Devonport Tasmania, Summer Activity Guide 2019 - 2020

Page 1

Mayor’s Message With the sun out, the weather warming up and those extra hours of sunlight at the end of the day, summer is a great time in our city. And when you factor in Christmas and New Year celebrations, and some quality sporting and community events planned, there will be plenty happening in and around Devonport over the next three months. So, my advice is – get out and amongst it! Summer will be kicked off with the annual Devonport Christmas Parade on Friday, 6 December at 6.30 p.m. This year’s parade will traverse a route taking in James Street, Victoria Parade, Bluff Road and Clements Street and there will be a Christmas market on the corner of Bluff Road and Clements Street between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Carols by Candlelight will be held at the Devonport Oval on Sunday, 8 December from 7.30 p.m. The Devonport Carnival – featuring cycling, running and woodchopping - will return to its traditional two-day format on 29 and 30 December at the Devonport Oval. And the following night the SkyFire New Year’s Eve event will be centred on Aitkenhead Point and land surrounding the Bass Strait Maritime Centre. Devonport will hold its Australia Day Citizenship Awards on Sunday, 26 January at the paranaple convention centre from 10 a.m. There are a host of other events and activities contained in this guide, so it will not be too hard to find something which appeals to you. Councillor Annette Rockliff, Mayor of Devonport

Devonport LIVING CITY Waterfront Park Completion late 2021 LIVING CITY is more than just buildings, it is also about new places, new experiences and new events. The new Waterfront Park will result in more public open green space than currently existing in the CBD, with the parkland extending across Formby Road into the area, adjacent to northern Rooke Street once occupied by commercial buildings. The Park will be intersected with three distinct promenades, two at ground level and one elevated. These promenades will physically and visually draw people from the City to the river. The elevated walkway will be a feature of the Park extending over Formby Road, the rail line and out over the river edge. Designed to replicate a traditional jetty or pier, the walkway will provide a public boundary to the southern edge of the park and be an exciting viewing point for shipping activity. Roundhouse Park will receive a substantial upgrade, with the existing walkway/cycle path remaining connected to the rest of the Mersey River walk. A unique nature-based playspace will be located between the railway line and the Mersey River, at the end of the elevated promenade. The Playspace will be complemented by an adjacent barbecue area with public facilities. A rotunda will be constructed, inspired by the roundhouse that once stood in this park, bearing the colour scheme of the current day trains that pass by. Existing major events will continue within the Park once completed, with additional features and services to improve existing and new community events
