 3d Place = Cathy Gesell. When it came to Lowest Putts, in Flight One, Georgeann Luxion won with only 16 putts.

The Flight Two winner in this category was Nancy Sislow with 17 putts, and Dinah Knobloch took the honors in Flight Three with only 16 putts. Dinah Knobloch had a Chip-In on Hole #9 while Brigitte Becker, Ruth Holmes and MaryAnn Stromeyer all scored Birdies on Hole #4. Well played gals especially since several holes were “cart path only” enabling us to get in a lot of extra walking.

Tuesday, February 13, had us bringing out our Mardi Gras attire to play a game called, Throw Out the 3 Highest Scores, which we were all delighted to do playing the Back Nine of the Cardinal Course. The First Flight required a “scorecard playoff” to determine that 1st Place went to Toni Rossol, 2nd Place to Judy Tauzin and 3rd Place to Therese Mauterer. The Second Flight winners were: Kim Knight in first place, Nancy Sislow in second place and Brigitte Becker in third place. When it came to Flight Three, Sylvia Corban garnered 1st Place, followed by Carole Griffin in 2nd Place and Pauline Singer in 3rd Place. During this competition we also gave awards for “Closest to the Pin on two holes: #13 and #17. Toni Rossol took this honor for the 1st Flight on #13, while Kim Knight in the 2nd Flight got it on #13. When it came to #17, Kathie Pierson was closest in the 1st Flight and Anne Payne in the 2nd Flight. But the special attention went to Kathy Jones in the 3rd Flight who won this award on both the #13th and the #17 holes. Way to go Kathy! Not to be left out, Sylvia Corban had

a Chip-in on #11.

February 20th, found us playing a two-person Best Ball game. Each player in the two-person team records her own score and the ProShop calculates the team with the best Net Score on each hole. The winning team, with a net score of 28 was made up of Judy Tauzin and Carol Wyrosdick. Second Place, with a net score of 29, went to Cathy Gesell and Monica Jordan. We needed to have a ScoreCard Playoff to determine which team took 3rd place and which took 4th place. Third Place was taken by Margaret Sherwood and Nancy Sislow while Fourth Place went to Sharon Gerchow and Therese Mauterer.

The weather was great on our last Tuesday of February when we played a Scramble on the front nine of the Cardinal. Twenty-seven members came out for this Gross Score competition. In yet another ScoreCard Playoff, the First Place Team was made up of Edith Baerson, Judy Lakota, Mary Murray and MaryAnn Stromeyer. Second Place position was taken by Sue Hebert, Ann Nutting, Ruthie O’Neill and Cheryl Saak. And Third

The Diamondhead Men’s Golf Association is open to all men

A rules situation came up in my group recently. A fellow competitor was obstructed by the bridge over the creek on number 10 Pine. My interpretation of the rules was that he got free relief due a man-made immovable obstruction on his intended line to the target. I was wrong. You are only allowed free relief from a TEMPORARY Immovable Obstruction. This bridge, as well as the pump house on Cardinal 15, are permanent immovable obstructions so you are not allowed free relief unless the obstruction impacts your swing or stance. You must play the ball within one club length and avoid the obstruction as best as you can. Thanks to Chris and Wayne in the pro shop for providing clarity on this rule.

The Our Lady Academy Crescents Tennis Team recently won their division championship at the McGill Toolen Tennis Invitational in Mobile, Ala.

OLA wins division title in Tennis Invitational

On Friday, March 8, the Tennis Team of Our Lady Academy traveled to Mobile, Alabama, to participate in the McGill Toolen Tennis Invitational. More than 40 teams from throughout the south participated in the event of girls’ single and doubles play. Each match counted as a point for the team championship.

Nine matches were played in each round with the winner moving on toward the championship bracket.

In the first round, OLA drew Spanish Fort and compiled an impressive win with a 6-3 victory. Weather hampered play on the afternoon matches, so the ladies came back on Saturday morning for the quarter-finals against Stone High. OLA had lost to Stone in Wiggins in their opening match of the season. The team was ready for revenge this time and knocked it out of the park with a 6-3 win.

On to the finals of the championship round against Trinity High from Mont-

gomery, Alabama. This team had completed a win over Ocean Springs earlier in the day (which had beaten OLA a couple of weeks before). The ladies were ready to meet the match head-to-head with the Trinity team and in the closing match, with the score dead-even at four matches-all, the team of Kaddie Farve and Sophia Chacon pulled out the win 8-6 to crown the OLA team the champion of the McGill Toolen Invitational D Division. Congratulations to Ambrie Alderman, Alyssa Kirkland, Natalia Mossy, Valentina Mossy, Sofia Chacon and Kaddie Farve on a great tournament.

Also, hats off to all their parents who “weathered the storm” and helped out with getting all players to and from the event. Let’s get ready to roll on to state tournaments, ladies. It’s right around the corner on April 22 in Oxford, which — the the ladies win again as they did lasat year, will be a 2-peat!

Congrats again, ladies — you rock!
