How to get the cottagecore look at home

If you love wildflowers, crafting, embroidery, plants and a fairy tale-like esthetic, the cottagecore look may be right for you. This trendy style evokes the atmosphere, lifestyle and romanticism of English country houses. Fortunately, you don’t have to live in a literal cottage to get the look. Here’s how to bring this design style into your home.

THE WALLS

To create a dreamy and poetic atmosphere, paint the walls in pastel tones.Alternatively, apply a flowery wallpaper.Just make sure the print isn’t too busy, as this can overwhelm the space.

THE FLOOR

Whether it’s wood or ceramic, light flooring is a good fit for the cottagecore look. If you add a rug, consider choosing a white or beige macramé model.

THE FURNITURE

Wood, wicker, rattan and other natural materials con tr beds and other furniture made of these materials.Vin tage and antique pieces are also on theme.

Do you need more room in your cramped kitchen? Here are six smart ideas to make the most of a small space.

1. Mount a rail to the wall. Use a support bar and hooks to hang utensils, measuring cups, pots, pans, oven mitts, cutting boards and anything else you want to keep handy.

Install them above the stove, fridge, countertop and doorway. Shelves provide an easy storage solution for spices, bins of pasta, candy containers, fresh herbs and more.

Opt for integrated design features. Built-in appliances or a trash chute incorporated into the countertop can help you make the most of a small space. Similarly, a slide-out shelf can extend your countertop surface.

Get two-in-one appliances. A combination oven, which acts as both an oven and a microwave, allows you to have a single appliance that can bake, grill and reheat food.A microwave with a built-in hood is also a great option.

5. Install cabinets close to the ceiling Build them high to maximize storage space, and use the top shelves for items you rely on less frequently. Just be sure to keep a folding step ladder nearby so you can easily reach any item.

6. Invest in a portable cooktop. Some electric cooktops 6 tips for setting up a small kitchen

Smart lighting tips to help you save

Are you looking for ways to cut down on the amount of power you use at home? If so, here are some tips that will allow you to more e ciently light your home.

USE THE POWER OF REFLECTION

Choose light colours for the walls. White re ects up to 80 per cent of the light in a room, while black only reects 10 per cent. This means that lighter rooms need less lighting to illuminate them than darker ones.

Another trick is to place your table and standing lamps in corners so that the light re ects o two walls at once.

USE THE BARE MINIMUM

Choose lightbulbs that are just powerful enough for the activities you plan to do in a given area. A needlessly powerful light will waste energy.

Avoid linking more than one light to a single switch and install dimmers to control the intensity of each xture. It’s also a good idea to equip outside lights with motion detectors or timers.

Finally, turn o every light when going to bed, leaving a room or heading out.

choose the best windows for your home

USE ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTBULBS

Compact uorescent lamps (CFL) and light-emitting diodes (LED) use less energy than standard halogen lights (respectively 75 and 90 per cent less). They also last a lot longer.

When buying bulbs, make sure to look for the best lumen-to-watt ratio. A better ratio means that the bulb will provide more light while using less energy.

Outside, opt for solar-powered lamps. The LED light bulbs on them will run for up to 100,000 hours, but once they burn out, they can’t be replaced.

CHOOSE YOUR FIXTURES WISELY

When selecting light xtures, remember that transparent and light-coloured lampshades let more light through than dark ones. In addition, pivoting lamps allow you to e ectively target the light cast.

CLEAN YOUR LIGHT FIXTURES

A buildup of dust and dirt can dull the intensity of your indoor lighting. To ensure that the maximum amount of light possible gets emitted from each lamp, keep your xtures, bulbs and shades clean.

3 bad habits that will amp up your energy bills

If you follow these tips, you’ll more e ciently light your home and therefore save on your energy bill. the

the country falls into zones 2 and 3. To know which zone your property is in, visit energystar.gc.ca and then nd out which product is appropriate for that zone.

For instance, windows and doors used in zones 2 and 3 should have an energy rating (ER) score of 29 and 34 respectively. The higher the ER, the more energy e cient a window or door is.

TAKE YOUR NEEDS INTO ACCOUNT

If your home is old or exposed to extreme weather conditions, you may be better o choosing specialized products. For instance, high-solar gain glazing may allow some people to save money on their annual power bill, while others might bene t from high-performance window seals. Make sure to speak to a professional to make the right choice.

Energy e cient windows are pricy but a good investment, if they’re installed properly. In addition, don’t forget that replacing your old windows with Energy Star ones could entitle you to a tax credit.

Many homeowners are surprised to learn how much energy their electronic devices use. If you’re looking for ways to conserve energy and spend less on your utility bills, here are three habits that you should break immediately.

1. Watching television and movies on gaming consoles. Video game consoles use 30 to 45 per cent more power than televisions. In addition, running one high-de nition gaming console requires the equivalent amount of energy as running 10 BluRay devices. You’re better o using your console for nothing but gaming.

2. Leaving your electronics plugged in all the time. This is a common habit, but did you know that many electronic devices use up to 40 per cent

of the energy required for their functioning, even when they’re turned o ?

Unplugging your toaster and co ee maker after breakfast and removing chargers from outlets once devices are charged will help you conserve energy.

3. Not thinking through purchases. Laser printers use nearly twice as much power as inkjet versions. Before buying one, ask yourself if the increase in energy consumption over traditional models is worth it.

Similarly, a 55-inch flat-screen TV uses twice as much energy as a 32-inch model. Consider whether the upgrade in size is worth it.

The bottom line is that you should evaluate your needs and make purchasing decisions accordingly.

In sum, to save energy at home you should evaluate what electronics you use and how you use them. Doing so will allow you to save on your utility bills and may even extend the lifespan of your devices.

What to know when buying an older home to renovate

If you’re handy with home repairs and in the market for a new house, investing in an older home can be a great idea. Sometimes, however, people who love to build can focus too much on what they’re going to change and ignore some other essential points about older houses. Be sure to keep in mind these three things when looking for an older home to renovate.

If you’re handy with home repairs and in the market for a new house, investing in an older home can be a great idea. Sometimes, however, people who love to build can focus too much on what they’re going to change and ignore some other essential points about older houses. Be sure to keep in mind these three things when looking for an older home to renovate.

1. ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Renovating an older home is best when most of the problems are simply cosmetic. One fundamental issue to take care of, however, is your home’s energy efficiency. Will it be costly to insulate it, or will it simply be a matter of replacing a few windows?

2. WATER QUALITY

inside the house itself. If you have water on your property, have it tested to be sure it’s safe (particularly if you’ll be drinking it).

3. HISTORIC STATUS

inside the house itself. If you have water on your property, have it tested to be sure it’s safe (particularly if you’ll be drinking it).

If enough people agree with you that an older home should be preserved, either your home or some aspect of the surrounding area may have historic protection status. This can, in some cases, affect what changes you can and cannot make to a house or property. Be sure to check the status of any home before you buy.

This can, in some cases, affect what changes you can and cannot make to a house or property. Be sure to check the status of any home before you buy.

When you’re looking to buy a new house, the foundation is one of the most important aspects of any home you inspect. It’s literally what everything else about the house rests upon. Repairing a home’s foundation can cost in the five-figure range, so be sure to check the following three parts of a house when doing the rounds of open-house visits.

Why zoning laws?

When buying a piece of land or a property, it’s important to consider what kind of zoning laws are in place for the area you’re looking into. Zoning laws (especially in residential neighbourhoods) exist to ensure that everyone is satisfied with what goes on in their neighbourhood. Continue reading to find out what kind of zoning laws might affect you before you decide to buy.

RUNNING A HOME BUSINESS

If you’re looking to buy in a residential neighbourhood and planning to run a business out of your home, you’ll definitely want to check the zoning laws beforehand. If your business could cause undue disturbance to others living around you, it’s likely that zoning laws will prohibit you from doing so, and your business could be shut down. Talk to your neighbours before starting a business; find out how they’d feel about having it on their block. Often, this will only

LOOK UP, NOT DOWN

Foundations, by their nature, tend to be out of sight, so finding evidence of problems can be tough. If the lines of the top floors and attic are askew, that may be a sign of trouble below. If ceilings are uneven or if attic walls aren’t straight, this can also be a sign that the foundation has problems.

WINDOWS AND DOORS

Check to see if doors and windows close properly. If they jam for no apparent reason, the house itself may have foundational problems.

WALLS

Your exterior walls can sometimes change their shape from normal settling over the years and are therefore one of the least reliable indicators of foundation damage. Extreme bowing (walls sticking out in the middle), however, can be a sign of structural problems.

Consult with your local real estate agent to make sure you’re getting what you pay for when buying a home. He or she will help you avoid huge renovations from these kinds of hard-to-identify sources.

Three deal breakers when buying an older home

For many people, the unique character of an older house is a great attraction on the real estate market. But such properties also have unique problems that you should know about before buying.

MOULD AND TERMITE DAMAGE

While all homes are susceptible to these threats, older homes are often at a much higher risk than others, as they are more often made of materials attractive to these organisms. If you see extensive termite droppings near structural elements or that mould covers more than 10 square feet of the house, you may want to look elsewhere for a home.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

If the house you’re looking at was built before 1980, be sure to have the inspector check for lead pipes and asbestos. Lead pipes and asbestos were widely used in homes before their toxic effects on humans were recognized.

DUBIOUS NUMBERS

become an issue if an official letter of complaint is sent to local authorities. So do your due diligence before you decide on where to buy.

EXPANDING AN EXISTING PROPERTY

Sometimes, when you decide to buy, you do so with the idea in mind that you’ll be expanding the property to include an extension on the house. There are a number of reasons why you may not be allowed to extend (proximity to a neighbours fence, for example), so proceed with caution and find out before you make any add-on plans.

REPURPOSING YOUR LAND

Planning to buy in a rural area with the intent on changing the use of the land in question? Be sure to consult your local government before doing so to make sure that your lot is properly zoned for whatever changes you plan on making.

Zoning laws exist to protect your neighbours’ interests as much your own. They ensure that everyone is held to the same standard and that everybody’s interests are equally served. Get informed before you commit to the purchase of your new home or plot of land.

How to transform long, boring hallways

A long, dark hallway leading to some bedrooms and a bathroom… many homes have them. They are a vestige from the 1960’s and 70’s and, in the decades since, have been a real headache to redecorate. Here are a few tips to help you reduce that long, boring look.

Transforming a corridor into an interesting and agreeable part of the home is not particularly difficult. By learning some simple principles of interior design you can discover how to manipulate the space to add volume in this high-traffic area.

To diminish the effect of length, architectural elements can be added such as shelves or narrow tables on which dried flower arrangements or photographs can be positioned. If you have enough space you could even add bookshelves. Another option is to give your hallway a

picture gallery look by arranging family photographs, paintings or murals on the walls. Paint one of the end walls a dark colour or use warm colours such as reds or oranges, for example. Use wallpaper, also on an end wall, with a bold or large scale design, or use wallpaper with wide horizontal stripes.

Lighting is also an important element in creating the desired effect. Add lamps at short distances along the hallway to give a soft, yellow lighting. For a more dramatic effect create a low shelf, near the base of the wall, on which lights can be positioned projecting upwards to cut the space, creating intense pools of light right along the passageway.

A chair, placed at an angle between the f irst two doors could be the finishing touch and add even more character to what was once a boring hallway.

Refurbish your bathroom

The bathroom is dedicated to your comfort and well-being and deserves a lot of thought when it comes time to renovate. But this doesn’t necessarily involve major changes. As the latest trend is towards a rustic style, characterized by its classic lines, it is advisable to concentrate on the main elements of the bathroom: the bath and the tiling.

Bathroom decorations are still very classic and the traditional materials continue to be enamel, tiles and wood. So if your bathroom is looking shabby, why not give it a facelift.

For the tiling, you can start by removing all the rusting or cracked cement between the tiles. But before installing new cement, liven up the decor by creating a frieze. Draw waves

above the tiles and break an assortment of ceramic tiles into smallish pieces. Select the most attractive ones as well as some pebbles and shells. Apply a thin layer of cement and arrange these decorative elements according to your drawing. Fill in all the joints with cement and your bathroom will look almost new.

Almost new, because there’s only the bath left to be refurbished now. This can be accomplished by renewing the enamel with polyurethane paint. Under the right conditions, this paint should last a good ten years and your bathtub will look like new. The cost of having the enamel redone varies from $200 to $300 and the work should be guaranteed for five years.

The top 5 lighting systems for entrance halls

Entrance halls and vestibules are often very small but need quality lighting to brighten up dark mornings, festive evenings and surprise visits. Here are the top 5 lighting systems which will greet you after a hard day of work and create a welcoming atmosphere for your visitors.

1 – Suspended light fixtures

As lighting is decisive in creating atmosphere, the entrance hall is a good place to start. A soft effect can be very agreeable, especially if it comes from a filtered source of light diffused by a hanging fixture.

2 – Wall fixtures

Wall fixtures are an interesting option and they are less cumbersome than hanging fixtures. Lying flat against the wall, they give the impression of a mural and become a decorative element, lighting the top of the wall as well as the floor. There is a huge range of shapes to choose from: semi-circular, rectangular, sconces... You can even paint some wall lights the same colour as the wall.

3 – Light strips

Install plaster cornices with integrated light strips. The beam of light will be directed

towards the ceiling and the pattern on the cornice will project shadows into the entrance hall. Very classy!

4 – Spotlights

Install a row of spotlights in the ceiling of the entrance hall, preferably with a dimmer switch, so as not to dazzle your visitors. Both powerful and subtle at the same time, this type of lighting is suitable for modern decors.

5 – Picture lights

A painting or a photograph in an entrance hall always makes a good impression. So kill two birds with one stone – illuminate the artwork and light up the entrance hall!
