Important notice concerning upcoming Diamondhead Property Owners Association election of Officers and Directors Dear Members, Candidates and members raised a concern regarding the upcoming election. There was fear that a technical procedure was not followed that could invalidate the election if anyone challenged it. Out of an abundance of caution, the POA requested a thirdparty legal opinion regarding whether proceeding as-is could invalidate the election. The legal conclusion is that it was a possibility. I, as the Election Chairperson, after discussion with the board and input from numerous candidates and legal counsel, determined that all steps necessary to maintain the validity of the election must occur. To that end, an entirely new election packet will be mailed out to all the members in substantially the same form as the previous packet.
What does this mean? First, it means that the annual membership meeting will NOT be held on the date originally scheduled. Second, the meeting will be held on July 18, 2020. Third, the absentee ballots mailed with the notice dated May 15, 2020, are NOT VALID. Lastly, the only means to vote by absentee ballot will be via the new absentee ballot included in the UPDATED 2020 ELECTION MATERIAL packet that is being sent to the members on or about Friday, June 12. Community CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 6 Diamondhead has had a feral, or “free-roaming” cat problem for a long time. Currently, we are receiving many calls from residents who have found a momma cat and kittens tucked away somewhere in their yard or surrounding area. The procedure we are recommending to them is to humanely trap the momma cat once she has stopped nursing the kittens. The SPCA has made arrangements with the local vets in advance for spaying the female and neutering the male cats. Plus, rabies shots are given. After the cats’ surgery and recovery, they will need to be released back into the neighborhood where they were found or if someone has a farm with a barn, they make good outdoor mouse hunters. The Hancock County Animal Shelter cannot accept adult feral cats because they are not adoptable. Once the kittens are weened, the Shelter will take them for adoption. Keep in mind, that the behavior of the de-sexed feral cats will be modified. Male cats are no longer competing or fighting with each other, spraying urine or roaming blocks away from their neighborhood. Females no longer yowl to seek a mate. These behaviors are typically reduced immediately and eliminated completely only a month after the surgery. As mentioned, TNR (trap/ neuter/release) provides vaccines, so the cats are
healthier and do not pose a threat to public health. The SPCA has purchased additional traps and will make them available to residents to borrow. We also have printed instructions on the best and most humane way to trap the cats. For residents who want to keep these “community cats” out of their yard, please consider a humane deterrent. For example, a motion activated sprinkler like the ScareCrow has an infrared sensor that releases a 3-second blast of water. Similarly, there is CatStop, which is motionactivated with an ultrasonic high-pitched sound that repels cats. There are also herbs like rue, which is a highly aromatic plant with yellow flowers. Not only does it deter cats, but also deer, rabbits, and garden pests like slugs. Whether you love or loathe community cats, TNR is the most effective and humane way to effectively reduce the number of feral cats and also reduce nuisance behaviors. If anyone would like to volunteer to trap these community cats, we would all greatly appreciate it. The Hancock Animal Shelter has many new kittens to choose from. If you have been thinking about an addition to your family or know someone who has been wanting a little furry friend, please call the Shelter for an appointment at (228) 4664516.

We hope this issue of the Diamondhead News finds all of you well. The library staff has started the process of increasing services as much as possible within the guidelines from government officials. The following information is accurate as of the middle of June when this issue went to press. Call the library at 2554800 if you have questions. You can also find updates on Facebook under “Hancock County Library System” or “Friends of Hancock County Library.” Many new ebooks are available for kids and adults! This is awesome on many levels, but particularly because the kids who participate in the Summer Reading Program will have many more options. Yes, the Summer Reading Program, Imagine your Story — Mythology and Fairy Tales, is happening! We’ve got a few changes though! The program will begin in July. Online, children will register and log books they read. New program materials and crafts will be available for pickup each week at all library branches. Participants may check out hard copies using the procedure below, or take advantage of ebooks. The weekly presentations will be totally online. These

CLUBS DIAMONDHEAD WOMEN’S CLUB The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 2. This will be a membership meeting and a Meet and Greet. Pass the word to former members and bring a friend. The location for this meeting has not yet been determined and is subject to government regulations regarding the size of gatherings. DH GEAUX HIKING CLUB As the year 2020 passes the mid-point and we once again experience the July heat of a coastal summer, this year is far from typical. No one could have imagined a world-wide pandemic, protesters in the streets, a flooding tropical storm and a complete change in how many of us live. But, even though the DH Geaux Hiking Club is refraining from organized hiking (and eating) experiences, our members continue to stay in touch with each other and hike along some of our favorite venues (while remaining “physically distant,” of course.) Here are a few recommendations from some of the Geaux Hikers: A Twelve Oaks Walking Trail in Ocean Springs, MS As majestic as it sounds, it’s named for the numerous live oaks that dot the trail. The trees’ branches

seem to stretch out forever, resulting in a widespread canopy that’s sure to leave you in awe. Signage provides information on their past, which spans 400 years. The trail includes a mixed pine and oak forest, headwater bay swamps, and a large area of tidal marsh. A Possum Hiking Trail in Pearlington, MS This trail starts at an old gravel service road that heads toward the Pearl River. Following the old Dummyline Railroad, you pass through the pine forest and the swampy land of the Bogue Homa
along a raised boardwalk, bridge, canoe launch and overlook. The boardwalk then leads to the Pearl River and the historic site of Logtown, which was one of the largest logging operations in the world. Bird watchers will find White-eyed Vireo, Yellowbreasted Chat, Indigo Bunting and more rarely, Painted Bunting. P.E.O. Chapter Q proudly sponsored Emma Palmer of Pass Christian who is a 2020-2021 recipient of the Miriam Scarborough Scholarship for $2,200. Emma, an honors graduate of Pass Christian High School, will be entering Mississippi State University as a sophomore. She plans to go to medical school when she graduates and become a neurologist.
P.E.O. Chapter Q welcomes Tracy Welsh as a Shared Sister. Tracy is a member of P.E.O Chapter XP in Palm Springs, CA. Each summer she visits family in Bay St. Louis. We are looking forward to seeing her at our Aug. 19 meeting.
Lauren Willis, a graduate of Our Lady Academy, was awarded a scholarship in the amount of $250 by P.E.O. Chapter U of Diamondhead. It was presented by the chairman of the STAR committee, Marilyn Lott. Lauren received this special scholarship as Chapter U’s STAR applicant for 2020. Lauren will be studying biology at the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College at Ole Miss.

A Red Bluff (The “Little Grand Canyon”) in Foxworth, MS This massive geologic formation is located in a small town on private property; luckily, though, the owner of the property doesn’t seem to mind people visiting. One look at the vibrant red and orange soil that Red Bluff is made of and it’s clear how the canyon got its name. Standing at the canyon’s edge offers
some of the best views in the state, but you can do more than admire Red Bluff from afar. You can actually hike down to the bottom of the canyon for some close-up views of the unique landscape. This hike is not easy, however. Google any of these locations for directions and more information. If you go to any of these (or anywhere else), please take photos of your hike and post them to our Facebook page, DH Geaux Hiking Club. If you’re not a member, it’s easy to join. Just ask. There are no fees and everyone is welcome. We’re all looking for-
ward to the time when we can get back together as a group, enjoy some commentary from our somewhat “colorful” members, benefit from some sunshine and exercise and, of course … share a meal! (Yup … getting downright tired of my own cooking!) But until it is possible to do this safely, our “formal” (oh, OK, “semi-formal,” no tux required) club gatherings are suspended (jeepers, remember the morning Obie showed up in his “unmentionables?”) But that does not mean we aren’t “hiking.” We’re just doing it in very small groups. We call another
member or two and suggest a meeting place from where we can walk in the company of a friend and enjoy our beautiful coastal community. So, what are you waiting for? Call a friend or other club member. Make a plan. Take “a hike” (no, not that way …). Eat a picnic lunch at separate tables. But Geaux Hiking … and as Roy and Dale used to sing as they signed off, “Happy trails to you, until we meet again.”

Goals: 1) improve transparency by conducting business in similar way public entities must act 2) review structure and financial processes of the POA to ensure accountability 3) work to ensure property values do not decrease. POA actions, not words, will determine our success.
Having served on the POA Board for six years, I have developed extensive insight into the business of the POA. We have spent the years protecting and improving the amenities for all, streamlining finances and business processes, and forging a path forward to preserve the POA, Our POA is financially sound, and we continue to identify and meet potential challenges that we face. I humbly ask to serve another term to continue the work of keeping the Diamondhead POA thriving and viable. I will continue to answer every call and email, and I am here for you.
As your POA board secretary for the past two years, I have fulfilled my campaign promises and keep our membership informed about POA Board business. We have published all meeting agendas and minutes as quickly as possible. I Karen Rice have been responsive and worked to ensure that you, the members, were represented fairly. Our officer team has enforced the covenants and increased compliance and collections by record numbers. As a former teacher, I realize how important experience is in effective leadership. Please re-elect me to use the experience I have gained in this position to continue creating a vibrant and open POA.

My husband, Thom, and I have been residents since 2010. I have a master’s degree in Nursing, currently teach RN’s online, and am recording secretary for Chapter T, PEO. My leadership experience is as a Vice President of Nursing. I hope to serve property owners by participating in Board decisions, assuring cost-effective management of the amenities in the process. As past Secretary of the POA Nancy Sislow Board (2012-2014 and 2017-2018), I bring knowledge of the Board’s role, leadership and secretarial experience to the Property Owners Association Board of Directors.
My name is John Bunce and I have been a Diamondhead resident for over 20 years. I live with my wife Jan (married 37 years). My working career was spent as a scientist, program director, and resource manager for a large military organization. My education is in public administration/ John Bunce management. Since retirement, I have worked for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office as an Investigator, deputy, and currently a reserve deputy. My goal for the Diamondhead POA is to provide residents with an efficient and transparent organization that provides resident with an excellent community while maintaining residential property values.
RICHARD SHEPPARD Ricky is a New Orleans native who has made his home in Diamondhead with his wife, Tracy. They chose our community, over others on the Coast, because of the amenities and the covenants that protect them. He is an avid outdoorsman and has enjoyed the opportunity to rediscover his golf game since moving here. As the Director of World Sales for Richard Sheppard Compass Water Solutions, Ricky negotiates agreements with people of different cultures and value systems. His business acumen and strength of character will serve him well in navigating the POA through 2020 and beyond and reuniting a divided Diamondhead.
GERALD GILLEN My name is Jerry Gillen, and it would be an honor to serve as your POA Vice President. My wife Philippa and I have been property owners in Diamondhead for 29 years, living here for 13 years before Hurricane Katrina and subsequently for the past 3 years. My name is Karen Rayner and I am running again for POA Treasurer. In the last election I was pleasantly surprised to have garnered so many votes! Thank you all again! Fast forward to 2020 we are still at the threshold of expiring covenants and I would like to help. Karen Rayner My expertise lies in business management and I truly enjoy numbers and problem solving. I am a proponent of the “fresh eyes” approach to business and believe we need change in leadership to help us navigate to a more prosperous future for all residents. Bridging the gap generationally is a large factor in this task and I humbly ask for your participation and vote for the future of our community.
My becoming the Gardner Realtors Bay St. Louis/Diamondhead Manager in 2013 began our journey to Diamondhead. In 2015, after 7 months of remodeling we moved from our Slidell home of 42 years. Licensed in 1977, protection of the public and property values is part of me. I served as WCR President, STAR President, LRA Director and was elected to the ST Republican Executive Patricia Burgoyne Committee. I retired as Manager in August, going back into real estate sales. My husband “Art”, a retired Civil Engineer, and i own a travel franchise “Dream Vacations”. I pledge my assistance solving the challenges of our POA and its continued success!
I have been a member and property owner for more than 25 years. I’ve seen the problems with the POA and its board. The only way that the POA will survive is with full disclosure of all business dealings, all financials, all costs and all income streams. No longer can a small minority operate the poa as their private serfdom. The POA will survive on volPat McCrossen untary dues. To do that the board and the organization must be responsive to the needs of all the property owners. Diamondhead is a special place because of the people who live here.

Owned a number of properties and served on HOA Boards as President, Vicepresident, and Director. Dennis Tauzin After Katrina, employed by FEMA to assess damage in St Tammany Parish. Served as the Deputy Director before leaving. Employed by an Engineering firm to assist St Bernard Parish in its recovery. Inter-faced directly with the Parish President and Parish Council. Assisted in interactions with FEMA to secure the funds necessary for the rebuild of the Parish Properties. I formed my own Consulting Group of Engineers and Architects to assist with this project. Retired to Diamondhead as a full-time resident. Currently serving as a ranger on our golf courses.

DIRECTOR TERESA ERTEL Teresa L Ertel, resident of Diamondhead. My husband and I have owned several properties in Diamondhead for over fifteen years. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Management from Eastern University. My work experience includes operations Teresa Ertel management and administrative/ project type management. I was President of my previous homeowner’s association and a board member for over fifteen years. I fully understand the workings of POA boards and feel qualified to help facilitate the evolving changes in our community. The POA Board must help lead Diamondhead into the future. I am married and have three grown stepchildren and seven grandchildren.
I am Ronald L. James, I recently retired and moved to Diamondhead in November 2018. I previously lived in Diamondhead from 1987-1992 when I moved to Houston, Texas for continued employment. I worked in the Offshore Oil and Gas industry my entire career around the world (on 6 of the 7 Ronald James continents). I’ve worked from entry level jobs through middle management into VP officer level the last 10 years. I have been responsible for developing yearly budgets, reviewing with staff and management through final acceptance. We set yearly goals for Safety, Personnel and Financial performance with transparent reviews each quarter.
LLOYD RAMIREZ JR. Lloyd Ramirez Jr. I’m married to Jenny Ramirez. We moved to Diamondhead in January of 2015. I retired from Shell Oil Co. in May of 2017 after 32-plus years of service. I attend Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church and recently joined the Knights of Columbus. Lloyd Ramirez Jr. Throughout the years I have been involved with many community activities and projects. I am concerned about the future of the POA and the amenities. I believe through transparency of activities and accountability of finances, the POA can gain the trust of association members in order to save the amenities and uphold property values.

We have recently refurbished all of the fencing and windscreens. New double gates will be installed this month to upgrade our facility. Also, the board recently approved changing all of our court lights to LED lights. This is a big improvement and will lower our electric bill considerably. Plans are also in the works for clubhouse improvements and ground landscaping.

Feel free to share with all your golf buddies. One of the best events of the year! Held annually on the first weekend in June, the Hawaiian Couples Invitational was cancelled this year. In its place we hosted an 18-hole couples event, the DCC Couples Virtual Classic on Saturday, June 6. Our two full flights of teams followed the guidelines in place to keep everyone safe and had a great time.

We would like to congratulate all of our junior golf program members on their tremendous progress so far but in particular the two juniors that have qualified again for the US Kids Golf World Championships being held in Pinehurst, North Carolina, in August. Jack Lawson (age 12) and Karstyn Altese (age 11) both earned eligibility status to play in this championship. The U.S. Kids Golf World Championship is the largest and most prestigious event in the world of its kind. A threeday tournament, held in the setting of tall southern pines, attracts more than 1,500 participants from across the United States and more than 50 coun-
tries abroad. To receive an invitation, junior golfers must complete the season as a top player in their age category and shoot the minimum score twice during the season as required by the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship committee. Congratulations to each of them! Having juniors qualify for the World Championships from one club five years in a row is such an impressive accomplishment. Diamondhead Country Club was selected to host the 2020 Mississippi Women’s Amateur Championship on Aug. 7-9 on the Pine Golf Course. Well, the coronavirus continues to alter our lifestyle. But the good news is we are slowly but surely getting back to some semblance of normality. During the month of May we actually were able to get back to golfing with our Nines Ladies.
On Tuesday, May 5, with permission from our Golf Shop Pro were able to play with posted tee times. You can tell by the attendance that we were all looking forward to playing again. Thirty-four of our gals turned out playing in fivesomes as permitted by our Pro Shop. Everyone just played their own game and entered their scores into the GHIN handicap system. It was truly fun to be outside and playing the game we all have come to both love and hate depending on the day. Unfortunately, our Annual Aloha Tournament scheduled for May 12 and
19 had to be cancelled as we still were not allowed to gather in larger groups to celebrate this event. Keep reading our reports as we will eventually reschedule the tournament. Tuesday, May 12, found us playing the back nine of the Cardinal Course and fielding four teams of four players and three teams of five players. However, we still just played straight golf recording our own scores in the handicap system. We were reminded to continue to record our Birdies and Chip-Ins during our league play. To that

CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 22 end, on April 28, Therese Mauterer scored a Birdie on the second hole of the Cardinal, Chip-Ins were recorded by Shirley Halterman on 5/5, hole #14 of the Pine; Pat VanDervort also on 5/5 but on hole #16; and Ruthie O’Neill on 5/12, hole #11 of the Cardinal. Thirty gals turned out on Tuesday, May 19, to play a Shamble. In case you are new to golf and not familiar with this term, it simply means that each member of the foursome tees off. The best drive is taken and from then on you play your own game. These scores cannot be entered for handicap purposes as you haven’t played just your own game for all the strokes. A Scramble with Free Toss was played on Tuesday, May 26. We fielded seven foursomes. Although we still cannot gather in the clubhouse, only “bragging rights” are in order as no funds are exchanged and, therefore, no points recorded. By the way, a Scramble with free toss is a game where you play a traditional Scramble always using the best played ball in the foursome but on each hole you have the opportunity to decide if your team would like to pick up the ball and throw it further with no additional stroke being counted. Sounds easy but isn’t always. Once the decision is made each member of the foursome must throw the ball. This can be especially helpful if your best ball happens be in a trap or has a very difficult lie. Two teams in this event managed to come up with a score of 29 strokes for nine holes. Sue Hebert, Kathy Jones, Therese Mauterer and Mary Mizell comprised one team; and Diana Moore, Mary Murray, Kathie Pierson and Cheryl Saak made up the other team. Good job, gals! As we are gradually able to congregate on a more regular basis, we will keep you posted of our Post-Virus adventures on the golf course. Stay safe!

Community CONTINUED, FROM PAGE 7 will include videos of artist Michael Albert demonstrating different art projects, a Puppet Show and a Snake Man for kids, Virtual Animation for teens, and Wacky Science for all to enjoy. Christian Stephenson of the Extension Service will do programs on the Science of Fairy Tales as an added bonus. Excel by 5 will have their pre-school Rubber Ducky program online as well, so the whole family can join in. If you know of someone who may be interested but does not have internet access, they can absolutely participate! Call the library to
find out how. Hard copy book checkouts are now available but again we’ve got some changes! The library is not operating its shuttle between branches at this time. This means that you must go to the branch where the book is located to pick it up. Pickup times are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As of now, the procedure is to reserve your book online or by calling the library. When you are notified that the book is ready you will go to the branch where it is located.
Call that library when you arrive and a librarian will bring the materials out to your car. You may be asked to show your ID. And that’s it! Procedures will change as official directives are received, so watch the library website and Facebook sites listed above or call for clarification. Faithful gathered at the parking lot across from the Community Center to send off Reverend Chas and Elaine Jones as they are moving to Virginia. We had approximately 20 vehicles in the caravan. We all caravaned to the Jones’ home with horns blaring as we all said goodbye to two wonderful servants of Christ. A team of members went ahead of the car line to make a presentation of a framed letter from the Presbytery of Mississippi recognizing Reverend Jones as Honorably Retired Pastor Emeritus.
