Devonport Jazz 2019

Page 1

WELCOME “To jazz, or not to jazz, there is no question!”

Louis Armstrong This year Devonport Jazz turns 18! In some ways in this year’s program we’re looking back. We are reflecting on the epic journey of our festival - our amazing guest artists of previous years, musical legends who are no longer with us and those who continue on, our valued Taskforce volunteers, and the people who, behind the scenes, embody the sentiments of Louis Armstrong, quoted above. We are excited to welcome back to the festival some of Australia’s most beloved jazz musicians - James Morrison, The Syncopators and Gianni Marinucci. They aren’t strangers to Devonport Jazz, but it has been a while since we have had the pleasure of hosting them. And what a way to celebrate July in Devonport! We also have a host of talent new to the festival including; drummer Ben Charnley, singer multi-instrumentalist Cam Giles, and the Royal Australian Navy Jazz Ensemble from Melbourne. Tassie talent abounds with King Cake, Les Coqs Incroyables, Django’s Tiger and Yesterday’s Gentlemen. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Our very special party will be a gala evening at the paranaple convention centre. The celebration will feature a three-course meal, and a full evening of entertainment. The Squeezebox Cabaret, presented by the Moonlight Aviators, is a cheeky show that has it all - tantalising tunes, a sultry songbird, beguiling bombshells, and a charismatic Master of Ceremonies. Dinner will be followed with music by Matthew Ives & his Big Band, where everyone can dance the night away to some of the best jazz songs ever written and the best big band in the State. If you’re looking for something a little bit unexpected, we also have a jazzy tribute to iconic Australian band INXS, pop-up choirs in Market Square and plenty of opportunities to get out and about in and around Devonport. Celebrate with us as Devonport Jazz comes of age. Mayor Cr Annette Rockliff
