President’s Report
For JANUARY 2023
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rate of inflation between 2018 and mid-December 2022, which averaged 4.3% per year has resulted in a cumulative price increase of 18.62%. That means that today’s prices are 1.19 times higher than average prices in 2018.
I mention that because POA annual dues have not increased since 2018 and POA dues are NOT being increased for 2023 either. If you pay your annual dues of $646 in full before the end of January 2023, you will receive a $40 credit on your account resulting in a net payment of $606. If you divide $606 by 365 days per year, your annual cost is about $1.67 per day. If you pay your annual dues on a monthly basis, $646 per year divided by 365 equals about $1.77 per day. Both of these examples are great deals for all the amenities we have here, especially since the Hancock County Assessor publically says that our amenities have a positive effect on our property values.
The Gulf States Professional Golf Association
(PGA) recently held its annual meeting in the Club, including their Section’s Annual Awards Dinner.
Even if you’re not personally interested in golf, this is the first time that this group of over 140 PGA teaching professionals have ever held their meeting in DH. They actually played a round of golf here and were impressed by the courses and the friendliness of the staff. Most of the attendees had never been here and were surprised and impressed by everything that DH has to offer. This is actually “a feather in DH’s cap” since these individuals often make recommendations of locations for their members to go and play.
As you probably know, the POA is implementing one computer system to handle ALL of the activities handled by the POA. The old system was composed of five different programs which could not “talk” to each other.
According to computer
experts, the transition never works perfectly and takes awhile to make everything work seamlessly. We were not immune to that either. At the deadline for this article, we’re experiencing software issues in the food and beverage area, while the remainder of the program is working as expected. The food & beverage section is being worked on daily and hopefully, by the time you read this, all modifications will have been completed.
Although the East Hancock County Library is not directly associated with the POA, you may be interested in the following services that are provided.
They have a large and small 3-D printer, a Glow Forge (device that uses a laser to imprint on glass, plastic, leather, etc.) and a very large printer. Basically, you pay for the materials used and the library staff will run the machines. If you have any interest in any of this equipment, I suggest that you investigate these services.
The “social season” in DH has started which means that Club facilities are being used almost on a daily basis. This continues thru Mardi Gras which is on February 21, 2023. This generates a great deal of income for the POA.
It’s now 2023. I wonder
how many people reading this remember reading George Orwell’s book, 1984, written about 70 years ago. The topic was a vision of a government that will do anything to control the narrative of the
citizens. Might be an interesting topic for one of our book clubs.
HAPPY NEW YEAR.... hope to see you using one of our amenities in the near future!

S.P.C.A. of Diamondhead New Year’s Resolutions
By toni GrEy
Just like most people, the S.P.C.A. makes New Year’s Resolutions, too. A few of the most important ones for us are as follows.
1) The S.P.C.A. of Diamondhead resolves to help as many injured, abandoned, and lost dogs in Diamondhead as possible. For example: On November 26, a good Samaritan found a pitiful chihuahua that was toothless, skin and bones who obviously had been abandoned (see photo). Nanette Griffin, our Board member, intervened and initiated a voucher. A resident drove the Chihuahua to Gulf Coast Veterinary Emergency Hospital in Woolmarket. We weren’t sure she could be saved.
I checked on her later that afternoon and found that the staff, which I refer to as Angels, had bathed her, clipped her nails, fed her pate’, wrapped her in a baby blanket and placed her protected on the front desk safe and sound. She was napping when I saw her. She had already stolen everyone’s heart. They named her Granny. Fast forward two weeks later (see photo) and she is much improved. Misty Strickland of Animal A.I.D. of Mississippi in Pass Christian found a hospice home for her in Escatawpa. As you can see, many people on the Coast pulled together to save this poor little dog.
2) We resolve to rescue, spay/neuter and vaccinate many more cats in
A rescued chihuahua.
Diamondhead. When found, the tame cats and kittens will go to Petsense for adoption. In just three months, we have had over 20 adoptions...providing good homes for cats who may have been on the street or worse.
3) We resolve to encourage Diamondhead residents to refrain from trapping raccoons and instead educate them of alternate procedures

Started at visitor center and watched a cool film about Gulf Islands National Seashore. Checked out the displays and listened to the ranger warning us not to feed the wildlife (yeah, the alligators...) Then proceeded to enjoy the nice trails in the bayou and check out the old CCC work camp foundations. Fantastic meal at the Rib Crib followed. Good friends, great fun and many laughs.”
And, the mid-December weather was fabulous, causing many of us to venture out. Obie got to Grand Isle (we’re jealous…) and Debra and Robert reported out from the Wolf River Preserve (that mushroom is not real, is it?)
Lookin’ forward, we’ve got a couple of January hikes planned:

• Thursday, January 26, 2023, we’ll follow leader, Debra Martin, as we stroll along the “cushie” trail at the War Memorial Park in Pass Christian. Meet up a bit before 10:00am at Twin Lakes. Lunch somewhere yummy and nearby.
And let’s hike through the WWII Museum in New Orleans on February 1, 2023. Details will be shared at our January 2023, planning meeting. History buffs welcome!
Further into the new year: March 23, we’ll do an overnight tour of Avery Island and the surrounding area, arriving in time for lunch at Riverside Inn, in Broussard, La. After lunch we will take advantage of two self-guided tours: Jungle Garden & Tabasco Museum/Factory and maybe have a Tabasco Bloody Mary at the end of the tours.

Krewe of Diamondhead 48th Annual Coronation Ball
The Krewe of Diamondhead held its Coronation Ball for the Mardi Gras year 2023 with the theme of the James Bond 007. Master of ceremonies, John Kirschenbaum, entered to the song “The Man with the Golden Gun Lulu” and opened the celebration with a brief history of the Krewe.
The visiting royalty from the Krewe of Selene, Queen Sarah Shafer-Parrington and King Kevin Parrington were recognized. Board members from the Krewe of Diamondhead were then recognized and thanked for their diligence ensuring that the Krewe of Diamondhead has the finest events and functions of any on the coast.
Kirschenbaum then introduced the Captain for the Krewe of Diamondhead, Ricky Sheppard who entered to the theme song, “The Living Daylights,” by A-ha. Once he took his place in front of the stage, it was time to introduce the reigning court.
The 2022 court entered the ballroom to their theme Around the World and the song “Dancing in the Streets,” by the Mick Jagger and David Bowie. The court included Duke Doug Maxwell, Maid Betty Maxwell, Maid Stephanie Jensen, escorted by 2019 HRH Ron Rhoades, Duke Sid Mizell and Maid Mary Mizell.
The “Herald Calls” signaled the entrance of royalty. Ali’I Ho Nua the 47th Joseph Doyle and his Queen, Cheryl Doyle entered the ballroom to “If Ever I Cease to Love” and paid one last tribute to
their loyal subjects. They took their places on the stage and the MC announced the retirement of the royal scepters. The royal guard of past kings, 2013 HRH Mickey Hatem and 2020 HRH, Scott McNamee received the scepters and King Joe and Queen Cheryl took their seats.
The MC thanked the 2022 court for their outstanding Mardi Gras season before they adjourned to their seats to the song “Around the World” by ELO.
The fanfare signaled and everyone turned their attention to the back of the ballroom where the doors opened once again for the new court. As the Royal Court for 2023 were formally announced, they entered the ballroom to the song “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service/ A View to A Kill” instrumental and each took their place on stage as
they awaited the arrival of the King and Queen elect. The Royal Court for 2023 are Duke David Ciolino and Maid June, Duke Craig Harvey and Maid Lalet Harvey, Duke Darryl Davis and Maid Judy Davis, Duke Randy Rogers and Maid Marci Rogers.
The “Herald Call” once again alerted the audience to the pending presentation of royalty. Queen elect, Suzy Smith entered the ballroom proudly escorted by her mother 1996 HRH Alice Burkhardt. This makes Suzy a legacy queen, making her only the second legacy queen in our krewe’s history. Suzy wore a Tiffany Design gold lace dress adorned with rhinestones. Her hair and makeup was styled by Sally Lerille. She then took her place on the stage and all turned with excited anticipation for the arrival of the King elect.
The fanfare again sounded and all eyes were on the back on the ballroom as King elect Hoppy Smith was announced and entered to the traditional song “If I ever Cease to Love.” The King elect wore a traditional black tuxedo. The crowns and scepters for the King and Queen elect are gold and rhinestones designed by Dynasty Collection of Mobile, Alabama.

A brand new year ahead for Diamondhead Golf
By c hris altEsE, PGa DirEctor oF GolF
Happy New Year from all of us in Golf Operations at The Club at Diamondhead! We are looking forward to another fun year of golf. 2023 promises to be another great year of golf at The Club at Diamondhead.
Let’s all support OUR club and make this year one of the best! We hope that all of our residents and annual golf members will participate in some of the many golf activities planned this year. Even if you don’t play golf you might know someone who does…please tell them all to come play our Diamondhead golf courses.
As part of the efforts to maintain and properly utilize the World Handicap System/GHIN at The Club at Diamondhead for our members, we will be implementing a new eligibility requirement in 2023 to play in club events that are based on net scores or pre-flighted based on handicap/handicap index. The new eligibility requirement to play will read as follows:
Must have a current WHS/ GHIN handicap index and must have a minimum of ten (10) 18-hole scores, or equivalent, posted within 90 days of the event start date at the time of turning in your registration form and payment.
Also, in order to give the tournament and handicap committees sufficient time to administer the new eligibility requirement along with other event details, all
club events will have an entry deadline of no less than 5 days prior to the event date. The entry deadlines posted for each event will be strictly adhered to and no flexibility will be given. Fully completed entry forms along with full payment must be received before the entry deadline in order to participate in a club event. We held one of our really fun golf events since our last article… The Gobbler on November 26th. This was our 11th annual edition of this event. Thank you to all of the golfers that supported these events as well as all of our golf events this past year. More importantly, this group donated over 325 lbs of canned goods to the Hancock County Food Pantry as part of their entry fee. Congratulations to our winners…

The Mississippi Golf Association and the Gulf States PGA are both slated to host events this year at The Club at Diamondhead. Unfortunately, the PGA Tour Champions changed their schedule and decided to not host an
event in our area in 2023. We enjoyed hosting the PGA Tour Champions Rapiscan Systems Classic qualfiers in late March the past several years. Thanks to our residents and members for helping us make The Club at Diamondhead such a great place to host the top golf events in the area. It is because of this community support that the PGA Tour, our national and state golf association, along with the Gulf States PGA keep us in mind for hosting events each year.
Our Diamondhead junior golfers continue to impress. We continue to be amazed by their incredible accomplishments. Congratulations to Jack Lawson and Karstyn Altese on their victories in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Fall Series event at The Club at Diamondhead. Jack Lawson shot -1 under (71) on the Pine to take the title in the Overall Boys Division. Karstyn Altese battled it out with several talented young ladies to take the Overall Girls Division title. Rowdy Foster, age 11, opted to compete in the Boys Age 13-15 group from the white tees and shot two impressive rounds of 88-86. These kids are good. We are extremely proud of our junior golfers and how they continue to represent our club!
Join our annual golf membership and play more golf! When you consider the benefits, our annual golf memberships are second to none in our region. Full-service, award-winning golf shop. State-of-the-art Golf Academy at Diamondhead. World
class practice facilities. Full-service grill and bar. Friendly and helpful golf professionals and staff. And the list goes on. Play at The Club at Diamondhead and be treated like a member for the day or join and be a member for the year.

As always, let us know how we can help.

The weather has actually been kind to us this year. No bad hurricanes impacted our coast this season. Yea! While rain did interrupt a game or two, the weather was mostly cooperative.
On the first Tuesday in November we played the front nine holes of the Pine course. The game was “Par 3s”. To explain, that means that every hole was played as a par 3. On normal par 4 or 5 holes, everyone played from the 150 yard marker making the hole a Par Three. You would think that would make the course easy but not necessarily so. Twenty-eight gals turned out to play this game. If you scored a par on each hole, you should have had a score of 27 for the nine holes. Because we had 27 gals playing we were

Loneliness And Social Isolation Among Seniors & Diamondhead’s Village to Village Senior Center
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine 2020 report Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults: Opportunities for the Health Care System states there is growing evidence the group hurt the most from loneliness and social isolation are our seniors. In our earlier working life, most of us had a place to go to and something to do daily. All that changes for many of us after retirement as we find ourselves with few places to go and even less to do. Many seniors stay home and fall victim to social isolation as each year see the deaths of more close friends and relatives. The growing number of seniors who are isolated and lonely is seen by some as a major health problem.
Next to the air we breathe, water we drink, and the food we eat is our critical need for positive relationships with
people. These activities enrich our life by increasing our supportive relationships in which we feel loved and accepted. As we age and retire, we find ourselves staying home and overwhelmed with boredom as our social relationships diminish. As we age, we lose close friends and relatives, and for many of us our children move far away, the net result is we can find ourselves with no place to go and nothing to do.
The good news is there is something we can do to rid ourselves of loneliness and social isolation by having a place to go to and something to do. For a growing number of communities that place is a senior center and the something to do is interacting with other seniors by engaging in educational, and recreational social interactions.
Led by Mayor Nancy Depreo, a committee has been
formed to establish a Village-to-Village program including a Senior Center in Diamondhead. We will begin our pilot program in January 2023 and continue the study until the end of June 2023. The purpose of the Pilot Program is to listen and respond to the needs and concerns of seniors living in Diamondhead. Any resident over 60 years can participate and enjoy Art and crafts such as ceramics and stained glass, painting, and playing cards, shooting pool, and seminars. During the pilot program, we will also identify and collect village partners to establish a hub of resources to provide services for seniors.
Come out and meet your neighbors and learn new skills as you make new friends.
Stay Tuned.
The Krewe then enjoyed a royal meal prepared by the Diamondhead Country Club. Dancing and merriment continued through the evening as the Band of Brothers from Slidell, Louisiana entertained all who attended.
The Krewe of Diamondhead will hold their annual Mardi Gras ball on February 11, 2023, with the full 007 theme. This will be followed by their annual parade that will take place, Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023. For more, please contact Parade Director, Sandy McGraw at kdhparade@gmail.com or (719) 439-0269.
