MAY 2024

Due to the deadline for submitting this article, I’m writing it on Masters’ weekend.

For me it has always been the unofficial start of the golf watching season.

In an interview on the Golf Channel the other night, Raymond Floyd a gifted golfer who is a past Masters Champion was asked why it was the favorite tournament for a lot of golfers and fans.

He aptly remarked “Because its always played on the same great golf course”. Reportedly the busiest time of the year for driving ranges including ours is probably the week after The Masters.

We are blessed to have received two quality courses from Purcell, which allows us to accommodate a good number of guests, while reserving availability for our own members to play at times convenient to their preferences. Dan Hamman, our Golf Superintendent and his staff have both courses in excellent condition and due to their efforts, I believe we are witnessing an influx of guest players.

It appears to me there are more visitors now then I saw in the late 80s when we were inundated with snowbirds from the Mid-West and North and we did not have any ca-

sino course competition.

The Club also continues to experience increased usage by members and guests enjoying both coordinated nightly in-door entertainment and a relaxed atmosphere on the patio. The food is good with menu options large enough for a variation of dishes during frequent visits. If you have not been in a while, please give the Club a visit. I know you’ll be pleased.

It’s also election season. As the deadline for candidate applications has expired, we already know who the officers will be since one person qualified for each of the four available offices. There are six candidates for Director positions. Normally we would elect three Directors during this election cycle, but since Bill Blackwood, a current Director with two years left on his term has qualified for treasurer, we will elect four directors.

The candidate receiving the fourth highest votes assumes Bill’s two-year remaining term. The candidates with the three highest vote totals will serve as four-year Directors, i.e. the normal term. The bios for the candidates can be found elsewhere in this issue.

Pools open May 1st. East Rec will be open from 6:00 am – 8:00 pm and the other pools open 8:00 am – 8:00 pm. An updated mem-

bership card showing membership in good standing is required for pool use, so if you have not updated your membership card for 2024, please stop by the Concierge desk at the Club for assistance. Your immediate family including

children and grandchildren are welcome guests. Also, our Rental residents should contact the POA office to determine requirements and ability for pool usage for their families.

Thanks for Reading

Meeting room returns to East Hancock Library

April showers bring May flowers, and this year it has also brought the return of our meeting room! All of the activities that took place there are back on, plus a little extra! Let’s start off with a couple of reminders and then we’ll dive right in.

Reminders:

Storytime for pre-schoolers held at 10:30 on Mondays, will end on May 6th for the summer.

Acrylic Painting for Kids is taking a break until summer. Watch this space for the date of its return.

Did you know that you can drop off eye glasses at the library that you no longer use? Think about it next time your prescription changes. The Lion’s Club gets these glasses to people in need who will really appreciate your thoughtfulness!

Did you also know that you can drop off donations as well as Claiborne Hill grocery receipts for the Hancock County Animal Shelter at the library? Donations such as food, towels, and blankets are well used, and a percentage of the total of the receipts goes to the shelter in the form of cash.

What’s new this month: Discover Linedancing! On Wednesday, May 15 at 10:00 join us for an introductory class. No special clothes or shoes needed, and no pressure! This is a learner friendly environment, so come check it out.

What’s coming back or continuing this month:

Acrylic Painting for Adults is from 1-2 on the first and third Mondays of the month. Elin provides the instruction and all materials are furnished by the library.

Make and Take, where all materials and instructions for a craft are provided, takes place on the second and fourth Mondays from 2-3. Leandra leads the way!

Literary Society of Diamondhead, our local book club, meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 10:30. Come join us even if you haven’t read the current book. You’ll see the group interaction and meet some new people.

Conversational Spanish meets from 1-2 on Thursdays. A basic knowledge of Spanish is ideal for this class, which aims to improve fluency.

Sit and Be Fit is back in the meet-

ing room. If you’ve been slacking off on fitness, no more excuses! We hope to see you every Friday at 10:30.

Crafts and Conversation meets at 12:30 every Friday. Everyone brings their current crafting or sewing project to work on while they visit. Do you have something you need to finish?

What”s coming up:

The Summer Library Program starts in June! The theme is Adventure Begins at Your Library. Each

year HCLS holds a Summer Library Program that runs from June to July. Participants of all ages are encouraged to join our reading challenge and make reading a daily habit! We offer a variety of in-person, virtual, and take-home activities to encourage learning and enrich the summer months. There will be much more information on this next month.

In the meantime, see you at the library!

Whew! The stormy April weather pre-

sented some challenges which affected our plans, but didn’t keep us away from the trails… no-siree! We still got out to hike the Fountainebleau Trail in Ocean Springs and delighted in the early-blooming wildflowers and the bright green leaves on the rejuvenating trees. We also did a week-long exploration of the Tishomingo area in north Mississippi. Before March turned to April, we also enjoyed the “ups and downs” of the Tuxachanie trail in the Desoto National Forest where we identified baby pine trees, white violets, Carolina jasmine, and flowering lily pads along with several bird songs. There

was also a stroll through Bayou Gardens, the estate of former Louisiana Governor Richard Pk. Leche and his wife, Elton. Of course, we also had some mighty tasty lunches at Hiking Club-approved eateries And, we also have a full calendar for May. Our May hikes include: Saturday, May 4--Fountainebleau Trail, Ocean Springs. This hike is FREE and is always held on the first Saturday of the month. This interesting & informative hike meanders through about 2 miles of trails under the forest canopy, along Davis Bayou and through the savanna and is led by an expert naturalist sponsored by the Jackson County Recreation Department, Mississippi Sandhill Crane Wildlife Refuge, and the Audubon Society. We’ll have lunch after the hike somewhere nearby. Meet at Twin Lakes a bit before 8:00am. Leave at 8:00am. Hike starts in Ocean Springs at 9:00am. Krewe of Olympus celebrates its Greek Spring Soiree!

Olympus ushered in Spring with a Grecian inspired party on March 23rd. The togaesque décor was the vision of Maggie Craig, Leanne Guidry and Eva Amos. Columns, tables flowered wreaths and backdrops of Greece filled The Club at Diamondhead’s Emerald Ballroom giving toga-clad guests a festive atmosphere. Hawes Amos, Olympus board member, started the event off with a few words before partygoers hit the dance floor!

Adding jubilee to the soiree, Krewe members and invitees enjoyed the music and voice of local DJ, Ronnie Hammons, while The Club served a delicious Greek buffet. Among the distinguished guests were the reigning Royalty of the Krewe of Olympus, including Queen Hera XVI, Kathy Simmons Cobb, accompanied by her

court Apollo, Jamie Kingston, and Aphrodite, Alison Kingston, looking fabulous in their togas. Looking ahead, the Krewes’ next event is the General Mem-

bership meeting scheduled for June 18th followed by the very popular summer party in July. As the call for toga attire echoes, the spirit of Olympus thrives.

The golf courses are in beautiful condition thanks to our golf course maintenance team! Many are saying we are the best in the area. Why play golf or live anywhere else? Diamondhead has it all. Now is a perfect time to get out and play some golf on our two championship golf courses.

We know it is tempting to walk on the golf cart paths/trails during this nice weather. All should obey the posted signage at all entry points prohibiting any activity on the golf course, golf cart paths, and golf cart trails other than golf. This is ultimately for your safety and so that those members and guests paying to play golf can do so without concern of hurting someone with

an errant golf shot someone who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. With many newcomers to the area and some not so new that do not know golf, it is important that we share this information. On the same note, Diamondhead members have access to several walking trails that were designed specifically for that purpose. Feel free to ask our staff in the Golf Shop or call (228) 255-3910 if you have any questions.

The Ladies’ Malahini was held in April. This is a great event for our lady golfers and to showcase our facilities. We look forward to announcing the results in next month’s article.

The Men’s Malahini, our premier golf events, is The Club at Diamondhead’s Member-Guest and it will be held May 17-19.

You may still have time to get your team registered. The Malahini is a major event for The Club at Diamondhead, and it’s one of our favorite events of the year.

We hosted the Big Kahuna Golf Challenge on April 5-7. 84 players registered to play in this 2-day, 36-hole, individual stroke play championship. BY shiRlEY hAlTERmAn

Well, Spring has definitely arrived on the Gulf Coast. And, has brought with it showers to water the beautiful azaleas but also to interfere with our golf schedule. This could turn out to be a very short article as the month had only four Tuesdays and the first and last Tuesday games had to be cancelled. Bummer! However, things are looking up and we plan to get in as much golf as possible during April. Cross your fingers!

We had hoped to play our Founders Tournament on the first Tuesday of March but Mother Nature had other ideas, depositing cold weather and rain so this competition was rescheduled for March 19th. As everyone was anxious to get back on the course, we had a great turnout of 32 members for our Even Holes competition on the Front Nine of the Pine Course. This event means that only the scores on the even number holes are counted toward

your final score. First Flight Winners were: 1st Place = Therese Mauterer, 2nd Place (in a scorecard playoff) went to Judy Tauzin and in yet another scorecard playoff, 3rd Place was taken by Ruth Holmes. Judy Lakota handily took 1st Place in the Second Flight, while Tracey Garriga came in 2nd Place followed by Toni Rossol in yet another Scorecard Playoff. In the Third Flight, Margaret Sherwood came in First with Cathy Gesell in Second place and Shirley Halterman in Third place (and yes, it was another Scorecard Playoff.). Not to be left out, Nancy Barker grabbed 1st Place in the Fourth Flight , followed by Janice Murray in 2nd Place and Ruthie O’Neill in 3rd Place. And dare I say it, another Scorecard Playoff! I guess that is what happens when we get enough gals out for four flights and competition is close. We recorded two Chip-Ins during the round. Janice Murray had one on Hole #8, and Pat VanDervort scored hers on Hole #7. By the way, Scorecard Playoffs are done by comparing the last 6 hole scores.

We actually did manage to play our Founders Tournament on the Back Nine of the Pine Course on Tuesday, March 19th. We were only able to field three flights for this event as several gals originally signed up were not able to play. Twenty-one gals competed. First Place awards were given in each of the flights and their names will be placed on the Founder’s Trophy at the Club. First Flight winners were: 1st Place —Tracey Garriga, 2nd Place — Ruth Holmes and 3rd Place — Brigitte Becker. Second Flight produced the following winners: 1st Place — MaryAnn Stromeyer, 2nd Place — Susie Fontenot and 3rd Place — Toni Rossol. In the Third Flight the following gals scored 1st Place — Sharon Gerchow, 2nd Place — Ruthie O’Neill and 3rd Place — Margaret Sherwood. We have to note that both the First and Second Flight also had to be determined by scorecard playoffs. When it came to lowest Putts, Tracey Garriga won in the First Flight with only 17 putts, MaryAnn Stromeyer had only 12 Putts to take the honors in the Second Flight and Nancy Barker scored only 19 Putts to take the Third Flight honors. Durning this competition we also give awards not only for lowest Putts but also for Closest-to-the Pin. The First Flight winner in this area was Tracey Garriga, Second Flight was Toni Rossol and Third Flight was Ruthie O’Neill.

While we had looked forward to playing a Scramble on the final Tuesday of the

Month, once again the weather had other ideas, and our game had to be cancelled due to substantial rains both the night before and the morning of our planned round.

So, until next month, as we pray for more cooperative weather, the gals of the Nines hope that by the time you read this you will have had a most Blessed Easter!
