First, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our members for making May such a fantastic month. It’s been a pleasure seeing so many familiar faces enjoying lunch, brunch, and dinner at the Red Horse. Your continued support and presence truly bring the club to life.
As we look ahead to summer, I’m excited to share that we have an exceptional lineup of member events planned. My focus is on making each one more memorable than the last, while continuing to celebrate and enhance the cherished traditions of Diablo.
We’ll be firing up the barbecue again soon, and I’m thrilled to announce the next Chef’s Table experience will be entirely BBQ-themed, served outdoors for a relaxed and flavorful evening under the sun. For June, our themed dinner nights will take place on Thursdays and Sundays, and we’re introducing a monthly Champagne Brunch featuring a mimosa bar, build-your-own Bloody Mary station, tableside oyster shucking, and a variety of brunch-focused menu items.
On the culinary front, June welcomes the arrival of seasonal favorites like asparagus, corn, and fava beans, along with fresh melons and stone fruit. You’ll also see fresh Yellowtail, Mahi, and Striped Bass featured in our specials.
Katia continues to impress with her exceptional desserts—member feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. As we head into June, she’ll be focusing on the beautiful bounty of local stone fruit, taking advantage of the season’s freshest offerings. With access to outstanding local farms, her creations are sure to shine. Highlights include Mandarinquats and mint varieties from Gold Ridge Organic Farms, along with vibrant edible flowers from Marin Roots Farm. Expect her desserts to be as visually stunning as they are delicious—true expressions of summer’s best flavors.
Thank you again!

Spring has sprung and Summer is around the corner for golf at Diablo Country Club! With the golf course in fabulous shape and rounds continuing to climb, Diablo golf and tournament season is in full force.
We always talk about The Masters starting off the season for golf, but here at Diablo it is the Drive, Chip, and Putt and the Girls Age Group Champion Ellie Kim. Ellie represented Diablo with an unprecedented win in her first Drive, Chip, and Putt Championship at Augusta National, winning by one inch in a putt off. Amazing stuff! Equally amazing was her poise as she spoke to a national audience in an interview. My favorite line of the interview, was when she was asked “what has been your favorite part of this experience?” Ellie, with her bubbling personality, “Winning!” Could not have said it better myself!
Senior golf has been in full force for Diablo, as we have had our senior men travel to a few away tournaments in the Spring. Bob Chace, Tom Terril, Ron Bredehoft and Brad Omick all placed at Blackhawk, while Tony Quintong, Joe Buenavista, and Bob Hagerty all placed at Castlewood. Tuesday, June 24, will be our first home match, if any senior is interested in playing, please contact the Golf Shop.
Then there was the first MPS major of the year. Some describe the Four Man event, consisting of 36 holes of team best ball, the best weekend of the
year. It did not disappoint this year, as the team of Bradley Sherman, Jonny Serencsa, Jason Enriquez, and Edward Brown came from behind with a blistering 21 under par to win the overall championship. After an exciting three hole horse race, the team of Adam Gold, Eric Ebert, Matt Wallker, and Scott Sans won in an extra hole playoff.
Lastly, even I ventured into the world of competitive golf, traveling to Florida to play in the PGA Club Professional National Championship. Competing against 312 club professionals, the top 70 made the cut, with the top 20 going to Quail Hollow for the PGA Championship. Although I did not play my best and missed the cut, it was still amazing to get out and compete!
With so much tournament golf played and so much in the future, how do we make sure that we are playing our best at the right time? Practice of course! Making sure that we are practicing the right thing as well. Look for future clinics from the professional staff to help you practice the right way!

The senior season is well underway with one home event and four away events in the book.
Thus far we have had only one rainout and that was back in March for our Kickoff and none since.
At the kickoff event on March 26, we had multiple winners in three flights. In flight one, the team of Barenberg, Pasichuke, and Nittler took first. In flight two, the team of Kroyer, Buenavista, Fischer and Morgan scored a first. In flight three Krider, Pauling. Hagerty and Bredehoft notched a win. In all $600 in shop credits were distributed to the winning players.
RICHMOND PLAY was pretty slow at Richmond because 132 seniors from 6 clubs were competing for prizes. We had one flight winners (congrats Bob Hagerty) and multiple winners in the two other flights in this opening event on April 10. In flight one, second place went to Tom Terrill and third to Mike Carroll and Dave Yarnold. In flight two, Gary Ryness scored a second. In flight three Hagerty was our lone flight winner with Jim Green and Brian Magstadt coming in second.
CONTRA COSTA: The men from Diablo fared far better at Contra Costa on April 16. Over $360 was won in shop credits at Contra Costa, far surpassing the measly $210 won at Richmond. At Contra Costa the afternoon round was marred by high winds. In flight one Mike Barenberg placed first and Tony Abramo and Rick Steffens third. In flight two Rob Goldstein and Hank Salvo secured a first, Cecil Dunlap and Dave Yarnold a second, and Mark Pierce and Mike Riley third. In flight three Eric Reichanadter scored a first and Gary Ryness a third. No Diablo man earned a closest to the pin prize on the five three pars. Like our Golden State Warriors, we can’t wait for another shot in 2026!
BLACKHAWK: Our Diablo men ventured south to Blackhawk on April 30 with $130 won in shop credits. Firsts pay more than thirds. In the two flights hosted by the Blackhawk Senior Men’s Association on the Falls course, Diablo had 4 prize winners. As dreary as the weather was at Contra Costa, the balmy morning at Blackhawk was a welcome relief. The greens and fairways at Blackhawk have never looked better. In flight one, Bob Chace scored our only first and Tom Terrill a second. In flight two Ron Bredehoft placed second and Brad Omick third. Mike Carroll secured a closest to the pin prize on hole 13 with a shot to 8 feet 3 inches.
CASTLEWOOD: We had 13 players from Diablo in the field of 90 from 5 guest clubs. $90 in shop credit money was won and the weather was again perfect. The Castlewood Hill course played firm and fast and the field was broken into 3 flights. Diablo managed prizes in two of the three. In flight one, Tony Quintong placed first and Joe Buenavista third. In flight two Bob Hagerty placed third. That was it. Our bright spot was a shot to 3 feet 6 inches on hole 6 by Dave Yarnold.
For the first time the “Senior of the Year” will come from a competition at the end of the season among the 8 top points winners. Currently our top points people are Mike Barenberg, Ron Bredehoft, Joe Buenavista, Mike Carroll, Bob Hagerty, Bruce Kroyer, Brian Magstadt, Jim Pasichuke, Tom Terrill and Dave Yarnold. It is early in the season but the more events you play in the better your chances to be one of the 8.
NEXT TRIPS: The next venues for the traveling seniors will be Oakhurst on May 22, Green Valley on June 4, and Round Hill on June 11. On June 24 we will have a home event with players from Contra Costa, Orinda, Crow Canyon and Sequoyah coming to play our wonderful course.

On April 15, Kruti Amin led organizing a beautiful Welcome to Spring Bonanza for the Niners. Thank you, Kruti, Kristin Hoffman, Carla Quinn and Lori Smith, for their work on this event. Congratulations to first place winners Rebecca Adams, Susan Strickler, Gretchen Hunt & Leslei Wuischpard. Also great job to closest to the pin winner Carrie Perino and Kristen Hoffman for longest drive!
Another fun spring golf day followed on May 13, Derby Days, hosted by Shelly Barnes. Shelly made the day extra challenging by only allowing 4 clubs for the entire round. Thank you Shelly! Congratulations to first place winners Cheryl Burleigh and Alice Schultz and to closest to the pin winner Alice Schultz and longest drive winners Jessica Chatto and Cheryl Miller.
Because so many Niners are golfing on Tuesdays, head Pro David Solomon has added 8:30 to 9:00am tee times exclusively for the Niners. Starting in Mid-May the tee time block, for Niners only, will run from 8:30 to 10:00am!
David has also offered to hold Wednesday morning tee times for Niners on those weeks where a holiday falls on a Monday and the course is closed on the following Tuesday. Look for the tee sheet change! Memorial Day will be our first holiday to try out Wednesday golf for the Niners. Thank you David for being so accommodating to our growing group!
A putt counting game will be in play the first Tuesday of every month from May 6 to October 7. If you submit your putts for at least 4 of the 6 contest days, you can win a prize! The prizes are given at the holiday luncheon at the end of the year.
Please post after every round, even if you don't like the outcome! Based on handicaps from the beginning of the year to the end, one Niner will be crowned the most improved golfer for the year. It is important to post all your scores!
ON
Because we have such a variety of players enjoying the Niners, we have established that all skill games will have two levels, those with a handicap of 36 or lower and those above 36. Each "Closest to the Pin" or 'Longest Drive" competition will have two winners! Look for the measuring tape that is meant for you!
Many women enjoyed two full days of mainly oncourse lessons offered last year. We welcome back the LPGA trained instructors who will return this summer, July 28‒29! The Pro Shop is organizing this event for all Diablo women golfers. Look for Phil’s email or call the Pro Shop. Space is limited.

Thank you to Lindsay Walker for putting together this great day offering members the opportunity to showcase our beautiful course and clubhouse!
The two-day Spring Fling followed with the option of competing either one or two days. The holeby-hole eclectic format allowed participants to improve their overall score if they competed both days. Karen Bard and Becky Bates did an amazing job planning every detail—thank you! The lively competition resulted in the following winners:

TOTALLY 80’S TENNIS SOCIAL A Rad Throwback to Remember!
Break out the neon and crank up the mixtape, our Totally 80’s Member/Member Tennis Social on May 16 was a blast from the past! Players came dressed to impress in full 80’s fashion, ready to rally hard and have fun. The competition was fierce, but the energy was all about totally good vibes.
We topped off the day with delicious food, classic 80’s tunes, and an unforgettable exhibition match featuring our very own Racquet Sports Director Marco Sanchez, along with Huntley Montgomery, Ryan Sablan, and Payton Young. They brought the heat and gave the crowd a show to remember!
Thank you to everyone who participated, it was one of those days that perfectly captured the spirit of our Diablo community: fun, friendly, and full of heart.
A great serve starts with a great toss. If your toss is off, everything else timing, balance, power falls apart. Here’s how to refine your tossing technique:
1. Use Your Non-Dominant Arm Like a Lever
∙ Keep it straight – Your tossing arm should be fully extended, like a lever. Avoid bending the elbow.
∙ Lift from the shoulder – Raise your arm smoothly from your thigh to the sky, leading with the shoulder. This prevents flicking the wrist or breaking the motion.
∙ Release at the right spot – Let go of the ball around nose height to ensure a clean, controlled toss.
∙ Reach all the way up – After releasing the ball, continue extending your tossing arm fully overhead.
∙ Turn your wrist inward – Slightly rotate your wrist toward your head to help lock your body into the “trophy pose.” This promotes balance and delays rotation until it’s time to swing.
∙ Ideal peak – The ball should reach about 6–12 inches above your racket’s contact point.
∙ Why it matters:
▷ Toss too low = rushed, incomplete motion
▷ Toss too high = timing and rhythm problems
Think of your tossing arm like the backbone of your serve. A consistent toss sets up a powerful, balanced motion every time.

Summer at Diablo means the Sharks are in the water! Our Diablo Sharks Swim Team, led by Head Coach Taylor Herman, kicked off the summer season with Back to Pool Night in early May. Our young athletes, ranging from ages 4 to 18, are training hard, practicing 5 days a week and competing in meets across the region on Wednesdays and Saturdays. And we manage to have a lot of fun along the way!
Contra Costa County has a rich history of summer league swimming, and we are proud to be a part of the area's storied swim culture. The Sharks season will end in late July with a big league championship meet followed by County Championships in early August. We look forward to sharing the pool with you.

Tyler is one of our new trainers and is currently leading a baseball/softball strength and conditioning class on Thursdays, which has grown into an all-around strength and conditioning class! He’s TPI Level 1 certified and earned his bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University. Tyler is also available for personal training, specializing in building strength, conditioning for sports, and helping athletes (or anyone!) build a strong foundation.
Mike and Tyler will be teaming up to bring even more sports conditioning programs to Diablo. These classes help kids build strength, agility, and endurance while keeping things fun and supportive. Stay tuned!
Fitness Center is for 16+ years old members only.
“Our new gym has inspired me to learn how to use free weights and machines. It’s so clean, and high tech! I also have made the switch from group fitness classes in Danville to the unlimited class pass at the Club.”
We’re super lucky to have Ian join us from some of the top sports clubs in the area — he came highly recommended! Ian has a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and certifications in USA Weightlifting Level 1 (USAW1), Precision Nutrition 1 (PN1), and is a certified personal trainer through NSCA. He’s now leading a weightlifting class on Wednesdays at 5:30 PM, focused on form, fat burning, and building muscle through smart strength training. His classes are great for all fitness levels!
“The Diablo Country Club gym is a beautiful, well-equipped space that makes every workout enjoyable. The knowledgeable instructors provide excellent classes and expert support, creating an inspiring and motivating fitness environment."
Lauren brings great energy to her HIIT class! She’s certified in Pilates and also trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Right now, Lauren is teaching HIIT classes on Fridays at 11:30am. We’re also planning to kick off women’s self-defense classes in May—and trust me, they’re going to fill up fast, so keep an eye out for those!
You might already know Michelle from our front desk, but she’s also a certified Yoga instructor! She has hosted a Yin Yoga event and is now teaching a Heated Vinyasa Yoga class on Wednesday evenings at 5:00pm. Be on the lookout for more fun Yoga events with her too!

As I write this, we’re heading into playoffs week, and the excitement is building! Five leagues will compete over four nights for a chance to play in the Championship Matches on Saturday, June 7. My next article will feature photos of the playoff teams and celebrate our new Club Champion, but for now, I’d like to reflect on the season and spotlight a standout team.
We kicked off Season 2 thrilled to have our 4-court bocce area fully ready. We added new tables, chairs, and benches, installed sunshades over the pergolas, and just last week added two fans to help keep players cool while they relax in the shade. Earlier in the season, we also purchased new heaters to keep things cozy on cooler nights— but those are now pushed away as we break out the sunscreen and hats!
Our original plan for light bites and Willie’s Food Truck returning took an unexpected turn due to delays in permitting and a surprise water leak. Unfortunately, we won’t be using the food truck this season, but we truly appreciate your patience and support as we worked to bring that idea to life. The good news is that Chef Andy is preparing fresh and fun food options for the playoffs and championship weekend—and we’ll keep you posted on our food plans for the fall season.
We’re also honored to be hosting the Tournament of Champions at Diablo on Saturday, June 22! We’ll welcome teams from Blackhawk, Castlewood, and Round Hill Country Club for a one-day tournament. Mark your calendars and come cheer us on or wish our team good luck!
It was great to see all the teams on the courts at once during the Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday matches. The shared time slot brought an
extra level of energy and made the courts feel more active and exciting. We hope you enjoy crossing paths with more players during your matches.
Lastly, a huge shoutout to Sunday Team “Irish Rollers”, the only team this season to go undefeated with 7 matches and 7 wins! Their hard work and positive attitudes have truly made a difference. They are not only great bocce players but also incredible members—always cheering for their opponents’ great shots, clapping for good rolls, and showing the utmost sportsmanship with handshakes at the end of every match.
Good luck to everyone competing this week—I can’t wait to see who will be crowned our next Club Champion!

At Diablo, we believe the club experience should be enjoyable for the entire family — and that’s exactly why our Kids Club is such an essential part of our community.
The Kids Club provides a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment where children can learn, play, and interact with others their age. These moments of social connection and creative play are incredibly important for young minds. With themed activities, hands-on crafts, and plenty of opportunities to build friendships, children thrive in the care of our experienced team.
While the kids are having fun, parents can take a well-deserved break. Enjoy a quiet meal at the Clubhouse, play bocce, work out in the fitness center, or participate in tennis, pickleball, or golf lessons. The Kids Club makes it all possible by giving parents time and peace of mind to enjoy the full club experience.
Since the renovation of our dedicated Kids Club space, we’ve seen tremendous support from families and growing participation in our programs. To continue meeting the needs of our members, we’re excited to announce our new summer hours — offering even more flexibility for your schedule.
