GENERAL MANAGER

As I conclude my first month as General Manager, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for the warm welcome and support I have received from so many of you. It has been both an honor and a privilege to join this exceptional community, and I am deeply appreciative of the trust you have placed in me.

Over the past several weeks, I have immersed myself in the daily rhythm of the club—meeting members, engaging with staff, and observing the many ways in which this institution fosters connection, tradition, and excellence. What has stood out most is the profound sense of pride and ownership that exists among our membership. It is clear that this club is not merely a place of recreation, but a cherished extension of your lives and families.

During this initial period, my focus has been threefold:

1. Listening and Learning — I have prioritized conversations with members, staff, and leadership to gain a comprehensive understanding of the club’s culture, operations, and aspirations.

2. Operational Assessment — I have worked closely with department heads to evaluate our current systems and identify opportunities for refinement and improvement.

3. Team Engagement — I have begun the process of strengthening our internal culture, ensuring that our staff feels supported, empowered, and aligned with our shared commitment to excellence.

Looking ahead, I am excited to collaborate with the Board and the broader membership on a strategic vision that honors the club’s legacy while positioning us for continued success. This includes enhancing the member experience, investing in our facilities and staff, and fostering a culture of transparency, innovation, and hospitality.

I believe that the most successful clubs are those that evolve thoughtfully guided by tradition but not bound by it. With your continued support and engagement, I am confident that we can build upon the strong foundation that has been laid and usher in a new era of excellence.

Please know that my door is always open. I welcome your insights, your feedback, and your ideas. Together, we will ensure that this club remains a source of pride and enjoyment for generations to come.

With sincere appreciation,

Welcome

HISTORY

On the rain-washed slopes of Mount Diablo, in the spring of 1877, a prime portion of California’s future was changing hands.

Back then, today's Diablo was called the Railroad Ranch. Sixteen hundred rolling acres, stitched across the western base of the mountain, had been in the private domain of four men who ruled the rails across the American West: Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, Leland Stanford, and Collis P. Huntington—the Associates, also known as the Big Four. They had stitched iron rails into the body of the continent, run gold and people westward to San Francisco, and leveraged their wealth into land and industry across the burgeoning state.

Yet this land deal was different. Standing at the transaction’s center, General David D. Colton. Colton was a Californian of reputation and ambition: a miner, railroad officer, and military man, with a knack for rising to meet opportunity. He was the newest partner of The Associates, and over the past two years, the business manager for the property.

The ranch had appeal—not just for its beauty, but because it represented the tangible fruits of California’s railroad boom. But the sale was to be no ordinary cash transaction. Colton came with something else: 168 shares in the Rocky Mountain Coal and Iron Company. To the Associates, this was not just paper—these shares controlled a portion of the coal reserves in the high country of Wyoming, a vital resource for powering the locomotives that their fortunes depended upon. Those 168 shares were appraised at $50,000, a princely sum in the days when gold lay thick in Sacramento’s banks.

For Crocker, Hopkins, Stanford, and Huntington, this was less a relinquishment of land than an exchange of one form of power for another—the coal that would fuel their trains, and with them, their empire. For Colton, the ranch represented

more than acreage: it signified admission to the elite fraternity of California’s industrialists, the Associates having invited him not just into their land dealings, but also their confidences.

The paperwork was formalized: Colton handed over the shares; the Associates signed off the deed to the Railroad Ranch on June 19, 1877. The last light caught the top of the mountain, and a new line was drawn in the California dirt.

The significance did not end at signatures. Under Colton’s ownership, the ranch would change hands again after his passing, next being named the Cook Ranch, then Oakwood Park Stock Farm as it expanded, shifting from one epoch of California agriculture to another.

The 1877 deal was emblematic of its era. Land, coal, and capital were exchanged with a handshake and a signed agreement, but also with a mutual understanding: power in California came not merely from what you owned, but from who you partnered with. The Big Four and Colton, through this transaction, illustrated the new dynamic of the Gilded Age—one where visionaries bartered fortunes and shaped the future not just with shovels or plows, but with stock certificates.

On those undulating acres, the dreams of the railroad—its tracks, its men, its unprecedented reach—were literally and figuratively rooted in California soil. The soil that today we call Diablo Country Club.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHEF

I would like to begin by sincerely thanking you for the overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding the food quality at the Club. Our team has been placing a strong emphasis on consistency and excellence, and it’s truly rewarding to see our efforts recognized. Your continued support and appreciation mean a great deal to all of us.

August is one of my favorite months for creating menus and specials. The Bay Area offers an abundance of high-quality seasonal ingredients this time of year, especially vibrant produce, fresh lettuce, and exceptional stone fruits. You’ll notice these ingredients featured more prominently across our offerings. We’re proud to continue sourcing from FEED Sonoma, a virtual farmers’ market that connects us with small, independent farms typically only found at local markets. This month, we’re particularly excited about the heirloom tomatoes from Full Belly Farm and the incredible stone fruits from Nicolas Boldt Farms. On the seafood side, we’ll be showcasing local Chinook Salmon and Albacore Tuna—both seasonal highlights that we’re thrilled to prepare for you.

We also have several exciting culinary events planned throughout August. These include the return of the Chef’s Barbecue on Watson’s Vista (with the date to be announced), an intimate Chef’s Table experience at Red Horse, and the

continuation of our themed Thursday nights throughout the month. These events give us the opportunity to experiment creatively while bringing members together around a shared love of food and community.

Our pastry chef, Katia, continues to amaze us with her seasonal dessert creations, many of which are fast becoming member favorites. With August being one of the warmest months of the year, I’ve asked Katia to focus her talents on a dedicated ice cream and sorbet program, using the best of what summer has to offer. One early standout we’re already excited about is her Honeycomb & Madagascar Vanilla Ice Cream. This dessert features our specialty honey blended with rich vanilla ice cream, folded with real chunks of honeycomb, and finished with delicate flakes of sea salt. It’s a refreshing, indulgent treat that we’re confident will be a hit.

Thank you once again to everyone who has dined with us or participated in our events. We’re looking forward to sharing another memorable month of food, flavors, and fellowship with you in August.

FROM THE AGRONOMY TEAM

COURSE UPDATE: SUMMER TURF CHALLENGES & WHAT’S AHEAD

Late June and early July brought a few turf health curveballs — our Bentgrass greens and surrounds faced pressure from both disease and nematodes (tiny root-damaging worms). These pests can seriously disrupt how plants absorb water and nutrients, leading to noticeable decline in turf quality.

Thankfully, our agronomy team quickly diagnosed the issue and jumped into action. Thanks to prompt treatment and ongoing management, our greens are back in peak condition — and we’re now even better positioned to proactively handle future outbreaks.

During the week of July 21, we tackled several cultural practices to keep Diablo in top shape as we head into the fall season:

∙ Greens were vertically mowed and aerated using a ¼” core, followed by light topdressing for surface smoothness and firmness.

∙ Tees received similar treatment with a slightly larger 3/8” core and heavier topdressing, taking advantage of Bermudagrass’s vigorous summer recovery.

We appreciate your patience — these efforts will pay off as we prepare for the Men’s Invitational Gold Putter and prime autumn golf.

WHAT’S NEXT?

∙ Restoring Fescue Bunker Surrounds

Several areas have dried out or been overtaken by Bermudagrass. We'll begin restoration, aiming for the uniform, healthy look you see at #17 green.

∙ Practice Facility Enhancements

Planning is underway to elevate your practice experience — stay tuned for updates!

We’re committed to keeping your course in championship shape. See you on the green!

MID-SUMMER GOLF UPDATE: Putting, Presidents Cup, and Summer Successes

With summer halfway over and the PGA Tour’s major championships behind us, many of us find ourselves wishing we could play like Scottie Scheffler. But the truth is—with some practice and instruction—you can improve your game and make meaningful progress.

Take a cue from Scottie: over the last couple of years, he transformed himself from one of the least effective putters on tour into a Top 25 performer. His secret? A combination of focused instruction, green-reading techniques, and an equipment change. If the No. 1 player in the world is still working to improve, so can we!

If you’re currently putting with a blade-style putter and seeking more forgiveness, consider switching to a mallet-style putter. Mallets offer better balance and forgiveness on off-center hits, helping you achieve more consistent distance and roll.

Not sure if you're reading the greens correctly? Follow the water! At Diablo CC, most greens break in the direction the water flows. Generally, that means toward the 16TH green, with the area around 14TH green and 15TH tee flowing toward the fence behind the 14TH tee. Understanding the slope and drainage of the course can make a world of difference. Green reading and speed control are the two most important factors in successful putting!

2025 DIRECTOR’S AND PRESIDENT’S CUP RECAP

This year’s Director’s and President’s Cup was packed with excitement—especially in the Open Division, which came down to the final hole on Sunday.

∙ Vinnie Aicle and Phil Damaschino Director’s Cup Champions

∙ David Buchanan outlasted Jason Enriquez and Brian McDonnell to win the Gross Division

∙ Edward Brown was the only player to finish under par Net, taking the Net title

In the Senior Division:

∙ John Connell captured the Gross title

∙ While Jim Pasichuke earned a two-stroke win in the Net Division

In the Super Senior Flight, Day 2 stole the show:

∙ Joe Raphel played lights-out to win Gross

∙ Club President Mark Holmstedt shot even par Net to take the title

Congratulations to all our winners!

COUPLES EVENTS KEEP THE SUMMER FUN ROLLING

We’ve hosted two incredible Couples (Duos) events this summer—both with great attendance and even better competition!

In the Mystery Mixer, the golf staff paired twosomes into foursomes for a fun 9-hole scramble. Gene and Vick Glockner clinched the overall win by a single stroke.

In the 2025 Couples Member-Member, the team of Ryan & Megan Hansen and Chris & Jessica Chatto took top honors with a score of 130. This unique Jack & Jill format—counting one best ball from the men and one from the women— proved challenging, but the champs pulled off a one-shot victory!

LOOKING

AHEAD: Fall Events & Practice Opportunities

With the Gold Putter, DWGG Classic, and Pop Smith Invitationals on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to fine-tune your game. Whether it's a quick tip, a full lesson, or an equipment consult, your Golf Staff is always here to help.

Let’s finish the season strong—Play fast. Play well. Have fun. And always remember: Golf is hard—enjoy the challenge!

EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES GOLF

SENIOR GOLF NEWS

The senior season has reached the halfway mark after our away event on July 9. We have 13 more events to go! So far, our first 12 events have dodged both rain and extremely hot weather. There are ample opportunities for guys to register for our upcoming away and home events. Thirty days before a scheduled event, the registration period begins on the Diablo golf calendar and there are limits to how many players we can bring to away events, so register the sooner the better.

OAKHURST

In our fifth away event of the 2025 season, 13 foursomes from Oakhurst, Fountian Grove, Moraga, Diablo, and Rossmoor competed for prizes on a lovely May 22. Our lone Diablo winner was Tony Abramo. His 5 birdies helped that along. Tim Pauling and Brian Magstadt collected seconds and Joe Buenavista and Dave Yarnold won third place prizes. Joe Buenavista and Tony Abramo won closest to the pin honors.

GREEN VALLEY

One of our favorite courses to play in the senior rotation is Green Valley in the Suisun Valley. Green Valley limits the number of players because of a shortage of golf carts, so we could only bring 15 on

June 4. In two flights with players from Green Valley, Napa Valley, Meadow Club, and Diablo, our men captured first place in both. In flight one the winner was Mark Nittler, second place went to Joe Buenavista and Tom Terrill and John Nystrom finished with thirds. In flight two Bill Houston and Gene Glockner placed first. Hank Salvo took second, Dave Yarnold and Bob Chace won closest to the pin prizes.

ROUND HILL

On June 11, 14 Diablo men played at Round Hill. There was a large field of 19 foursomes from Diablo, Round Hill and Moraga split into three flights. Diablo winners in flight one included Rick Steffens with a first, Dave Yarnold with a second

Tony Abramo and Brian Magstadt
Ron Bredehoft and John Nystrom
Dave Yarnold

and Greg Gibbert with a third. In flight two Eric Reichanadter finished first, Cecil Dunlap second, and Brian Magstadt and Dean McElroy shared third. In flight three our only prize winner was Bill Houston with a third. Rick Steffens and Bill Houston were the closest to the pin winners.

HOME EVENT ON JUNE 24

Diablo welcomed Contra Costa, Crow Canyon, Sequoyah, and Orinda to our first home event. The food prepared by Chef Andy was the hit of the day. The 96 players in 25 foursomes and three flights competed on a warm and wonderful day. Our flight one winners were Skip Bowen with a first, and Rob Goldstein with a second. In flight two Bruce Kroyer placed first, Tom Terrill second, and Bob Hagerty third. In flight three first went to Jim Pasichuke, second to Gary Ryness, and third to Bob Chace Closest to the pin honors went to Skip Bowen on hole 3.

SILVERADO

July 1 saw 19 Diablo men at Silverado Resort on the famous North Course, the site of the annual PGA Fortinet Championship. The field from Claremont, Olympic, and Diablo joined with the Silverado seniors in 2 flights. In flight one Bob Chace was our only prize winner with a second place finish. In flight two Terry Spraker turned his low gross 77 into a first place finish, Gary Ryness a second, and Hank Salvo a third. Bob Chace won closest to the pin on number 11.

HOME EVENT ON JULY 8

Diablo welcomed guest players from 5 visiting clubs. Men from Silverado, Claremont, San Jose, Green Valley and Sonoma all competed in 24

foursomes with 92 players including 24 from Diablo. In flight one Jim Pasichuke was our winner, second went to Bob Hagerty, and third went to Terry Spraker. In flight two Cecil Dunlap came in first, Jim Clark second, and John Nystrom third. In flight three Paul Bensi placed first, Skip Bowen second, and Bill Houston third. Closest to the pin honors went to Rick Steffens and Eric Horodas

Chef Andy provided a fantastic lunch before our play with Diablo sliders, chicken parmesan and Philly cheese steak sandwiches and several salads. When we returned from the round we dined on crispy chicken wings, 3 cheese arancini balls, beef satays, and spring rolls. So, no matter the weather or the bad shots, we had something to cheer about.

PENINSULA

For the first time in Diablo senior men’s history, we played at Peninsula in San Mateo on July 9. Only 31 miles away, this classic Donald Ross course has not seen many Diablo members over the years. We joined Peninsula and Half Moon Bay on a perfect summer morning for some memorable rounds. Ross courses are famous for multi-level greens, huge bunkers and false fronts. Our low medalist for the day was Joe Buenavista with an 81 and Tim Pauling earned low net with a 71. Flight winners included Tim Pauling with a second in flight one, Mile Carroll with a first in flight two, and Jim Clark

Eric Horodas
Terry Spraker, Rick Steffens, and Bill Houston

with a second in flight two. Closest to the pin honors went to Jim Pasichuke. Hopefully we get a better turnout than the 10 we had this year for 2026 to continue this home and home tradition on this classic course from 1911.

COMING UP

The seniors will play Claremont on Thursday, July 24, Orinda on Tuesday, July 29, a Home Event with Richmond, Oakhurst, Blackhawk, and Napa Valley on Wednesday August 6th, a trip to Sequoyah on Thursday August 7, and our first ever senior men’s trip to Sonoma on Thursday, August 14, Napa Valley on Thursday, August 21, and San Jose on Tuesday, August 26. September and October will have us play in 5 more events including the allimportant (and reformatted) Senior Invitational called Pop Smith. It is not too soon to find your partner for the Pop Smith.

Another fun summer event was the Ice Cream Social chaired by Linda Merrill, Hallie Grossman, and Adrienne Yarnold. Ice cream was waiting after #9 along with prizes for the best score in each foursome.

OTHER NINER NEWS:

Carol Kroyer has been managing guest days with Blackhawk, Round Hill and Orinda Country Clubs Thank you Carol for representing the Niners to the other local Country Clubs with your time, effort and hospitality.

Carol Santa Maria worked with Assistant Pro, Phil Prajsler, creating a special on the course clinic. Golfers who played on June 10 received the tips on the 5th hole.

Summer is prime golf season, and every open slot on the course is desired. Our pro shop opens up unbooked tee times at the 48-hour mark if they are not consistently filled. We will lose our block if tee times are not taken in advance. Please grab tee times by Sunday prior to the Tuesday Niner block.

We are in the middle of our summer putting contest. Good luck to all who are participating. Remember Niners who would like to "take the turn" and play more than 9 holes are encouraged to move on to the 10th hole and build up your stamina toward 18 holes.

The Niners welcome golfers of all levels. If you are interested in membership, please contact Ashley Thomsen at ashcousa@gmail.com.

Happy Summer!

SWIM SEASON RECAP

The Diablo Sharks swim team is just rocked another successful season, team records achieved, popped times, mastered swim techniques, and all done in a community that supports each other and is happy for each other’s accomplishments.

Currently as this article is coming out, the team is at The County Championships. This is a meet held for all recreational swim teams from Contra Costa County, that have achieved a time standard in order to attend this meet. This is a fun fast swim meet that includes individual events and relays. This meet is like icing on top of the cake for these swimmers competing May to July. The community at this event is excited to see the best of the best compete yet again for a chance to earn medals!

This season our theme was Yacht Rock the Boat . Our team fully embraced this concept and brought the vibe to every meet.
