Welcome to Devonport Jazz 2015 “Sometimes, when I hit a very tough wall, I listen to jazz. When you hear jazz, you learn the secret to solving any problem: you just have to improvise.”

The above words belong to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and they were part of his short, sweet and witty speech at the 2015 “International Jazz Day All-Star Global Concert” at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. There was also a daylong series of 55 jazz educational and community outreach programs followed by 30 free evening concerts (with Tricia Evy, who performed at Devonport Jazz 2013 featured in one of them).

Held every year on 30 April since 2012, the International Jazz Day was adopted

by UNESCO Member States on the initiative of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role in uniting people in all corners of the globe. The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz is the leading non-profit organisation charged with planning, promoting and producing this annual celebration.

In 2012, UNESCO and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz presented three high-profile programs: a daylong celebration in Paris at UNESCO World Headquarters; a sunrise concert in New Orleans’ Congo Square, the birthplace of jazz; and a sunset concert at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York City. In 2013 it was staged at Istanbul’s famed Hagia Irene Concert Hall and next year President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will host it from the White House. These Global concerts are streamed all over the world and later available on-demand. This year there were thousands of events held in all 196 UN and UNESCO member states on all seven continents.

In 2013 only five events were registered from Australia (the only one from Tasmania was our IJD celebration at the Wharf in Ulverstone; in 2012 we presented an IJD concert at Shearwater). In 2014 there were already 12 Australian events registered (the one from Tasmania was our concert at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery). This year Australia registered 15 events, but this time the University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music joined North West Tasmania to celebrate as well.

With jazz now getting so much attention and recognition as a force for freedom, tolerance and cooperation I think Devonport Jazz is like a potential bride waiting for her potential groom (Devonport LIVING CITY Project) to propose a marriage. What an awesome, ongoing tribute to this beautiful art form, that jazz is, it could create!!

Feel The Manouche is the latest band under the leadership of Sydney based jazz violinist and singer George Washingmachine. Remarkably versatile, George is an accomplished actor on stage and screen, as well as a comedian and visual artist. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

The biggest little big band on the block, The Jive Dogs has been evolving around Launceston since late last millennium.

YOU’RE MY THRILL - WENDY MATTHEWS SINGS BILLIE HOLIDAY 8pm (doors open at 7.30pm) Red Hot Music $45 (bar facilities available) In the winter of 2012, singer songwriter Wendy Matthews went into the Stuart Piano Factory in Newcastle with Brendan St Ledger playing piano and Greg Royal on stand-up bass. The trio emerged after two days with an EP of live recordings and realised they had captured a long loved, but never delved into, side of Wendy’s musical history.

The circumstances they recorded in allow for an intimate and introspective translation of some classic and not so classic Billie Holiday songs, an iconic woman whose soul and music has long been admired. This is an evening of some classic songs and virtuoso musicians, speckled with some of Wendy’s iconic songs reworked.

Home Hill Beyond Concerts - art HOME HILL ANNIVERSARY LIGHT PROJECT Saturday 25 July 7-9pm Devonport Entertainment & Convention Centre (outside) For one night only, the National Trust and Don College are bringing Devonport’s only house museum, Home Hill, into the centre of town!

Built in 1916, Home Hill was the family home of Joseph Lyons, his wife Dame Enid Lyons and their 12 children. Joseph is the only Tasmanian to be Prime Minister of Australia and Dame Enid was the first woman elected to Australia’s House of Representatives.

Images of this unique and significant Devonport icon will be shared with Jazz patrons and passers-by alike through a creative outdoor projection, designed by art students from Don College.

Barringwood Vineyard and Cellar Door Cafe is located just a 15 minute drive from Devonport on the main tourist route (B14) to Sheffield and Cradle Mountain.

Built in the 1920’s as a permanent residence for the Harbour Master, the original building was a double brick ‘villa’ built on ‘a slight rise in a park about 200 metres from the shoreline and at the entrance to the Mersey River’.

Devonport Regional Gallery VENUES DEVONPORT REGIONAL GALLERY

DEVONPORT TENNIS CLUB

The Baptist Church, now the Devonport Regional Gallery, was built in 1904. In 1969 when the church moved to other premises, the building incorporated the Devonport Library until 1983, when it became the designated site for the Devonport Gallery and Arts Centre. In 2004 the Gallery underwent refurbishment including new gallery walls and floor and in 2012 a purpose built facility was completed to provide the safe housing and display of the Gallery’s Permanent Collection.

The Devonport Tennis Club offers both Standard and Social Club memberships. Their recently refurbished Club Room has excellent bar facilities in a prime, sunny location near Mersey Bluff.

The Club Room is available for hire for a variety of occasions and offers a cosy and friendly feel. Court hire is available to the general public and the Club also offers private coaching and regular tennis rosters.

The Gallery presents an annual program of exhibitions, education and public programs including events and workshops.

The House of Anvers’ state-of-theart Garden Conservatory offers a stylish venue for Devonport Jazz. The specialty of the house is of course chocolates, hot cocoa in many flavours, chocolate desserts and … more chocolate! Tasmanian fare luncheons are served, together with a range of teas and espresso coffees.

Visit the Museum of Chocolate and learn how chocolate came to be in the form we know it today. The House of Anvers has viewing windows so guests can see how they make their couverture chocolates, it has a museum related to chocolate, garden walks, tasting centre and retail, and the cafe is open every day from 7am – 6pm, with hot meals served until 3pm.

The Mersey Yacht Club currently caters for all levels of sailing from juniors, beginning seniors, cruisers and social sailing, to competitive club and inter club racing. Regular racing is scheduled on Saturdays during the summer sailing season between October and April each year. A Winter Series is also run on a fortnightly basis from May to July each year.

Red Hot Music has been meeting people’s music needs for over 15 years now. Part music store, part entertainment venue, Red Hot Music regularly hosts touring artists of all genres.

Spreyton Cider Co. is the latest venture from Spreyton Fresh, the home of the finest fresh apple juice since 1998. The Cidery, located on their working orchards, was constructed in 2012 with their first bottling taking place in October 2012.

Independently operated, designed and maintained by musicians for musicians, Red Hot Music aims to get you the music gear you need.

The cider maker has produced a range of ciders that are classic examples of the cider maker’s art.

They use traditional cider making techniques with a modern twist to create their unique range of ciders.

All of the cider undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle and is then bottle conditioned to achieve a light carbonation and a supreme flavour.
