I'm on the membership committee and trying to get the word out that we need our members to be proud ambassadors to the public and help us build our membership through referrals.

The Club’s goal is to sell 15 to 20 new proprietary (golf) memberships this year. Spring has sprung and it's the perfect time to showcase our beautiful club to your friends. There are some great incentives for referrals!

Contact Nikole Rubyn at nikoler@diablocc.org if you can think of anybody who wants to apply for membership that you can sponsor.

Thank you!"

HISTORY

Golf competitors were treated to two new Watson holes for the Ladies’ Relief Society Tournament, a celebration fundraiser to kick off the summer golf season of 1922. Great effort was made to attract a large number of visitors to play golf and watch the professional exhibition that followed the member competition. It featured Diablo’s Bob MacDonald teaming up with Claremont’s John Black (pictured on the left) versus an amateur golfer who twice earned the title of Northern California Amateur Champion, and the brothers were strong competition for any set of professionals.

The course started on the new first hole designed by William Watson and played the new second as a par-six, 619-yard hole. Par-six golf holes were not uncommon in 1922, and the long hole was a combination of the newly designed Watson second fairway and the original Neville second green, which Watson rerouted to the current fourth green in his final design. The course continued on the seven remaining Neville holes, then repeated the same route a second time to create an 18-hole match.

With the attraction of these star players and the new course, Diablo hosted the largest number of guests on record that day, with gallery tickets and entry fees swelling the coffers to $1,600 in support of the Ladies’ Relief Society. Heavy rains fell the day before the tournament, and the Oakland Tribune reported, “The greens and fairways were in excellent condition after Friday’s rainfall and Pop Smith, the veteran green-keeper’s careful grooming.”

Onlookers were amazed when Bob MacDonald reached the par-6 green in three and carded the only birdie-5 of the day. At the end, Black and Bob MacDonald prevailed in a tightly

contested match, 3 and 2. Black was at the top of his game, carding a two-under-par 35 for the first nine. MacDonald Smith’s course record of 34 withstood the barrage of these talented amateurs and professionals. Although a case was made that with the temporary addition of a par6, the 35 carded by Black was essentially a tie of the record.

Seven weeks later, at the U.S. Open in Columbia, Maryland, Black tied with Bobby Jones for second place, one stroke behind the 1922 champion, Gene Sarazen.

The member and guest flight winners came exclusively from our sister club, the Claremont Country Club, and include:

∙ Edward M. Walsh Trophy won by Leon A. Clark

∙ Adolph Uhl Cup won by H. R. Curtis

∙ Walton N. Moore Trophy won by H. R. Struthers

NOTE: The Adolph Uhl Trophy (pictured above) is featured at Diablo Country Club in our trophy case, available for member viewing in the events hallway outside of the Carriage Lounge.

SPRING GREETINGS FROM THE RED HORSE & PUB

As we welcome the vibrant season of Spring, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our valued members for your continued support. It was a pleasure seeing so many of you enjoying our recent theme nights. Your participation has truly made these events memorable, and we look forward to hosting many more in the future.

In the spirit of innovation and fun, we are excited to announce a few new theme nights: Hawaiian Night, Homestyle Night, and Tapas Night. We will share the dates for these events soon, so please stay tuned for updates on our monthly event calendar.

Additionally, we are delighted to introduce new seasonal ingredients to our menus. I’m looking forward to the addition of asparagus, artichokes, and pomelos, with English peas coming soon. We’re excited to incorporate these fresh, seasonal flavors into our dishes and elevate your dining experience. Some of the items we’ve been testing include Asparagus Fettuccine Carbonara, Asparagus Corn Fritters, and Asparagus Fries.

KATIA'S PASTRY CREATIONS:

A Spring to Remember

We are thrilled to highlight the exceptional work Katia has been doing to elevate our pastry program. Her monthly specials have been incredibly well-received, and each new addition quickly becomes a member favorite. Katia is particularly excited about the fresh flavors of Spring, with strawberries, rhubarb, and cherries topping her list of seasonal ingredients. I can’t wait to see how she incorporates these vibrant flavors into her delicious creations—Strawberry Shortbread Trifle and Frozen Strawberry Lemonade Pie, to name a few.

Thank you once again for being a part of our community. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF EVENTS

Spring seems to have arrived early this year at Diablo & we have zero complaints about it! Speaking of flowers, I hope you enjoyed the Father Daughter Dance, special shout out & thanks to my assistant, Rylee, our receptionist, Michelle, and our banquet captain, Elena for always entertaining my grand ideas, this time around for that DIY corsage and boutonniere station. I think I owe those gals a manicure for the logistics and floral prep that went into this super fun event!

These past few months have continued on with my campaign to bring unique, exciting & engaging events back to Diablo. Special thanks to those Members (you know who you are!) who pushed us to take more risks & host more innovative and progressive leaning events, kicking off the start to our 2025 event season! Our EPIC Entitled Housewife Comedy Show and the Oakland Lacrosse Benefit Concert featuring Shane Smith & the Saints―would not have happened without your help!

You can find detailed information for the next few months of events on our website, but I wanted to make sure to highlight here a couple of new, exciting and hopefully impactful additions to our roster of event traditions:

MURDER MYSTERY DINNER MIDNIGHT MASQUERADE

Thursday, April 24

We are traveling back to the Roaring Twenties, where jazz fills the air, flappers dazzle, and secret passwords unlock doors. Share in this night full of glitz, glamour, and a little mystery, with prohibition-inspired cocktails, and an interactive atmosphere brimming with intrigue and indulgence. You’ll want to be here for this unforgettable masquerade!

DIABLO STRIKES BACK, MAY THE 4TH BRUNCH

Sunday, May 4

This event will be fun for all ages, loaded with Interactive Characters, a DJ, Jedi Training, themed food & drinks (you know Chef Andy & Team go all out for these types of creative events), and lots more Diablo Empire activities! Come dressed to impress as your favorite Star Wars character, there’s guaranteed to be steep competition for costume contests!

While we have a vibrant & diverse event calendar with lots of new ideas on the horizon, I would love to take this opportunity to encourage you to reach out with any private event needs. It’s no secret that our department had some roadblocks in the past with cost, access & flexibility in booking events for our Members. I think you will find that our collective new direction is all about making it easier for you to host lively, unforgettable events that will make both you and our Club look good, and ultimately to have your guests in awe of the exclusive & elevated experience our Club offers.

Until our next gathering, may the course be with you.

FROM THE HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL

APRIL MARKS THE START OF GOLF SEASON AT DIABLO

April is here, and with it comes the unofficial start of golf season! The Masters has wrapped up, the days are getting longer, and it’s time to dust off those shorts, break out the pristine white golf shoes you’ve been saving, and start swinging with confidence. After a wet and chilly winter, there's no better time to hit the course!

We’ve already teed off the tournament season at Diablo CC, with the 2025 Mystery Mixer kicking things off in early March. Congratulations to the winning team of Sara Sanders, Lindsay Walker, and Alice Schultz, who narrowly edged out June Joseph, Marni Godvin, Jill Paischuke, and Debi Mescall. Great playing by all! Up next is the Men’s Four-Man Event, often dubbed the best weekend of the year. Good luck to all participants—may your putts drop and your drives find the fairway!

PRACTICE SMARTER, NOT HARDER

As we dive into tournament season, let’s talk about practicing with purpose. I recently had a conversation with a former pro basketball player who used to put up 500+ shots a day in practice, believing that volume was the key to success. However, when he spoke with Klay Thompson, one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, he was surprised by Klay’s response: "150 shots a day—but the right 150."

This principle applies perfectly to golf. Instead of endlessly hitting balls on the range, focus on 120 yards and in—including chipping and putting. If we can master this distance and consistently get up and down in 2-3 strokes, our scores will drop

dramatically! The best part? Diablo’s practice facilities are built for exactly this kind of improvement. While some may see our space as limited, in reality, it’s forcing us to focus on the part of the game that truly lowers scores.

COURSE CONDITIONS & ETIQUETTE

Have you noticed the course greening up? Our Bermuda grass is waking up from its winter nap, and it’s looking fantastic! But keeping Diablo in top shape requires all of us to do our part:

∙ Use the gate system when driving carts—stay out of the rough!

∙ Pair up in carts when possible—fewer wheels mean healthier turf.

∙ Fill divots & fix ball marks—small actions make a big difference!

Let’s respect the course and keep it looking its best all season long.

Remember, golf is hard—but that’s what makes it fun! Embrace the challenge, enjoy the journey, and let’s make this season at Diablo one to remember.

best ball format tournament. The “Mystery Mixer” grouped golfers with mixed indexes in teams of 3 or 4, creating an atmosphere of lively and friendly competition. Congratulations to winners Sara Sanders, Lindsay Walker and Alice Shultz with a net score of 52!

After the tournament a delicious buffet lunch was served in the Curtola Room followed by a very well-attended business meeting, led by Captain Sia McDonald. Among some topics discussed were the 2025 budget and some changes to the tournament schedule. The Executive Board was announced:

One of the most notable highlights from the meeting was the announcement of DWGG’s plan to increase participation with the First Tee TriValley, which was presented by Julie Hoyle and Katie Alworth.

Julie, who serves on the board of the First Tee TriValley, spoke about how the non-profit strives to impact the lives of local youth by providing educational programs that build character and promote lifeenhancing values through the game of golf.

“Last year we served over 1200 youth and supported more than 50 families with financial aid. Like any non-profit, we seek donations, both monetary and in-kind, to sustain our operations and expand our programming. We are grateful for the support of so many at Diablo Country Club.”

Katie ,who heads up DWGG’s community outreach added,

“The DWGG will increase our community impact by supporting young golfers in the TriValley area through more exposure at events, such as the Classic Invitational, as well as spring and fall donation drives.”

For more information about the First Tee Tri-Valley or how to contribute, visit www.firstteetrivalley.org, or contact Julie at juliehoyle@gmail.com, or Katie at kalworth77@gmail.com.
