The President’s Report By Ernie Knobloch

he deadline for this article was March 13, 2021, so some condi tions may have been updated before you actually receive the April edition of the Diamondhead News. Latitude 30 Patio & Grill has been opened for approximately a month and the remodeling, plus the spring weather, has resulted in an in crease in usage. If you’re interested in quiet dining, The Oak Room is now open for business. The Sunday brunch continues to be a favor ite of many residents. Work con tinues to finetune the operation of the facility. The concierge desk in the lobby of the clubhouse, which is open during normal business hours, has made it more conve nient for members to handle POA business. ID pictures can be taken there. If you already have a POA ID card, you do not need to take a new one every year. The information associated with your card is updated on a monthly basis. Be sure to show your ID card to your server in the club to receive the member’s discount. The Tennis Club at Diamond head, formally Tennis World, has some administrative changes to provide a better product and

T

increase usage. If you’ve never been to the tennis area, check it out. The courts in the facility are in excellent condition and a variety of levels of play are avail able from the tennis novice to higher levels. Be sure to intro duce yourself to Matt. COVID restrictions in 2020 resulted in a substantial loss of POA income from banquets, parties, weddings, and other similar activities. Since many people have received their vac cine and some of the restrictions have been removed, it’s antici pated that there will be a signif icant increase in activities in this area. An interesting observation is that nationally and locally, CO VID resulted in an increase in golf play, probably due to the nature of the game. The number of visiting golfers and tourna ment play has increased. It’s always interesting to meet vis iting golfers/golf groups and talk to them about their experiences here. One group of 125 golfers recently returned for their 25th consecutive year. Another group of four returned for their 45th year. Yes, that’s correct — 45 years. Most of the firsttime visitors are surprised at what Diamondhead has to offer in terms of facilities. Did you know that Diamond

head has one of the largest ju nior golf programs in the south east U.S.? There are over 400 kids involved, including ones from Louisiana who come here to participate. As the weather warms, you’ll see more and more younger golfers on the courses. The annual Easter Egg hunt for our youngsters was sched uled in March. In the past there’s always been a good turnout for the event and, hopefully, the weather was good for the event this year. The original developer of Diamondhead retained owner ship for the canal bottoms south of I10. Since the POA cannot spend money to improve private property, and the City is legally prohibited from doing almost all drainage work on private proper ty, the result has been a constant problem with silting in the ca nals, thereby decreasing boat usage. The good news is that the original developer has now agreed to donate the canal bot toms to the City. The City will then be able to apply for grants to improve the canal bottoms since silting has had a negative effect on drainage. Much of the rainwater south of I10 runs into the finger canals. This has been a problem for the approximately 20 years that I’ve lived here.

Although it will probably take a year to legally get everything in place to start, this is a major positive improvement for our community. The refurbishing of the two piers that were heavily damaged during hurricane Zeta continues to be a challenge due to insur ance and legal requirements involving the grant that’s being used to make the repairs. Hope

fully, you’ll see some visible improvements in the near future. Please be sure to sign up with the POA to receive eblasts about what’s going on in our commu nity on a regular basis. Finally, if you haven’t visited the clubhouse lately, consider coming over and at least con duct your own walk through. Everyone is invited to visit the club and use the facility.
