“Never in recent history have we experienced forces of disruption like the restaurant industry is seeing today. Inflation is currently the most significant financial challenge; however, availability of labor, the rising cost of labor and supply chain inadequacies are all still a constant presence in the operational landscape. Over the past year, we saw sales come back to 2019 levels or greater, yet even with aggressive

To be perfectly blunt, members in good standing should not be subsidizing people who are not in good standing. Anytime something new is started, there are usually some technical problems, so bear with us as this change is implemented.Somepeople have asked what happened to the previous tenants of The Lazy Gator. The tenants told us they wanted to go back to the two restaurants that they operated in the Bahamas. The new tenants own and operate two long-time restaurants in Starkville, MS. and were interested in bringing their brand to the MS Gulf Coast. The new owners have bought a home near Diamondhead. The POA owns the parcel of land where The Lazy Gator is located plus the building and most of its contents. You might remember that before Katrina, the POA operated a restaurant in that location. It was completely destroyed in that storm and then re-built.Thefollowing is a quote from a CEO about his business, but it has implications for The Club at Diamondhead also:

Unfortunately, we have some people who sometimes refuse to show their ID card, hassle the server or are not a member in good standing, but still want to receive the discount. Some customers will say “You know me” and demand the discount. We do have many members who pay dues by the month and some stop paying at some point. The new system requires the server to check to see if the person is in good standing. If you’re in good standing, the system will automatically subtract the discount. The server cannot override the system.

T he deadline for this article was August 10th, so this provides an update as of that date. Please get in the habit of automatically showing your ID card whenever you purchase something in the club, golf, or tennis shop, etc. if you want to receive your 15% discount. By the time you read this, this procedure should be fully implemented.

2. On the issue of “expulsion” being the only remedy for non-payment of dues, the judgment states: “While this may be true, a party may contract to further obligate themselves under a property owner’s association”. In other words, once the association adopted its by-laws providing for the payment of dues, and granting the POA the ability to collect dues, assert liens, etc., the members further obligated themselves and granted additional powers to the POA which are enforceable.

3. On the issue of whether Diamondhead “abandoned” the property when the State of Mississippi obtained ownership, the judgment states: “Diamondhead could not abandon property it did not own”.4.On the issue of covenant “expiration”, the judgment states: “While it is true that the restrictive covenants of the Diamondhead subdivision have expired, it is clear and unambiguous from the actions of the majority of property owners that the members of the POA wish the covenants to beTherenewed.POAbenefits all members’ properties”. The judgment further states “Simply waiting for the covenants to expire and a few property owners trying to withdraw their membership does not overcome the intent of the creators of the POA or the majority of its members. Therefore, Diamondhead’s request for relief is GRANTED.”TheClubat Diamondhead recently hosted the Annual Southern Junior Cup Matches.Thiswas a Ryder Cup style event with 6 boys and 6 girls selected from their state golf association. A judgment favorable to the POA was recently reached in Hancock County Court on multiple issues, including covenant expiration. This was an appeal by the POA from a dismissal in Justice Court. The judgment addressed the following issues:1.On the issue of properties purchased through a tax patent from the State of Mississippi, the judgment states: “The Patent Process does relieve (purchaser) of any taxes and fees that may have attached to the property in advance of the State’s acquisition, it does not relieve (purchaser) thereafter of any liability for taxes or other obligations, including any covenants that run with the land such as Diamondhead’s dues”.

Recently, communityDiamondheadpullstogether.someneighbors were hearing a cat meowing and couldn’t figure out where it was coming from until someone spotted “Henry” in a tree. The residents who fed him on a regular basis realized he was about 30 feet up the tree, but eventually as people/neighbors were trying to help, he climbed even higher.Kelli Martone made a few posts on Facebook reaching out for help with the situation. People were saying, “call the fire department”, but apparently, they do not assist in these cases.

I suggested contacting Stump N Grind, a tree service, in the Kiln as they have excellent equipment and have done quite a bit of work here in Diamondhead. truck was equipped with a bucket that reaches as high as 85 ft! Well, it was a good thing because Henry was up to 65 feet. Poor little guy was in that tree for 3 days through lots of rain, heat and no food. We worried for the worse outcome if it hadn’t been for Vanessa and Mike from Stump N Grind Tree Service coming to the rescue!Turns out that Henry is a TNR cat (trapped, neutered, and returned to the community). He frequented the area and most of the neighbors knew of him. No one knows what scared him into climbing that tree. Thankfully he is safe and fed without any repercussions!! Louis and Olga were the main caretakers of this stray and were very worried of course! Thank goodness for a happy ending and the pouring out of compassion the neighbors and community gave to this situation. Special thanks to Stump N Grind Tree Service (228) 547-3861. Thursday, October 13th - Bang for the Buck Wines, 7:00 P.M. at the Club Most of us can't afford a $40 bottle of wine every day. Consequently, we're always looking for the affordable, but excellent wines to meet our everyday thirst. Sometimes, you may find a Two Buck Chuck that's pretty decent. That doesn't happen often but we're going to try and find some wines we think drink well above their price point and compare them to similar wines at higher price points. We'll see how many can identify which of the paired wines is which! Cost is $40 for DWC members and $50 for guests. Please make your reservations by mailing you check payable to DWC to: P.O. Box 6523,Diamondhead, MS 39525 or by emailing Lou at louertel@aol.com or Marshall at mekygs@mail.com.

Thursday, November 17th - Blends versus Varietals - 7:00 P.M. at the Club For a long time, American vintners seemed to produce mostly varietal wines, e.g. Cabernet, Chardonnay, etc. In recent years, blends have become much more popular. We're going to try some blends and, hopefully, compare them with a varietal from the same AVA and/or winery. We hope to understand the differences and similarities between the two. Something different!

By Gene deMedicis THE DMGA CONTINUES TO ADD NEW MEMBERS TO ITS RANKS AND THE COMPETITION GETS STRONGER WITH EACH NEW MEMBER.

Well, the month of July did not start off very well. Our first opportunity to play golf after the Fourth of July Holiday weekend sadly was cancelled as Mother Nature had other plans, and it rained that day. We had much better luck the following Tuesday and were actually able to get in our game called “Even Holes”. While our usual format is a Shotgun start with a group teeing off on each hole so we can all finish at the same and join each other for lunch in the clubhouse, on this day we had designated tee times due to another event scheduled at the Club. We played the front nine of the Pines Course only counting the scores we got on the even numbered holes (2, 4, 6 & 8). The following gals did well on those holes: Flight 1 - First Place went to Judy Tauzin and Second Place was taken by Toni Rossol. In Flight 2 - First Place was awarded to Janice Murray while Second Place went to Kim Knight. In Flight 3Pauline Singer took First Place and Carole Griffin took Second Place. On Tuesday, July 19th, the game was Count Ts & Ss. Seventeen of our ladies came out to play the front nine holes of the Cardinal Course. Scores were counted only on hole numbers that started with either a T or an S. Therefore, you tried to get your best scores on Holes two, three, six and seven. Of course, that is easier said than done. This event winners were: (in a By Shirley Halterman TO

DWGA Cha, Cha, Cha winning team: Rita Durham, Joanne Fried, Margie James, Bet Bowen.

Cassandra Godbold and Margie Pittman. Closest to the pin was Cassandra Godbold on hole #4, Margie James on hole #7, Joyce Teerling on hole #13 and Liz Bell on hole #17.

July 28th we played a team game of Cha, Cha, Cha on the Cardinal course. The first place team was Bet Bowen, Margie James, Rita Durham and Joanne Fried. The second place team was Jodi Crosby, Dianne Ackerman, Lottie Williams and JJ Skinner. Chip Ins were had by Margie James and Joyce Teerling. Birdies were had by Jeanne Hudgins, Carol Kirschenbaum, Rita Durham and Margie James had two. Closest to the pin were Carol Kirschenbaum on hole #4, Bet Bowen on hole #7, Margie James on hole #13 and Liz Bell on hole # 17.

First Place = Janice Murray and Second Place = Cathy Gesell. In the Third Flight Sylvia Coban took First Place while Dolores Louvier grabbed Second Place.

Shirley Halterman and Kathy Jones managed to get Chip-Ins on Hole #9 and Nancy Sislow scored a Birdie on Hole #4 (neither of which holes started with either a T or an S.). But, then that is the frustrating game of golf. The final Tuesday of July saw us playing Modified Texas Scramble. Unlike a regular Scramble where everyone plays from the best ball position, in this format each team member tees off, then the best shot is chosen and whomever made that shot does not play the next shot. On the following shot the same procedure is used until the hole is completed. Our winning teams during this format were: First Place Team with a Low Net Score of 20 = Cathy Gesell, Kim Knight, Therese Mauterer and Mary Mizell. Second Place Team with a Low Net Score of 24 = Jerry Ingraham, Dinah Knobloch, Janice Murray and Judy Tauzin. And the Third Place Team with a Low Net Score of 25 in a scorecard playoff = Marilyn Galus, Sue Hebert, Gale Lammers, and Margaret Sherwood.Welook forward to August bringing us fair skies and cooler weather (Ha! Clear skies probably, but it’s a Fat Chance we will see cooler weather.). So, until next month, keep swinging those clubs and following that little ball down the fairway into the hole.

July was a crazy month. I was in Orlando for a new job. New aircraft, intense training and all packed into a six-week schedule. While I was trying to remember aircraft limitations, required procedures, company policies and mentally trying to dump my last aircraft (and missing an article deadline), I was also envying those who were able to attend this year’s AirVenture the last week of July in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This Mecca of aviation activity and history has been on my bucket list since before I started flying back in 1989.Thisyear’s schedule was packed with well-known performers like Patty Wagstaff in her Extra and Jim Pietz in his aerobatic F33C Bonanza. What a great time that must be. Maybe next year I’ll finally make it there. The EAA does a fantastic job of promoting aviation with programs like Young Eagles and many workshops on construction techniques. This year’s event celebrates thirty years of Young Eagles flights. The Young Eagles program has introduced thousands of young people to aviation over the years. Each June on the second Saturday of the month, EAA holds International Young Eagles Day. This year, on June 11th more than one hundred Young Eagles rallies were held, flying over three thousand Young Eagles.Over the thirty years the Young Eagles program has been operating, more than 2.2 million kids between eight and seventeen have participated. Over fortyfour thousand pilots have donated their time and aircraft so these flights could be made. If you’d like to participate in future events, contact the EAA or email me and I can help you get in touch with our local chapter. We really could have used a couple more pilots and planes for our last event.

Most people are familiar with the iconic RV kit-built low-wing aircraft produced by Van’s Aircraft in Oregon. Van’s has gone in a new direction, introducing their new HIGH wing RV-15. They say it’s aimed at the STOL market but looks like more of an attack on the Kitfox market with a high lift wing, tandem seating and conventional gear design. They flew their test bed aircraft to Oshkosh and reported strong interest in theWithdesign.astabilator on the tail, it will be interesting to see how it compares to other STOL designs. Cessna struggled with a stabilator in the C177 Cardinal, with later models including slots to improve airflow. Does the RV-15 really need that much pitch authority? Only time, flight testing and accumulated flight time will tell.

AAAAAAAA Have you ever looked up at an airplane in the sky and dreamed of flying it yourself? Many people throughout history have done just that. Some pursued that dream, some didn’t or couldn’t.Likethey say, “life is what happens when you’ve made other plans.” But, WHAT IF? WHAT IF you could learn to fly an airplane yourself? I dreamed of that for several years, looking up at every airplane in the sky. I eventually achieved my goal of becoming a pilot. MY dream came true. And, because I had a dream, the world opened up to me. I have flown into little airports across the country and have met some of the nicest people that I would have never met had it not been for flying small airplanes. I even met my husband air racing.Yes, racing airplanes! That’s a story for another day. When I learned to fly, there were very few women pilots. Even today only 7% of pilots in the United States are women.

ANOTHER POINT OF VIEW Melody is full of surprises. Besides being a skillful pilot, she also has a flair for writing. I’m often asking for article ideas or submissions and she’s been kind enough to contribute the following piece about her views on this world of aviation for us to enjoy.

Charlie and Melody Horton just completed a three-day course with Gary DaleHeReeves.offersvideo courses that concentrate on Garmin and Avidyne GPS systems as well as the Foreflight application. For those who want to dive even deeper into the operation of those systems, the three-day course is done in your own aircraft.Check out all Gary has to offer at www.pilotsafety.org and congratulations Charlie and Melody on going that extra mile to sharpen those skills.

They say a good pilot is always learning. While some people don’t seek instruction until their flight review is due, the best pilots are always looking for ways to sharpen their skills or even learn new skills. There are many programs available for pilots to work on basic airmanship or instrument skills. While a professional pilot may do multiple instrument approaches each day, it’s not as easy for most of us to maintain instrument proficiency since an instrument approach or two in a month is about all we might see.

A young girl was visiting our house one day and was amazed as Melody taxied by in her plane. She asked, ‘Was that a lady pilot?’ I was surprised that in our day a young lady didn’t see that she could do whatever she wanted to do. I hope more women consider aviation as a hobby or a profession. There are many groups that promote aviation for women. One of the largest organizations is Women in Aviation www.ninety-nines.orggroupwww.wai.orgInternational.AnotherisTheNinety-Nines. We are still novelties to some extent, but we share the same passion for flying as all pilots. There is no greater feeling than being in the air, looking down on the peaceful earth. All your everyday stresses fade away. Your neighbors on the Diamondhead Airport are a mix of private pilots who fly for the fun of it (like me), as well as corporate and airline pilots who chose flying as a career. For the parents reading this, have your children (boys AND GIRLS) been introduced to aviation?
